You can literally do ALL of the maintenance yourself on the C8 Corvette transmission without any special tools. NO FLUSH is necessary! 👍👍
The DCT cannister cover has very low torque spec screws. Inch pounds... beware!
I chose to do it at the dealer because I want a proven paper trail.
Thank you for the informative video. I never received the notice from GM on my 2024C8, it just goes along proving everything I’ve experienced with the dealership and GM has been horrible, at least the transmission hasn’t broken “YET “
The part that bugs me is: this is NOT written in the manual. The part about if you changed the canister before 7,500 miles, that it must be done again at 8,000 miles. It’s not in the paper manual, nor the digital manual online or the digital manual in the Chevy app.
The first and ONLY place I saw that, was the letter that came out. It’s not in the maintenance schedule or even asterisked in the notes of the maintenance schedule.
So them to threaten to void my warranty, they would have a fight on their hands.
Justin, here's an item regarding DCT fluid that is related to all this: A C8 owner in my Corvette club participates in the annual open-road race in far west Texas. He had added the "additional two quarts" that he assumed would help safeguard his DCT, but in this case negatively affected his top end. The open road deal isn't really a race but a who-comes-closest-to tim contest where you attempt to get as close to your target time/speed on the multi-mile course. Consequently, there are times when he needs to REALLY fast, like over 170-180. His C8 got bogged down and refused to get him up there when he needed it. Long story short, after close coordination with Corvette engineers, it was determined that because he had the extra two quarts, the DCT fluid in 6th gear was hitting a temperature sensor that made the computer think the whole 11 quarts was over-temperature. Few of us are ever going to drive that fast, but if you plan to, be aware of this condition.
@@brianmcgauley2664 I’m glad I didn’t do the two extra quarts today when I did the trans service. I open road race my C8 Z51 also in Nevada, Silver State Classic.
This is GREAT news! Good information! Thanks HPO for the video!
Thanks for watching!
This is the best C8 UA-cam video for me as it gave me the news that I've got an additional year to get to the 7,500 miles on the clock to by eligible for the free DCT filter change and oil change. I had the wrong date in my head for the expiration of the free service at 11/15/25, which I had calculated as being very difficult to get the correct mileage
in time. I bought the car technically as a used car with 268 miles from a Chevrolet dealer an hour away from me. There was a dispute with the original owner over paint work on the car that went on for months. I took delivery Oct. 2, 2024, 11 months after the original in service date.
The detailed info in this video on when to do the DCT filter and when mileage wise is very specific and the inclusion of the GM letter is assuring. What is a concern is that I did not get that letter in the mail. I will confirm that my coverage for that free service does apply to a "SLIGHTLY" used car for sure- from GM/Chevrolet.

Just rolled over 7k miles. Probably going to put 200-300 more miles and I’m going in for my first oil change. Thanks for the info
You’re very welcome!
Well Done Justin! Very clear and simplified unlike the GM notice that everyone should have received. However I did plan on using my GM reward points to pay for the transmission fluid change at the end of this year for the 3 year change and I was actually looking forward in spending the equivalent of $1,400 (140,000) in the GM reward points on that but now I plan on doing the transmission fluid change myself and now you Justin, yes you are now “forcing me” to now use my GM reward points on more, yes Justin, now on more accessories to get on my car! What kind of friend does this to someone?!? Being able to order more free accessories with my 500,000 GM reward points instead of using about 140,000 GM reward points every 3 years to do the transmission fluid change is no friend of mine. How dare you!!! Ok enough with the drama…YOU ARE THE MAN! And your Z06 stance and mods looked awesome in this video and how it was shot. Take Care and “Stay Obsessed” my friend🤙🏻
Just fyi I’m doing my second trans fluid/filter change at 12,000 miles today. It’s $1400 from dealer !! And that does not include the two extra quarts if you track your C8. If you want that it’s even more expensive because they have to take a bunch of stuff off to get to a plug to do it. Apparently per the dealer it’s not just add two more quarts. It’s more complicated.
