As a former student in Paris in 2021, I was really impressed by the city transport system. Well-connected and efficient, minus the delays because at times some dude threw himself in the rails or a bag was forgotten at the train. Getting access to all modes of transportation for just 38 euros a month was an absolute bargain.

The drivers are paid by their companies. And those companies are paid by the Ile de France region which uses tax, Navigo pass and tickets to pay them. Not by the state. So yes.
Yeah, that whole section was terrible. French are known for striking for the smallest thing so for him to argue that they are wildly underpaid and his evidence is the strikes is a terrible argument. In addition, the did another strike after the pay hike! It’s just the French way - strike as much as you can.

I’ve lived in Paris my entire life and I can confirm the bike lanes are great since the pandemic ! I’ve being taking the bike every work day for the past 4 years now, and since 2020 there was a real increase in quality. There are more lanes and they’re now separated from the cars and the buses. If you come to Paris, rent a bike !

The first time I was in Paris, I was very happy my friend ce to pick me up at the train station. The metro is a fascinating and immense labyrinth. Right now I'm for the third time in Paris and I got to admit I really enjoy the metro system here. It's efficient, you can get everywhere you need and there are coming like every 5 minutes.
But I can imagine it being quite annoying if you live here and have to constantly use it.
I feel like daily users of most massive modern metro systems (not just Paris, but Moscow comes to mind) get accustomed to resting their bodies and minds during the various rides, and they restart themselves in time to catch transfers. I can't imagine that very many people grow to despise the routine, at least not even to the extent a bad urban commute where you're driving might.
@@crunchy_kvassI’ve done both in Paris, in rush hours it’s definitely less stressful to wait 5 minutes more for a train, than get stuck 5 minutes on every intersection. The only way car is less annoying, is 1. if you have a parking spot, 2. if it’s middle of night or 3. if you’re going to a suburb with bad connections.

no it's not. It's fine. I was born here ,I feel like home in the metro. The only real problem is that crime is on the rise and less and less locals actually take it.
I lived in Paris. Even though the metro was great, I hated it because I had to use it every day. I guess that's the problem with big cities: you spend a lot of time wasting your life on public transport.

As someone who lives near Paris and uses RER and parisian subway regularly I can confidently say that the transport system is really good when the trains are on time
but I can understand why its difficult to use for tourists.

Châtelet-Les Halles is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Major metro hub with a Westfield mall in the middle just to add to the confusion when you come up from the platforms and are searching for a way out 😵💫
There's Shinjuku in Tokyo. It's pretty much a gigantic station-mall too, with a railway station on top.

@@KyrilPG Having gone to both, I have to say that...... its a love/hate relationship I have for those two stations. You can literally spend a day there but its a literal nightmare, too many people, easy to get lost and if you want to cross both station from the beginning to the end ( Only YOU can describe what is the beginning and what's the end cause nobody really knows) you'll need 10 good minutes 😂😂
@@lhananas8875 I've been to both too and love them both. Shinjuku's logic can be a little hard to get at first, especially when you don't speak nor read Japanese.
But when you've traveled a bit it's not that complicated, there's international signage.
And Chatelet les Halles is even easier to navigate since the major overhaul. The sectors are easily identified and the new silvery tiling and brighter mood lighting are great, giving a roomy and clean feeling.
Maybe that's because I'm a born and raised Parisian.
But my friends from across the pond also like it, they've lost their initial apprehensions once they tried it and just followed the signs.
There's so much "legend" about it being a nightmare that most visitors have strong preconceived feelings well before experiencing it, so they brace for the worst or fear getting lost and don't really experience it with an open mind.
I just told them it's like a rollercoaster where you shouldn't close your eyes and not resist the forces.
In Chatelet just follow the signs and go with the flow : it's gonna be much easier than you thought. And they liked it for the energy and ant farm feeling.
The one that can be a bit more confusing is the humongous Haussmann Saint Lazare - Auber - Opera (+ Saint Augustin & Havre Caumartin) underground complex, with 3 different stops on the same line M3 and 2 stops on M9 serving different parts of the complex.
But it's quite fun and amazing to experience from end to end. Especially when simply stopping and watching the flow of people on the Auber RER mezzanine.
The one that I really don't like for some reason is the Montparnasse complex : long connecting tunnels and weird layout but lacking the energy and quirkiness of Chatelet les Halles and HSL Auber Opera.
As someone who uses the RER A frequently, I would say it also depends on which part of the line (if it has multiple branches) you use. I only use the A4 (the one that goes to Disney) frequently, with occasional trips to Paris. This branch is by far the best managed and the best to use, it has the least problems compared to the branches on the west part of the line (Poissy/Cergy and SGL).
One critic I can give to the RERs is that, contrary to the metro lines, RERs (and I'm guessing Transiliens as well) have few correspondences between other lines outside of Paris itself. It leads to very complicated situations when there is maintenance happening and a station has to be shut down. Around two months ago there were maintenance work on a station called Bussy-Saint-George, which was in-between the stations Torcy and Val d'Europe. To go to Disneyland, which is right after Val d'Europe, tourists had to get off at Torcy, take one of the two buses put in place to either Val d'Europe or directly Disneyland. Another example is the station of Nation, which is the first RER A station when you enter Paris, which was closed. The only way to get to other stations in Paris was to get off at a station called Val de Fontenay two stations before and take the RER E to Paris.
So yeah, I hope we can at least have more correspondences outside of Paris and looking forwards for the Grand Paris Express.
i agree as someone who use the same line you have to go to the nearest big exchange point to go somewhere you want which is nation that is RER and metro station
the other branch on the east side works well too (because it's RATP managed, and the poissy/cergy branch -not st germain- are managed by the SNCF)

