Docs collaboration is AWESOME. In my doctoral classes I worked with two other classmates to take notes in a shared Google doc. One would type the lecturer verbatim. The second person would correct any mistakes in the first person’s typing or add anything missing. The third person would replicate the professor’s powerpoint in slides and insert it into the document. We rotated positions. EVERYONE in the class asked for access to our notes!!
Thanks for sharing that!
Thank! I have turned my 88-year-old aunt onto your channel . You are so helpful. And you teach me a lot of stuff. I had no idea about the explore menu, and now I do!
I'm so glad!
Another very good lesson. You have a very relaxing style while giving a lesson.
I enjoy all of your videos, thank you for the time you invest in your channel.
Hi Steve: I really like your short features demonstrating the features of various software programs. They are informative, succinct, and helpful. The teachings style you use is excellent. Many thanks.
Wow! Google docs has been improving quite well. I've been used to Ms Word but it's expensive, especially with the constant upgrades . I'll be sticking with Google docs and will be using the dictate feature a lot. Thank you for this video!
Steve is the Ultimate Tech video Creator. He has been doing for 30+ years, from TV to Website to UA-cam to Webinars. I was so peeved when they cancelled Dotto Cafe and Dot Tech TV. He had great informational tv shows and tech review. I'm pretty sure he was one of the 1st ones doing that. Back in the days when you got Free floppy disks and CD's in huge Computer magazines, dam I miss those.
It is great to hear from old viewers! Thanks for the kind comments. But you should know "they" did not cancel the shows, that was all me, the time was right to move on, we had a great run but the online world is a better fit for our content.
@@dottotech But didn't CRTC also change channel line up making funding hard for independent shows.
Thanks for the tips, Steve. Good job. I like to use the Explore feature for image search. I also like Google Drawings to add word art. The automatic save is a great feature that makes the different versions possible.
Excellent in every way.
You're communicating very well with me. Many thanks.
Fascinating. I have used Google Docs in collaborative mode, but I had not realised that it has such useful features.
Just amazing; almost wish I was back working to utilize all these cool features. I was from the Word Perfect era and when I think about all the things we had to embed with codes to get various formats and effects ... OMG. Love your videos and be it "aboot" or "about" keep cranking them out.
Learning a lot from your videos. Your presentations are clear and concise, not laden with filler material. Really appreciate that. Thanks for your good work.
Glad you like them!
Thanks again Steve. Since switching our office to Googe Workspaces I have been immersing myself in the Gecosystem. The one feature that is missing is text format presets that are NOT headings. Yes, you can have alternate formatted ‘normal’ text using the paint text tool but it is clunky and inefficient. But the recent integrated collaboration updates are amazing for staff teams.
Love this! Explore is a new feature for me. Thanks for sharing.
Another good one, Steve. So happy I found your channel. My previous experience with you was, as I said in an earlier comment, via PBS on cable TV. I’ve never used Google Docs. Haven’t had the need. But will consider it now. In this vid, you said something that hit home. You said we all Select All and delete it. I’ve done that more often than I would like using Word. I’m a fast typist and pretty accurate, but sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain … way ahead of it, and instead of pressing Command-S-Return to save document, I hit Command-A-Return. Gaaah! Fortunately, I’ve had the presence of mind to IMMEDIATELY press Command-Z. A real life saver, that. Thanks, much.
You can open a picture & extract the text from it. Right click on the image & open with google Docs (after you place it in the dicument).
Thanks! I agree with 'about!' coming from northern Ireland, we pronounce 'about' similarly...in Canada, you guys are the product of considerable Ulster/Scots migration over the past 200+ years!
Thank you! You such a great teacher and offer soooo much!
wow, lots of features I didn't realize the details! Thanks
First off; never ever had heard of spatchcocking a chicken. Now I have. ;) Secondly; the Explore feature you showed I think is going to be the most useful for me while working on my book draft of a true crime novel I'm doing. Placing citations automatically as I locate the info is going to be huge!! Thanks so much for THAT, Steve. Have a great wknd.
thanks again, wish i was at your level, working on it. glad someone as you to help others. thanks!!!!!
Awesome!!! Thank you very much, Steve!
That explore option is a great tool. Can't wait to try it!
Excellent introduction to some of the useful features in Google Docs. I've only recently decided to take the plunge and replace LibreOffice with Docs. It's the first time I've looked at Google Docs, but I have to say it has certainly come a long way since I first took a peep.
Absolutely agree that the substitute function is very useful, as is the explore function. Not so sure about the voice typing. Spoken and written language are different beasts, and, as you point out, dictation can often come across as rambling and/or incoherent. Thanks for sharing!
Once again, a very informative and helpful video. 👍
Steve Dotto tech master and future chef!
I'm starting to use Google Docs more & more. Great tips!
Good stuff!
Comment feature is pretty cool when sharing with others that aren't granted editor rights.
I like the '@' search menu really powerful especially when linked to the other applications such as Calendar (meeting notes). It links to people contacts, files, building blocks, dates, menu shortcuts etc.
You now also have the pageless option
I am totally geeking out over the Explore feature. I didn't know about it. I write a lot and that is AWESOME. Thank You🐓
Happy to help!
Steve, Google has actually updated the Explore features for referencing your sources. Under "Tools" they have put a "Citations" link that allows for in-text citations and will create a Works Cited or Reference page as well. I think it a huge improvement for writing research essays, etc. Thanks for the information that you put on these videos.
Great as usual. Thanks man .
👍that explore function looks really useful for my blogs. Especially the citation bit 😀
It really is!
Congratulations, you are very good teacher. 🇩🇴
Thank you! 😃
Thank you so much for such a good staff in your channel! Very interesting. I have a question? Which app do you use for creating videos with screencast and cam at the same time?
