I became afraid of so many nutritious foods for what ends up being zero good reason It took me a long time to undo the psychological damage, and happy to report that my food anxieties have nearly all disappeared
I still think Hyman has some good things to say, but his absolute fear of carbs is insane. 300 grams a day of carbs is too many.. but he seems to suggest that even thinking about a carb will make you obese.
Not his fault you can’t control your feelings, more like you need to change your view on the world so you don’t get anxiety as easily. Preface: My comment is NOT to insinuate that Layne is wrong and the carnivore people are right on the topic of dairy, I'm just mentioning it bc it might be valuable to someone reading. The single most valuable thing I learned during my brief experiment with carnivore was that dairy had been causing the relatively severe acne I'd been dealing with from age 12+/- to 38. It cleared up completely on carnivore and every experiment with trying to add dairy back in since then has resulted in it coming back. So I'm dairy free for life now I guess. I really have no idea how it would cause acne but it apparently does in some people.
Causes acne because body produces antibodies against the proteins in the milk, immune system goes on red alert and starts attacking and trying to get it out of you... Not everyone, but I would suspect most people have a dairy problem in one way or another and many don’t make the connection. How is it okay that we drink milk from another mammal when we are adults that don’t even need milk from our own breed anymore. I love milk.., if I could drink raw milk with no consequences then it would be the basis of my diet... but that’s not how it is!!

