I like the DC to off-board inverter option that GM is going over using the vehicle inverter. It allows the equipment to be right-sized for the home, whereas vehicle inverters are almost always be limited to 9-11kW output (or lower). Vehicle cooling systems would have to run if using onboard, whereas off-board systems could be bigger and therefore have options to cool passively.
the vehicle Inverter power is 19.2kW, you now have two inverters instead of one. You need to pay for it and it is also half the power.
@@WRW87 sure, that $100,000 truck does. What about an Equinox EV, a Nissan Leaf, or any other sensible commuter vehicle? DC draw could work on almost any EV with CCS/NACS.
@@LCCB you are right, for example all Volkswagen Meb cars have the DC out capability just have to turned on by a software update.
The other advantage of this System that two out of three of that White boxes you already need if you have a solar System installed. In my house we have Solar battery Storage and we had to install the inverter and the switching panel with the grid disconnect. In our case the only extra component would be the evse
11kw is plenty for most household use. You would also have a home battery of some sort which should have at least another 7kw which together would cope just fine with sudden household usage.
Even a lower end car with a 3.66hw inverter in the car. that should be fine if its being supplemented by a single home battery. The car is there for capacity and some extra output, not the entire output.
This was an excellent presentation. My only concern is this is Gen 1 and everyone is still learning. This channel is always the leader in bringing us the information we love to hear. Thank you for your dedication.

The concept makes total sense, particularly if you have a solar array, but until the execution improves AND the cost comes down for the avg person, using your EV as a backup for home power remains a pipe dream. I installed a solar array with mini battery system just to see how it could all work and found out a few years ago it was not yet ready for prime time. It's better today but pricey. You would need to have a frequency of power outage pretty high to recoup the cost of installing this system AND having a vehicle with a large enough battery pack to allow you to have more than a few hours of backup (and to have backup for the ENTIRE house and not just a limited sub-panel).
I have solar with battery that is available for backup and for consumption (from Enphase). Consumption mode is active when there are no storm warnings, so I use stored power to supplement solar production and avoid purchasing from the grid as much as possible. That means we choose to EV charge and run the dryer midday when possible, and have the battery at 100% by sundown.
The cable from the Silverado looks a bit slim to handle household level of power. Peak power draw may pull 100A +-
@@JohnDoe-xr8dz the math says differently: to approximate, 10,000 Watts / 800 Volts = 12.5 Amperes. High voltage DC is great on that front.
For this to work it needs to be universal and vendor-agnostic. I will always own cars from different manufactures

So what every one that wants to plug in for that home would always have to own a GM vehicle. not a good option.. Oh and 30+ second to transfer,, terrible.
You don't want this inferior system. Power transfer in an outage should be sub-second. This solution is actually pathetic.

@@punksjutgbdnah. I just want a cheap option that allows me to plug a generator chord from the EV to a generator panel. If I have to manually switch it, no big deal. I’m not hosting a critical data center or hospital or anything.
How does something like this work with a Tesla Solar + Powerwall system which is what I have to supplement the 2 battery backup?

Definitely an edge use case. Living in VA and PA all of my life, probably had 3 or 4 times were we lost power for more than 8 hrs, that's over 40 years. Just use the outlets in the car to power what you need to power(freezer, fridge, internet, etc... )
Will be more useful in areas with hurricanes and snow storms where you can lose power for days.

That break before make blackout window is a major detractor for backup power. Other solutions allow you to retain power without interruption so your computers, networking gear, appliances with clocks, etc don't experience a power cut. Even a small AC coupled battery to keep things on in the switch-over would be a much better experience.
I could see it having a power cut to wake up the truck. And turn everything on. But if you have a home battery ready to go like in this case not sure why there was a power cut at all.
Eh I’m not too concerned about it. I’ll continue to have a UPS for my computing gear.
You can, of course, install a small home battery. And I probably will when I get bidirectional charging (I'm still holding out for true V2G or at least always accessible V2H). Your car may not be at home right when the power goes out. Having a small battery to tide you over and keep everything running as the car hooks in makes sense. (the problem of course is that sometimes you don't realize the power is out until your battery dies lol).
Anyway, it's one of the reasons I'm curious what the home charging manufacturers come out with vs the auto manufacturers. Enphase says their system will talk to solar and the vehicle and the home and make it all work seamlessly through their central system. We'll see.

