I had the great opportunity to meet Gene Clark, and was very star struck. He was kind, put me at ease, and we had a great conversation. Also, in my opinion, No Other is one of the best "bass" records ever. A truly remarkable achievement by my favorite bassist. Thanks for the great video and thanks for your great artistry on No Other.
73 is the new 43. You're in excellent shape, Lee, and the fact that you keep yourself so engaged in music, touring and nature will ensure decades to come. Happy pre-birthday! It's just a number.
At the time I think people expected a more spare country-rock production from Gene. But this completely predicted what would come along a year or two later with Fleetwood Mac. I’m happy that it is finally receiving recognition for the stone classic it is.
I appreciate your efforts to shine a light on the greatness of Gene Clark. I saw McGuinn, Clark, & Hillman in ‘79 or ‘80. It remains a highlight among all of the live shows I’ve seen. Not because of Byrds songs as I had expected, but because of the few songs Gene performed solo. He blew me away! Prior to the show, he was the one I knew almost nothing about and I left feeling I had just made an extremely important discovery. Hence, it was sad not to have heard much more from him and then to learn he passed way so prematurely. Thank you for sharing this song!
Yeah, I saw them too, around the same time frame. They were very good, but seeing the Dixie Dregs twice in the same club was even better! Actually they were known simply as the Dregs by then; Mark O'Connor was playing violin with them, the last time I saw them before they broke up.
I remember hearing this song as a teenager on an "underground" FM station in Chicago. I did not remember who it was and was unaware at the time of the name or reputation of Gene Clark. But the song really stuck with me and I am glad that I re-discovered it just a few years ago.
Leland, thank you for posting this recollection. No Other is one of my desert island discs. I just got the Box set and it is wonderful to hear how you all worked through the different takes, now to hear you remember making this exquisite music.
This became one of my favorite albums after I watched this vlog. I’d never heard of it before. So damn great. I love that it gave musicians soooo much freedom and creativity. ❤️💙💜💜💙
Sadly too much freedom & expensive studio time according to the Asylum Label Boss (apparently), who didn’t support it on release. Maybe a couple other reasons in there too, but….. Wow… a record “ before it’s time” & really creatively, something totally unexpected and “ out of the box”, like nothing Gene had recorded previously soundwise. So, so glad he got to record it though and with such a great cast of Players including Mr Sklar. I think the musicians & singers walked out of Village Recorders at the end of the sessions knowing they were creating something unprecedented and unique with Gene Clark’s words and melodies. ❤
Jason Morrow I am a nurse here in Copenhagen, Denmark and i can also tell everyone ITS NOT A JOKE!! Thx for your postings Leland, cheers from Denmark ❤️
THANKS FOR THIS! As the biggest Gene Clark freak around, I sure appreciate it. I recall the thrill - like it was this morning - of hearing KSAN play NO OTHER from start to finish.
dashed off to town as soon as i read that this album was in the shops, still my favourite and a pleasure to see and hear this wonderful musician who actually played on it and has such tales to tell.
Lee's generosity in celebrating other artists is so admirable. And the fact that near the end of this video he somehow remembered a Bowie session he did for Cat People made me laugh out loud. And he wasn't invoking fake humility. He truly hadn't recalled the session until it somehow entered his mind. That demonstrates three things: how prolific he is...how genuine a person he is...and how truly great a player he is. #lovinglee
Mr. Sklar...you keep your site straight and good on you....my gal is a nurse who has broke her rear working 7 days straight holding off this contagion...thank you man...god bless you brother...I listen to your stories like sitting around a camp fire...throughly enjoy every one !
In 1975 a government funded youth radio station took to the airwaves in Sydney Australia. Through Double J and adventurous DJs like George Wayne and Mac Cocker, we teenagers suddenly had access to a whole world of music previously unavailable. One of these guys introduced me to No Other and it was genius. The voice of an angel with an incredible lineup of session musicians. Thank you Leland for your amazing contribution to it. After all these years it remains for me one of the greatest albums of all time. I was privileged to see you perform live with Phil last year - keep the videos coming!
Gene being part of the blocks that create the country rock road is very important to me. Gene left the Byrds and needed more coverage but gets its now.