Many will tell me it’s because a) they read it from an expert (“guru”) online and b) found it made them uncomfortable. I’ll ask about what they ate and very often it’s “oh well, when I have a pizza or ice cream”... Haha...so, was it the dairy in isolation or the entire meal and the sheer volume of food consumed? It’s a shame to see people make dieting harder than it needs to be due to misinformation out there. Anyway, what happened to patience and moderation 😅. Thanks for the video!
@@everydamndayobesityobsessi3137 I’m sure he pointed this out by showing us, that there’s no certainty to this study. The variables are the race of people. There’s no right answer and there’s a minuscule chance that a1 is bad for us, but can be replaced by a2 without any bad effects. Unless your body can’t really process it, that’s a whole other conversation. At the end, it’s been proven to not be an inflammatory, on the contrary, it can reduce inflammation in some.
The amount of FUD that Layne has eliminated from my life over the years is amazing. I discovered him when he did those two incredible take downs of the game changers and have religiously watched his content since. 10/10, have repeatedly highly recommended it to my friends.
I believe it's thought that the further away from warm climate you get, more people have had to rely on dairy as a food source. In nature it's said to be normal if you can't consume it as it's a way for mammals to naturally stop the nursing. Not sure if it's true or not, but sounds resonable. And cold milk is sooo good I'm not sure why anyone would want to cut it out.
I have lactose intolerance (or malabsorption) unfortunately and have been working with my NHS community dietician to handle it (extremely painful bloating, gas, loose stools, hard/distended stomach etc). Never once have I been told to cut out such an important food group permanently by them, but first step was to replace it with lactose free milk. Luckily I did very well with that so have continued on with it. But even then I was encouraged to add normal dairy back in slowly increasing the amount daily to see at what point my symptoms restarted. I noticed I could handle about 150ml of normal milk, cheese and yoghurt before symptoms started but can't handle any whey protein powder at all. Once the dietician knew that, they wisely advised to keep that amount in my diet and continue to use the lactose free milk on top of that. I don't understand why people and gurus have this knee-jerk reaction to label something as inherently bad or unhealthy simply because your body can't handle it the way it should. And then to advise everyone else to simply not consume it! It never occurs to them that maybe it's your body that is damaged and not working as it should be (probably because of unhealthy previous dietary habits like myself) and rather than label the food as bad maybe label the body as damaged and try to fix that and manage it so you can include such a nutritious food group like dairy in your diet (even if it means you can only include a small amount). I see this a lot with low carb/keto demonising sugar because some of us have such damaged bodies that we can't respond to it properly anymore and suddenly it becomes the cause, rather than the result, of a broken bodily system.
@@samvandervelden8243 That's fine. If you have a religious/ethical view on the subject then you do what you feel you are morally obliged to do. I respect everyone's right to their own belief.
I have adult acne that seems to be aggravated by dairy. My dermatologists seem to think that dairy does worsen acne. It would be cool to hear Dr. Norton's take on associating acne with dairy.
I'm lactose intolerant and started with 1 cup a day and now have worked up to 16 cups (gallon) a day and feel great. Progressive overload. Thanks Layne!
@@logangaddypeople are so dumb and brainwashed reason why milk is demonized and bloats people is Becouse shit has been highly pasteurized which destroys all enzyme’s like lactase that’s suppose to help milk get easily digested so raw milk is the way plus it has lots of benefits
So whole milk is a little worse than 2% or fst free? That'd suck because 2% and fat free always give me digestive issues. I used to think I was lactose intolerant, but noticed I don't have that issue with whole milk.
The reason you don’t have problems with whole milk is because lactose cannot be stored in fat (butter is lactose free because it’s all totally made up of fat). Whole milk has less lactose because of the fat content. Skim milk is worst for those with lactose intolerance (or malabsorption). I think he was citing evidence for a connection to cancer and full fat dairy, but it was only one study and basically he said a higher fat diet can lead to cardio issues and possibly cancer. I would keep drinking your whole or 2% milk if you like it and it’s easier on your stomach. I am lactose intolerant and simply drink the lactaid milk so I don’t have to worry about it
Hi, what about Acne and Dairy? Especially semi-skimmed milk? there are studies, that confirm a causal effect between aggravation of acne and dairy intake. and acne should be somewhat systemic inflammation right?
Pretty sure that is what happened to me. I use to drink a ton of milk when young and then stopped for many years. Tried it again and it was upsetting me. I said there is no way I am lactose intolerant now. I forced my self to drink it and eventually my body was able to handle it again.
I eat full fat Greek yoghurt about 4 times a week. Big fan of cheese, especially grilled cheese sandwiches. I'm also a 6'4", 36 year old dutch man. I'm reading everywhere that being tall and consuming a bunch of dairy are risk factors for prostate cancer. Still wondering if I should lower my intake as I get older?
all those zeloits, yes i did keto, yes i did fasting what i got yes i lost weight but i got some major hair diffuse thinning.... If you cut out a food group, at some point you are going to be lacking in some part of your diet. Thanks again Layne for exposing yet again those morons.
