Americans call most Asian countries a third world until they visit here. I just visited Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Phoenix. All look like going down the tube. KL, Bangkok, Saigon, or Jakarta are way safer than those cities. They even call Singapore a third world where the human development index is higher than that of the U.S, U.K, and most western countries. Putting down Asia is not going to make their country better.
Agree very strongly with your perspective. This is similar in Canada.

They only see the world through medias and tv programs.

Hi, it's fine, truly. They can call Thailand what they like. Most Thai people do not get bothered by nonsense. We are all trying to live our best lives since we only have one chance to do it. 😇
This is good thinking. Cheers!
I noticed that almost right away ... the social issues we get all hot over in the West are just 'people's opinions' over here. Issues like marriage equality are just more of these opinions .. some people are for it, some people are not ... the ones that are not for it are usually just against it because they feel it's part of their tradition and would like to keep it, but also don't get bent out of shape if someone says they don't mind if two people if the same sex are allowed to live together and be treated as family under the law ... arguments are "I think I am for it ... I think I am against it ... okay, that's interesting, would you like some more ice in your beer?"
I'm from California, and you can say our major cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles are becoming a Third World Country with all of the homeless tent cities popping up.
Canada is similar. Actually the Canadian economy has been doing much worse than the US, and our tent cities are somehow being built in freezing temperatures.

Thank you for speaking out for Thailand. As you said, Thailand still has many issues. I, as Thai, I really don't mind if someone calls Thailand a third-world country. We are in the process of developing and solving the problems. Not sure when will this country be on the same level as the developed countries. But one thing i can assure foreigners is Thai people will always welcome everybody as our guests and be happy to see you guys happy here. 😊
Thank you for the kind words! I think that it's good to discuss problems and try to fix them, and this is good for every country. I think western media tries to point at problems in other countries in order to avoid discussing or fixing their own problems. Cheers!
I love Thailand and the Thai people ... I have yet to meet a Thai that has been anything than friendly and patient with me as I try to make stupid jokes in a language I have no mastery of at all ( I tell my friends back home when they ask if I have learned to speak any Thai, that I'm trying, but most Thai Soi Dogs understand more Thai words than I do ... but I am able to speak Thai a bit better than most Soi Dogs can!)
Recently, I often see videos of American male UA-camrs moving to Thailand from New York or L.A. in the United States. I live in an Asian country, but I have a lot of American male friends, so I often hear from them. They work in the U.S. or South Korea, but they often go to Thailand on vacation. I think Thailand is a safer country than some of the more certain parts of the United States. Also, for Western men, Thailand is the most open-minded country among many Northeast Asian and Southeast Asian countries. South Korea and Japan are very expensive and culturally conservative. By comparison, Thailand is an open culture, and the cost of living is higher than it used to be, but it is cheaper than in Northeast Asian countries. There are a lot of things to do and see in Thailand, so I feel like it's a good fit for Western men. So, like I said, my American male friends often go to Thailand every time they vacation. Oh, and you seem like such a nice person. Your videos always look friendly and cultured. I feel it in your face.
Thanks for your input! I agree with you. I think many men prefer the values and culture in Asia. There is more value placed on men, whereas western society tends to devalue men.
Great video, Cal. 😊 I agree with everything you said. As an expat in Asia for twenty years, I think this is an exciting place to be culturally and economically. And you don't get the woke politics as you know. I tell my friends that unlike the West, in Asia you can say Merry Christmas around Christmas time without worrying about offending someone.😅
Problems with S. Korea/Japan isn't that they are "culturally conservative" - Thailand can be conservative in its cultural and traditional ways as well - but the Korean and Japanese are racially-jealous nations. They don't let you be a part of their culture because they are super protective of their homogeneous racial unity (and that's why they are disappearing due to low birth rates). The Thai culture, on the other hand, is not racially jealous in the way of East Asian. Thais are keen to let foreigners participate in their culture, and they have been like this for many centuries. You can read the La Loubère (the French diplomat dispatched to Ayuthaya)'s account of the kingdom of Siam in the 17 century and the "openness" of the Thai cultural psyche was already there.
@@FingersKungfu Good point ... and while they are indeed open to other cultures, visiting, even living here if they can look after themselves, they are very protective in keeping Thailand for Thais ... ie. no working or buying land except under very controlled circumstances that make sure Thailand doesn't become like my home 'county' in Nova Scotia Canada, which has largely been bought up by Germans and Swiss who don't live there except maybe ever 2 or 3 years they come to spend a month or two in the summer, so they contribute very little to the local economy, except push up the cost of land and homes.
I am Thai. I start to learn English. Your English is easy to understand for me. Your topic is interesting.
I'm glad it's helpful! The Canadian accent is an easy one to learn from. Thanks for the kind words.
@@thebangkokguide I can improve my English skill from you too. And I can't remember seeing many other UA-camrs discuss this topic. Thanks