You’re a terrific storyteller. It’s wonderful to hear the back story on what might be my favorite album. It blew me away in 1974 when I bought the record and I’ve bought various reissues including last year’s spectacular box set from 4AD. My friend Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of 4AD covered Strength of Strings and With Tomorrow on two This Mortal Coil albums and has long been a champion of Gene’s music. I sent him this UA-cam tonight, I know he’ll love.
FANTASTIC STORY Joe Lala was a friend in his final years so it's so very cool to hear you sing his praises. Your basses on No Other are otherworldly...thank you
Hey Leland, I so appreciate you giving so much of yourself and time-not to mention talent. Really enjoy your stories and music knowledge. Stay well. Tim
This has been one of my favorite recordings since it came out in the 70's. Leland, your playing is just brilliant; I especially love the part under the guitar solos when the cowbell doubles the beat. Awesome!
Hi again Leland, just listened to Gene’s album, it’s been remastered on UA-cam, WOW 😮 it’s a masterpiece! RIP Gene and any other contributors who have passed! Thanks Leland! 🔥🙏👏
Hi Leland....sittin in my yard...havin a beer...thought to myself...."wonder how Lelands doin?...",,,,and here you are...like clock work... i also wondered to myself....how in the world did i find myself on this channel....not a clue...but boy am i happy t be here...thanks dude...
i am SO happy to have stumbled across this channel I didn't even know who Leland is but it turns out he's played on so many of my favourite songs ever! THANK YOU LELAND
This album had an impact on me from the very first time I listened to it, when it was released. It was a spiritual experience for me. At one time I had committed the lyrics to memory. I would sing the songs acapella for friends occasionally. No Other is one of my all time favorite albums.
"That's me - I'm the gum on your shoe." Another great Sklar quote there! Thanks for an awesome episode on one of my absolute favourite songs. And thanks for talking sensibly towards the end to the knuckleheads.
With that mileage comes wisdom born of experience. You wouldn't be the wonderful soul you are without it and we love it! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Le - I've been enjoying your channel so much, but only came across this video today. What a thrill that you were a part of one of my favorite albums. I agree with you that it is great Gene is finally getting the respect he deserves, albeit too late. I saw a group of younger musicians from some well known indie bands (Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Wye Oak, and others) perform the No Other album in full a few years ago and it was incredible to see the crowd--young and old--coming together to appreciate a lost classic. Thank you so much for your work on this masterpiece and for sharing some tales about making it!
I’m 43 and have made 67 albums of my songs playing all the instruments on most of them. I’m a huge Gene Clark fan and this is one of the first albums ever heard of his and it changed my life. When I heard these albums didn’t go anywhere it had the opposite effect for me and inspired me beyond belief to share my music and truth “success or not here I come”. It doesn’t matter. Truth is all that matters and Gene Clark has that in his music in spades. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome story.
I’m also fascinated by the passage of time and observe it most clearly in the neighborhood kids. They were little kids playing with my kids now they’re driving and the little boys have beards. I’ve always enjoyed your music and now I’m enjoying your videos, thanks
Holy crap! was just looking up interviews with Gene Clark because No Other has been a favorite of mine since I learned about it several years ago (I'm 23 for reference). Then I found this and did some reading . . . Spectrum is also one of my favorite albums of the 70s! I'll have to look into other stuff you've played on
Gene Clark’s album simply titled Gene Clark (including White Light) is a classic . . every song is a winner. thanks for this tribute! Leland, your channel is one of the best things on the You. I’m 68 and love reliving my youth through your stories. Stay Well!
Yes! White Light, almost the antithesis of No Other in it’s simplicity but I love it equally as much. It’s like sitting cosy inside around a log fire listening to a beloved and talented friend sing his soul to you. ❤
This record was a great find for me more than 20 years ago. And even then I knew I was late to hearing it. Gene Clark really had a prolific career after the Byrds and made a string of terrific records. And I really like that Leland played bass on this record.
Thank you so much for sharing these memories. As a huge Gene Clark fan, I'm eager to hear any more anecdotes you would like to share. Please stay safe.
Hey Leland Do you remember "Don't You Write Her Off Like That" by McGuinn, Clark & Hillman? Minor impact on top 40 but did well on adult cotemporary..it's one of those songs that got lost in the scramble of time.
Who are the 8 twats giving thumbs down on this video? Leave! No one here wants negative energy on Lee's channel. You're not worthy of listening to Mr Sklar's words of wisdom and wit. Show some damn respect to Lee: to have one of the greatest musicians in history literally chatting one on one with us, from the heart, is a treasure. If you don't "get that", you don't belong here.