You should have a UPS on your PC and network equipment anyway. A decent one is less than $200. If you can afford this vehicle and this system, you can afford a couple of those.
Love the concept. Was 100% on board when talked about for Ford . Then the cost was way more than thought ( and SunRun screwed up my solar options ) . I am not an full on EV person but believe it has a place . 100% against power company knowing if/and what power I have as available to them ( as back up ) !!!
Once GM switches to the NACS charging connection next year what do I have to repurchase?
A new cable with the NACS connector. Nothing else.

@@privettoli no. Enphase said this for their future bidirectional charger. GM's solution should be capable of the same.
For a personal residential use in the rare outage, just get an interlock based generator inlet for fairly cheap then you can plug the 240v truck output directly in OR roll your gas generator up and run away. Powers the whole panel, just be smart about your loads. Soooooo much less cost and complexity.
I have Cybertruck Powershare installed and working. A single 3V Gateway and Universal Connector is all that is required to supply 11.5 kwh. There is no need for a small battery to wake-up the truck. There is a communications wire between the gateway and wall connector to wake up the truck and supply power in a grid outage.
I have heard the cost is $1200 for the gateway and $600 for the Universal Wall Connector. But of course you and I paid $20k for it with the Foundation Series.
When are you getting your Powershare installed at your Dad's house or yours?
the Silverado EV has a 19.2kW internal inverter and doble the battery capacity. So they could easily be using it with similar approach and more power. I don't understand the extra Inverter.
@@WRW87As GM’s CRO said, onboard equipment becomes the responsibility of the car service center to certify and maintain. Tesla can do that because they own their own service centers. GM has to rely on a network of 3rd parties to do sales and servicing. Demanding new skills from their service technicians will not go down well, especially since the service centers won’t see much return for that cost of training / new hires.

@@markmuir7338 True point the bidirectional inverters are not that much more complicated than a standard inverter. remember not too long ago when people were convinced the model 3 had a bidirectional inverter if it wasn't for a hand full of diodes? So this is something a technician would deal with anyway, its worse in this situation as you now have 2 parties/departments talking to each other if there is a fault.
@@Sparky400 When I tested it the truck was not in deep sleep. It was about 0.5 seconds to switch. When the grid power is restored you get a notification that Powershare will turn off in 5 minutes. Exactly 5 minutes later there was another 0.5 second switch back to grid power.
This kind of home battery + EV system is exactly what I want! I just hope the price can come down a little.

Backup power and solar panels are both being considered for the house.
GM’s approach makes sense because it allows the system to be modular, sized to the customer and configured to meet local code. The downside is that installation labor cost will be higher due to the greater number of interconnections.
The Tesla Cybertruck with onboard inverter is apt to be too little or more capacity than needed for quite a few applications. The Tesla advantage is that cost will be spread across all purchasers and possibly provide a lower cost of installation for customers who want to use the backup option.
We need a System here , for sure!

The changeover was 36 seconds, that was clearly a struggle, you think they are going to cope with using the onboard charger? They should though but none of this is in house.

Perfect integration is KEY for these. Everyone will promise integration. Anyone can do a slick demo.
Actual, real-life, day-to-day integration that is mindlessly simple is the ONLY way to make a system like this worth the money.
My current system is a hodge-podge. It does the job, but requires handholding from me all the time to make sure it is doing what it is supposed to do.
Hoping GM understands that when they say 'integrated' in 2024 - the consumer assumes it will be intuitive and easy.
Agreed. Even though Kyle praises Tesla’s app, it leaves plenty of money on the table. Thankfully it’s been reverse-engineered, so you can automate the hand-holding. My Powerwalls now change their backup reserve automatically to allow me to be self-powered from solar, but switch to charging from the grid at night if there wasn’t enough left in the Powerwalls to run the house the next day. Similarly for charging the EVs from excess solar, or from grid at night if they get too low.
Will those batteries be storing only energy from the vehicles or can they also store energy from solar panels?
If so which solar systems will be compatible with the GM system?
Also, what about generator support and integration? Can you integrate a natural gas whole house generator into the system? What happens if you have bad weather during a blackout for several days that disallows you from generator energy from solar and replenishing your battery banks and ev?