Hello! Thanks for the comment!
Yes, we Thailand is a 3rd world country BUT people living a better life because everything are cheap also the city is more developed than in the states or any countries in Europe.
It's all about most people in the west and especially in the states they never even go out of the country and see the real world so when they study about another countries they just look at the GDP of the country and judge the country only by the GDP!!!
Yes, they may be right at most countries in the world but not Thailand and Bangkok where we have a very low GDP and it's because everything are cheap and we also grown most of the foods by ourselves so that's made the GDP of the country very low while some of our poor populations may live a better life than some people in the west or on the states.
And That's why a lot of people in the states thought that Bangkok is a 3rd world country while it's much more developed than where they lived but they never know because they never see the real world and they believed that their countries are more developed because they are the 1st world.
I have to say we Thai are so proud to be the 3rd world while we could live here in the paradise and of course never want to be the 1st world where there are only the word "1st world" but everything expensive and people live a hard life and also the city not that modern.
I think that western media often portrays non-western countries negatively because it distracts the populations of their own countries. Western countries have many problems, which seem to be getting worse.. but western media and elites just point at problems in other countries rather than fix their own.
@@thebangkokguide yes, I totally agree my friend. Probably it's all about money!!! And I means not only western people my friend but also the Thai people too!!! When the Thai made their movies such as "Ong-Bak" the famous Thai movie that made by Tony Ja and all the Thai people but they still made Thailand and Bangkok in the movie looks like the worst place in the world and looks really like a shithole country even the Bangkok people still confused about those scenes but most Bangkok people still love the movie too and that's because they known that noone here in Bangkok and also people in the west want to see the skyscrapers of Bangkok in the movie but they rather want to see the shithole place on earth where they could feel sorry for them in the movie and could made them felt a little better about their own life because there are still someone had more struggled life than them and finally after movir they could go home and have a sweet dream and ready to work for tomorrow.
Also all the Thai travalling Ads too my friend both fot foreigners and also for Bangkok people they always presented only about the nature, the beaches, the culture and the elephants they never present about the city of Bangkok it's because they known that 99% of the Bangkok people they really felt boring about the concrete jungle and forest or beaches means Vacation and a long weekend break. So all the Thailand ads both for Thai people and for foreigners always about elephants and natures and beaches, and it's really funny that many of my western friends from the states, Canada, and some from Europe all of them told me that they never known before that Bangkok is a mega city like this, they just came here for beaches, elephants and full moon party and some of them even thought that Thai people still use an elephant as the transportations in the country😂😂😂 and yes now all of them already moved to live here in Bangkok and call its home.
You are very welcome my friend🙏😊💕

lived in grey england for the past four years and now i understand why
I often wonder if the reason that the UK was so successful at colonization was because so many people wanted to leave lol
Considering it's not a part of NATO or the Warsaw Pact makes it a third world country by definition of the term that many get wrong. Third world has nothing to do with economics. Thailand is a vibrant economically healthy country compared to it's neighbors.
That’s the correct definition. I find it is used very inaccurately in media. Cheers!
Bangkok is disproportionately developed than the rest of the country. It is not representative of the average Thai people experience. Even some Bangkokians forget how far removed they are from their rural breathren. I'd say we are far better than some "3rd world" countries but as whole we got a long way to go.
This is true. But we have similar situations in the west... the levels of development in major cities are generally much higher than smaller rural areas. But I agree with your point. Thanks for the comment!

