Hasan is right. This could work as a tactic. Unfortunately it isn't centralized enough in its execution. You'd need to mass unfollow like 3 people a week or something for it to work, because otherwise it isn't clear enough that there is a concerted, popular effort.

It’s weird that the goal is to get celebrities to speak up but when one of them did these same people were like “it’s too late you should’ve done it half a year ago” and at that point what do you genuinely want to come from it if emailing your representatives didn’t work why do you think getting random celebrities to speak out will? I mean you can block them I don’t really care it’s your choice but all blocking does is so that you can’t see their content and they can’t see yours

I respect their effort and being invested, but am I wrong in thinking that if you have to scare people into being allies that they won't make for genuinely helpful bedfellows? It makes me think of the person yelling at Alec Baldwin or whoever to say "Free Palestine" , but then he would just say it to shut the person up which cheapens the message.

I don't know. I feel like what's the point in trying to get celebrities to fake care about Palestine. I'm all for decentering celebrities and idolization but we have to wait for them to make one little Palestine post so we're satisfied? They make one Palestine post to suppress their fans and move on. That's so weird and gross to me honestly. That's grosser than them not talking about Palestine at all tbh. Also it becomes a point to where people are just going to be naming celebrities and creators that they've always had a personal distaste for. For example, Hasan and Gigi Hadid. Like I said I don't have a problem with people learning to decenter celebrities from their lives (even tho in a way this is also centering...) but I don't know. Just feels off to me. It feels like something that turns into something not positive real fast. A creator I know talked about it better than me. She's the one that makes the geeky wolverine videos if anyone remembers her name.

I’m not on IG. What’s the use of blocking someone if they never try to contact you? Can you tell if you’ve been blocked? Is it public knowledge how many times someone has been blocked? Wouldn’t a mass unfollowing be more appropriate since you’d see their count go down.

I think the blockout could be good on top of protesting, sending emails, and funding, but i fear its being overblown as this is the best and only thing... we should be focusing on what is happening, educating, funding resources, and pressuring representatives not this :c

Constantly sending messages to your representatives is a lot more effective than blocking random celebrities on social media. One is aiming directly at the people who run this country, and making it clear that people are aware of their alignment and how they can be replaced if they continue being vile, while the other is aiming at mfs who usually have nothing to do with this issue. How is blocking, say, Zendaya on Twitter going to help Palestinians in Gaza? Come on, man.

Whatever you think people should do instead of making block lists, people can do both and dismissing a method of dissent that actually has potential to be fruitful is just kinda dumb at best tbh.
There's a lot of debate around what to do from here, whether the block should extend to the moment these celebrities start actively talking about Palestine, or whether just keeping these celebrities blocked in an attempt to completely block out their social capital is better, but the point is, people are getting motivated to use the capital they wield against powerful figures and that's a good thing.
I don't care much about how they do it, but wielding social capital against celebrities for a good cause is a good thing. Whether the movement lasts or ends up losing traction, only time will tell.
