Personally, I don’t mind whether the watch is simple or complicated. The joy of watching your videos is the explanation of your expertise in spotting then dealing with problems when they arise. I am in awe of your effortless grasp of the tiny little problems that you spot and then correct that make me admire the skill of a true craftsman at work. I do believe that mechanical watches are miracles of engineering and you, Sir, perform miracles in your simpatico understanding of them.
I agree...the stories and descriptions are wonderful. I have a fondness for classics especially pocket watches from the old days. A lot of these new watches with 1000s of movements and parts don't really hit me like a classic Rolex or a Geneva
Hi Stian: It doesn't matter to me whether the watch is complicated or simple, because what I enjoy so much is your informative and educational commentary about how the watch works, what the parts do, what problems you find as you work on the watch, and how you resolve those problems (especially when you explain how you carry out a "repair" on a part). So this video was very enjoyable because of your thoughtful explanations of the burnishing process and adjusting the endshake.
Top of the morning to you, Stian! I am typing this comment; a response to your question on whether your viewers prefer to watch repair and restorations of simple watches or those with complicated complications. It is a wonderful treat to watch a master at work. I have enjoyed every moment of your videos and I consider watching your videos to be my daily meditative experience. I have also learned from you as I have watched, and emboldened myself to try my hand at servicing and restoring my collection of clocks, watches and pocket watches. There are a few better moments in the viewing experience that can rival the moment when the balance does its dance ; the Twist, and a broken watch beats again!. Thank you for sharing these videos and letting us all take a break from all the chaos, craziness going on in the world now, and soak in all the calmness and serenity emanating from here.
Good day Stian, in this world, not very much is "free" however, I believe the ppl that have joined as members and patreon members should get "special" videos. And those that like to watch you working on complicated watches have paid for the privilege. That's where the watches with complications should be. Other watches like this one are a joy to watch you working on. It's my opinion and my suggestion.Always great watching you work.Best wishes❤😂🎉
Thanks for the input, Michael! The member videos I make aren't generally of other watches, they are more of specific topics, how-to tutorials etc. Then I also make members editions of the public videos where I add some footage and go through the technical aspects in detail
I enjoy the simple ones also, maybe with day/date complication. For now it's about accessibility---the more complications, the higher the price maybe. Of course, even simple high end watches have high price tags, but since I'm scrounging low end watches right now the more simple ones you restore/service, the more content I have to learn from. But I pretty much watch all your videos anyway.
I enjoyed that Stian, I do like chronograph service.they are so interesting, but I also like the simple ones too as you don't know what you're going to find. 👍
i love all types of watch perhaps the older the better but to watch someone as gifted as you Stian is what makes the channel great cant wait for the next one tnx
Good afternoon Stian, I have enjoyed watching and listening to your videos. It doe not matter whether they are simple or complicated, your explanation of how it all works is perfect. I particularly enjoy your sense of humour.
Simple or complicated he's fine. I feel it's necessary change it up now and then. And hearing about your life while teaching this works for me. It adds a little endearment.
I'm in the middle of restoring an L&R parts cleaning machine and making my own watchmaker's bench. I've been slowly buying tools and watches and feel close to being ready to start this hobby. You were a huge inspiration, so Thank You/Tak!
What a great looking vintage piece and yet again, another perfect servicing. As mentioned below, it doesn't matter too much to me what the complications may be, I just enjoy your work and commentaries while your working, whether it be related to the watch ..or other 'family' matters. Enjoyable all around. Thank you sir....!!
With respect to your question at approximately 16min, I personally do not care about the level of complexity. I just like watches. What I would ask for is clear, succinct commentary on what you are doing at each step and what considerations are going through your mind as you work. Thank you.
To answer Your question, Stian: I'm happy to see elegant technical solutions to whatever problem. So I'm absolutely fine with a "simple" mechanism like this one. What intrigued me most, actually, was that they took the effort to put an anglage on the bridges and even give the movement faux chatons. Who would do this nowadays? However, I have enjoyed watching You work on more intricate complications as well and I understood them better afterwards. So just keep doing Your thing and share the projects that show something special, be it cheap or expensive, simple or complicated.
The variety of the movements in your channel i perfect. Your comments and jokes are the best of any watch making cannel on UA-cam so don’t cut back on them. Thank you for all the informational and historical information that you share with us.
And there's me thinking you started the channel to educate us, the ignorant masses. I think the key to your success Stian, is the breadth of watches, rather than whether the movement has complications. Oh, and a little patient humour.