Just started watching your video and offer a correction. If you look up what makes a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd world country, it is not about how developed they are. It is their alignment with the USA or Russia. 1st is USA, 2nd is Russia and 3rd is not aligned with either USA or Russia.
That's correct. I discuss that towards the end of the video, and how the whole terminology is outdated and based on the cold war alignments, and is now incorrectly used. Thanks for your input!
Yeah, I should have watched the whole video before commenting.
It’s alright. I probably should have mentioned it a bit earlier but got caught up in my rant 😂 cheers
I am aware of the original meaning of this classification of countries into three categories. Thailand was vehemently anti-communist throughout the Cold War. They aligned fully with the US and sent tens of thousands of troops to fight in both the Korean War and Vietnam War. Most of the US bombing runs on Vietnam and Laos were conducted from US air bases in Thailand. Thousands of Thai mercenaries were also the main foreign ground combat forces fighting on Laotian soils against the NVA's infiltrations. with all these dedications and sacrifice it had done for the Free World, Thailand is truly a First World country by the original definition.
I can accept that we are still third world country with many problems that wait to solve but I'm still happy in this country
I can eat all of the time , I can enjoy my life with my family like go to beaches , mountain , etc. however we are so chill out that's why our people are so disorganized they threw the trash on the ground or anything that's why westerner stil called us a third world country 🇹🇭❤️🙏 btw have a great day and god bless you krub

I'm Thai. I admit Thailand is the 3rd world country. Too much social inequality, poverty here. 😊😉
This is true. The inequality level is very high in Thailand. I think that it's good to look at problems within the country. My main issue is that western media and politicians often criticize other countries..and this just deflects attention from problems in western countries, which they don't fix. Thanks for your input!

😮 I see. 😊
The poverty is the US is worse than Thailand lol! Plus if Thais focused on Actual Issues plaguing the Society it would’ve been better! Condemning Exposing Scammers, Condemning Motocycles using the Sidewalk/Footpath, Making Thais keep their city clean by picking up trash and disposing it properly, Advocate for Creative Better Efficient Public Infrastructure, Donate to Organizations that Contribute to Building/Cleaning/Repairing the City, more Walking Streets, Encourage more Creative Skywalks, etc.
Thumbs up 👍 Cal

Thailand is partially 3rd and partially 2nd world country. It is very common for the 3rd-2nd world country to have one major hub of relative wealth like the Capital City and then a lot of poverty beyond it.
That's true. I wonder whether the west isn't trending in that direction as well though... and media and politicians like to point at non-western countries while their own societies are actually going backwards.
Thailand WAS a third world country. Like 30 - 40 years ago or so. But now it doesn’t feel like a third world anymore but it also not a first world country neither.
I agree with this perspective: I think the term developing is better.