11:04 that's not an RER train, that's a German ICE (Intercity Express) train. Although the ICE does also have problems with punctuality.
And although the ICE goes to Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est, that's a German train station in the video. 😁
I've been living in Paris for a while, using the metro, the RER, the bikes etc. + I'm very curious about these matters I found this video to be a great and accurate synthesis of the subject.
Whenever I go to Paris, I am always pleased with how generous the metro system is here. You have metros everywhere, they barely take any time to arrive and it is very easy to go where you want. The only big problem are the stations themselves. I grew up in bruxelles and here you just have to go down stairs and you directly arrive in front of the metro, and then you only have to validate. Paris is a complete maze, where everything look the exact same because of the bathroom esthetic that's going on everywhere and you never know where you're going and you barely have any indication. While I understand it is to avoid over crowding, it makes it very difficult to find the right line and make you lose time in the corridors. It is not to say that Bruxelles is better than Paris, our metro is critically underdeveloped for a city this important and entire chunks of the city are not connected, and you can wait up to 10 min for the next metro. Plus there are theoretically 6 lines, but it is really 3 lines with minor differences, and one of them is an underground tram. Like one of the line, line 2, is the exact same as line six, but shorter. That means that you have no reason to ever take the line, and you have to change metro if you want to continue on line 6. Brilliant!
As someone who lived in Paris and London over the last couple of years, the Paris Metro was definitely better which is more and more plagued by resource problems. The Elizabeth line was a great addition, but the rest of the network desperately needs modernisation and staff (not so much drivers) are underpaid.
Weekday transport is better in Paris than London as it has an amazing commuter network and it runs until after 1am. Also, Chatelet near closing hours was a pain - ended up almost getting locked in the adjacent mall. At the weekend, London used to have an advantage with the nighttube but it’s become less and less reliable in recent years. Plus, inner Paris is so much more walkable and conducive to bikes.
From my experience in a European capital, Berlin probably has the best transport with its trams and buses included, since it’s so well integrated.
Agreed, the driver's (whom pay I remind are payed 65,000+ a year) keep whinging and going on strike, this has led to a neglect in funding for the actual stations/experience and the foundational staff.
If you think Berlin is best, I assume you haven't lived in Madrid. 🤩

Also paris metro, rer etc. is much more cheaper than London. London train fares are redicously expensive. I was once quoted 60 quid on peak to go from reading to paddington. Luckly I wasn't in a rush that day I thought screw that and decided to drive and park my car in westfield shepherds bush car park where it costs 10 quid for 24 hours and tube it from there. It's a joke how expensive rail is in england
I'm pleased he put that bit in about the bikes. The Paris metro is well known, and as an occasional traveller to both, I'd say it's much cleaner, more efficient and comfortable than the London underground.
London has made great strides with safe bike lanes, but we tend to go for crap like painted lines, or spend vast amounts on something the Dutch would be impressed with. Which means you mostly get nothing. Paris have gone for a compromise, so you get protection, even if it's ugly stuff like concrete barriers from road works. Which means they have gone from very little bike infrastructure to lots in a couple of years.
Beside the automation on only two lines and the accessibility issue, I think this is a real good transit network. The combination of the fast RER trains with the more 'local' metro network gives a fast and dense network.
Metro line 4 is also in the process of being automated