Yup. For the older models the extra 2 quarts have to be added from the top of the transmission and that port is behind the air box in the back so all of that has to be removed to do this.
Great info. Confirms what I have thought on the flush procedure. Thanks Justin!
You’re welcome! I always thought the same thing but everybody talking about it online was always saying that if you didn’t have it done it could void your warranty and it just stuck in my head so I’m glad it was finally clarified.
That thing is clean in black ❤
Thank you!
Excellent video with lucid instructions. Love the driving around Western Pa surroundings. Your C8 looks amazing. 🇺🇸
Thank you!!
As we are now in 2025 - it is true the DCT case was changed / redesigned in late 2023 (which goes from 2020 to late 2023 required / markedly suggested to add 2 additional qts / liters of transmission fluid to the DCT IF YOU TRACK YOUR VETTE). After late 2023 to present year, that is no longer suggested). Adding the 2 additional qts is done via the brass plug which is on the top , Right side of the DCT case - which is accessed / available by removing the factory air filter housing. Yes this is time consuming. Or you can have your Service Dealer do the DCT oil drain and fill PROCESS. Please remember this will need to be repeated with every 3 year complete DCT FLUID DRAIN AND FILL. Stay safe, keep on showing your Corvette the Love.
That is true for sure. The redesign of the transmission case made the extra 2 quarts not a necessary thing. An important thing to note is the newer cars do NOT come with an extra 2 quarts, it's just a redesign making the extra 2 quarts not a necessity anymore even for track use.
OK so I watched your video and found it helpful as there has been a lot of confusion on the DCT filter and oil change intervals. My car is a 2023 Corvette C8 Z51 Hypersonic Grey Stingray now with 13860 miles. I am an Automotive Engineer and have used my car for HPDE track days events for the past 2 years. I have done 3-4 Track Days HPDE events at tracks like Road America, Gingerman, Mid-Ohio, Blackhawk Farms, NCM MSP and Barber Motorsports Park. I have done HPDE events with MVP Track Time, Chin Track Days, LAPS Inc, NCM and the Porsche Club.
If you are going to track your C8, Chevrolet and GM recommends that you add 2 extra liters of trans oil to your car. I had my dealer at the time do this on my C8 before my first track event. This procedure is very involved and expensive at like $300.00 or more. I have had my DCT filter changed twice per the prescribed interval and mileage per the Chevrolet letter you mentioned.
Just keep in mind that if you are replacing the trans oil at 3 years at a minimum that this it is not a simple drain and replace as you mentioned in your video! If you have added the extra 2 liters of trans oil when tracking your C8 you have to replace the extra 2 liters of trans oil as well. Just another example of how GM and Chevrolot could have designed this vehicle to be able to do the routine maintenance easier either at the dealer or DIY. It's a great car especially if you take to the track!! Cheers
Correct. That extra 2 quarts will have to be re-added if you change your transmission fluid. I meant it more as there is no FLUSHING that needs to happen so it is just a simple drain and fill (even though some will have to add those 2 extra quarts).
@@HorsePowerObsessed Thanks for the clarification. I had the flush procedure done at the dealer before I had the second filter replaced at 7115 miles because I track the car. I wanted to make sure I got the contaminates in the filter before it was replaced. It cost $180.00 to have that procedure done!! Belts and suspenders I guess.
This makes me feel better looking at used 2023s that were coming up on the 2 year mark, now I have the B2B warranty AND another year to get to 7500 on the models that I had saved around 3500-4500 miles. 😮💨
I did my DCT filter change on my Z06 at 2800 miles past week at Ciocca. Gonna do it every 3k because I track it and stick to “maintenance “ schedule.
That's about what I'm going to do too!
