I visited Detroit a few months ago. I looked at a plane in the distance and thought to myself "wait, that's not a 717." Lo and behold I discover a treasure trove of DC-9s and similar oldies and go spotting for nearly the whole day. Really a hidden gem of an airport.
In a former life when I was stationed at Scott AFB 30 years ago, I was a young crew chief on the military aeromedical version of the DC9; the C-9A Nightingale. She had JT8Ds too. Those airplanes were absolute tanks. Those sounds bring back a lot of memories.😊👍
I’m very proud to have YIP as one of my local airports. Such amazing classic jets here. I’d like to point out ones that have interesting history. The one that has the most unique history is the recently retired Kalitta Air Charters II N726CK shown at the start of the video. Originally meant for Hughes Air West in 1980 before their merger with Republic Airlines, the aircraft instead went to the UAE as Government Transport in early 1981, then Emirates in 1986, Qatar Airways 1995, converted to freighter and delivered to DHL 2001, then to Kalitta in 2010. 5:57 XA-UFO is tied with N726CK for most unique history. Delivered to AirTours International December 1990, then to Reno Air April 1996, American Airlines August 1999, Jetsgo Canada March 2003, Austral Lineas Aereas December 2005 (leased to Aerolineas Argentinas in that time), TrawelFly in 2014, Conversion started September 2020, delivered to Aeronaves TSM in April 2021. That’s some long history for being 33 Years Old. 4:37 XA-VBG is also very interesting. Delivered in April of 1993 to ATI (Alitalia Subsidiary), then quickly went to Alitalia October 1994, Converted to Cargo in early 2014, delivered to FitsAir Thailand May 2014, then Aeronaves TSM May 2018. Thank you for this amazing high quality footage these aircraft look so great for their age!
You understood the assignment. This is fantastic! As amazing as this video is, i know it being on youtube doesn't do it justic for how loud these planes are in person... these things were LOUD
These are the planes aviation junkies wanna see; MD 80-88s 727s and older 737 classics with low bypass engines, and company’s like kalitta and the even more notorious everts and all their awesome vintage planes landing and taking off. So freakin cool man! Great video.
Okay at the 8:59 mark is about the most iconic jet landing sound effect you can ever get :) Like, it sounds so iconic from movies and tv! The 727 never disappoints! Great work! And, of course the engines idling during taxi :)
The sad thing if it hadn't been for a bad design in a cargo door and a really questionable maintenance procedure at American Airlines, both relating to the DC 10, McDonnell Douglas would probably still be building airplanes
definitely one of the best airports to have a guaranteed chance to see 727s, mad dogs, and older 737s. airports like whitehorse, vancouver, and montreal also have some 737 classics/originals visiting everyday
The Ameristar 737 is wicked awesome with its original turbojets! That's one of the best takeoff clips I've ever seen! Love the Mad Dogs! Killer sunset clip!
I cannot believe this is all in 2024. Is Willow Run a spotter friendly airport? How many of these birds would you see in a day’s time? What I would give to see a 727 depart in front of me again 😍
Great video! My first flight was on a 727 in February of 1984- BDL to ATL on Eastern Airlines. I loved flying on them through the years. Beautiful airplane.
Never made a quick drive over to YIP during my undergrad years in Ann Arbor; I saw most of these planes flying over campus though! Nice to see these trijets still being flown/preserved
I don't know how you did it but you managed to capture the sound the main landing gear struts compressing on that Everts MD-80 when it touched down. Amazing! First time I ever heard that. Terrific video! Thank you!
Amazing videography, [perfect angles, perfect framing. Best of all the audio! I fueled N726Us many times in it's former lie as C-FCJV with Cargojet in Canada.
Ironically enough, I work for H.I.G Capital - the company that bought Ascent/USA Jet last year. And...I also fly the MD-80/82 on Microsoft Flight Simulator. So yeah, now I HAVE to get a USA Jet livery!!
So the thing no one’s talking about here with these Jets are that they are shuttling parts, components, and electronics to, and mostly from, various states in Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Minnesota, and other certain places on behalf of the Big Detroit 3 (Automakers). Yes they have other items they ship, but this is their main mission!
As someone who works in the On Demand cargo airline world this is more than true. Majority of the cargo that we (and all of these airlines) carry is parts for automakers all across the USA, YIP being a popular destination.
Love that first one going to KDAL, when was this taken? Would love to go to willow as I find it's spots to honestly be better than DTW but are they suitable for an Iphone15promax?
Wonder where all the ex Fed-Ex Boeing 727s with the upgraded, higher bypass JT3D-200s are at now. Seems they would be more efficient to fly than the original 727s with low bypass JT8Ds.
There’s still Super 27’s around, I believe in the UK, the oil spill response Super 27’s are ex-FedEx. Shame the British spotters won’t be able to experience what the original engines sound like. The MD-80’s also have the quieter -200 engines. Completely different animal compared to the J52 derived JT8D-1 through -17’s.
That's what I'm saying. I checked the flight history of that airport, haven't had any since 2021, and said only a civil avation museum with Cessnas only..
Gracias
The -1 through -17 engines on the 727, 732, and DC-9’s are all hushed, the MD-80s have the -200 engines which are Stage III from factory, thus don’t require Stage III hush kits. -1 through -17’s even with hush kits are still a hell of alot louder then the -200’s on the MD-80’s and Super 27’s. Completely different engine.
Making such a video means you understand what true aviation enthusiasts love at heart, I hope you get much more recognition from the community.
So true. Nothing sweeter than the JT8D. Well, maybe the JT9D 😁
@@smaze1782 I see your JT9D and raise you an RB211
Yup nothing is greater than the sound of old school retro jets roaring overhead ❤❤❤
The 727 is such a painfully beautiful airplane. Awesome to still see them flying.

