    Got some news about a long-time coming project in Baltimore. They were picking which transit mode they wanted to go with for the Red Line project, and they finally picked Light Rail, and thankfully not the dumb BRT option. Hopefully a sign that everything is moving forward on that one since Baltimore definitely needs it.

    The stats on that Brazilian project are wild. Going from $1.5bn to $5.2bn. No wonder they cancelled the monorail. And now they have an even better system for $620m! For once someone in power making a sensible decision. It probably has higher capacity too.

      1.5 and 5.2 are in Brazilian reals. 5.2 bln reals is roughly 1 bln USD

    Salvador citizen here, excellent coverage. I must say that the LRT (over here we call VLT) project is looong overdue, we are without suburban train service for 3+ years. There are some drawbacks since there will be no connections to Acesso Norte and Terminal da França, but the extra coverage in Piatã, Águas Claras and Cajazeiras is welcome.
    A curiosity announced during the inauguration of civil works is that there will be spaces dedicated for cargo

      This is because many fishermen and fisher women live close and traditionally used the train to bring their fish and other sea food to the São Joaquim market/fair. It is a very considerate detail.

    Hello, just wanted to let you know that the City Council of the italian city Brescia has officially approved the construction of a tram line, its construction should start in 2025 and another line should be build in the future that will share part of the tracks. Both lines will connect the West and East sides of the city (which are not served by the metro line) to the city center and the railway station, connecting with the metro line in those two places.
    This will be the return of tramlines in the city.

    Paris is definitely doing the right things as far as transit. Other cities should be taking notes. If I go to Paris in a few years, I'll check out the Metro. Would be a very interesting experience for me.

    I’m from Seattle, and we have a lot of cool things coming up! The 8-mile light rail extension to Lynnwood opens at the end of August, the G Line RapidRide (the first BRT here to feature median stations) opens in September, and in the next few years we’ll see the Line 2 light rail extended into our city center and Line 1 south to Federal Way (a town so car-centric it was named after the highway, haha)

    Nice pronunciations of Rosny-sous-Bois and Rosny-Bois-Perrier, those are tricky! In a few months you'll have mastered all European languages.
    I still have to visit lines 11 and 14's new stations! It's so weird to see line 14 finally open when I was a teen, and 20 years later, the project is finally over. Makes you feel old :D

    Your beginning clip on Paris looks very nice! I am a big fan of modern low rise skyscrapers. And I love that view of the Eiffel tower with some them modern low rise apartments!

    You make great and very professional videos.
    One small correction that, for some reason, a lot of youtuber s make. Maybe it's not so widely used as I believed but in Spain (and other places) we read initialism (apparently the word for an abbreviation of a brand name that uses the initial letters of a longer name) as a word, if possible, so CAF is read as CAF, (Kaf) not C.A.F . We will say the letters if it's not readable like BMW or BBVA.

    New Zealand’s first mention 🎉🇳🇿 .
    While the budget funding for rail is nice, it’s really just the bare minimum to pay for upkeep and modernisation that should have been done years ago. And the funding for new rail projects has been changed to be less government funding and no more funding through road freight charges and taxes like the Auckland regional fuel tax. Which kind of makes this funding announcement bitter sweet.
    6:53 Also that map of New Zealand rail lines is very misleading considering most of the lines are freight tracks with what seems like random colouring😅.

    At 7:07 ... how do you guys pronounce CAF, like him in the video or "kaff" or "tsaff", which one is correct?

      As far as CAF is an abbreviation which means Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles I suppose it's logical to pronounce it like I do. Just how it works for BMW or FBI.

      It should be "kaff", it's a Spanish company and that's how it's pronounced in Spain. It's only pronounced letter by letter if it's something that can't be read (in Spanish that is) like for example CRRC. "Tsaff" would be slavic pronunciation I guess.

    is it me or are the light rails in Salvador running on the left side in a right sided road??? or is it just some video edit from their marketing that went thru the whole thinking progress?

      @@cityforall if it has no crossing with cars, fine, but as far as I could see it's embedded in the road middle and on places or crossings...
      I can see this becomes some accident magnet... Some drivers are already with normal light rails more than overwhelmed, imagine the Counter wise driving one's....