Savage breakdown as always. Not gonna lie I used to somewhat believe the dairy is inflammatory thing, but I never stopped consuming it really because I told myself the news says dont do this or eat this one minute and then the next they are like this just in eggs are good for you. Its like Im going to eat what people have been eating for centuries and take my chances
Good work as always Layne, dairy is totally awesome. I primarily use almond milk these days as it's lower calorie but still drink skim milk in coffee, eat lots of yoghurt, various types of cheese and even cook with cream occasionally. Thanks to the cows and dairy farmers.
I’ve had horrible out of control hayfever for 33 years, until I took the advice of a friend to stop dairy and what do you think.. it miracuously dissappeared completely. My friend and our mutual friend got rid of their cat allergies when they stopped dairy. Do you have an explanation for this, Layne?
You just debunked his video!!! Everyone has their biases, if you want to find out something to confirm yours then just google it and there’ll be a study that does that for you... Some (a lot) of people are dairy intolerant... not just lactose, not just casein not just whey but all three. We are not all carbon cut outs of Layne Norton!! You know your body better than him
@@Wavesurfa I'm not trying to debunk anything. Just sharing my experience and asking Layne a question. I suggest to not argue with random strangers online. It's not good for your mental health.
The hormones they pump cows full of to maximize muscle mass for slaughter along with the fact that its legit breast milk meant to support the growth of a baby cow means when you consume that breast milk, you’re also consuming those hormones, like estrogen.
Love the counter clockwise approach against so much evil i hear about dairy... but you always stay nuanced, so that's really good. You dive into the grey area often instead of being zealot
Hey! I did carefull observation of my diet and whenever I drank more milk I got acne around my mouth on the side. When I stopped it improved and milk was the only factor I changed. What are your thoughts on dairy and acne?
I think a lot of people observe that from dairy. I think it's one of the very known side effects for people who go the the extreme with the "GOMAD" diet. Of course that's anecdotal, but it would be interesting to look more in depth....cause in a way, that's actually some type of inflammation of the skin. Then i wonder if there are differences based on the diet of the cows (grass/grain fed), and whether they are given hormones and antibiotics etc.
I cured my acne at the age of 35 by avoiding dairy and gluten, but dairy was my biggest enemy. I can still use butter without problems and eat A2 mozzarella di bufala.😁
I'm no diet expert, but from what I have seen, if it's a commonly consumed food, people will say it's bad for you in order to market from it. Of course some people will have a bad experience with dairy, but these people who market eggs, milk, bread, butter, fruit (see a pattern?) are generally missing the point of a balanced diet
Seems to be pretty true in my personal experience that absorption issues come when you aren't used to having dairy. As a kid I stopped for a few years then when I started up again it caused distress for a bit till I got used to it. May have to start back gradually again with low fat this time.
I totally agree. I wish I could consume dairy but it gives me cystic acne. Eliminated and my acne went away. Would you call that localized inflammation or systemic? It makes me sad because I love dairy and whey protein 😢
when i was at my strongest I was eating 6000 calories a day and 1/3 of that was whole milk. 2000 calories of whole milk daily. I feel sorry for people who have problem with lactose its definitely a genetic disadvantage in the strength game.
Milk, like eggs, is one of the most important, useful, versatile, complex foods on Earth. If your body is bad at digesting these things (or allergic or whatever), then sucks to be you. Comment for the algorithm
Bravo. I don’t know if it was the tequila in my veins right now or all the brilliant video editing, but this was the funniest video you’ve made to date, Layne. Thanks for all the great content!
@biolayne I imagine the chances of you reading this are probably small, but what are your thoughts around dairy (specifically whey and casein) causing skin issues like acne? I have an anecdotal case study of one but when I do a lot of casein and whey protein shakes or even greek yogurt my skin starts to break out. If I remove the casein/whey/yogurt and replace them with pea protein and almond/cashew milk, the skin conditions go away. I don't have any digestive issues with dairy whatsoever - just seems like it causes other issues. It's an easy enough problem to solve but just curious what your thoughts are around the mechanisms that might cause this sort of reaction.
I agree. I get a rash on my upper arm that people call “chicken skin” it can get really red, dry, and bumpy. Whenever I stop having dairy it goes away 🤷♀️ something in the milk I get does not agree with my skin.
lactose malabsorption vs lactose intolerance, would there be a difference (benefit of one over the other) when someone intakes a lactase supplement or does the lactase supplement benefit both?
I’m susprised he didn’t cover lactose free milk. I’m lactose intolerant (confirmed by hurried breath test, not just self reported). I drink lactose free milk and therefore have no issues. Since lactose free yogurt is hard to find and I love yogurt, I take lactaid tablets before eating yogurt, and also ice cream since I don’t want to be limited to the selection of lactose free ice cream that my store carrier. Taking the tablets is great as it takes care of it and I can still eat dairy. Many cheeses are naturally lactose free, especially anything aged- cheddar and Parmesan are both lactose free as lactose is stored on the whey and those cheeses pour off the whey and then age it for a period so any remaining whey dries up. We live near Cabot cheese factory and the factory tour emphasizes the fact that their cheddar is lactose free naturally and it states that on the package too! I’m also not bothered by mozzarella so I wonder if there is much in that cheese too