I like classy, vintage dress watches myself, but I enjoy watching vids of both simple and more advanced watches. So far I probably learn more from the vids regarding simple calibers though.
Congratulations on reaching 50 000 subscribers. Much deserved. I like all the variety of your videos. More simple watches, more complications, more unusual watches and especially the older watches. Your content to date has been great. Better jokes and worse jokes included.
A very nice dial indeed. I like both simple and complicated movements. Simple ones, you give more detailed explanations. Complicated offer differences.
Loved watching you do this repair what you do is amazing and one day you're kids will appreciate it. How you know putting it back together I don't know. And the equipment you have I've never seen. I have around 80 time pieces from tens of pounds to couple of hundred and some really good watches proving you don't have to spend thousands. Your vid I find mesmerising😊
I don't wear watches. I'm one of those people who can't have nice things LOL. I really enjoy watching you work on the watches, they are amazing little works of wonder, no matter if they are simple or complicated. Plus you and your presentation and sense of humor are very enjoyable. I'll what whatever kind of watches you work on.
I want your big reveal to be a watch you've designed. This was one of your best videos from the perspective of you not getting everything perfect on the first attempt, and including explanations for the 'whys' of what you were doing (e.g., coarse grind followed by fine).
Замечательная работа!! Просто потрясающая!!! Наслаждение смотреть и слушать Вас! Пожалуйста, снимайте и простые механизмы тоже. С уважением и приветом из Белоруссии!
I am totally fascinated by what ever you do Stian. Although I must admit breathing life into non runners are my favourites. I have now caught up with all your previous videos much to my family’s bewilderment. But they all watch T.V. Soaps. How weird is that? I can now look forward to all your new postings. Stay well. All the best Mick.🇬🇧
Always a treat to watch while enjoying a cup of HOT tea. Simple or complex, your explanations and musings are very enjoyable. Thank you for your output. I know you WILL get to 100k!
I like complicated watches, but, I like a very simple watch too. Please do both Stian! - Beautiful watches like you do, also once which are rare and good in technology probably is the best match. Thanks for a great explanation about the mechanical movemements please.
Hi Stian, congrats on your you tube achievment. The complexaty doesnt matter to me as long as you are the one fixing it. Enjoy your work-cant wait for the next episode!😂
I'm a fan of the more complicated watches, though I enjoy the simpler ones, too. I'd love to see you work on an IWC Perpetual Calendar, a Lange Timezone, and a Patek Annual Calendar.
Personally I don't have a preference on how complicated a movement is, I enjoy them either way. I'm here for the funny little side stories, brand/watch history and the corny dad jokes told in a smooth white Barry White tone of voice. 😂👍👍 Congrats on the 50k subs!!
As any husband I feel confident my wife has less than no interest in my work 😎 But yeah, if you will know she saw the video if my channel suddenly goes black.
A seasoned watchmaker who strives to improve his already unbelievable skills with further training speaks volumes for your dedication to your craft. The work you performed on the minute balance staff alone was mind blowing. Great content, expertly filmed and narrated on a beautiful chronograph watch.
I've never seen this type of chronograph. I enjoy seeing novel complications best, but any unusual repairs -- like the one here -- are also interesting. Thanks for the content!
I'd like to see both complicated and simple calibers. You work with them with equal passion. Looking forward for each upcoming video. Thanks for your amazing work and humor! And I do also hope your wife did not see this video :)
I absolutely love the face on that watch and the watch strap you chose enhanced it even more. You often show what a difference the watch strap can make to the whole look.
I'm afraid my comment will be as useless as many below: I like your channel as it is now - with all its variety and style. I'd love it to stay like this.
Hello Stain ! I personally enjoy the more simple style type of mechanical and automatic movements. I guess I am a old school type of guy.for me just a date is perfecto. I don't race cars or do sail boat racing and don't need to know what time it is in Hong Kong. Less is better for me! Thanks for really enjoyable and educational videos.
More important than what we want is what keeps you interested and excited. While I’m always curious about watches with further complications. Variety and your personal joy is more important than me having steak every day.
I love it when you find surprises deep inside, like that stuff in the jewel. What was that? Yuk! It doesn't matter much to me what type of watch you film, it's your abilities and expertise that keeps me watching. Great job as always! Oh, and the awful sound of those ultrasonic machines is welcome noise, it means less work hand cleaning for me!