I’m Canadian and I live in Toronto. The transit system is very outdated. Comparing to Thailand, it’s like Canada is living in the past. There are only 3 subway lines (initially 4 but 1 was permanently closed) and yet the train is out of service ALL THE TIME. The train is dirty and full of homeless. I don’t feel safe at all when I’m on the train but I have no choice but to suffer. Believe or not we had no phone reception on a subway for who knows how long. You basically got cut off from the outside world and just recently we finally are able to get the phone and internet connection on the train but only if when you’re at the station or only when the train is above ground. Freaking ridiculous. Stone age. Monopoly plays a really big part in Canadian society. Trudeau has got to go! I actually feel like I’m living in a 3rd world country. It’s time for Canada to wake up and catch up with the rest of the world!
Sorry I don’t normally comment on the internet and thank you for listening to my rants.
The rant is welcome. I felt the same way the last time I was back. I totally forgot about how cell reception disappears totally on the subway as well. The monopolies in Canada have crushed development and growth altogether. I heard from a friend about the homeless situation in the TTC getting out of hand as well. I haven't been back in about 5 years... will be back in a couple months, and I'm not expecting the best environment.
@@thebangkokguide Canada 10 years ago and Canada nowadays is very different. Canada used to be better and safer or Toronto in this sense but now it’s far worse. It’s like we’re going backwards. The inflation rate is skyrocketing and is nowhere to come down. Everything is so expensive and people are struggling to afford food and groceries. The quality of life and the cost of living are contradictory. Forget about housing, as a millennial, I don’t think it’s possible in my lifetime to buy a house here unless I have to move out of town in the middle of nowhere.
You’d better prepare yourself coming back here. It’s depressing and saddening to see that we’ve come to this. Politics asides, Trudeau is a disgrace. It pains me to see Canada like this. I love Bangkok but Toronto is home. Still Toronto is nowhere near Bangkok in almost all aspects 😂 I hope you at least have a great time coming home.
Thailand past 10 years had a soldier government and they do for people of country , not like a gentleman with evil mind.
Interesting perspective. Thanks for your input!
No, Thailand is not considered a "third world" country. Thailand is classified as an upper-middle income country by the World Bank, with a GDP rank of 24th globally. This places Thailand firmly in the high-middle income category, not a "third world" designation.
Furthermore, Thailand is a member of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) Development Centre, which includes many advanced and developing economies. This indicates Thailand is recognized as a developing economy with potential for further growth and development.
Thailand has some current problems that it is working to solve. This is normal for any developing economy as it progresses. The key point is that Thailand is not considered a "third world" country based on its current economic status and classification. It is an upper-middle income, developing economy with plans to reach developed country status by 2037 through continued economic and social reforms. Overall, Thailand's economic situation and trajectory are quite positive compared to the connotations of the outdated "third world" label.
I agree. Very good summary! Cheers

I am a Thai and I don't really mind when people refer to us as a 3rd world country. I have no delusion comparing Thailand with those super powers in the world, we have our problems BUT in the last 10-20 years I have to say that instead of talking about the rate of development in countries, I would rather use the rate of declines in countries as reference. I used to live in Spain for 5 years and 10 years in Germany in the early 2000 and if someone would tell me back then 20 years ago that wealthy westerner would rather spend their retirement years in Thailand than their own country, I would never believe it. But here I am witnessing it all happening. In 20 years I have witnessed the declines of the western world, the declines of the social structures, the declines of cultural values. While westerner emphasized on advancing technology, embracing the change to the so called new eras of expressing freedom(to the point that backfired them), I feel like they neglected their cultural heritage, their transitional values. Thailand is on a declines too but at a much slower pace, maybe because of the influence of Buddhism as the major believe, I don't know. I might sound like a conservative but the world 20 years ago from how I remembered it, it was a much nicer place to be in, maybe not as convenient but definitely less problems, less tension or maybe I am just getting old. haha 😊
I agree with your perspective. Just take a look at a few pictures of Bangkok in 2000 compared with any western city, and it shows which direction each society is moving in! Thanks for your input.
Totally agreed with you.

Many western countries have settled with a belief that they ARE the best and always will be which has made them ignorant to the truth of what is happening around the world. This has led to many western countries being complacent. On the other hand asian countries are continuously trying to prove to these western countries that they can catch up, therefore, always developing and even surpassing them at this point.

The term “3rd world” was originally a political determination during WW2, so in the traditional sense it was never a “3rd world” nation. Unfortunately that has changed over time as it became an ethnocentric identification of primarily “non-western” nations. Thailand is in actuality a newly industrialized nation and in many ways much more advanced than many nations considered “1st world”. Thailand is a country of contrast between ultra modern and very traditional and is incredibly intriguing, in many ways, much more than most western nations.
Very well put! Thank you for your input!

