    I am a Thai and I don't really mind when people refer to us as a 3rd world country. I have no delusion comparing Thailand with those super powers in the world, we have our problems BUT in the last 10-20 years I have to say that instead of talking about the rate of development in countries, I would rather use the rate of declines in countries as reference. I used to live in Spain for 5 years and 10 years in Germany in the early 2000 and if someone would tell me back then 20 years ago that wealthy westerner would rather spend their retirement years in Thailand than their own country, I would never believe it. But here I am witnessing it all happening. In 20 years I have witnessed the declines of the western world, the declines of the social structures, the declines of cultural values. While westerner emphasized on advancing technology, embracing the change to the so called new eras of expressing freedom(to the point that backfired them), I feel like they neglected their cultural heritage, their transitional values. Thailand is on a declines too but at a much slower pace, maybe because of the influence of Buddhism as the major believe, I don't know. I might sound like a conservative but the world 20 years ago from how I remembered it, it was a much nicer place to be in, maybe not as convenient but definitely less problems, less tension or maybe I am just getting old. haha 😊

      Many western countries have settled with a belief that they ARE the best and always will be which has made them ignorant to the truth of what is happening around the world. This has led to many western countries being complacent. On the other hand asian countries are continuously trying to prove to these western countries that they can catch up, therefore, always developing and even surpassing them at this point.

    I’m Cambodian, and I love visiting Thailand. I definitely don’t think that Thailand is underdeveloped or third world in my opinion. Economic size apart, Thailand has good infrastructure, well sustained good food, advanced healthcare system (better than most first world countries). Americans call most Asian countries a third world until they visit here. I just visited Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Phoenix. All look like going down the tube. KL, Bangkok, Saigon, or Jakarta are way safer than those cities. They even call Singapore a third world where the human development index is higher than that of the U.S, U.K, and most western countries. Putting down Asia is not going to make their country better.

    The term “3rd world” was originally a political determination during WW2, so in the traditional sense it was never a “3rd world” nation. Unfortunately that has changed over time as it became an ethnocentric identification of primarily “non-western” nations. Thailand is in actuality a newly industrialized nation and in many ways much more advanced than many nations considered “1st world”. Thailand is a country of contrast between ultra modern and very traditional and is incredibly intriguing, in many ways, much more than most western nations.

    Recently, I often see videos of American male UA-camrs moving to Thailand from New York or L.A. in the United States. I live in an Asian country, but I have a lot of American male friends, so I often hear from them. They work in the U.S. or South Korea, but they often go to Thailand on vacation. I think Thailand is a safer country than some of the more certain parts of the United States. Also, for Western men, Thailand is the most open-minded country among many Northeast Asian and Southeast Asian countries. South Korea and Japan are very expensive and culturally conservative. By comparison, Thailand is an open culture, and the cost of living is higher than it used to be, but it is cheaper than in Northeast Asian countries. There are a lot of things to do and see in Thailand, so I feel like it's a good fit for Western men. So, like I said, my American male friends often go to Thailand every time they vacation. Oh, and you seem like such a nice person. Your videos always look friendly and cultured. I feel it in your face.

      Problems with S. Korea/Japan isn't that they are "culturally conservative" - Thailand can be conservative in its cultural and traditional ways as well - but the Korean and Japanese are racially-jealous nations. They don't let you be a part of their culture because they are super protective of their homogeneous racial unity (and that's why they are disappearing due to low birth rates). The Thai culture, on the other hand, is not racially jealous in the way of East Asian. Thais are keen to let foreigners participate in their culture, and they have been like this for many centuries. You can read the La Loubère (the French diplomat dispatched to Ayuthaya)'s account of the kingdom of Siam in the 17 century and the "openness" of the Thai cultural psyche was already there.