      ​@@SirHeinzbond I'm not sure that it would by any different...
      A proper intersection must have red-lights stopping road vehicles before both tracks anyway.
      So, whether the trams run left or right, if there's an incursion past the red light, there will be a collision...
      If there are unsignaled crossings then yes it could be a problem, but a proper tram or LRT line should only have signaled crossings making the running side irrelevant.

      @@KyrilPG i can see it here in Zürich, i saw it in Munich, Stuttgart, Lisboa and i guess it is so in every other place were light rail and cars are crossing, you can always count on those who are distracted, have no clue about the light rail, ignore the signs or lights or those who are just plain simple stupid... there is no need to differentiate cause bicyclist, pedestrian, car driver all are basically the same... but then also some counter intuitive left hand way, i guess this will give some extra pepper...

    In its essence the grand paris express is very good & useful but why r they building it with such extravagance? Soo much money is being spent for this & even if the Parians are able to pay it off, they still should be spending the money more responsibly. Rents in the French capital are super high and the city needs loads of social housing and students housing so, Couldn't they build it in a more "minimal" way to reduce costs and allocate the saved money towards building more houses instead? 🤦🏽‍♂️🙄

      Disagree. Those station are going to be there forever and it's better to invest in good architecture, especially for a world class city like Paris.

      It's already pretty cheap tbh. And I think that good architecture enhance efficiency and user experience, ultimately improving the overall performance of the system. Good public transit provide good urbanism and is an excellent incentive to building more housing.

      Parisian here, and I do totally agree with Redswanz's answer. I can add three more things :
      • Esthetics are part of the french culture and as a french, I do really enjoy this aspect as It makes walking around in cities so much more enjoyable and interesting and makes your place feel special and unique.
      You can clearly see and feel the difference between the beautiful city-centers where architects cared about "good-looking" and the boring ugly buildings which were built in the outskirts between the 60's and 80's.
      • Also, making beautiful train stations is very important as It really stops the idea that public transportation is for second class citizens. People do feel honoured to take the Metro when their station is beautiful and clean. That can definitely make more people leave their cars for more sustainable ways of transportation as not only people who don't have the choice will choose the Metro.
      • The Grand Paris Express is an answer to decades of under-investment and neglect of the Paris surburbs as kinda everything is centered in Paris Inner City. Making beautiful stations is a huge message showing that the suburbs, who have long been made only to be functional, now also deserve to be beautiful, which is the little thing which make people feel that their place is unique and special, not just a dorm for people working in Paris anymore.
      Hope this makes you understand the choice to not neglect estethics on this project.

      The St Denis-Pleyel station highlighted in the video was built under 2 contracts. The first one, 1.9 billion Euros included 19.6 km of tunnel and equipment for line 16, and the concrete shell for this station and 3 others. The fancy stuff from Kengo Kuma associates cost about 200 million Euros. NYC spent a similar amount ($ 2.4 bn) for the 2.4 km extension of line 7 to Hudson Yards with a single station (the 10th Ave/42nd St stop was canceled for budgetary reasons), London metro 2021 Battersea extension cost 1.3 bn Euros for 3.2 km, and you think that Paris is irresponsible!

      The cost, compared to other major cities, is very reasonable.
      The Grand Paris Express is expected to be used by several million people every day, so you don't build a tiny for a hub station that will receive the equivalent of a mid-sized city every day.
      The Grand Paris Express is part of the larger Grand Paris project that also covers housing and the "multicenterization" of the Greater Paris area like Tokyo.
      There are many housing developments linked to the Grand Paris and Grand Paris Express, some stations are even awarded in contracts with the simultaneous building of housing in the vicinity.
      The new stations are designed to be anchor points around which the centers of this multicentric plan will develop.
      Saint-Denis Pleyel will be the terminal hub station of a line expected to pass 1 million daily riders in the coming months... so it needs to be big. Why not make it also beautiful?
      Accessibility and crowds management imperatives require dozens of escalators and elevators, they're not building them just to be fancy...
      And, as was said by others above, beautiful and practical infrastructure is the best way to make people drop their car and use transit. They could see their daily commute as something that is nice, comfortable and seamless, and to even be proud of their local station instead of just being utilitarian.
      So these locations can also become more than just a bland place of passage and turn into a real place where people meet.
      Like the plaza in front of SDP station and its lit stairs. It's bound to become a place where people meet, where office workers take their lunch, etc.
      They want this new infrastructure to be as useful as it is memorable and beautiful.