Love these old workhorses, back when real aircraft were made!!
real airplanes are still made, they roll off assembly lines daily and fly all over the world!
So your saying the things with wings being built today are fake airplanes 🤔
In a former life when I was stationed at Scott AFB 30 years ago, I was a young crew chief on the military aeromedical version of the DC9; the C-9A Nightingale. She had JT8Ds too. Those airplanes were absolute tanks.
Those sounds bring back a lot of memories.😊👍
Love to hear the JT-8D spool up for take off on the old DC-9's and 727/737's. Brings back fond memories!
I absolutely love that sound!

flew on JetsGo md’s paying only $1 fares before their demise.

I've always loved the jt8d. It's nice to see a compilation of it in action
The JT8D is the best jet engine ever! Change my mind!
stuff now is lighter more efficient and requires less mx
RB 211
Reminds me of the sounds that got me hooked at the Tucson International Airport in the early 70's. Thank you. Incredible.

Music to my ears.
I miss watching regular traffic like this dressed in NWA livery at MSP. Great to see there's still a place for these jets.
Always loved flying into MSP and DTW and seeing the sea of Red Tails and all those beautiful airplanes they had. Miss NW so much!
@1:50 a B727 taking off is a beautiful sight and sound; I love the svelte MD80 too @5:25.
When Boeing's rival was McDonell Douglas. I miss them all
The sad thing if it hadn't been for a bad design in a cargo door and a really questionable maintenance procedure at American Airlines, both relating to the DC 10, McDonnell Douglas would probably still be building airplanes
Well said, delton!
As opposed to now when Boeing's main rival is itself 😕
Now that’s what I’m talking about, let’s go! 👏👏👏
Interesting that those charter cargo flights go to and come from border cities!!
I’m always curious what the cargo is…
Love these beautiful legacy workhorses. Beautiful videos. Thank you! Very enjoyable.