They willing to share and give up everything or make decisions on things that me and my American family cant understand. I found that while westerner looks things at the investment way but Thai people looking at just the way. @@thebangkokguideAsk the average local do they think the MRT is cheap and most will say no it's expensive. As for all the fancy malls, your average Thai doesn't shopi in them! They go in them to make use of the aircon. Or go to the food courts. I've walked around many of them all over the country most of the stores are empty. House hold debt in Thailand is one of the highest in the world. Sure central Bangkok is developed but just go over to khlong toey which is central and a hugh slum.

      @glenloader639 This is true. But to be fair I don’t shop much in the malls either… but I do find that there are a lot of nice public or semi-public spaces to enjoy, even if nobody can afford them. You make some great points about how outdated and inaccurate terms like "first world" and "third world" are these days. It's crazy that people are still throwing them around so casually, considering they originated during the Cold War era and don't really reflect the complex realities of countries in the modern world. These labels just don't capture the nuances and rapid development happening in places like Thailand and other parts of Asia. It's about time we moved beyond this overly simplistic and often misleading terminology, don't you think?
    PS. Thailand's HDI is 8.03, which places the country in the Very High category.

    • @thebangkokguide

      Very well put. Personally, I think that media and elites in western countries use these types of terms as a form of propaganda in order to both prop up their own power internally, and justify interventions and conflicts abroad. I think that these terms may have always been used for this purpose, and would happily discard them! Thanks for the input!

    As a Thai person, I think that Thailand is a developed country so far. For the following reasons:
    1.) More than 30 years ago, I went to Europe. We accept that Thailand is an undeveloped country. Because European people say Thailand has a small airport. There is no electric train network. There are a lot of poor people who are starving. Doing agriculture using human labors.
    2.) Currently, Thailand has Modern electric trains covering all areas of Bangkok. There is a big airports, there are 20 airports in nationwide in Thailand. Easy travel with 4-8 lane roads connecting every province. No Thai people go hungry. Thailand produces so many food products that there is surplus to sell abroad. Thai people do agriculture with machines and technology.
    3.) Income of Thai people, on average, has income in baht currency that can be used to buy food for every meal. It is enough to use for living. Can be used to take care of everyone's health. The cost of living Thais is not high. So that Thailand is a developed country . Is it True?
    P.S. To taking Thai people's income in baht and converting it to dollars and then you saying that Thai people are poor and have low incomes is a very very wrong logic. This type of wrong way of thinking logic should be completely removed from this world economics.

    Another point worth making. So I split my time in the outskirts of Chiang Mai and in the mountains about 40k west of the city. The people in the mountains are extremely poor and have basically nothing but everyone is happy and supporting thriving families (much more so than the city). Yes it's 3rd world but the average person in the West will think these people are struggling or in some bad situation which they need saving from. This is totally false. The people in America struggle far more and are less happy. Even in Chiang Mai where they have more money they are struggling more and not having families like the poorer people. Basically we've been lied to about poverty I feel, which is only really a curse if you live in cities and don't own your property, have bills etc..., all the stuff that's killing us in America.

I was born and raised here left when I was 18. Came back for a few years and left again and never came back except to visit.
    There's plenty of poverty here. There's plenty of problems here. Oh I'm sure there are problems in Thailand too but there's problems everywhere when you look for them. Just don't look. Don't worry. Be happy. A lot of people making videos about stuff that they're just trying to get clicks on and hopefully make some money. You have to sift through it all...
    70 million visitors says a lot. You can find whatever lifestyle you want here from dirt. Cheap to quite rich. You can just come for the bar scene and what goes on there, you can come to learn a new language, a new skill you can come to teach. Teach you can come for love and you I can come for life. "Third world" is a Cold War term, referring to countries which were not within the political/ideological sphere of the US (referred to as the "first world") nor within the sphere of the USSR (referred to as the "second world").
    Which, in the US, during the 60's, 70's and 80's pretty much translated to "us", "them", and "of no particular concern nor interest" - meaning that most Americans really had little-to-no idea about any country that was not specifically allied with the US or the USSR. Remember that this era predates the Internet, the World WIde Web, and social media. Information outside of the US was limited to what you heard on broadcast TV & radio news channels, read in newspapers & magazines, and got second-hand from the few people you happened to know who had actually travelled outside of the US (of which even fewer still had travelled outside of first world countries).
    I suspect that it was one of us Americans, or a lot of Americans, who, out of ignorance, incorrectly mapped the term "third world" to "undeveloped".
    So, yes, Thailand is a "third world" country, outside of the spheres of the US or USSR. It is also a "developing/developed" country, from an economic & infrastructure standpoint.
    Just my 2 baht of worthless comment & opinion. Please feel free to ignore. :)