Great video's, I would like to see more videos of identifying problems and the repair not just replacing parts, this one is was good for showing how to burnish the balance staff and removing end shake, keep up the great work I enjoy all of you videos
I just wanted to take a moment to say how amazing your video was! I was really impressed with the quality of the footage, the editing, and the overall presentation. You did a great job of explaining the topic in a clear and concise way, and I learned a lot from watching your video. I also really appreciated the way you made the video engaging and entertaining. You kept my attention throughout the entire video, and I never felt bored or lost. I would definitely recommend your video to anyone who is interested in learning more about the video. Thanks again for making such a great video! I look forward to watching more of your content in the future. PS: I outsourced this feedback to AI.
I guess it's time to confess that I'm not actually that much of a watch guy. I don't have favorite brands (in that I favor one over others) and I'm not a purist (in that I don't prefer mechanical watches over quartz). I do, however, have a love for beautiful things, watching things work, hearing about how and why they work, but mostly I love to watch and listen to skilled professionals work their trade. I'm in this for the process and narration, whatever watch may be on the bench.
I am unable to express my feeling after seeing you how you handle a watch so delegate and like eating bread. I am just starting my hobby and doing some repair and maintenance on pocket watches but I dream a day that I would handle the watch movements as you do.
As others have said, I enjoy all of the different types of watch servicing that you do, but what persuaded me to put my hand in my pocket and become a member is your narration, whether it's an explanation of what you are doing on the bench, or the history of watchmaking in general. Thank you, and keep up the good work ... 🙂
Thanks for watching, Douglas! Yes, I like working on complications but some videos (like the one being published today) show simpler watches that I think are interesting :)
work on anything you want. I can watch you repair anything. Simple hard. Matters not and congrats on 53k. Going well. Looking forward to big announcemnt!
Hi Stian, great video therapy as i'm waiting for parts. I havent seen this particular movement myself but i'm already a fan, i thought it was modified by the watch co but no, i will reaserch some unusual vintage movements, i do have a few but always room for more cheers mate. I don't mind simple or complex, i enjoy different problems being overcome with specialised or homemade tools.
First, Stian, let me say that I throughly enjoy your UA-cam channel. It is an absolute delight! Second, your name is not strange to me, as I have a very close friend with that same name. Then, I want you to know that my ancestry is primarily Norsk. Finally, I very much like this particular repair. Simplicity is good for me. I wound up being a Lutheran Pastor, but I nearly when to watch makers school in 1970 (that tells you how old I am!). But I did not (though many days I wish I had). Today, I am a bit too old to do much work on watches due to my age and steadiness of hands. However, I live vicariously through your videos! I have a small (unimpressive) collection of watches, but I watch with envy (sin) the work you do and the watches you make come to life! So, keep doing what you are doing, I look forward to each episode I view. And, in the end, I love your wonderful Norwegian brogue, I think you must have wonderful kids, and I think your spouse must be a saint!
Thanks so much, that's very nice to hear :) God works in mysterious ways and so do watches sometimes! Watch repair is a hobby you can pick up even at a mature age. I also have issues with shaking hands, but there are techniques that help you steady them.
What a beautiful watch! Simple clean design, no golden BS on it, elegant and sport everyday usage at the same time. I love its movement simple solution to integrate a stop counter in a standard watch movement using a clever clutch. I also believe the strap you chose fits it perfectly cosmetically. I also always preffered leather or fabric straps than cold noisy heavy hair picker bracelets. Great video as always keep up, cheers from hot Greece! Jim
@@VintageWatchServices Air conditions work overshifts here filling electrical bills with big numbers unfortunately but we are used to our summer hot stuff unlike northern European friends
Thank you for the video Stian. I like the unusual complication. Power reserve indicator, date pointer, triple date watches and day date pointers. Thanks again!
I would prefer to see how the GMT function works as I have a Rolex GMT Master II. To see how this GMT complication works would be a great help. Many thanks for such a detailed report and painstaking maintenance on this chronograph ~Wendi 🌻
Stian, I personally admire all mechanical watches, including pocket watches, but from a viewing perspective I do probably prefer the watch complications, I find them intriguing, also enjoy your explanations of how things work and how you carry out repair work.
Dear Stian, thank you so much for sharing this - as always - brilliant video with the watch-loving community. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was glad to see that you posted it free of charge. With regard to your question about complications, there are two that I have never seen serviced in any lengthy and explanatory video: 1. a perpetual calendar 2. a minute repeater. If you ever get your hand on one of those, that would be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, any video you have produced and published so far, is of exceptional quality, so that it does not matter what kind of watch is on your bench. You could also - for good laughs - service modern-day IWCs, Panerais, Hublots, Tag Heuers etc. to show your audience (50'000+ - congrats!) what crap they offer (at $5'000+ - really 😩👎🤪🤮) ...