I appreciated your tribute and stories of Gene Clark. I have been a fan of his from the Byrds til the end of his career. I was a Dillards fan and bought the 2 Dillard and Clark albums when they came out. On You Tube there's a good video of Gene Clark and Carla Olson doing "Gypsy Rider" on the old Nashville Now TV show. The great Hal Rugg is playing steel on the song. I'm hooked on your You Tube site so thanks for that. By the way, my brother played piano in the Wayzata High School stage band in Minnesota with the fellow who followed you in James Taylor's band - Jim Johnson.
Good morning Leland! 👊 Great music is timeless, I’ll be honest, never heard of Gene till today, but that track sounds like it could have been cut yesterday! Thanks 🙏 Enjoy the rest of your day! 🔥👏
Leland, I've enjoyed you since the early 70's. You are undoubtedly my favorite bassist...with a nod to Jack Bruce, who is right there, too. Thank you for your perspective on the current state of our lives. My wife is an RN and my son manages an out patient diagnostic imaging facility and he's face to face with COVID-19 patients every day. It's all too real. Love your channel and insights into the music of my life. It's been a great journey. Glad we're still on it.
Much love, Lee! You are a fantastic human being, an astounding bassist, and a legend. I love your videos as much as I love your playing, keep up the great work! I hope you and your family stay safe and stay healthy!
Amen, thank you Lee! In reverse order: thank you for the service you are providing entertaining us, and for helping sustain our energies as we go through this thing together. And freaking THANK YOU for dis-inviting the seriously idiotic to "hang" here. Now... you've blown me away with this amazing deep dive into No Other, and the fantastic Gene Clark. You picked the perfect cut to showcase your absurdly awesome bass arrangement, and a shining example of Gene's genius. Happy to think that some of your 84,200 (!) followers will explore Gene's work further. ...Wow, words fail. Just- thank you for doing this. Great on so many levels. By the way, listening along with you is every bit as enjoyable as having you actually play, and oddly enough, just as valuable as a bass lesson. Much love from San Francisco.
Artists are amazing people, regardless of the medium they perform in; written words, pigments, musical notes. I listen to a song and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, someone plays a second or two riff on an ocarina, and I wonder why. Who thought that was what the song needed? Thanks for your artistic contributions to my amazement and for generously giving us a peek into the artistic process. Stay home...stay safe...save lives!
Thank you for this. I managed a record store in San Francisco when this album came out and we played it in store a lot. It didn’t sell much but when we played it folks would grab it. I just heard from a friend that one Gene’s son’s Kelly just passed away in SF two weeks ago. So sad. ✌🏻
Thank you Leland! This is great! As a longtime Byrds and Gene fan, this album was one of those gems that flew under a lot od people's radar. I love your videos!
Great album....bought it when it first came out as I was a Dillard & Clark fan.....takes me back in time. Glad to hear it is being more widely appreciated. Thanks for sharing! Cheers, bob
It's so enjoyable just to sit back and listen to you tell stories after so many years of knowing you're playing on most of the albums I used to buy. It's an amazing point in time or somebody like me is able to make a connection like this ... pretty cool ! By the way I have that Gene Clark album, I bought it as a cutout. I have one album by the Section also both in real good condition...
So happy that you choose this song and album to discuss - it is deservedly considered a masterpiece. Thank you so much for your insights. Also well said about the nutters/deniers!
Back in the good old days when the Detroit area had some great progressive radio stations WABX, etc., they used to play that song occasionally. I haven't heard it since then, it brought back good memories, thanks so much Leland, you sir, are the 'gum on my shoe' that I appreciate.
A life well lived and you are still living it sharing your stories with us all. I love the net as it gives us a chance to hear people like yourself which is incredibly enjoyable as you have played and interacted with people that for me are just names on album covers. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the stories are icing on the cake. Cheers man.
Am just a bit younger than you, grew up listening to all this great music. Did not know about this album and Thank You so much for making me aware of it. Did some digging and found several tracks. What a shame the record companies didn't push this harder. Again, Thank You!
