Spring Mood In Iceland - You Don't Find This Elsewhere

  • This unusual update covers a few small small issues that I found hard to fit with my regular volcano updates but I had a great time making it. I hope you will like huh.is and if you liked the story about the viking clap, or Thunder Clap as it's often called, it's plenty to find on UA-cam, or how this developed from a little idea into a mass movement that took the football mode into a whole new level.
As for the guy who ruined the viking clap, it's actually a sketch from an annual satire TV show, broadcaster shortly before midnight on December 31st and 80% of the nation is watching. The sketch author in Jonesed Gnarr, the comedian that became the Mayor of Reykjavik from 2010-2014. Jón Gnarr is currently a candidate for the office of President of Iceland for the presidential elections in June 2024 and ranks number 3 according to polls.

I have fond memories, as a Welshman, of Euro 2016 - for our own boys’ performance and also for Iceland beating England!
A small note on Iceland’s performance: you mentioned they finished 8th but that doesn’t quite do them justice. They had a tough draw in the quarter-finals (last 8) and were defeated by host nation France, but the teams that do not qualify for the last 4 are not further ranked - thus Iceland was no more 8th than it was 5th.
Great video, beautiful drone shots and much respect for the Icelandic any-weather football fans!

I enjoyed the Football (soccer) game played in the snow. The money going into youth sports will pay off. Back in the day when I was a kid our local NHL team the Detroit Red Wings put a lot of its resources it won winning championships into local youth teams. Our current Captain is from the first generation of that era. It’s hard to watch a game without hearing about a local player on the opposing team. Our former captain and all around legend Steve Yzerman didn’t trade durning the deadline because of the amount of talent in our farm system teams in smaller cities in lesser leagues. Some would be playing in the professional league in any other team. Investing local talent is the way to go, btw that Viking Chant is on par with the Māori chant in terms of being awesome & intimidating.
Thanks for sharing this interesting and possibly the most Icelandic thing I’ve ever heard of. Heated pitches not all indoors but using the geothermal heat to keep the fields useable all year. Such an extreme country climate wise, geologically & geographically. Yet it’s a beautiful place naturally of course but also it’s city planning the efforts to reforest & use it’s natural resources in a organic and technologically sustainable way. Not to mention for people like me with an interest in volcanology it’s
an absolutely unique spot on the planet. A hot spot under a mid ocean ridge.
I like cultural comparisons because I’m discovering so much about Iceland since the 2011 & 2021 - 24 eruptions. I’m going to drop some local references that only tangentially have anything to do with the subject.
In US college football which is huge the Michigan vs Ohio State game is the last of the season as the two teams are legendary rivals. It also often determines playoff position who plays for the championship and who plays in a second tier playoff game. It’s not quite as dedicated as Iceland where heated fields are needed just to play. However 110,000 fans will brave the late November Great Lakes gales if the game is played in Michigan that usually includes snow squalls.
The NFL Buffalo, NY Bills are one of the few teams left to play in an outdoor stadium. They are also located to get massive lake effect storms during the first cold blast. The past two seasons games had to be moved or postponed due to storms dropping 6-10 feet of snow. Buffalo is a small city by large American city standards but it’s held onto its team with developers wanting to move US Football into Canada and Toronto being two hours away. Toronto doesn’t get 6 feet of snow in a day and 10 over a 3 day storm. Buffalo is just in the right place and football season gets into playoff mode as mother nature rolls the dice on when the first storm rolls though. If it’s early then no big deal if it’s not here until Christmas we get a white hurricane. Though not all of us are downwind of the lakes fortunately. Some of us are in the sweet zone far enough downwind that only a few inches fall. Those same “warm” unfrozen waters of the lakes creating blizzards downwind keep that -20 below f or about -30 below c to the west and south of the lakes. 0 degrees f is cold or -17 c but I pity Chicago and Minneapolis which get -20f or -30f with wind howling out of the Canadian Prairie uninstructed.