Justin, your video shows a Z06 on the lift with a floor jack under it. I believe this to be a common practice at the servicing GM dealer. Technicians will lift the back (or maybe front) because the lift arms are to high to swing under the vehicle to contact the correct lifting points. Owners beware for damage to their vehicles underbody aluminum plate from the lifting pad on the floor jack. Most of the floor jacks I have seen at a GM dealer, the metal pad has four teeth sticking up that bents this aluminum plate. This occurred to my C8 when I brought it in for service.
My guy does it right. The jack is placed correctly in the jack itself has a rubber pad on it to make sure nothing gets messed up
Fantastic information on the C-8 Corvette.
Happy to help!
I have a 2023 Stingray HTC. I will not have 7500 miles before the 3 yr mandatory transmission oil change. 1. Does the 3 yr first free service only start with 2024? I assume so.
2. If I do the transmission oil change at 3 yrs and say I have 5000 miles and replaced the canister filter with the free service then again with the complete oil exchange, I still have to do the canister again between 7-8 thousand miles. Seems like overkill!
P.s. I go to Greg at Cochran Chevrolet also! He’s a fantastic Corvette tech!
The BEST Corvette tech I've ever used! I drive over an hour and pass 4 other Chevrolet dealerships to get to him!
The 3 year maintenance plan did start with the 2024s, I'm not sure if it is retroactive though. As far as the full fluid change and filter change question, that's a good one. I'll have to look into that a bit more and see what they say but if I had to guess... They're going to want that filter changed again by 8k miles regardless.
Thank You!
Great information, as always! Thank you , very much appreciated , Justin!🙏👍👏👌
My pleasure!
Nice Maintenance Video.
Chuck, the Technician with Rick Conte said late 2023 onwards GM made the transmission case larger to hold more fluid. This is what I heard.
The z06 and late 2023s don’t need the extra 2 quarts anymore because of a case redesign but it does not hold more fluid.
Great info. Thanks HPO
Any time!
I took my car in for service in November and they changed my oil and I only have 4500 miles on mine, so I'm gonna call to see if they also changed the trans filter and they didn't it's better be free when I take it for the first time.
I don't think something is "set to breakdown" at 7500 miles. The real issue is that if you do it BEFORE 7000 miles, then it will be too long by the time it comes time to do it again at 22,500 miles. For example, you change it at 1500 miles and figure you're good at 7500 because you did it already. Now it means that instead of going on 15,000 miles between changes, if you perform the service at the suggested time, you've gone 21,000 miles -- which is too long. Basically, change the filter every 15k miles with the exception of the first one that needs to be done at half that time.
I certainly don't know for sure, but I'm guessing this is just basically to keep the math easy for people. Personally, I plan on cutting every single interval in half for longevity and doing it twice as often for the lifetime of the vehicle.
I would definitely do it earlier than suggested by GM because like I said, you can't change a filter TOO often. With that said, I still think something is happening that is timed specifically by 8k miles. Otherwise, why not go with the 22,500 from the very beginning? Break in material is definitely going to pollute the fluid early and they want it out of there asap but if you change the filter too early, you aren't getting it all out.
@@HorsePowerObsessed Possibly. I'm trying to remember where I heard what I did, and I swear it was from a video with a GM engineer; but I could be mistaken... that the first 7500 miles releases more break in garbage caught in the filter and after that, it slows down. Regardless, like you said, just change it early and often and it's not an issue. I hate wasting money on expensive filters, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than an entire new DCT.
Many thanks, super update.
Thank YOU!
Always Good to know this information.. Thank you 🙏...
You’re very welcome!
Great info Justin, thx
My pleasure!
Thanks Justin for a informative video
You're quite welcome.
Video was very informative, thanks . However, the one thing that is never addressed is the DCT internal filter. Does it ever need replaced?
No. It's labeled as a "lifetime filter" in the manual.
@HorsePowerObsessed Could you please tell which manual you are referencing and page?
There are inexpensive ($160) diagnostic code readers out there that can do the flush routine. I choose to do it with every DCT filter or fluid change. Easy to document with photos, video, and receipts.