I really enjoy your colorful studio and gigging stories! Great stuff! My grandad was Howard Roberts, and I used to enjoy hearing his studio tales as well. Your bass demo episodes are fantastic as well! I think the thing I appreciate the most about your playing, is that you're a minimalist. You never play anything that doesn't belong, or pokes out in the mix. As Howard used to say..."Your like calling a great plumber" musically nailing the part, serving the song 100%, with no ego attached! Btw, I think there is a special place down below for those who awaken us with chainsaws and leaf blowers too early in the morning! Love Ya man! Thank You for all you've bestowed upon us!
Lee, 4AD did a massive reissue of No Other last November with multiple outtakes which also sound really great! Have you heard it? The album received a lot of great press and praise. Thank you so much for sharing your memories of your contribution to this historic album by the great Gene Clark! 🤠👍🏼💕✌
Thank you for sharing your stories about this session. I only recently became aware of Gene Clark's No Other album thanks to Steven Wilson putting it on one of his album lists and i'm absolutely blown away by it. It really is a great story and there seems to be no shortage of these sort of lost albums popping up year after year.
Thank you Lee! Can't believe I missed this 6 months ago! "No Other" is truly the epitome of Cosmic Americana music! Of course you and The Section played with Gene Clark! This will be on of the tunes played when I'm 'seen out'. Blessings, Leland Sklar!
Recently found my old Byrds ticket stub from 1966, has photo of them including Gene. I loved the band, Gene was my favorite for his singing and songwriting, and obvs he was a fine-looking guy. I was 15 and tragically disappointed when Gene wasn't with them at the concert, but was still awesome, especially for my podunk small southern town. Me and gf kept pestering guy guarding backstage to get autographs for us, I need to find my signed playbill. Love "No Other" and everything Gene Clark. Thx, Lee.
Back in the eighties I came upon this cassette something about it caught my eye maybe I'd heard the name Gene Clark some place any rate we wore the tape out over a period of time, still have it. Think I'll UA-cam it, that song something about a vial, really good. Thanks for the memory Lee.
I am also from Ottawa and thankful of our first responders and frontline workers! Totally agree with you as I discovered Leland about 30 days ago! Such a genuinely grateful individual!!!
Amazing to hear your story about this! Made my evening. I'm such a fan i actually have the album art tattoo'd on me. Going to have to go get wavy and have a listen to it right now. Those gnarly heckin basslines are incredible in high fidelity. Thank you Mr.Sklar.
The intro musical bit sounds like a chase scene score from a Charles Bronson movie or something. Tremendous song. I probably would not have found this tune hadn’t you unearthed it Lee. Thanks a million for this gem. You have the memory of an elephant really- remembering all the cats who performed on it like it were yesterday.
Thank for playing this song - Allmusic says this album is an "Unheralded Gem of the '70's...5 stars" - Both Russ & Butch drumming?? Sign me up. - Just got it.. listening to the whole album now. Most appreciated Lee. Right up my alley!
Love ya, man, big time! Thanks for the focus on Gene Clark. Can't say this is my favorite Gene, necessarily--I think I'm more biased toward the Dillard & Clark stuff, in particular--but this was neat, as was the background. Thanks again for it and for all you're doing in general on the site.
I love Gene Clark it will always mystify me why he didn't receive the recognition he desereved.
No Other is always in my top five albums, which frequently change. Your contributions are a big reason for this. Thanks for posting this!
Loved Gene's epitaph on his headstone, "No other"!

Seen them in Manchester United Kingdom. A brilliant show.
Saw them in 79 in Boston , so good !
I bought that Gene Clark album in 1975 and played it constantly. Thank you Leland for all you do and have done for music.
I bought the album when it came out. I still play it alot. Never gets old
I remember hearing this song as a teenager on an "underground" FM station in Chicago. I did not remember who it was and was unaware at the time of the name or reputation of Gene Clark. But the song really stuck with me and I am glad that I re-discovered it just a few years ago.
No Other is a work of genius, nice to hear you crediting everyone involved with this brilliant album. Your bass playing is great on it.
Lee, Yours videos are totally addictive, you are such a great player and gentle soul and your stories are great. Rock on!
One of of my favourite artists, one of my favourite albums. Thanks.
Leland, thank you for posting this recollection. No Other is one of my desert island discs. I just got the Box set and it is wonderful to hear how you all worked through the different takes, now to hear you remember making this exquisite music.
Thanks as always Lee for the wonderful stories. Gene was certainly a unique and very talented artist.
