I had Bartow as a professor a few years ago for history. Growing up it was always my least favorite subject, but he made it so engaging and it ended up being one of my favorite classes I took in undergrad. Great to see him on here now
@Ryan G It was a great experience. I had him in the spring of 2019. The class was called "Making America Modern" and covered from the civil war up until the 2000's. I still remember on the first day, sitting in the front row and seeing Bart setting up the computer for class and thinking "there's no way this young guy is our professor." As class is getting started, the speakers in the room begin to play what sounded like something my great grandparents would've listened to. Sure enough, the moment the song is over, the clock finishes turning, and he makes his introduction and talks about how it was one of the most popular songs towards the end of the civil war. From that moment forward, every class would begin with him perfectly timing up a song from the time period we were studying to where it would end the SECOND class was supposed to start. He explained how it would help us get grounded for the class and to just come in, sit down, close your eyes, and pretend you are in that time period. He would sometimes give us things to think about that were relevant for that period as the music was playing and it was a really fun thought experiment and relaxing way to start class! At some point he told us about how he used to DJ, and it was fun to see both his passion for that and experience music that otherwise would be lost in history as far as I was concerned. Looking back I think it was the only class I have taken where I actually stayed in the front the whole semester just because of how engaged he kept us. We would sometimes watch short documentaries, and he even made it a point to bring in his vietnam vet father (although I don't remember if he was able to for our group) to help us see a REALISTIC view of history and not just the clean version the average book wanted us to see. As I am writing this I am looking back at my emails with Bart and remembering a conversation in person and over email about Hetch Hetchy Valley and the conservation movement (we talked about it in class and I had purchased a hat he wanted to see in support of restoring the valley). He would always tell us the university will PAY for anyone to have lunch with him through a "take your professor to lunch" program that I told myself I would do all semester and never did. Free lunch with an awesome guy, don't know why I never took time to do it. I am finally graduating this spring, and I'm going to see if it is too late or not to do so, but I'd really like to do that.

I worked for coke back in the late ninety's and part of your new hire was learning the history of coca-cola. Interesting to this day the concentrate used to make coke is made in peru and still uses the coca leaf. But all the cocaine is extracted and sold to for pharma use. Its all very highly controlled by the dea.
It was harder for me to stop drinking coke than alcohol. All my stomach issues and pain in my knees went away. I wish they would talk about the health issues it causes.
Wow thanks for sharing man. I could assume the stomach issues but the joint pain? Is that specific to Coca-Cola? Or do you suppose that is just any high fructose corn syrup, or processed sugar?
There are two very different kinds of coca leaves grown in South America. There's small leaved coca which people chew and has pretty low levels of cocaine and there's large leafed coca which they use for cocaine production. I've seen both while travelling in Bolivia. I almost made some original formula coke by adding some coca leaves to a 20 oz of coke.
You sound like a meathead who struggled to understand the content. The guy isnt making a story up, hes telling about his research, which is what pretty much what every guest does who Joe has on who isnt a personal friend.
Somewhere in Peru or Columbia, someone’s Grandmother is making real CocaCola, bringing it to special occasions and healing her closest friends of all their digestive issues. Id buy a CocaCola Serving Tray with that scene painted in their trademark wholesome 50s soda fountain pin-up style. Medicine woman. There should be coca plants in the background.
A American friend of mine living as an expat on a beach in Mexico about fifteen years ago was really into this question of what happens to the coca leaves for Coca Cola. We found out all about the extraction and the laws to bring the leaves in and how the extracted cocaine was used for legal medicine. BUT the thing I was never able to find at the time was about the balance of how much Coke was manufactured and how much cocaine-derived medicine was manufactured? Did the demand for the medicines just increase in lockstep over the years and decades with the increasing popularity of Coke, or was there an excess? Or did demand for the medicinces always outstrip the supply no matter how much Coke was made?
What's hilarious about this story is that the exact opposite happened when Four Loko first came out 😂 It used to have caffeine in it but then people started dying from heart attacks because they were drinking too many of them at the same time and they had to take out the caffeine. Today, they are sold without caffeine.
They didn't just have caffeine, it was a "blend" of several energy ingredients. Doesn't make sense that the original formula was banned when everyone can still go to any bar and order a vodka and red bull, same thing.