I’ve seen them but at the end of the day as long as you drive your car it’s a pointless step. I just wanted people to know that you don’t have to do it even if you don’t have a cheap diagnostic tool you can still get it done yourself.
@ DCT very expensive to replace. I’d rather do the flush and spend more $ on Carbon Fiber parts such as the frunk carbon set I just purchased though your channel 👍
Justin, I had asked this question before, it wasn't answered, and now that text has disappeared, so I'll ask again. You stated that the DCT filter replacement first included at no additioal charge during the fist year had previously be extended to two years. Correct. You then said they had finally extended the "free" period to THREE years, which would be great, but I see nothing from GM on that, nor has my dealer. Where did you get that info? The DCT filter change ain't cheap, and I'm just a few weeks away from having to do it, so I need to know the support for that. Thanks.
It was announced this past year at the Bash. You can see more here: www.corvetteblogger.com/2024/11/20/gm-really-wants-you-to-follow-the-maintenance-schedule-for-your-c8-corvettes-transmission/
@@HorsePowerObsessed I have a '22 with just shy of 7,000 and approaching its third anniversary. Two different dealers have confirmed that IF I had reached the required 7,000 miles BEFORE 24 months after delivery, a DCT filter replacement WOULD have been included, but the limit is 24 months, so I will have to pay for it myself. I received that letter from GM, and understand it, but I don't see anywhere in it where they change that 24 month period to 36 months. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it. The service bulletin referenced is for 2024 C8s, so that does apply to earlier cars at all.
Hi Justin, just a quick question. What if I don’t put 7500-8000 miles on the car by 3 yrs? Can I still get the free oil change and duct filter change done? I’m aware now thanks to you, that I will have to pay for the drain and fill for new Transmission oil bc of the 3 yr mark. But can I get the dct filter and oil change before 8000 miles? My car is a 2024 and I have it now for 13 months.
If you wait past that 3 year mark it is unlikely they'd still do it for free. I would go as close to that date as possible and get it done for free but then make sure you do it again before 8k miles to maintain that warranty.
Great info Justin! I paid 600 to the dealer to do the filter change and top off!! Too expensive! Now i know I can do myself. My only question is in changing the fluid , after drain old fluid and re fill with new do you have to do the procedure of putting in drive for the specified time and reverse too. Can you just drive like normal after you replace the transmission fluid.
For those of us that added 2 extra quarts, for tracking the car, every time we change the filter we lose fluid. And everyone knows adding the two extra quarts is a PITA, and you never really know how much is in there once you fill above the normal fill line. I love the car, but this particular issue is annoying. First world problem for sure.
I think this is the biggest reason GM redesigned the case of the transmission on the newer cars. It is a giant pain in the butt to get that extra fluid in.
It’s clean in all colors
I have a 2022 with 4,500 miles that I purchased in 2021 in December. That puts me 3 years and 2 months. Am I not covered?
Probably not, but talk to your local dealership to see if they'll make an exception. Some probably will.
I have a 2021 C8 and had the DCT fluid and filter changed at 6000 miles. I was planning on having it changed again at 22,500 miles. I am at 21,500 miles now and recently got this letter which means I am way overdue. I've scheduled it for this coming week. Am I screwed?
Awesome video! I just picked up my 2025 C8. So my first maintenance should be oil+filter at 5k km and then transmission filter at 7500 miles? Thanks
Personally, I'd do them both earlier than that and then again at 7,500 but if you want to follow the manual to a T then you would do both oil and the trans filter at 7,500.
So I'm in a pickle. I'll have had mine for a year come April but i have less than 1500 miles so far. My oil life is like 15%. When i get the oil changed next month, do i change the filter etc also?
You can. It's up to you. IF you do, you'll have to do it again before 8k miles and that will be on your dime at that point.
@HorsePowerObsessed would you recommend I do it with the oil change while I can or just wait? I haven't even driven my Vette too much. 🤔
@KaoMinerva I always recommend doing it more often than not. You can’t replace it TOO often.