GOD BLESS LELAND AND THANKS FOR THE MUSIC AND THE FANTASTIC STORIES ABOUT THE ARTISTS.
“Strength of Strings” was unique and really strong for the time... still holds up well
That Joe Cocker story had me rolling!! I love a lot of Gene Clark's music. Great song.

dashed off to town as soon as i read that this album was in the shops, still my favourite and a pleasure to see and hear this wonderful musician who actually played on it and has such tales to tell.
A month never passes without my spinning "No Other"
I 've never been satisfied with the final mixing. But now, with the release of the sessions, it all comes together. It's a masterpeace.

...Wow, words fail.
Lee, you’re the gum that binds us together! Thanks for sharing your story, experiences, and thoughts
Thank you Leeland Sklar, allways a pleasure seeing and hearing you.
One of my favorite records of all time. It was sheer joy to see this, thank you sir.
God, I love what you are doing for us all. Keep on, keepin' on! Peace. ✌
Thank you for this. I managed a record store in San Francisco when this album came out and we played it in store a lot. It didn’t sell much but when we played it folks would grab it. I just heard from a friend that one Gene’s son’s Kelly just passed away in SF two weeks ago. So sad. ✌🏻
Awesome Lee great stories and music from 🇳🇿NZ😎👍👍
That is such a beautiful sounding track....thank you for highlighting Gene to us.
Thank you Leland! This is great! As a longtime Byrds and Gene fan, this album was one of those gems that flew under a lot od people's radar.
I love your videos!
So glad you're shining the light on Gene Clark. Great writer & singer.
Leland thanks for remembering the good times and great people.
really enjoying you from new zealand. esp one of the great underestermated gene clark. thank you
So happy that you choose this song and album to discuss - it is deservedly considered a masterpiece.
Cheers man.
Thank you for all the great music, we really appreciate all you do, and keep on doing it.
I watched the Gene Clark documentary, it was an eye-opening experience. Thank you for sharing these stories with us :)
Very interesting story today and the music is always a plus. Thank you Lee 🎵😊
Am just a bit younger than you, grew up listening to all this great music. Did not know about this album and Thank You so much for making me aware of it. Did some digging and found several tracks. What a shame the record companies didn't push this harder. Again, Thank You!
Turns out it's just as cool listening to the tune with your bits of input during the play as when you're covering the bass part. Nice.
Howard was amazing.
Skunk Baxter says everything you need to know to be a guitar player is on Howard Robert’s first two albums.
Howard Roberts -- one of the truly great not only jazz players, but great guitar players.
Thx, Lee.
This is a real rocker for a Gene Clark song..great bass sound..Thanks Leland for sharing this.
Back in the eighties I came upon this cassette something about it caught my eye maybe I'd heard the name Gene Clark some place any rate we wore the tape out over a period of time, still have it. Think I'll UA-cam it, that song something about a vial, really good. Thanks for the memory Lee.
A wonderful recording. Never fail to enjoy Lee's reminiscences and demos, look forward to them every day!
Keep thanking our first responders... and I am from Ottawa Canada and we are in the same COVID situation. You have a huge and kind heart !!
I am also from Ottawa and thankful of our first responders and frontline workers! Totally agree with you as I discovered Leland about 30 days ago! Such a genuinely grateful individual!!!
@@probe11111 Interesting, I also discovered Lee less than a month ago. And my son is an Ottawa fireman. Very proud of him
@@jportugaise I do understand you! Stay safe! I think I will join Leland's Club. Really enjoying the experience!
Ottawa representing in 2024 over here 🇨🇦
Thanks Lee. I have learned something new. I'm glad you got to do something very special.. We listened to Gene Clark all day today and it was amazing!
I love hearing these stories!
What an incredible song!
Zappa gave us "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" and now Leland gives us Parrots Pooped On My Back! Hysterical!!
Amazing to hear your story about this! Made my evening. I'm such a fan i actually have the album art tattoo'd on me. Going to have to go get wavy and have a listen to it right now. Those gnarly heckin basslines are incredible in high fidelity. Thank you Mr.Sklar.
Thanks once again, thanks...look forward to the next one. By the way, great yard and garden space.✌
Nice close, Leland. Thank you for doing this.
My fav. Gene song is Spanish Guitar from his previous record, but No Other is greatest album for sure...
Great song!