    I want everyone to understand the poverty of Thai people. We don't want to be rich because rich people have to think and make decisions all the time. We just want to earn money to go back and build a house, buy amenities and take care of our family. For most Thai people already have land to farm, if we lose our jobs we just go back to farming, so we don't try to develop it much. We see examples of only one aspect of material development and we don't want it.We want to preserve our traditions and culture as we develop the country. If we have to abandon our old traditions and culture to develop the country, we will accept it as a 3rd world country.Since I used the language translation, my message may have been misinterpreted. I apologize here.

    The last couple of years in Bangkok many of the old public non-aircon buses has been replaced. If you see a 40-50 year old public bus every minute it can feel like being in a 3rd world country.
    That is the biggest change I have discovered the last 10 years.
    But how modern Thailand feels depend much on in which sub-district you are.

      I agree. The development level differs enormously depending on the district. Thanks for your comment!

    We can’t trust the entertainment industry because sometimes they set the scenes in the movies are much different than the realistic. I used to believe that America or western countries are better than Thailand when I was young because of the movies I watched. But now it’s not like what I saw in the movies at all. I’m much proud to be Thai and live in this country. I like traveling to other countries but imagine myself living there I didn’t think that I would be happy the same level as I am here in Thailand.

      This is very accurate. Hollywood tends to portray non-western countries very inaccurately... It's a kindof propaganda. Thanks for the input! Cheers

    It's true that Thailand is beautiful country and have a lot of nice buildings. But the index of developed countries is GDP per Capita.
    That's why Thailand is a paradise for expats, 1st world countries and millionaire. But not for mostly Thai citizens.

    Thirty years ago I was on the west coast of the United States and IMHO it was much better than Thailand in almost every way. But what if you told me to go back to America right now? NOT WAY!!!! Looking from outside Thailand, I would rather spend my money living or on vacation in Thailand than in any city in the US.

    I probably caused this cuz when I met foreigner businessman and they asked me if we still ride elephants on daily commute and I always say yes. I even escalated the story by telling them how we stop at drive thru getting water and snacks for the elephants. 😂

    Movie scene, news and documentaries always create images for people. I am Thai. I dream of riding an elephant like in travel commercials spread around the world or in old movie sets.
    Since I was a child until today, I rode an elephant for the first and only time as a tourist when visiting Koh Samui.😅

    Good vid, overall! I will give just a few critiques...
    I don't think travelling or even relocating to another country automatically gets you "out of a bubble". Many expats here seem to be in their own expat bubble. If someone comes here and just hangs out with other farang and doesn't bother trying to learn any Thai or make any Thai friends (a Thai wife or girlfriend that you treat like a maid you can f--- doesn't count)... well, that's not exactly open-mindedness....
    But you do get the opportunity to see a different way which can help you, if you're willing, to start thinking differently... it's much more a process than a result.
    You mentioned there's "no social safety net" here... hmmm... well, from how we define it in the west, true. However, most Thai have a home in the family, that's there's outright, no mortgage, and many have a little farmland as well. While it's by no means luxury, that really isn't any worse than all the old folks in the US on social security that gain a little credit card debt every month because the SocSec chekc doesn't quite cover rent, groceries, and utilities.

    • @thebangkokguide
      @thebangkokguide  28 днів тому +2

      Good points. I agree with your perspective. I think it ultimately comes down to the individual and there are definitely expat bubbles that get pretty empty as well! Thanks for the input!

