Thank you for reminding me I wanted to look up how to mulch around my crepe myrtles, etc and showing how to correct the mulch a fellow put down for me. I just 'knew' it wasn't right. Plus I've been rescuing my hostas, etc so he knew to put it down but not exactly how close to things.
Here in the desert a foot of fresh wood chip mulch or more is best. Bare soil is bad for the micro-organisms Water conservation, low humidity requires mulch be closer to the trunk.
My newly planted trees has grass and weeds growing at the base. I'm going to add mulch as you show. But before I add mulch do I need to clear the area of weeds and grass?
Fabric that allows the correct amount of water penetration will still allow some weeds to come through. Fabric that prevents 100% weeds is 100% bad for the tree to get the needed amount of water. Therefore, maybe it’s because I’m a Weed Warrior who is not afraid of weeds, but I personally avoid fabric.
Love to see other landscapers using best practices and science based approach good work man

I would recommend removing the weeds and grass because of the Carbon to Nitrogen Ratio Concept. It can also harbor root girdling if done in excess.
Thanks for the great info!! 👍💖🙂🏋️♂️💪
Very informative,thanks
Excellent info.👍👍
So you don't have to put down that fabric to prevent weeds before laying down the mulch?