True! My mom is the example..actually my whole family. Life for them defines by family and value of being good Buddhist..I come to realized how much is deep in our lives. They willing to share and give up everything or make decisions on things that me and my American family cant understand. I found that while westerner looks things at the investment way but Thai people looking at just the way. Trust me, most of the Thai are poor because they giving away too much, that is why and my family is in there. I’m glad Thailand never under colonize, this makes it real and simple and also solid.

@thebangkokguide and to think it is great no doubt, although middle to late 90,s until around 05, 06. Ten times better and like many places a whole lot cheaper, but who cares it's Thailand.
I’ve definitely heard this. Sadly I first arrived in 2015. Would have been nice to visit back then!
I love living here in BKK. It has lots of problems and heaps of downsides but if someone asks me to move to Europe or East Asia. I would say that I wouldn’t move there. BKK is an easy going, noisy and lively city.

It's safe..but no chance for the poor to get ahead.
@@HisHimmer define 'get ahead'? I am about 1 km off the main highway and there are at least 4 little local restaurants where small groups of 5 to 10 people hang out. A person will set up a small 'restaurant' in their front yard where friends come over to buy a cheap meal and drinks (10 baht for some food and 10 baht for a cheap Thai whiskey, or bring their own beer if they want) and spend the evening with friends after work having a good time bullshitting and singing songs ... when I was growing up in rural Eastern Canada in my late teens & twenties, we would do something similar most weekends, and to my way of thinking that was 'getting ahead' ... but yeah, if your priorities are dying with the bigger pile of money than your neighbors, then Thailand is probably not the right place for you (and not judging you if that's your desire, as it turned out I moved to Toronto when I was in my early 30s because that's what I was after as well ... in my case I consider it a bad decision, other than that it lead to me meeting my Thai wife in Toronto and ending up living here in Thailand and discovering what really counts.

I’m from Philly and was impressed how easy it was to get around and the multiple options for food and shopping. I have to drive to everything back home while in Bangkok I could find everything I needed within a 5 minute walk. Infrastructure such as sidewalks are not up to par but other than that BKK is alright with me.

@@thebangkokguideAsk the average local do they think the MRT is cheap and most will say no it's expensive. As for all the fancy malls, your average Thai doesn't shopi in them! They go in them to make use of the aircon. Or go to the food courts. I've walked around many of them all over the country most of the stores are empty. House hold debt in Thailand is one of the highest in the world. Sure central Bangkok is developed but just go over to khlong toey which is central and a hugh slum.
@glenloader639 This is true. But to be fair I don’t shop much in the malls either… but I do find that there are a lot of nice public or semi-public spaces to enjoy, even if nobody can afford them. The food court is my prefer spot as well lol. Sometimes I wonder who is spending all the money at these malls! Bangkok is definitely a world apart from much of Thailand as well. Thanks for the input!

Who will call Thai people the world 8-9-10-100 We feel indifferent, not in trouble, we don't care about the 1st world. We have traditions, culture, happiness and freedom in our own way.
Bangkok seemed pretty first world to me. It's the only world I want to be in. Less than 2 weeks and I'll be living there full time. Yeah there's poverty there. I'm in Philadelphia right now. I was born and raised here left when I was 18. Came back for a few years and left again and never came back except to visit.
There's plenty of poverty here. There's plenty of problems here. Oh I'm sure there are problems in Thailand too but there's problems everywhere when you look for them. Just don't look. Don't worry. Be happy. A lot of people making videos about stuff that they're just trying to get clicks on and hopefully make some money. You have to sift through it all...