I’ve been using excel the way you use tables on google docs. It makes sharing clunky, plus excel is too complicated for newbies using text in tables.
Love your videos!
As an academic, the explore feature is something I will try out. Also the history feature is useful not only for kids but also adults
Very helpful. Thanks👍
Glad it was helpful!
I'd add the translation function to the list of really useful features.
Thank you!
thanks for the video
Omg ! Merging cells . I didnt know how to do this b4 your video Steve . Ive been deleting or changing color . 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. So enlightening as always . Thank you
Wonderful!
This was an awesome video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Great and fantastic delivery! Btw, what screen recording software do you use? And how do you get the special frame you used in the beginning for your head and used all throughout? Thanks again.
Optical character recognition!
I created some camera shots out of a book, and went in to manually type the text below the JPG in the document, and Google Doc just did it automatically!
Commenting is a really great feature indeed!
Best information ever
Steve, would you please advise me what Google product would work best for creating a ( Home Inventory)? I love Google Photos, But I’am at a loss on which Google program to use for a home inventory. Your insight’s in regards to Google products is simply amazing.
Thank You.
I often use the Word Search Feature in my data base of notes to find notes and documents I have taken at different times.
awesome!!😉❣
Google docs is okay but I use open office more
Great video Steve
Thank u
Very useful information. When you were talking about substitutions you went too fast for me to follow on how (where to go); file then preference. I got it by rewinding. thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Peter Powell -Just discovered your Web Site! Very interesting.
Question- where can I find your Explore segment in Word 8, on the latest MS Word version?
Re. Substitution - is there a way of specifying title capitalisation so acronyms can be automatically written out in full?
I love using voice typing or dictation. But, I never knew that you can say NEW PARAGRAPH. Another feature that would be nice to have is the ability to add more fonts. Why limit it to just Comic Sans?
...Unfortunately voice typing only works if you have Chrome.
Yes 🕹🕹🕹🕹so true awseome 🌟🌟🌟🌟👏👏⭐️⭐️🎉🥇
Coolest features, my foot. Forced to save DOC as DOCX, despite the fact that Microsoft Word itself has no problem with saving in DOC format. And all publishers accept submissions in either format. It's a typical example of big brother Google knowing what's best for us.
That is great. I am wondering if you could make another video for advance users. I am trying to generate a document template and insert “variable” field in it, for example [firstName]. Then every time I make a new document of this template, I could substitute the variable with a name. Could you possibly help me?
Great suggestion!
Very useful tips: thank you.
Rather looking forward to the demise in the current vogue for microphones that fill half the screen 😜😂👍🏻
Steve, could you explain how to use Google Docs for Creating a
(Home Inventory) ? I’ve heard that Google Docs is a simpler way to categorize everything in my house and Add pictures.
Any help would be much appreciated.
More Google Docs features, please,
Good afternoon Sir, i have a question to ask. How do I edit a real estate contract in Google Docs, I have looked oer all the videos and can not find anything on it. I have Microsoft office, but I would rather just use Google Docs to gain space on my Laptop. If you can help thank you , and your videos are extreemly helpful, Thank you!
Steve, it appears the Explore option is missing under Tools now? Did they remove it?
I too have occasionally deleted the content of a whole file inadvertently. When that happens I have usually been able to recover it with ctrl-Z (undo)
Im amazed on how Human Auto Typer by undetectable ai works in google docs cuz its been writting my content manually like a human
how come when i try and add a footnote only the small number appears on mine like a little 1 or little 2 but with yours when you insert a footnote by clicking the quotation marks you get a little 1 plus a link in smaller font plus a title in smaller font plus the date? Pretty much you get everything and mine only adds a number? how come?
I've been annoyed by styles for years. At 5:00 in you assigned heading 1 to a section that was already bolded. The heading 1 style is not bolded in the template but stayed bolded when you applied it! This is annoying if you want actual consistency. MS Word used to do similar annoying things like this.
Love these features. My faith in google is growing.
This is great! Thank you! ~ If I use Google Docs and email the document to a person who uses Microsoft Word only, will it be compatible and open properly?
You can save a file in .doc or word format
Steve, my version of google docs does not have explorer as a choice??
I don't seem to have the Explore feature
😕 there's no explorer in my tools menu just citations then linked objects
ASUS Chromebook, up to date
many of my favorite youtubers are from canada. I can tell by how they say aboot. which begs the question why are so many youtubers from canada?
Long winters
Are these features available on Android or is just on PC?
Google docs is an app that is web based. If you can view a browser you can use it. I have apple stuff and my kid uses pc. We can collaborate on our computers or phones.
It' s really a pity that all these awesome features are not available on mobile devices, especially on Ipad pro (used with magic keyboard) :(
Too bad you can't use google docs to teach you count...after 7 is 8 DearDotto jajajaja thanx for the amazing info tho "huge fan here"
I like Google Docs is as good as Microsoft word as far as I am concerned
1
Why would I want to do all this on Google but I can do it on my computer using Excel and Microsoft word?
Why indeed! But not everyone wants to pay for Microsoft products.
It’s free.
Voice typing is one shortcut that robs you of your powers of written expression. This is largely because your writing vocabulary is vastly superior to your speaking vocabulary.
Ooops forgot to turn off Ads Block, one of few channels I turn it off for.
I appreciate that!
Google has been allowed to copy whole books, the books that authors have written and hold the copyrights on. There is NO WAY I WILL EVER AUTHOR a full document on Google docs! FULL STOP!
Spatchcock a chicken? Are you TRYING to get demonetized?
Or worse, de-spatchcocked.
Gasp, never thought of that!
yall are npcs
Explore is definitely a plus for academic