Though on a different note we had a record warm winter that’s off the charts. Even the mountains of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan which avarage 200+ inches or 500cm got half that and it melted in a month. The lakes are so large they act like inland seas and make their own weather. A lack of cold weather except one extreme burst had about two weeks of good winter weather before the season collapsed.
Weather is getting more extreme we didn’t get a major Arctic outbreak & mid-latitude cyclone until January. The later winter hits the harder it does. Winds on the open water of 70+ mph & 36 ft waves on Lake Huron. Neil DeGrass Tyson has a pod cast on how this years flip from winter La Niña to summer El Niño this year broke every single long term weather forecast prediction model there is.
The area about the size of Tennessee has a population of 250,000 a big city is 20,000 with 60,000 being a metropolitan area. Winter sports keep the economy alive after excessive logging and mining in the early 20th century led to boom and bust. The university towns are doing fine but the small rural communities have been devastated economically. Thankfully federal funds for small businesses have been made available but it’s a little late for the layoffs of employees.
It’s a shame that the mining and timber companies didn’t leave more nature behind and invest more in the cities. It’s one of the most beautiful regions of the US certainly the most remote a 12 hour drive from Detroit or Chicago to the northern tip. However that’s not such a bad thing having the wilderness recover and the areas too rugged to be logged mostly turned into parks. While over 50% of the state is forested after 90 years of restoration & preservation.
I find it cool that despite the hard times when the mines were run dry during WW2 & farming proved impossible with the rocky acidic soil in most places the Scandinavian population stuck it out and became Yoopers. A reference to the heavy accent some in rural communities still carry. I think I mentioned before that Washington Island on Lake Michigan has the largest Icelandic settlement in America. A local spent his life and a lot of local trees to build a copy of a 10th century Norwegian Church.
The future looks brighter for the region there’s more nickel than Russia or Canada in the region as well as copper, uranium & Gold. Good luck getting uranium mining going or open pit gold mining that uses arsenic next to 20% of the world’s fresh water. Though establishing US and western supply chains for better production if done responsibly is a good thing. The state level environmental watchdog organization has done well managing mining in sensitive areas. The state’s technological university is located in the region and has leveraged its expertise and has a fast growing technology sector. If Michigan’s Upper Peninsula becomes a part of a high tech supply chain once again as it was until the late 20th century. There is well educated local talent has already begun building the base for a high tech economy in parts of the UP.
Some really great innovative ideas have been developed from regional developments & scaled to fit the local needs & economy. The use of abandoned mines as pump storage facilities using excess grid capacity at night to pump water up a mine and during the day reversing the flow through turbines to provide more electricity a need and in a clean environmentally sustainable way.
    of.

Enjoyed your video as always, and your sense of humor. When I was there back in the 1960s, they told about taking visiting soccer, sports teams on pony treks. Thought of that when I saw the horses. After the pony rides the visiting players were too sore to compete in top form. Do they still do that or have visiting teams learned???? All's fair in love & sports!! Greetings from Ohio.❤

Love the town...a former Winterpegger here! Too bad the Icelanders that settled, couldn't find a way to create geothermal hot pools! But the lake is wonderful in Summer! One of Gylfi's videos eluded to how Gimli was established by fleeing Icelanders from the massive volcano eruption around 1890 ish.(Too early in the AM for me to remember the exact date) Not sure how old you are, but I remember Gimli Goose and the Gimli glider!

Go heavy on the wicked humor w Shawn. His origional following found much discovery in the excitment he put online. He and I are from the same lightly populated area and inevitably limited mono culture. His style imo is flat and didactic. His listeners qould enjoy new experiences badly. American wests 'inner mountian region' humor joke style usually 'pokes fun' at someones cost. But sofisticated sarcasm is nonexistant. Delights me now long lived in the UK. Where indirect taking the 'mick out' is a refined art!