I tried everything... Over the counter medication. Neti pot. Saline wash. Nasal sprays. Even praying to God. Nothing worked. Still couldn't breathe. Can I read that milk can actually make nose congestions worse. Apparently if you have a fungus growth in your sinuses... Dairy can make it worse? Anyways, I did stop all dairy about a week ago. My sinus congestion is fading. I can kind of breathe normal again. Thats all i did different....stopped dairy. Wonder what is happening there ...if anything at all.
I wish studies could find a way to measure overall bone quality, but bone mineral density. Bone mineral density by itself won’t reduce fractures. You can have the best bone mineral density on the planet, but without elasticity, it will crack like a concrete block being dropped. It’s a dangerous assumption in my opinion to use bone mineral density as the end-all measure. There was a recent cohort study showing increased fracture with dairy intake. There are many studies that various osteoporosis drugs increase density, but also increase fractures.
He mentioned osteoporosis also. If you have a chance can you comment on this. My mom had it and I do drink milk regularly for the calcium/D benefits. Also can Fairlife protein milk really contain the amount of protein they claim just by the way they process it?
"Lactose limited" seems like a better way of putting it than "lactose intolerant." A number could also be added on, to indicate the maximum level tolerated. So "lactose limited 4.5" would indicate that the person would be able to tolerate 4.5 ounces of milk without having problems.
Do you have any recommendations for nutrition resources to learn about the Physiological processes. I’m a pharmacy student and we don’t get nearly enough education on this, and I want to make sure I have an intimate knowledge to help my future patients. Thank you for your time.
It's Inflammatory because dairy is always consumed along with lots of sugar and carbs: Chocolate milk, Starbucks coffee, tacos, sandwiches, ice cream, etc. Rarely does someone consume only a block of cheese for lunch. Know what I'm saying?
Been taking dairy for ever and won't stop doing so but I'm pretty curious what your take is on dairy for the skin as in that it causes acne, stuffed pores and what not. Wy is it that a lot of people feel like dairy is causing these skin problems?
Can someone please explain to me what systemic inflammation is? I feel like this word is used so much but many people, including myself, have no clue what it actually means.
You’re probably familiar with acute inflammation: you get a scratch on your arm and the area gets red, warm, and swollen. That’s your body fighting intruders and repairing the damage. The trouble comes when certain medical conditions amplify or prolong this response, placing your body’s systems in a state of prolonged stress. This appears to be a factor in developing serious problems like a weakened immune system, diabetes, and heart disease. The science is still pretty new on how this all works and what causes what, so for now the field is rife with quacks demonizing specific foods and pushing their diet books.
Also, a2 dairy is still dairy. Some people do also struggle with A1 protein, as he said, but those people can eat goat cheese or A2 milk, which is still dairy. My little man struggled with A1 protein as a baby. It is a common issue for babies, and is the reason we need formulas that have the protein already broken down. I found an A2 milk formula that I used for my little man once I had to supplement my milk with formula. Even when the babies mom is drinking milk it can affect the baby because somehow it affects the mother's milk protein. I can't tell ya the science of that, I just know many women have to cut dairy while breastfeeding. I didn't quite buy cutting all dairy though because, my milk is still dairy. So, my take was, if he can't tolerate dairy then he can't tolerate my milk at all, which has lactose and whey. My milk on it's own though has only A2 protein, as does goat milk, sheep milk, buffalo milk, etc. Therefore, I switched to all A2 milk sources, and his colic issues went away. I trialed eating regular dairy again, and his issues came back. He grew out of his issue with milk protein a little before the age of 2. A1 protein in milk is a product of selective breeding for high milk production, and there are older breeds of cattle who only produce a2 milk. As far as I can tell, all of those cows were bred prior to the 1930, for example many Jersey cows carry this gene. However, cows in general only exist as a result of selective breeding. They didn't exist naturally in the wild. They come from the Wild Euroch. It is interesting though how mammals closer to their original state do not produce A1 proteins in their milk. With that, I can understand why some folks would pause, but yet again... cows also didn't exist naturally in nature, nor did chickens, or many of the vegetables we consume today. For me personally, I do like the idea of consuming things closer to their natural state when possible, for instance meat breed chickens are mutants, so I am working to start processing my own chickens again, but I also recognize that eating chicken in any form is absolutely something that would never have existed without selective breeding. I would be interested to see more studies on inflammatory markers with A1/A2 milk versus A2 milk, with large numbers of people to see how many people who see an affect on their inflammatory markers with one milk versus the other. But until a study shows something different... imma assume I do not have an issue with A1 milk and keep eating all the dairy.
@@ColdRunnerGWN all my bloods come back fine and milk deffo causes my imglamation or something in it does as really bad of it and pushes on to nerve headache from hell and pain in wrist joints from it
I don't like your first inflamation argument and study. Anecdotally, I drink lots of milk. Grass fed, jersey cow milk. No problems whatsoever. My girlfriend, only drinks 6 ounces per day. When she drinks more? Symptoms of bloating, gas, and inflamation. When either of us drink conventional milk, both of us get much worse of the same symptoms with only 2 or 8 ounces of milk. Because of that, we only drink enough to not have those inflamation problems. So, in short, we autoregulate our milk intake up to the point before we have any symptoms.
What about estrogens, growth hormones, estrogen, etc added to the cow feed affect a person drinking cows milk. I generally use goat or sheep milk products, not cows milk . I not sure how frequently sheep or goats are fed these additives
It seems that no one told the Maasai. They consume milk of some kind for every meal. Fresh, fermented and butter. Also mixed with blood. Sometimes drank fresh, sometimes cooked. The actual consumption of their highly prized cattle is only occasional and usually eaten raw. Also eat honey and tubers. Very healthy! Completely free of heart disease until they adopt a more….modern diet.
It helps to understand that Mikkhaila Peterson is starting from her limited perspective as an individual who had numerous dietary related health problems, directly tied to her genetics (Jordan has the same health issues), that took years to sort out, and ran contrary to the Canadian national health system medical advice and treatments. If you have a specific genetic propensity to respond poorly to specific, or even a range of food sources, you may be in that minority percentage of the overall population who responds very favorably to a "carnivore diet." BUT... anyone with a decent level of medical knowledge would NOT recommend a "carnivore diet" to an individual suffering from something like alpha-gal syndrome (because it would literally kill them), but this is the problem with people who have a public forum voice, thanks to being related to someone with a degree of fame, dispensing health and nutritional advice based upon their individual situations.