@@orsaz924 Line 4 is actually already fully automated. If you count the 2 CDG airport shuttles and the Orly airport shuttles, that actually makes 6 fully automated GoA4 lines. With the Grand Paris Express 4 new metro lines, that should make 10 by 2026.

I've been living in Paris for 2 years and if I've got into the habit, like any real Parisian, of spitting on the metro😅 (especially line 13 which is literally hell on earth during crowded hours), I realize that I couldn't do without it and that the network is really great. Public transport is generally excellent in Paris.
A true parisian must be grumpy otherwise you get fined.
I used to live between place de Clichy and place Blanche, so it was either line 2 or 13 for me. I think I took line 13 three times? That was enough for me to consider early retirement haha

It's also terrible for those living outside the city limits who have to travel on line 13 on a daily basis. Thankfully the network is being expanded northward to make the commute easier for those who rely on line 13.
Great video and very informative. With that said, live in a major city in the United States for any length of time, and you will say that Paris is light years ahead of any city here. I've spent a lot of time using the Paris metro system and would rather use it (happily I might add) over anything in the United States.
Most American cities do suck at public transport. I've found Chicago and the northern East Coast to have the best systems. It's not necessarily that Paris is light years ahead, it's more that the US is light years behind every other major city in the world.

As a parisian living near line 11 I am really excited about the new tarins (MP14 replacing the MP59). The handle problem never was a big issue for me, but I understand how people wouldn't like touching that piece of metal. Concerning the punctuality of trains, I blame the management system for not giving enough care to the conductors. And social movements essentially backed by the CGT are definitely in the right. Impeding the network is the best way to get your voice heard but it sure is annoying.

For the price per month, ~90€ it's huge, but nearly no pariser take the monthly subcripition (we take the yearly one).
And when you work, your company is obliged by law to pay at least between 50% and 100% of your subscirption.
In my case, they paid 100% of it 🤷
As a Parisian, I can assure you that the transport network in the city is surely the best in the world, we have here a motto that says that you can go anywhere in the city while changing train at most 2 times, though the problem is more outside of the city, as out of 12 million inhabitants in the region, 10 million of them live in the suburbs. Outside Paris there are still many different transports available but they are way less reliable and the passing frequency is also way smaller than in Paris itself. That is why the Grand Paris project was started. This video was very interesting, though I think it would have been better to focus more on the suburbs than on the city itself, because that is the big challenge for the region, as transport in Paris are complicated to improve

The "president" is piggy backing on previous ongoing projects in other cities, which started without his help and without waiting for him.

@@_bearcat regions started working on it since 2014 thanks to the MAPTAM law.
First results can be seen in Nantes (tram-train) or Bordeaux (official launch in 2018), and smaller results in Hauts-de-France (TERGV), ARA (unique ticketing system), Centre (capacity augmentation between Blois and Tours), and before COVID the Thello service on the line Marseille-Toulon-Nice for PACA.
@@justsamoo3480 It's actually a project in many metropolis, but many rail hubs are really saturated so a RER is sometimes impossible before extending capacity by improving the signalling (which is currently being implemented) and making new tracks.
In Toulouse, a RER will be impossible before the first phases works for the HSR (= LGV) which will consist in extending the width from 2 to 4 tracks north of Toulouse to Saint-Jory and the actual HSR (by 2028) which will free some capacity on the classic line for more regional and freight trains. But projects of RERs are a thing since many decades. Macron only said this to take advantage of the Strasbourg RER which opened some days after his speech and was obviously planned way before he was president.

