Motherboard Heatsink Hoop Repair Using Super Glue - No Motherboard Removal or Soldering

- I've run into this a few times. The hoop that is soldered onto the motherboard pulls loose. I'm sure this is caused by excessive heat as well as the amount of tension that the heatsink arms have. I probably should have removed the video card to make this repair, but I just went for it. Boards have a bit of flex to them, but I've see this bring cold solders to life, Remove your cards to allow enough room if you're attempting this repair. For me this was a $60 repair and it included picking up the computer, adding ram, cleaning up the spyware, running updates, vacuuming it out and bringing it back to the home and hooking it up. Good thing this is a just a hobby, I'd starve!

I am glad I found this video! The wire loop holding the heatsink on my daughter's college PC (an HP Pavilion) fell off. I tried your fix almost 2 weeks ago and it is still holding. I am now using it as a 2nd PC at my house.
I super glued small heat sinks on my ram and it works like a champ! thx man
Great video!! I had this happen and just found the pin which pulled out. I will try this to see if it will fix my HP Compaq. I thought that I would also put on a thermopaste or glue also.
just an update i just fixed mine by using "kitchen and bath" 100% silicone rubber adhesive.. i put heat transfer compound on the middle raised square chip and then i put the silicone adhesive in a square box shape on the padding that was already on the bottom of the heatsink and gently pressed it on and its dried now for about 10min and it seems pretty solidly attached.. so i hope this comment helps someone in my position. the tube of silicone is cheap at any hardware store! FIXED:)
***** well actually i put the thermal compound in the middle and the silicone was just holding it in place.. i just checked it some hours later + its very firmly connected + very cool to the touch ! i got the idea from other "heatsink thermal adhesives" i saw on ebay for sale that were silicone based. The board i repaired was the Asus P4B533, a Pentium 4 from October 2002! it scored 255 passmark, 1025 geekbench2 with its puny 2.4ghz cpu;) heheh
How to stick heatsink with chip.? You only placed it on the chip and fixed the two arms. But what about their proper surface to surface contact?
I'm actually trying to find out how to take off the retention bracket off myself,... HOW
how do you remove that type of heatsink retention? i wanted to change out the thermal compound underneath but was unable to unhook the retention
any ideas for those of us that are missing the pins now? i had one of the two that fell off but now i have 0.. and missing 2 hoops to connect this stupid heatsink this is so annoying..
what will happen if I remove heatsink and then install???pls
did u put a superglue again under the heatsink ?
" Low tech, but it works."
You do know that superglue is corrosive right? Try adding a drop to the end of a cotton ear cleaner and wait for the smoke.
But can it run Crysis??