Any way to make it instant like when my Tesla Powerwall 2 with Gateway 2 takes over in an outage? My computer doesn't even shut down :D I'm curious if the Tesla V2G system is instant like the Powerwall systems?

Takes a bit to switch from off-gird to Silverado power, but considering the last leg of this has to communicate over CCS, it makes sense.

I’d like to see an all in one inverter and EVSE with the grid ATS as an option on a standard panel board from the majors. This means for green field builds, you spec the panel board to have the ATS and then only install one all in one inverter to handle batteries, solar, and EV charging. Hopefully someone is thinking of this down the line…😊
I am waiting (as patiently as I can) for the enphase bidirectional charging system so that it will integrate seamlessly with my enphase solar system.

God I'm hoping so hard that they really nailed this product, but I worry a bit that it's going to be half steps. There's a higher chance that it won't have this sort of "only in an emergency" limitation and that it may eventually get connected to the grid, but I do worry which vehicles it will eventually end up actually supporting. Haven't heard anything from them or wallbox (which kia reaffirmed as their partner with Ev9 bidirectional charging news) lately.

I love an energy and vehicle channel. I think this product misses too much on a checkbox list to be any good. Honestly just connect a generator plug to your dedicated circuits and to the back of the truck in the box and away you go.
This is close to something I'm wondering about.
A lot of companies offer these all-in-one hybrid inverters. They have solar panels (multiple strings, depending on the size). They have battery or batteries (possibly multiple independent ones, depending on the size). They can charge the battery from the solar or discharge it to power the loads. They have the AC side, which they can output into or take from and charge the battery. They often have an emergency mode when the grid is down, with switchover under 1s. A lot of the power parts of the thing is shared / balanced between the inputs/outputs.
So extending this by connecting one of the battery in/outputs to the EV battery through CCS (both charging and discharging) is just adding the communication parts, but the rest is already there. The added cost to such installation should not be high, compared to having just the „basic“ version of such inverter. It would also provide some efficiency benefit (eg. not going DC->AC->DC when charging from solar, but directly DC->DC, just voltage change) and would allow going down with the charging power below 6A (this is a slight problem here in Europe, as we run 3-phase charging and that means we can't go below ~4kW even if the solars are giving less).
For that reason, I think the future is having it integrated in the inverter (with the wallbox being just a „satelite“ so it's possible to install further away from the inverter) and the car only allowing to discharge the DC.
And yes, I do think it makes sense to have some stationary battery too ‒ faster switchover (no need to negotiate with the car), works when the car is not there, etc.
Stationary battery storage is usually 48V.
@@tschuuuls486Not around here. I mean, if you want, you can build something with 48V from components.
But, if you order a "consumer grade" / home PV system around here, what they usually deliver is a Chinese all in one inverter with Chinese high-voltage battery storage.
Depending on the number of modules, it's some 300-1000V on the battery, with capacities from 8kWh upwards, and charge/discharge powers in order of multiple kW.
There are some startups experimenting with re-using old car battery packs (crashed, high degradation, etc; but as a whole pack, not taken apart to cells) by connecting them as batteries to these inverters. They just add a translation electronics board to pretend it's a car to the battery pack ‒ but the power lines are connected directly.
31:34 big fan. The square footprint of the ESS coming out 24/30 inches out from the wall is less than optimal. Overall I like it.
Can’t wait to see Enphase’s version that is more vehicle agnostic.
There’s videos out on the Enphase offering. They are targeting ISO V2H/V2G right out of the gate, with DC vehicle charging, so it can be compatible with NACS, and changeover if the grid goes down is milliseconds. It’s a whole generation ahead of the auto-makers offerings.
Excited about the new home power channel!!!! I really want to see comparisons between the ford, Tesla, and GM systems. Number one the total all in price without buying extra home battery storage. If I have a huge vehicle battery I shouldn’t have to buy storage. That should be an option later. Also we need to see the comparison nerdy stuff you kinda got into how disjointed the GM system is with 4 separate units currently vs teslas integrated solutions. I think fords solution falls in the middle currently but I have no direct knowledge of any of these systems only from here and state of charge
Great to see this EV to home technology evolving and you did a great job of the overview and talking to the industry expert. Hugely beneficial to me as I want this for my home. I see power outages coming more often for us mountain homeowners because of wind and wildfire threat.
I will wait for a gen 2 system and hopefully 2026 is when I can purchase the system and my EV. Earlier would be great.
In the uk, home battery charging when price is low with or without solar is readily available.
With Solar (since 2000) & power walls (2) installed I currently charge an EV & use battery power 5pm-9 pm daily. The next step is to get power available from my Rivian to help during the high need periods for the bi-directional power.
Does the Silverado EV WT support this?
A fun experiment that would be much cheaper and simpler is to do time-of-use with two cables and using timers so that the truck would charge via the J1772 cable when power from the grid is cheap, and the second cable is connected from the truck using Nema 14-50 to a generator inlet with xfer switch on your house when electricity is expensive. This would not require any special, expensive hardware and give you much of the same capabilities.
Nice! Glad to see GM moving into this space with their EVs. What I'd like to know is why GM has deleted its J3400 adapter (part #85090442) in its supply store. Has Tesla pulled the rug out from under GM's transition with those Supercharger firings?
excited on this area. It would be nice to finally have DC to DC like solar directly charging/connected to batteries. it is also nice for EVs to dump its energy during high electricity rates to offset the cost of an EV. EVs also have better battery capacity vs price ratio vs like a Powerwall.

