Great list. Agree with most every pick. My favorite tune by Gene clark is some misunderstanding. From of course my favorite gene clark album. First heard no other when I was like 11-12 when my dad brought it home and we sat on the floor next to the stereo and he was absolutely raving about it. I guess being so young I did not really understand why he thought it was fantastic. A few years later I did. Great show!!!
I'm late to discovering the music of Gene Clark and I owe it all to Joe's passion for it. I am grateful beyond words. I am now completely obsessed and in complete awe. Life changing experience. I can't stop listening to No Other and Roadmaster and I am thrilled to dig into every single song and album. Epic, heartbreaking, inspiring, cosmic American music. Glorious. In interviews, Chris Hillman and David Crosby always tried to portray Clark as some kind of uneducated bumpkin, but he must have read at least a little poetry along the way. The kind of lyrics he wrote don't just come out of nowhere.
Gene's cover of If You Could Read My Mind is quite good. The original by Gordon Lightfoot is one of my favorite songs from the early 70's & one of the first 45's I purchased as a kid so the song resonates with me & Gene did it justice.
Yeah. the original is a classic. My #9 song of 1970. Gordon Lightfoot from 1970-1976 was amazing. Gene's version was true to the original - just a little more up tempo.

Nice, gentlemen. Like I said yesterday, I like So Rebellious a Lover more than you guys, so "Del Gato" and "Gypsy Rider" would make my Top 10. Also, there are definitely some Dillard & Clark tunes that would make mine, but you guys didn't include those two records for consideration. But my God, check out Gene's vocals on "Polly." That's why he's one of my favorite vocalists. Also, it sounds like Joe already knows, but No Other has been released in a Deluxe Edition box set that is especially nice on vinyl. Best Gene song is the live performance of On The Run, over on Bob Seger 's channel. Too many, much loved over many years, and how to put them in order?? Well here's a few to go on with. She don't care about time, b side version Here without you, may be a full Byrds track but Gene wrote it, and it's the one that first took my attention. Set you free this time. With tomorrow. Spanish guitar. The true one. Strength of strings. From a silver phial. Why not your baby, Lisa Miller's version on that Australian tribute album from 2002 or thenabouts. Rain song. For no one. In a misty morning, three quarters gorgeous, final quarter not quite as good.. (takes cover) but as I understand it, Gene didn't have the final say on how those tracks were published anyway, so.. Hear the wind. Past addresses. One in a hundred, White Light version. So joyful! See what I mean about too many to choose from? But I can't sign off without mentioning Lady of the North, which he obviously wrote for me, as I was born in Yorkshire. (😂😂😂) no seriously it is simply glorious.

"Set You Free This Time" from Turn! Turn! Turn! has always been a strong favorite of mine. It's really kind of a shame the way Gene was treated in The Byrds (a band I will always love regardless). With his unparalleled songwriting and his great voice he should have been the lead vocalist, but petty band politics played a rather unfortunate role, that also affected Gene's life.
It would be really cool if you did a Gram Parsons list including his byrds, International Sub band and burrito brothers output. But I know that kind of breaks your rules.

1.Polly. Yes, I am counting a Dillard and Clark tune. Soaring melancholy. First heard it covered by The Walkabouts on their 1993 album Satisfied Mind. 2. With Tomorrow 3. Silver Raven 4. Life's Greatest Fool 5. For A Spanish Guitar 6. Strength Of Strings 7. From a Silver Phial 8. Tried So Hard. Another tune I first heard as a cover, from Yo La Tengo's 1990 album Fakebook. 9. Full Circle Song 10. Some Misunderstanding
I prefer the Walkabouts version of Polly (not so sugar coated as the original) but I give him credit for the writing. The Robert Plant/Alison Krauss version is also worth mentioning - another proof that the song is great. (PS - you list With Tomorrow twice)
Corrected, thanks. I love his vocals on the original, though. That whole Walkabouts record it great; I'll have to dig through my mess of a cd collection and give it a listen.
Couple of good obscurities worth hunting down: If you like 'Echoes' there’s a similar baroque-pop 'Back Street Mirror' actor David Hemmings first released it but they found Gene's vocal track for 'The Lost Studio Sessions'. 'Washington Square' from the 'Under The Silvery Moon' compilation has a kinda dated 80s synth sound but its great lyrics and 'Your Fire Burning' from the Gene & Carla Olson live 'Silhouetted In Light' is Gene's last great song.
Joe or Jason, not sure if either of you has heard these records, but I'm thinking y'all would like them and I highly recommend: - Stephen Still's Manassas (featuring as members with Stills, Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Paul Harris, Dallas Taylor, Joe Lala, and many more "non-member" additional top notch musicians). They put out two albums (a double LP in 1972, and single LP in 1973) - McGuinn, Clark and Hillman - s/t release in 1979 I think) Great records.