Thanks, Yves ! My videos are always free of charge (apart from UA-cam ads...), the members get additional videos 😊 I'll do a minute repeater on the channel at some point, just have to find time for it. And yes, I wouldn't mind savaging a Panerai or Hublot...
@@VintageWatchServices I am so much looking forward to you doing all of these. However, you could probably just peel a potato and it would still be worth watching.
Subscriber and big fan of yours. I’m not picky on what kind of watches I want to see you tear apart and put back together. I trust you to show us some interesting things and you never disappoint. Now…about the grand reveal coming up…you’ve really piqued my curiosity.
Most enjoyable rehab. You have a very relaxing presentation. Old vintage movements are my preference... I used to do American RR pocket watches (pre 1920's). Always amazed at the precision they obtained more than a century ago. What other machines from back then still can be used today? Still fascinated! Thx for your great content.
Personally, I don’t mind whether the watch is simple or complicated. The joy of watching your videos is the explanation of your expertise in spotting then dealing with problems when they arise. It's lovely to actually see somebody using the turns in practice...things that were only read in books previously. Very interesting.
😊👍 it's not actually turns though, it's a Jacot tool, a specialized tool for pivot burnishing and polishing

As others have said, I enjoy all of the different types of watch servicing that you do, but what persuaded me to put my hand in my pocket and become a member is your narration, whether it's an explanation of what you are doing on the bench, or the history of watchmaking in general.
Thank you, and keep up the good work ... 🙂
Thanks for joining!
I watch a lot of watch makers and you usually show more complicated movements, which I like. Either way, I’m here as a viewer
Thanks, Dave! 👍
doesnt matter if the watch is complicated or plain simple, its always a treat watching you do what you do
Hi Stian, great video therapy as i'm waiting for parts.
Either or are equally enjoyable, look forward to your posts.
Красивые часы, вы молодец, что отремонтировали.
As long as we have your scintillating commentary, give us both the simple and complicated movements....variety is the spice of life, eh?
That's a cool way to do a chronograph, it's simple and effective
Very happy with the simpler pieces, esp. when they have interesting problems like this one.
I enjoy them all. Its all in your delivery.
Jim
Thanks, Jim! Be careful with the heat in Greece 😨
@@VintageWatchServices Air conditions work overshifts here filling electrical bills with big numbers unfortunately but we are used to our summer hot stuff unlike northern European friends
Congrats with the 50K, Mr. UA-camr. You deserve it! 🙂
Thanks! 😁
I think it's an exceptionally appealing watch.
Thank you for the video Stian. I like the unusual complication. Power reserve indicator, date pointer, triple date watches and day date pointers. Thanks again!
I enjoy the videos on all the watches
I like all the videos and I like all the different types of watches
Stian, you are a brave man!!! only at the dr office... I wish you well at home.
Do like your work, so try ot stay out of trouble.
😂👍
Thx Stian for listing me at the beginning of this nice vid !
Greetings and best regards 😊
Any time!
Beautiful old watch ! Thank you so much sir!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Simple watches are better for a beginner's simple mind like me.
But I suppose it's better that you put something for everyone.
I like all kinds, but the most important thing is variation, I think. That keeps everything more interesting :)
I would prefer to see how the GMT function works as I have a Rolex GMT Master II. To see how this GMT complication works would be a great help. Many thanks for such a detailed report and painstaking maintenance on this chronograph ~Wendi 🌻
Thats the nicest watch Ive ever seen. Very swiss
What a very nice looking simple watch. Cheers
My first time viewing this channel.
As a hobbyist watchmaker, i very much enjoyed watching your professional techniques.
Subscribed! 👍🏻🇬🇧😀
Welcome aboard!
My videos are always free of charge (apart from UA-cam ads...), the members get additional videos 😊
I'll do a minute repeater on the channel at some point, just have to find time for it.
And yes, I wouldn't mind savaging a Panerai or Hublot...
@@VintageWatchServices I am so much looking forward to you doing all of these. However, you could probably just peel a potato and it would still be worth watching.
@@ygrbooks 😂👍
Subscriber and big fan of yours. I’m not picky on what kind of watches I want to see you tear apart and put back together. I trust you to show us some interesting things and you never disappoint.
Now…about the grand reveal coming up…you’ve really piqued my curiosity.
Stay tuned, Anthony! 😉
Thank you very much!