All I need from my EV is a 120/240 AC output and I can do everything else myself. I already run my house on battery backed solar and I already charge the EV with that same solar. Just need the EV output to complete the circle. 2kW would be enough.

Another good video. As I've mentioned in other videos, I used to be a GM fanboi. I owned a '65 Corvair, '95 Jimmy, '02 Vue, '06 Avalanche, and a '16 Malibu hybrid. I noted the quality of GM vehicles diminishing over time as they try to cut costs. (For example, my '06 Avalanche deleted the light in the passenger footwell to remove $50 from the cost.) I wonder about the long-term quality of the GM Ultium products. I applaud Mary Barra for her focus, but will reserve judgement until i see the product in action.
Wow! That's a so much more complex and expensive than the Cybertruck Powershare system for $2500 + installation for 11.5 kW home backup.

? You already can. The Ford has been used for exactly this purpose on this channel before and the Silverado can do the same. That doesn't have anything to do with V2H like they're talking about here though

Without being able to do energy arbitrage, it’s really quite boring. How many power outages do you have to have to make a $10,000 and 35 second response time backup system make sense? Are there any buyers for this use case?

I have 20kW of PV and inverters with 36kWh of LFP. It powers my 450m2 house and 2 EVs. If we have a storm my 85kWh BYD Seal connects it's 3.6kW AC V2L to my solar system's grid connection (I am off-grid with no meter) I tend to use it when the house is shut down for the night and what I use can be charged back in an hour the next via my 7kW wall charger - videos on my channel.

I have used start chargers in china since 2018!
At about 20 minutes in, Kyle asks if the system uses the truck battery pack in parallel or series high voltage mode. Exec says: high voltage. Kyle then says so the system is 1000V capable, and answer given is: that's correct. In reality, from the specs sheets, this system is 500V max rated. So clearly using the truck in the lower voltage mode. Not a big deal, but concerning they answered incorrect. Not like this is hidden - the datasheets for both the inverter and the power shift charger have the details clearly listed.

The GM Energy exec is Aseem Kapur, Chief Revenue Officer and Head of Product.
I'd imagine integration of the EVSE/DC CCS into the inverter box could reduce costs, assuming these units pick up demand. Or a complete all-in-one setup, but haven't seen transfer switches integrated as of yet, maybe there's a code restriction.

Why are they using CCS instead of NACS?
Because the truck is CCS. The NACS deal isn’t until 2025 for all the automakers.
Because this systems sounds like it’s just like the Ford system and it will not work with NACS, because NACS does not support AC and DC power simultaneously. The same system with a NACS connector will have to use DC to charge the EV battery, rather than powering the on-board charger with AC.