Thanks Layne. This was particularly helpful for me. I actually am lactose intolerant. I experience very severe bloating with even small amounts of dairy that can last for weeks. It’s miserable. I’m middle eastern btw. It got progressively worse where I used to be able to tolerate small amounts and lactase pills would help to now where I can tolerate barely any. My understanding is that the lactase enzyme gets more deficient with age. I just realized that I can tolerate lactose-free dairy products just fine. Game changer for me! This video just reassured me that as long as I’m symptom free with that all is good! So happy I can enjoy my Greek yogurt again. (Lactose-free version). It was literally my favorite food!
Why is he comparing "low vs. high dairy intake" to judge if dairy is inflammatory instead of no dairy intake vs. dairy intake? If anything his first scientific conclusion should be that consuming any amount of dairy results in the same amount of inflammation.
Does this mean dairy is not inflammatory? I eat a lot of dairy because I have osteoporosis and it's one of the most affordable animal foods more affordable than meat and I get my vitamin K2 from cheese and protein too but the claims of dairy causing osteoporosis are very scary is there any truth to that???? 😦
For those who experience lactose malabsorption issues you might want to try grass fed whey isolate protein which is low in its lactose profile and high in protein profile.

Correct me if wrong, but isn't most of the nutrition in milk nullified by the pasteurization process and thus has to be re-added, e.g., D and calcium? I have lactose intolerance and opt for soy-based options like fortified soy milk and firm tofu, both of which have a lot of calcium, protein and healthy fat. what really is the benefit of dairy over that of other sources with similar nutrient content?
@@One-Ring-To-Rule-Them-All Raw milk contains the digestive enzyme lactase, but also bacteria that help the digestive process. It’s the process of pasteurisation that kills these natural beneficial components.
Are adults less lactose tolerant because they consume less diary or do they consume less dairy because they are less lactose tolerant? Are dairy containing foods really more kid-centric? I guess in my case I ate a lot more breakfast cereal as a kid, and milk on cereal was really my only source of drinking milk. I also ate more processed macaroni and cheese (something easy to cook before you learn to cook, lol) but, with the obvious exception of breast milk, I never really though of dairy products as particularly kid centric. You have intestinal hyper permeability aka leaky gut. The casein protein in dairy in of itself is not inflammatory in a healthy individual with a healthy and fortified gut and gut microbiome. However if you have a compromised guy microbiome due to maybe anti biotics, or long term damage from plants containing high levels of santo nutrients then it may result to your gut being hyper permeablez and when you eat dairy the proteins in it cause an auto immune response which was you mentioned makes you inflamed and the other guy with his eczema. Fix your gut first before you can reintroduce dairy in your diet
@@angelabaron8569 depends but I would 100% go carnivore, which may vary according to how hyper permeable your gut or small bowel is since it is 80% of your immune system and where you absorb most of your nutrients. Y'know maybe you tolerate seafood very well whereas others won't, others tolerate eggs whereas maybe you won't, and as you implied you don't tolerate dairy but certain people on carnivore might. It depends but going on an all meat diet might be a good start, and removing inflammatory foods like seafood, eggs, daiiry depending on how inflammed your gut is could be a start and then maybe after 6 months to a year try to reintroduce little by little since a strict carnivore diet has been shown to help repair, fortify, and rest the gut. Good luck on your journey.