    Bangkok is definitely a more modern city than London. Just look at the train. Food prices in Thailand are more than 10 times cheaper than (in America or Europe) and so are accommodations.. You can live like a king.. (with an amount of 1500 - 2000 dollars per month in Thailand ) Thailand is the most suitable place to retire.. With the number of convenience stores such as 7-11 open 24 hours, there are more than 10,000 branches

      I find that the quality of life in Bangkok is excellent. That being said, I earn a western salary and it's definitely a lot more challenging on a local salary. I think the geographic arbitrage is one of the main advantages. Thanks for your input!

  • @onalonan
    @onalonan 27 днів тому +4

    Yes, we Thailand is a 3rd world country BUT people living a better life because everything are cheap also the city is more developed than in the states or any countries in Europe.
    It's all about most people in the west and especially in the states they never even go out of the country and see the real world so when they study about another countries they just look at the GDP of the country and judge the country only by the GDP!!!
    Yes, they may be right at most countries in the world but not Thailand and Bangkok where we have a very low GDP and it's because everything are cheap and we also grown most of the foods by ourselves so that's made the GDP of the country very low while some of our poor populations may live a better life than some people in the west or on the states.
    And That's why a lot of people in the states thought that Bangkok is a 3rd world country while it's much more developed than where they lived but they never know because they never see the real world and they believed that their countries are more developed because they are the 1st world.
    I have to say we Thai are so proud to be the 3rd world while we could live here in the paradise and of course never want to be the 1st world where there are only the word "1st world" but everything expensive and people live a hard life and also the city not that modern.

    • @thebangkokguide
      @thebangkokguide  25 днів тому

      I think that western media often portrays non-western countries negatively because it distracts the populations of their own countries. Western countries have many problems, which seem to be getting worse.. but western media and elites just point at problems in other countries rather than fix their own.

    • @onalonan
      @onalonan 25 днів тому +1

      @@thebangkokguide yes, I totally agree my friend. Probably it's all about money!!! And I means not only western people my friend but also the Thai people too!!! When the Thai made their movies such as "Ong-Bak" the famous Thai movie that made by Tony Ja and all the Thai people but they still made Thailand and Bangkok in the movie looks like the worst place in the world and looks really like a shithole country even the Bangkok people still confused about those scenes but most Bangkok people still love the movie too and that's because they known that noone here in Bangkok and also people in the west want to see the skyscrapers of Bangkok in the movie but they rather want to see the shithole place on earth where they could feel sorry for them in the movie and could made them felt a little better about their own life because there are still someone had more struggled life than them and finally after movir they could go home and have a sweet dream and ready to work for tomorrow.
      Also all the Thai travalling Ads too my friend both fot foreigners and also for Bangkok people they always presented only about the nature, the beaches, the culture and the elephants they never present about the city of Bangkok it's because they known that 99% of the Bangkok people they really felt boring about the concrete jungle and forest or beaches means Vacation and a long weekend break. So all the Thailand ads both for Thai people and for foreigners always about elephants and natures and beaches, and it's really funny that many of my western friends from the states, Canada, and some from Europe all of them told me that they never known before that Bangkok is a mega city like this, they just came here for beaches, elephants and full moon party and some of them even thought that Thai people still use an elephant as the transportations in the country😂😂😂 and yes now all of them already moved to live here in Bangkok and call its home.
      You are very welcome my friend🙏😊💕

    The terms "First World" (the US and its allies), "Second World" (the USSR and its allies), and "Third World" (countries not aligned with the First or Second World) were coined during the Cold War as political categories, not necessarily indicative of development levels. When considering development levels, Thailand is classified as an upper-middle-income economy with a booming industrial and service-oriented sector, showing significant progress in social and economic development.

    You’re right. I’m Thai and a US citizen (I went through neutralization process and never get married to get the status). 10 years ago when I was in college, my classmate asked if I am a prostitute since I am from Thailand. I’m a nerd all my life and my clothing style is always a shirt and long jeans. It was so embarrassing being asked this kind of question because I just realized this guy is an idiot and I was seen being associated with such a rude person.