@@HorsePowerObsessed I'll do it next week... YOLO. Peep this... I also found C8 Z06 for 115k and some even lower.
@KaoMinerva dang! That’s crazy!
My transmission just gave out at 6k miles lol. Valve body and rear axle issues
Great video! How hard is it to change the transmission fluid on your own?
Not hard. Just drain and fill assuming you don't have the extra 2 quarts it's super simple.
Has anyone else noticed that the letter from GM references two different filters? The bulk of the letter pertains to the "transmission oil filter" but the last line references the "external cannister filter". The C8 corvette has TWO filters, the external cannister filter AND a filter that is in the transmission and only accessible by removing the transmission oil pan much like a typical automatic.
This letter seems to be addressing the filter that is IN the transmission (behind the oil pan) as opposed to the external cannister filter.
>>Just waving the flag of caution here
The internal filter is listed as a lifetime filter. Meaning, unless you have catastrophic transmission failure you would never have to replace that filter so the filter referenced the entire time is that canister filter.
Exactly my question as well. That greatly increases the work to change the internal pan filter.
That first oil change for the engine is CRAZY. 500 miles or 1K max should be mandatory for any factory warranty
Ever had a car that says do that?
Totally agree. I did mine at 2k and that was 1k later than I wanted to.
C7 Corvette did.
@@HorsePowerObsessed Prob cuz it wasn't full synth mobile-1 supercar, also wet sump vs dry sump. Okay C7 had a dry sump too, I did not know that.
Where did you hear that GM had extended to three years the "free" initial DCT filter change?
I fkng LOVE this Z! Absolutely perfect.✨
Thank you!!
Please Correct me if I am wrong, the transmission fluid is not free.. They do not pay for the 8+ quarts of DCT transmission fluid..
Correct. You will pay for that.
When you are just changing the DCT filter you loose approximately a max of 6 oz. Of DCT fluid - the DCT fluid should be topped off / replaced. (This fluid / the 6 oz is free with the 1st free DCT FILTER change. Please make sure your service tech replace this fluid (***** unless you have already added the 2 additional qts for tracking. **** it is imperative that you inform your service tech that this was done so they don’t check your level and dump / drain those 2 additional QTs you had filled. )
Where did you get the red head lights? What brand are they?
Right here: www.paragonperf.com/motorsport-c8-corvette-yellow-drl-module-set.html
Well shit.. I bought mine at 18k miles it looks like they never did a filter change, and now it’s at 22k miles.. could my transmission be fucked? Should I do both the transmission filter change and the oil too now? Or just the filter?
What year is it?
There should be a thousand mile service with a oil change
I agree. I did mine at 2k first.
Where is everyone buying their DCT filters for DIYers? I have a ‘24 Z06 and I see prices for OEM filters all over the place with matching part numbers. Photos have 3 bolts and some with 4 bolts. What are you guys paying for your GM filters?
What does actually the 3 year DTC maintenance consist of? I have heard that you supposed to replace the internal filter inside the transmission also, any comments on this?
The three-year maintenance is an oil change, oil filter change, and transmission filter change.
I have not seen anything saying that the internal filter should be changed unless the transmission is heavily compromised, meaning you shredded some gears or something. All of the literature from GM states that that is a lifetime filter.
Thank you very much for your help and information, I own a 2022 sting Ray which just run out of warranty in December for the 3 years, unfortunately I live in a town in Wyoming where I don’t trust the mechanics that work in the chevy dealership, so I have to make an appointment in another city where they have more experience on this cars, but because of the weather I had to cancel my appointment, but as soon as I can I will get it done, but they told me that they need to replace the internal filter also and is going to cost me $1400 for the service, what do you think about this? Thank you so much
Justin, I'm still a little confused. I picked up my Z06/Z07 on 23Oct2023.....so is my 1st service before the 2 yrs mark (23Oct2025) or is 1st service between 7500 and 8000 miles...I only have 3500 miles as I write this to you. .....I did do an oil change in Aug 2024.....I have one more question? I saw that Brandon Garage cut an access hole where the transmission drain plug and filter is, but he put a door panel that open and close with a screw driver. Is that something that you might do? I'm thinking about just cutting out an access hole like the oil filter and oil drain plug have. What Say You. Please write back.