I hope this beauty 727 not sold to Aerosucre
I was exclusively on the 727-200c when I was with Delta Airlines. The 727-200c was such a magnificent aircraft!
The sound of my childhood living close to Ohare airport... 707s. DC9, 727s, DC8s
& 737s
Nice aircraft I remember flying on the B727 MD80. The good old days they are not forgoten.
Great video! My first flight was on a 727 in February of 1984- BDL to ATL on Eastern Airlines. I loved flying on them through the years. Beautiful airplane.
Fantastic. Absolutely classic! The idea of a compilation themed on this classic engine is thrilling.
This is how a jet aircraft should sound ❤❤❤
Wooooooow❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Retro jet paradise
Wow amazing video! 🤩✈️👍🏼
The 727 is the sexiest jetliner ever built... and the JT8D is the best sounding jet engine ever made!
Incredible video thanks!! 🙏🏻👍🏻
727 footage is great!
What a great video... 727 ❤
I used to love those 727 Jets especially Eastern's whisper jet
Awesome compilation of the legendary PW JT9D Engines!! Thank you for filming ❤❤❤
Not JT9s, but 8s!
Still happy the MADDOGS still flying. Love the MD-80 series ❤
Great video! To see these jets fly brings back memories for when I flew on them. I miss those days.
Aah, those bucket reversers never gets old!!
mad dogs..the great show on earth...ever!!!
Never made a quick drive over to YIP during my undergrad years in Ann Arbor; I saw most of these planes flying over campus though! Nice to see these trijets still being flown/preserved
Anything without a rotating beacon just isn’t an airplane - superb footage and filming techniques.
WOW I needed this. Thanks for the memories! 👍🏼

Doesn't that little DC-9 look cute next to the 727s! 🤗

Wow some beautiful old classic jets thanks for sharing 👍👌🇬🇧
Ok willow run is paradise
kdal is my local airport! happy to see a 727 over there!
Woooow!!!!!!!!! Old jet paradise
I love the 727s with winglets.
So cool seeing the Everts MD-80 outside its usual haunts in Alaska.
Excellent photography! Thank you. I used to fly with the Rolls Royce "Speys" on my aircraft, similar technology, thirsty but very reliable.
Still the best Jet engine PW made back then.
I saw a USAjet at palm beach international airport when it took off. It was kinda loud tbh
Absolutely beautiful compilation ❤
When was this filmed?
✈️✈️✈️✈️👍👍👍👍
watching from Laredo Tx ✈️🙋♂️
Ironically enough, I work for H.I.G Capital - the company that bought Ascent/USA Jet last year. And...I also fly the MD-80/82 on Microsoft Flight Simulator.
So yeah, now I HAVE to get a USA Jet livery!!
My God I miss it so much!!!my first type rating was 737-200 with PW JT8D-17 🥺
Excellent video! Like going back in time! Love it! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
great video, that ending sunset was magical, well done!
Thank you for this amazing clip! ❤
this is aircraft. real flying.
Very beautiful clip 👍🏻👍🏻❤
727. great plaine.
Back when jet engines actually looked and sounded like jet engines
Beautiful. I commend you for the fabulous camera work as well. Bravo, Sir.
A lot of flights to LRD might have to get down there someday and get some shots of these “rare” birds. Laredo is a 5-hour drive from my home.
perfect video from jurassic park :)

UNDERRATED CHANNEL, who agrees, great vid : )
fantastic vid
you made my day thank you

Just Curious Is This Airport Still Operating Cargo
JT8D-200’s are completely different then the JT8D-1 through -17 in every way, despite the -1 through -17’s being hushed.
Good camera angles
are u in LA?

XA-UFO is a good registration. 🛸 Seems to be a lot of traffic to Mexico, or to right on the border ...
what camera and editing apps do you use?
super 😉
Excellent. And here I thought all the B 727s had flown to faraway airports in greener pastures.
What I meant to say.
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
11:50 did that jet have a gravel kit on the nose wheel?
No, that’s just part of the aircraft’s design.
@@EmeryE2 All these years and I’ve never noticed that on the MD-80 series. What the heck lol
@@hockeyguy9974 yeah, hard to notice if you aren’t fully focusing on the gear, so I can’t blame you for not noticing.

When was it filmed tough?
That's what I'm saying. I checked the flight history of that airport, haven't had any since 2021, and said only a civil avation museum with Cessnas only..

too many hush-kits 😤
