01:08 That moment tells us so much about Julie Andrews. I have to say that The Godfather may have the classic status but I honestly feel Bob Fosse's direction of "Cabaret" was genius and filled with much originality and style and pizazz. I think it is one of the best wins the Oscars have ever selected.
it's a matter of box office. As hard as it may be to believe today, Godfather did NOT fare well w critics or box office when first released. Also, it's extremely rare for a musical to win anything @Oscars so kudos to Fosse for pulling off such a coup. He was an awesome talent in many ways. Personally, I voted for Godfather. Would do the same today.
@@esquibelle Both points here about The Godfather’s critical and box office success upon release are just blatantly and factually incorrect. He pushed it out even further with all that jazz, which is probably - outside of Von trier’s dancer in the dark - the darkest film musical ever
It was great that both Cabaret and The Godfather both were highly honoured that year. They’re two of my favourite films. RIP Bob. You were taken too soon.

Bob Fosse owed much of his success to Gwen Verdon. Her contributions to many of his projects are now well known. Gwen died in 2000 and Fosse in 1987. They were married from 1960 to 1987. His extramarital affairs put a strain on their marriage, and by 1971, Verdon and Fosse were separated, but never divorced.
That miniseries _Fosse/Verdon_ (2019) was history revisionism and exaggerated her contributions, reimagining her as the superwoman behind the man. After its release, several of their former colleagues came forward and refuted this.
Meanwhile I’m just elated that Yan Troell was recognized for his brilliant The Emigrants (and her overlooked sister The New Land!). People mostly remember Ingmar from Sweden for a good reason yes but Yan also did such a magnificent job directing the movie. What a brilliant year for film.
Idk what is more shocking, Cabaret winning over Godfather or Kramer vs. Kramer winning over Apocalypse Now.... it Deer Hunter hadn’t come out the year before in 1978, Coppola, as we all know, would’ve won. Academy just preferred musicals over gangster films back then. Today, Coppola would’ve easily gotten the Oscar. Still sad to see Fosse win though...

The first of three head-to-head battles between Fosse and Coppola for Best Director: 1. Cabaret/Godfather (1973); 2. Lenny/Godfather Part II (1975); 3. All That Jazz/Apocalypse Now (1980)
I must tell you i LOVE your headshot! You're so reminiscent of the 40s, absolutely one of my favorite periods in art! How fabulous to have seen Cabaret (the film) several times. Don't you agree it only becomes better the second time around? He was so driven, so humble, and SO BRILLIANT. His work was profoundly sensual yet never garish. Every move expressed a thought that drove the story forward. A suggestion: 'My Sister Eileen' w/Fosse, Janet Leigh, Jack Lemmon & Betty Garrett from 1955. (more)

I'd hate to have to pick between Coppola and Fosse that year.
You only understand if you've seen both movies.
Cabaret has great directing.
The Godfather still won Best Picture
The Sound of Music and Cabaret. Two films our nation's young people will never choose to see or understand in this day and age.... And THAT explains everything about the United States of America at this time in our nation's history. March 1, 2024.
Bob Fosse is amazing!! :D
P.S. Post Julie Andrews' win, please!
First comment!!! Thank you AMPAS for posting this, please post more old stuff, Clark Gable winning his Oscar, or Greer Garson's long speech. Oscar moments from the 30`s 40`s and 50`s please.
Benjamin Tristan Zuniga Santander Gable’s Oscar speech was about as long as Joe Pesci’s
Watch out his moves as he steps on stage, his slim figure and his posture! A real dancer, wonderful choreographer. Funny he got an award as director.
i wish i could have met Bob Fosse.
The first of three head-to-head battles between Fosse and Coppola for Best Director: 1. Cabaret/Godfather (1973); 2. Lenny/Godfather Part II (1975); 3. All That Jazz/Apocalypse Now (1980)
Icon,he was the inspiration four Michael jackson
Holy shit! He sorta looks like Roy Scheider!
Oh well, at least Coppola got back at Fosse just two years later when The Godfather Part II won Best Director over Lenny.
He was a giant.
(more)
That was a tough match godfather and cabaret ,i cannot choose which is better they are the best in their own might
Cabaret has always been my favourite film, didn’t know he was up against such megaliths.
@ewanmcfadyen Godfather such a basic film though. Did you see Cabaret. Amazing directon and looks so modern compared to most movies of that era.
Godfather basic. Ok then
2:50 'A dear friend of mine by the name of Gwen Verdon.'
Ermmm, you mean your wife?
They had separated by 1973