Sitting here eating yogurt feeling great that I'm part of the 25% of the human population that has zero problems with dairy
Lol. Yogurt and aged cheese don’t affect me at all…but cream, whole milk, cream cheese…swollen body next morning.
Layne should have over a million subscribers for how he simplifies science for a million trainers.
It's not an important food group
@@samvandervelden8243 Don't include it in your diet then.

So whole milk is a little worse than 2% or fst free?
That'd suck because 2% and fat free always give me digestive issues. I used to think I was lactose intolerant, but noticed I don't have that issue with whole milk.
I think it depends who you ask! I've heard that whole milk is better for your teeth and may have some nutrients that the others don't.

At least in America, if its a commonly consumed food, you probably shouldn’t be eating it.
What are your views on consuming raw milk and raw cheese? I’ve read that these are very anti inflammatory?
If you have problems with lactose, you can also switch to Greek or Bulgarian yogurt and cheese.
Thanks Layne for putting so much time and effort in these amazing videos!

Research it... layne will only give you his biased opinion
I’m also not bothered by mozzarella so I wonder if there is much in that cheese too
Is oat milk ok / far less inflammatory ?

Hi Layne. Are there any potential downsides of a supplementation with lactase enzymes to reduce the symptoms of lactose malabsorption?
You won't train your body to produce it.
"Lactose limited" seems like a better way of putting it than "lactose intolerant."
A number could also be added on, to indicate the maximum level tolerated. So "lactose limited 4.5" would indicate that the person would be able to tolerate 4.5 ounces of milk without having problems.
Excellent. Your stuff is brilliant. Keep clearing the clouds for us. Thanks.

Can someone please explain to me what systemic inflammation is? I feel like this word is used so much but many people, including myself, have no clue what it actually means.
It's same thing as systematic racism. Marketing bs

It helps to understand that Mikkhaila Peterson is starting from her limited perspective as an individual who had numerous dietary related health problems, directly tied to her genetics (Jordan has the same health issues), that took years to sort out, and ran contrary to the Canadian national health system medical advice and treatments.
If you have a specific genetic propensity to respond poorly to specific, or even a range of food sources, you may be in that minority percentage of the overall population who responds very favorably to a "carnivore diet."
BUT... anyone with a decent level of medical knowledge would NOT recommend a "carnivore diet" to an individual suffering from something like alpha-gal syndrome (because it would literally kill them), but this is the problem with people who have a public forum voice, thanks to being related to someone with a degree of fame, dispensing health and nutritional advice based upon their individual situations.

My brother had problems with dairy for a period. He just hadn't been consuming it. He trained it back.
Correct me if wrong, but isn't most of the nutrition in milk nullified by the pasteurization process and thus has to be re-added, e.g., D and calcium? I have lactose intolerance and opt for soy-based options like fortified soy milk and firm tofu, both of which have a lot of calcium, protein and healthy fat. what really is the benefit of dairy over that of other sources with similar nutrient content?
Macro and micro diff things with nutrition
Pasteurization barely changes the levels of any nutrient except vitamin C and it doesn't completely destroy it, just lowers its concentration.
Pasteurisation changes the proteins and removes the enzymes that make milk easier to digest... yes it ruins the milk. Get raw if you can.
@@Wavesurfa wait a minute - the ENZYMES are in you and not in the milk!! 😂😂😂

Are dairy containing foods really more kid-centric? I guess in my case I ate a lot more breakfast cereal as a kid, and milk on cereal was really my only source of drinking milk.
@@MikhailCueva what kind of diet do you recommend??