10. Needing Someone 9. Shooting Star 8. Life's Greatest Fool 7. Roadmaster 6. Full Circle Song (Roadmaster version, much better than the Byrds reunion version) 5. 1975 4. One in a Hundred (Roadmaster version) 3. The Drifter (Yes, it is mainly Carla Olsen, who also wrote it, with Clark singing backup...) 2. Gypsy Rider 1. No Other
@@TastesLikeMusic Would be very interesting if you did. The singles they have released have been liked a lot by the fans (reading from comments and seeing the streams on Spotify) and the three live concerts they had in January have showed that this album possibly will be among the top three Radiohead albums (imo).
It's too bad you're doing only studio releases because there are so many gems which unfortunately were only demos and not released during his lifetime. Check out Your Fire Burning for one.
I saw Gene along with Micharl Clarke in his controversial "Celebration of The Byrds" tour in Philadelphia in 1985. Also in the band was Skip Battin, Rick Roberts, Rick Danko and several others I don't recall. His voice was a little hoarse, but he performed very well. Poor Mike Clarke had a plaster cast on his leg, but he was able to play drums. I said "controversial" because, I believe McGuinn, Hillman and Crosby sued him to stop.

The road leads straight from Gordon Lightfoot to Neil Diamond and then...Don Henley. Beyond that, my imagination fails but I am sure there is more lurking in the darkness.
Best Gene song is the live performance of On The Run, over on Bob Seger 's channel.
Too many, much loved over many years, and how to put them in order?? Well here's a few to go on with.
She don't care about time, b side version
Here without you, may be a full Byrds track but Gene wrote it, and it's the one that first took my attention.
10 Past Adresses
09 Lady Of The North
08 Echoes

Hi, I've got a Clark/Dillard on my list, does it count as a proper Gene Clark song? anyway, my top 10 is:
1) For a Spanish Guitar
2) Strenght of Strings
3) Full circle song
4) Echoes
5) With Tomorrow
6) Something's wrong
7) From a silver Phial
8) Past addresses
9) Lady of the North
10) I Remember the Railroad
"Set You Free This Time" from Turn! Turn! Turn! has always been a strong favorite of mine. It's really kind of a shame the way Gene was treated in The Byrds (a band I will always love regardless). With his unparalleled songwriting and his great voice he should have been the lead vocalist, but petty band politics played a rather unfortunate role, that also affected Gene's life.
Also, whispers in his ear of being a Solo Star
It would be really cool if you did a Gram Parsons list including his byrds, International Sub band and burrito brothers output. But I know that kind of breaks your rules.
We’ll do something like that one day. - Joe