At rush hour RER A is an absolute nightmare (except at it's extremities). It's so bad that a lot of people won't use it during these periods. Hopefully, the Grand Paris Express will help ease the congestion.
I take it everyday and I don't find it that awful, except when there is a problem, then it becomes a nightmare I agree because so many people use it and they all have to find alternative.
The part of the video about the catacombs is full of mystakes notably about the fine which is clearly not 3700€ except in the "val de grace". Most of the time, people caught in this place pay around sixty euros.
We French (and especially Parisians) love to complaint about everything ! But we must admit that Paris Transit System is really efficient taking account of its longevity. Actually the system is built to make cars useless
I would like to say that if they remain illegal and potentially dangerous for the uninitiated, the Catacombs ("KTA") of Paris have been a major place of Parisian Counter Culture since the 1960's.
People usually don't appreciate what they have until they are presented with other poor options. I visited Paris in Nov 2022. I found the ile de France transportation system quite efficient compared to many. It may not be the perfect but at least it works.
P/s: I was caught up in the Nov 10th strike😂. I didn't mind since i had all the time on earth. I hope they were able to solve all their issues.
Exactly. Try getting around on public transit in cities of a comparable size like Rio de Janeiro (3 metro lines, "kind of" 3 light rail/tram lines and many, many buses) or LA (2 metro lines, 5 light rail lines and many, many buses) and you'll be very happy with the Paris system with all its issues and problems...
well, I live in Paris and I really love our public transport. every time I travel around Europe I remember how lucky we are. I live inside Paris circle and the closest Metro station is 100 meters away from me, along another RER station (30 meters) and bus line (40 meters). I can't complain!
More and more people are coming to Paris which makes the metro lines crowded always, also peopel that are not Parisians and work here, take it every day (more than 15 million)
Gave up commuting using RER B and the metro lines after 3 months. I was getting depressed and spent about 3-4 hours a day in 'sardine' mode. Bought a 125 scooter and then a bigger 500c 3 wheeler and never looked back.

I think an important problem with the age of the metro is the density of stations.
The Paris metro is the densest in the world, and on average in Paris you're about 500m away from a metro station. What that means is that though you're unlikely to spend much walking to and from a station, you'll spend a lot more time on the train. Because the stations on any line are close together, the train cannot accelerate much, and it spends more time stopped at a station as well.
The Paris metro is slow. Line 14 was a huge change for this reason, and it certainly helps that its station are much further apart.
Lines equipped with tyres tend to compensate their frequent stops with strong acceleration and braking, that helps a lot.
And the thrill ride is part of the charm ! 🤣
That's why the Paris metro is complemented with the RER network that allows crossing the city with much fewer stops (on average one every 2km). Any large and dense city would ultimately require such a double-scale network. That is the case in NYC, Tokyo, Berlin or Paris.
Half of the Navigo Pass cost is payed by the users employers. So technically when you have a job that requires a daily use of transport, it costs half of the 84€ you spoke about
I must disagree that illegal part of Catacombs is not intresting. It is actually really intresting with lots of arts, cultural and historical relics remains, incredibly intresting rooms and tunnels and tones of secrets to discover. I was there few times and thats one of the most amazing things i have ever done honestly

Line 11 trains are called MP59 but there were actually built in 1966. These trains are going to be replaced by next years. Replacement was delayed by the fact that a new maintenance facility needed to be completed with the new extension of line.
Parisian here. I use the metro a lot, line 11 in particular.
The lack of staff and all works being done atm made the metro a very very shitty experience lately, even more since last September. Even small lines have become crowded, it feels like its rush hour all the time.

There is definitely a Paris metro driver recruitment issue as frequency has become lower. Outsider will tell you that 4 minutes waiting for a train is good, but considering most trains are only 75m long, they fill up very fastly, therefore you need higher frequency if you want them to not get jammed.
The other problem is that in order to make the city inaccessible for cars, they clogged all surfaces traffic, including bus, taxis, delivery trucks, professional vans, motorbikes, bikes, etc. This has deteriorated trafic flows and increased the number of metro users in the same time, leading to a harder experience to move around the city. Rather than clogging surfaces traffic the way they did, they should have instead totally banned private cars from the center and make it so other trafic could flows smoothly.
Can't wait to try using this one day.
Coming from a local, line 13 is my least favorite line. I will usually prefer taking busses to taking this usually packed, loud, humid, and dirty train line between my school and Montparnasse.