This is for sure the logical next step. Want energy independence? Put a battery (or EV they can draw from), solar, wind whatever, in every home. Imagine how much energy a country could produce / store with all of those homes combined.

I just want to be able to manually plug the power out from the 240v 9kw outlet in the bed of rhe truck to my generator switch panel. No complicated expensive system needed.
I live in the woods, so I can't do solar panels. I still want to have my Rivian power my house instead of using my generator during an outage. I know it's not the most economical, but it's still better than running a gasoline or LP powered generator.
I have the Ford Home integration system at my house that I use with my Lightning. I installed it myself and at the same time I installed a 20 kw solar system at my house and with Ford’s system, my total cost was like $4300 with tax and shipping costs for the Home Integration System and a new 10 kw solar inverter (which the Home Integration system came with) would have cost me at least $2,000 alone. So I think for someone looking to install solar at the same time they install these types of systems, you can better justify the cost of the system and install, not to mention get a 30% solar tax credit for the components and install as well
The good thing about having a Powerwall is when you are on a TOU rate and can pump energy in the grid when it is most expense and get credit for that. It totally offsets my energy bill. Can the GM system do this with the vehicles' energy? that would be difference between this being or not being cost effective.
No it can't. Can't even power your house in a normal day at all. Which is really not good enough and why Kyle said you have to be a real real enthusiast to early adopt this system. But it's a first step at least. Hoping other companies are less conservative
Not at the moment, but they expect that capability with a software update at a later time. They have to negotiate with the utility companies.

For this price i almost get a Tesla Powerwall 13,5kwh hooked up to my solar and can charge on sunlight when im home. And when im at work the powerwall still supplys my home and also gets charged from the sun. and when the grid is off i dont even notice because it switches seemless to Tesla powerwall.
English is not my language, but I wonder if it is so difficult/complex to connect a vehicle with V2L, V2G or VTH to a house, and the battery of the vehicle acts as if it is a battery connected to the solar system?

3,000 sqft house in California - AC full blast, pool pump running, Dishwasher on, 113F outside and I was pushing 9.5kW draw. Typical max is more in the 7kW range during extreme high temps (i.e. AC at full blast.) I think 9.6kW and maybe some mild load regulating, but allowing for full or close to full AC operation is more than reasonable for most homes. Something that is a 10,000 sqft home would have many zones, and you could easily limit the cooling to a couple zones and be below the inverters 9.6kW limit.

More batteries more better. That truck has what like 200 KWH battery. My house takes about 1KW every hour so i could run for a week of the truck. That is crazy.

9.6 kW won't run my all-electric house. Insufficient for my critical loads. Why not 80 amps/19.2 kW?
More competition the better. Hopefully this drives prices down. I currently have two power walls and two EVs and I'm self sustained which is amazing. Now all we need a lower cost models and perhaps EV adoption can increase
I really wish Tesla and Rivian would sell a replacement AC charger module that can do V2G. That would allow my house to remain 100% solar powered during week-long cloudy weather. Charge $7200 for it - it would still be a bargain compared to Powerwalls.

I kind of find it interesting that GM went the exact same path as Ford, even though the take rate on smart home back up is tiny. $7500+install for 2kw more is silly. All us lightning guys are just running pro power 220 AC to a generator panel for ~ $500. The whole point of a large EV battery is avoiding home battery cost. I like the argument for off vehicle inverter based on utility red tape, but honestly without power arbitrage I think it's wishful thinking. IMHO....
One question you should ask just for the record is about extra wear and tear this adds onto the EV battery. For home backup power it's infrequent so who cares. But if you step up to more integration, the consumer needs to know he's not wearing out the car battery while doing all the cool stuff. I think it's probably not a huge factor but it would be nice to have an expert opinion.

The one person who gets around that by adding a disconnect switch. They will just turn off the grid when they want battery power.
🤔...great info...maybe I'll be able to get this system or the Ford system faster than #Tesla especially after I decide what BEV truck to go with but SierraEV SilveradoEV at the top due to battery size for towing now especially for this but waiting to see what the FordT3 will be about I'm sure they're not going to allow GM to just have free reign with this capability without challenging them, great times for sure