@diane Taylor the man never said anything about .003 of a gram in Coca-Cola so quit trying to confuse your generation he said a small amount which could be any small amount that we have no idea since it's a Coca-Cola secret like I said quit confusing your generation they're already screwed up enough

Another fun fact: John Pimberton was a confederate soldier during the civil war, and became addicted to morphine during his time in battle. He originally created Coca Cola, to wean himself off of morphine.
Wrong
@Mike H then you get addicted
@@grapentine739 addiction is for the weak
Genghis was a super power a very long time ago, I don’t think he got there from being foolish.
Addiction is embarrassing and pointless. The only gain you get is a life long struggle with being who you were before you became addicted to opiates.
It’s all new to me. Not the cocaine in Coca-Cola, but all the details. Especially growing coca in Hawaii. Pretty darn cool. Now I think I’ll finally download Spotify. Never really thought this day would come :(
Where is full episode ???????????

I worked for a chemical company that supplied all the chemicals that went into the drinks and its crazy the amount of different chemicals go into a drink

The very energetic LISTEN TO FULL EPISODES outro hits differently after a discussion of cocaine
I’ve been reading food labels since the 70’s making shopping a solitary experience because it drives everyone else crazy but Coke has remained mysterious
I could imagine your folks going crazy about it. To each their own, I guess. But your behaviour doesn't matter if the producers lie about their product. And use bribes and blackmail to get away with it. Let's just say I don't trust the system as much as you do.
He sounds so much like Ben from “The Tim Dillon Show” that for a minute I thought Ben had been invited on to confront Joe about the rumors of him and his wife.

Coca is a great medicinal plant - good for digestion and helps with altitude sickness.
Yeah that and it can get you high right? ;) I saw someone chew those leaves, got very talkative and started shaking at the end. Medicinal plant haha. I love americans every plant that can get you high is apparently medicinal. Legalize that shit! xD
@@DanielAnderssson that sounds like a psychosomatic thing dude.
First of all, coca leaves are not supposed to be eaten, just chewed.
But if you eat them you will not get neither talkative nor shaky, it will just give you a bellyache.
I'm not even trying to defend coca leaves, they smell like shit.
@@AlanGarciaC.1093 Yeah sorry I meant to say chew
I've had coca Tea and i ate the leaves after. Not any stomach ache what so ever, don't know what you're talking about.

I worked for coke back in the late ninety's and part of your new hire was learning the history of coca-cola. Interesting to this day the concentrate used to make coke is made in peru and still uses the coca leaf. But all the cocaine is extracted and sold to for pharma use. Its all very highly controlled by the dea.
my dad drank it all the time he said he lived two lifetimes 😂
It was harder for me to stop drinking coke than alcohol. All my stomach issues and pain in my knees went away. I wish they would talk about the health issues it causes.
Wow thanks for sharing man. I could assume the stomach issues but the joint pain? Is that specific to Coca-Cola? Or do you suppose that is just any high fructose corn syrup, or processed sugar?
@@tommmmo1981 AMEN! Dr. Berg is the BEST. Imma eat some grassfed butter right now, LOL
Same sort of thing with me, I'm 22 and I've just given up alcohol a couple months ago. Thought about giving up coke but might just moderate it.
Binge watching when I should be sleeping right now.
Citizen coke is one of the most informative books I’ve read in a long time.
Joe Rogan: “That’s good and all, but have you tried DMT and Coke?”
Jamie, let's put that on, !
Moose Meat
DMT belongs in 7up
agreed! 10000% right!
Original coke formula didn't have corn syrup. Get some Mexican Coke for better quality coke.

The guy wrote a whole book on coca-cola’s history.. Of course he’s interested in sharing it :)
Yeah you couldn’t be more wrong
What medicines use the coco leaf?
@@slimbogoody208 Good question but I would think whatever medicines that are still cocaine-based.