2. With Tomorrow
3. Silver Raven
4. Life's Greatest Fool

9. Full Circle Song
You have one song twice
Thanks, I was doing this at work and wasn't paying strict attention. Fixed!
Corrected, thanks. I love his vocals on the original, though. That whole Walkabouts record it great; I'll have to dig through my mess of a cd collection and give it a listen.
Through the Morning, Through the Night and The Radio Song
Couple of good obscurities worth hunting down: If you like 'Echoes' there’s a similar baroque-pop 'Back Street Mirror' actor David Hemmings first released it but they found Gene's vocal track for 'The Lost Studio Sessions'. 'Washington Square' from the 'Under The Silvery Moon' compilation has a kinda dated 80s synth sound but its great lyrics and 'Your Fire Burning' from the Gene & Carla Olson live 'Silhouetted In Light' is Gene's last great song.
Joe or Jason, not sure if either of you has heard these records, but I'm thinking y'all would like them and I highly recommend:
- Stephen Still's Manassas (featuring as members with Stills, Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Paul Harris, Dallas Taylor, Joe Lala, and many more "non-member" additional top notch musicians). They put out two albums (a double LP in 1972, and single LP in 1973)
- McGuinn, Clark and Hillman - s/t release in 1979 I think)
Great records.
Haven’t heard the MCH one yet. - Joe
10. Tambourine Man (1984)
9. Tears of Rage (1971)
8. Some Misunderstanding (1974)
7. White Light (1971)
6. One in a Hundred (1971)
5. Tried so Hard (1967)
4. In a Misty Morning (1973)
3. The Virgin (1971)
2. No Other (1974)
1. Life's Greatest Fool (1974)
10. Needing Someone
9. Shooting Star
8. Life's Greatest Fool
7. Roadmaster
6. Full Circle Song (Roadmaster version, much better than the Byrds reunion version)
5. 1975
4. One in a Hundred (Roadmaster version)
3. The Drifter (Yes, it is mainly Carla Olsen, who also wrote it, with Clark singing backup...)
2. Gypsy Rider
1. No Other
Hey Joe - pardon the Are You Experienced pun. Is it true or just a rumor that Sly contributed back up vocals to your #1 Gene song?
I don’t think that’s confirmed. Would be pretty cool though. - Joe
Gypsy Rider from "So Rebelious A Lover" She Darked The Sun from The Fantast Expedition of Dillard & Clark
something about you baby
Mine is 'the rain song'
Will you rank and review The Smile’s debut album A Light For Attracting Attention which comes out the 13th of May?
Possibly.
Check out Your Fire Burning for one.
winter in and thats alright by me are probably my two fave gene tracks
I saw Gene along with Micharl Clarke in his controversial "Celebration of The Byrds" tour in Philadelphia in 1985. Also in the band was Skip Battin, Rick Roberts, Rick Danko and several others I don't recall. His voice was a little hoarse, but he performed very well. Poor Mike Clarke had a plaster cast on his leg, but he was able to play drums. I said "controversial" because, I believe McGuinn, Hillman and Crosby sued him to stop.
(Honourable Mentions: Echoes, With Tomorrow, Life’s Greatest Fool, Rain Song)
10. Tears of Rage
9. Give My Love to Marie
8. Shooting Star
7. Lady of the North
6. She Don’t Care About Time
5. In A Misty Morning
4. Silver Raven [Probably my favourite vocal perfomance from him.]
3. For A Spanish Guitar [This is what I thought Bob Dylan's music would sound like. It kinda does, but Dylan's songs I know are way worse than this one.]
2. Some Misunderstanding [A Country Version of Pink Floyd.]
1. No Other [Mindblowing song. Probably the correct choice for SOTY 1974.]
Songs I share with Jason: (1) In A Misty Morning
Songs I share with Joe: (4) Lady of the North, In A Misty Morning, For A Spanish Guitar, No Other

Very insightful, you two.
@@Vanessa.P I'm working on breaking their code. I think they're saying their hungry but I'm not 100% sure yet
@@GeneBolmarcichEsq 😂 you might be on to something...
I suspect a Kansas City Southern reference, but I could be wrong.. 🤔
So, no No Other, Some Misunderstanding... I think you don't know Gene Clark's work very well.
No Other my number one, guy. - Joe
In all seriousness, I just didn't connect with Gene. I guess I'm mostly with Kram if I'm being honest
This is a big black mark on your resume. - Joe
🙀
I have no opinion on gene I didn't listen to it
@@ryankramzer1256 Sorry. One of the guys said that you don't like country which is why you weren't there. I wasn't sure if that was accurate but they did say it so I assumed you didn't like him
A GREAT GENE CLARK SONG IS "MY NAME IS Del GOTO" ....