The entity exploiting the network isn't the one financing its construction... RATP pays employees, it doesn't pay extensions, that's public money.
The closed off catacombs are actually pretty interesting, but you better go with someone that knows the place don't try it on your own (you probably won't even find an entrance tbh).

Just outside of Paris, in Clamart, such a Limestone Mine collapsed in 1961. A Neighbourhood collapsed into the Tunnels, killing 21 People.
I’d recommend cycling everywhere. There has been a lot of effort to improve cycle paths throughout the city. I’d add a few complaints such as metro entrances without ticket machines, unclear signage and a couple of hub stations that are unwieldy.

Where I live, by car, it takes me 15-30 mins to get to work depending on how much traffic there is. I live in the capital, mind you.
By public transport, it takes me anywhere from 1h30 to 2h depending on traffic as well.
Why? Because, for some reason, whoever planned the public transportations for the outskirts thought it was a brilliant idea to make those passengers circle half the city, as if enjoying the _same_ urban landscape for over an hour every day would brighten their day.
Paris having plenty of lines just encourages people to actually use public transports. The fact that I save between 2 and 3 hours of my day just by taking my car to work makes the expenses on fuel and monthly maintenance worth it. Besides, imagine what a person can do with those *extra 40-60 hours every month* on a side hustle. It's like I'd have the part-time job of commuting. No thanks.

The random German Intercity Express trIan near the end really threw me off.
We have the special forces training in the catacombs every once in a while but that's also to make sure it does not get populated because the place is huge, the place has many urban legends, everybody as heard stuff about it like satanic parties and stuff like that. There are some places that can be very dangerous as he says you can die falling in very small and deep pit and nobody will find you.
When I worked in Paris my employer had to pay half of my navigo pass since I lived 40min away. Not sure if it's still the case now.

as a former person who used to live in paris for a while, i can tell you that i used to take the metro a LOT. I was a commuter, so I know a lot about it. I used to get on and off the trains and go through the stations i even had a carte orange, which insiders will know means i really was a regular user. So i know what I'm talking about.

187 million euros per km is not bad. Ontario line in Toronto Canada is set to cost $1 billion Canadian dollars per km, and that’s before it even started. In with local budget overruns there is no way it would be cheaper, but likely more expensive
You should look into the story of the lady who ended up under the rer b and survived. Her hand got stuck in the door and she slipped underneath. Shes absolutely traumatized but it's an interesting story I guess

6:10 and in summer, because of the tires and brake system, it's an undergound hoven. No A/C, almost no wind/air.
Paris has an amazing public transport infrastructure. I live here and don't need a car because I can get to anywhere else in the city in less than an hour for under two euro. For those few areas that are a little further from the nearest metro stop, they also have a fantastic network of bike lanes, with bikeshare points on every other street. I've never been in a city with a better setup.
For me the worst part of using Paris metro system as a tourist is lack of information online about ticket variants, costs etc. Researching this was a nightmare, information on official transport site sucks (I had to use a private blog that some good Samaritan wrote, I mean really?), and I wasn't able to check how pricey it will be for me to go from station A to B to evaluate if one week ticket will be a good idea or not. The ticket zoning in Paris is also weird af, whose idea was that?
reason why you talk to the ticket vendor who guard the gates they will give you the best options according to your need

Besides the Grand Paris Express, the absolute priority should be the automation of all the lines with drivers. So when there's a strike, parisians could still use the transports !

Most delays in Paris are due to users, not really mechanical or technical problems. Anytime a person leaves a bag, or crosses the rail or whatever, it stops the whole line and delays everything. That being said, technical problems have become more frequent due to the aging systems.
The metro as mentioned has a lot of stairs and is not very friendly for handicapped people and families with babies and strollers.
We used to rave down there in the 90 :)
Went to Paris and my biggest thing was go to catacombs but it was packed and never was able to go inside

The Metro in general is great, the main issue is crowd, especially in RER. But, well, I don't think there is any solutions to that in a 12 millions inhabitant city.
I'm from Paris and no, line 11 isn't a pain to ride in, and I don't want them to change the trains
The footage at 11 minutes is definitely not a Parisian train nor line B 😅 otherwise its a nice video. I lived all my life in Paris but traveled to many other places, I have to admit Paris network is really really huge and crazy, just a pity it is a bit run down in some parts.