The USA 🇺🇸 is slowly becoming a 3rd world country. Just give it time
I think many parts of it probably would already be considered "third world" or underdeveloped. This is true for much of the west. Thanks for the input!
Slowly? It's already halfway there - just look at what we have in the Whitehouse.
@@paulh7798 haha I was trying to be somewhat positive 🤙🏽
@@sonhuynh8222 😂
I think it is at the moment.
I'm Thai. I used to be upset easily when Westerners thought of Thailand as an underdeveloped country. I'm in the US for school. One of my professors asked me if we used elephants as our transportation. I could not believe people still asked this kind of question. However, I got to the point I feel good letting Americans believe Thailand is the 3rd world country while the US itself is going down hill. I was in the US from 2006 to 2015 and it was a much better country back then.
Haha it's alright. To be fair, I used to have a laugh telling Americans that I lived in an igloo in Canada and that we had wandering polar bears in the streets. Eventually I'd break it to them that Canada was basically the same as the Northeastern US and it was a good laugh for all.
You make some great points about how outdated and inaccurate terms like "first world" and "third world" are these days. It's crazy that people are still throwing them around so casually, considering they originated during the Cold War era and don't really reflect the complex realities of countries in the modern world. These labels just don't capture the nuances and rapid development happening in places like Thailand and other parts of Asia. It's about time we moved beyond this overly simplistic and often misleading terminology, don't you think?
PS. Thailand's HDI is 8.03, which places the country in the Very High category.
Very well put. Personally, I think that media and elites in western countries use these types of terms as a form of propaganda in order to both prop up their own power internally, and justify interventions and conflicts abroad. I think that these terms may have always been used for this purpose, and would happily discard them! Thanks for the input!
I totally agree with you. Most countries in S E Asia have a very high level education, medical, transport infrastructure and socially inclusive culture that some "Western Countries " would be totally jealous of.👍

@12-vn2uh2it’s actually opposite, if you are poor you better work in USA because of higher salary then keep money to retire in Thailand, but if you are already rich, then Thailand is better, you can hire maid for cheaper price. Less property tax
Sometimes, a country wants to be called "developing" rather than "developed" because they want to receive "special treatment" from World Monetary Organisation.
This is a very good point. I recall discussing this subject with an NGO worker who spent time in Africa. He said that the numbers around some of the worst infectious diseases were entirely made up to get more funding, as there were no actual verifications that occurred.
As Thai, I believe that Developed only economy, material things or infrastructure without morality or peaceful is not sustainable.

Cal, so true! Being asian American having lived/worked in Asia 22+ yrs, I find it so true! ‘3rd World’ is interpretive as while the US is considered ‘first world’, there’s much homelessness, violence and racial discrimination as well poverty
I agree. I think these categories are very inaccurate. Most countries have pockets of development and underdevelopment... and then there are the issues of violence, gangs and social discord that are more prominent in some western cities.

Thailand has never been considered a Third-world country because it was an ally of the U.S. during the Cold War.
Thailand is Still 3rd world , see its gdp per capita and hdi , It's not a devloped Country yet

Another point worth making. So I split my time in the outskirts of Chiang Mai and in the mountains about 40k west of the city. The people in the mountains are extremely poor and have basically nothing but everyone is happy and supporting thriving families (much more so than the city). Yes it's 3rd world but the average person in the West will think these people are struggling or in some bad situation which they need saving from. This is totally false. The people in America struggle far more and are less happy. Even in Chiang Mai where they have more money they are struggling more and not having families like the poorer people. Basically we've been lied to about poverty I feel, which is only really a curse if you live in cities and don't own your property, have bills etc..., all the stuff that's killing us in America.
I think what is different in Thailand is the family/friends support system and people’s expectations in life. In the US the culture/society expects you to stand on your own and if you can’t there is supposed to be a public safety net which is too often inadequate.
The community aspect of life here makes for a very different environment which is more favorable for life generally.
Seattle, Portland, SF, Chicago, St Louis, Baltimore, DC, Cleveland and Detroit are all 3rd world cities. Visit them to see for yourself.
Yep, been to a few of those... Walking through DC makes for a very interesting contrast as you walk out of the capitol area!

Even majority of Thai can't speak English but Thai speak from heart and passionate and positive thinking from the teach of Buddhism. Thailand has developed gradually and not compete other countries.