Technically first service is to be done before 8,000 miles BUT I wouldn't wait that long personally. I would do the first oil change and trans filter change around 2k miles and then again at 8k just to maintain GM's warranty.
I will be adding that door to my car eventually when the weather warms up!
Thanks Justin, I'll be looking out for the transmission door install.
How would you know if the car was serviced correctly if you bought it used and it has over 7000 miles on it. And if it’s under 7000 do you still get the free service?
GM will have a record of whether or not that maintenance was done on that Vin. If it wasn’t done and you’re within that three-year period then yes you’d still be covered for free.
@@HorsePowerObsessed if the car had over 8000 miles on it And you can’t verify it or it wasn’t done, should you stay away from it Because GM won’t warrantee it?
I have a 2023 Jan 16 delivered and they say this is only a 2 year free timeline. I can't find this info but have the new letter. Currently at 5% and 7300miles so can't drive it as I wait for other warrantied items through corporate. Where is the 3yr info?
What are they doing with the floor jack ?
The car is too low to get on the lift that they have so they use a floor jack to get it up in the air a little bit
C8 Corvette has been out for 5 years and still owners are confused on the tranmission service you would hope that the salesperson would explain this in detail before leaving the lot and the responsibility also falls on the owners for not reading their owners manual.
The manual doesn't disclose everything we talked about here today and unfortunately, the salesman often have no better idea than the buyer.
@HorsePowerObsessed didn't know that about the manual thanks for clearing that up and your correct about the sales personnel most know little about the product they sell there are a few that are exceptional at what they do.
Agreed! I wish there were more!!
The flush confusion is GM's fault:
1) Most people think of a tranny flush as something totally different. Should have called it "Filter flow procedure" or some crap. Not a FLUSH.
2) The actual tech procedures for replacing the DCT cannister filter literally start with performing the flush procedure, so this made everyone freak out because:
a) some dealers were saying there was no flush procedure (when there was, and its in the service manual!)
b) some were charging extra for this (dealer scum)
c) some people were speculating that DCT's were failing because filters were replaced, but flush procedure wasn't followed because of A above.
d) P-car owners like to troll the corvette forums and spread FUD because its fun
I saw a while back where the GM engineers stated this procedure is normally occuring while driving the car periodically when conditions are correct, so it's really a moot issue at this point.
Unfortunately, not everyone knows that this procedure occurs normally when driving. In fact, I'd say 90%+ don't know that. That's the biggest reason I made this video because it is ALL over the forums and people are SURE of the fact that you lose your warranty if you don't do the flush procedure first but as we stated here, that is incorrect.
Should i be worried about buying a used 2020 c8?
you'd def want a warranty after I think...october? I have a 2020 and my trans went out at 8600. I had it replaced and extended the warranty after getting a master-tech to look at it (costs 350) but I am now good for 48,000\4 yrs for basically everything.
@@mrmrsmeowmeow9045 8600 is insane!
first thing to do: Buy a manual vette
You never addressed something important. I will do the transmission fluid in 3 years but (not addressed) is ir required each 3 years subsequent or a one time deal. I have never changed transmission fluid mission fluid in any car?
Yup. Every 45k or 3 years. Next would be 90k miles or another 3 years and so on.
What is the cost to do the trans flush
The flush procedure we're talking about here is free, it's part of the filter change. If you're referring to actually changing all of the fluid in the transmission, it is NOT a flush procedure. It would be a simple drain and fill but the fluid is pricey. The fluid itself is roughly $40 a quart and you need 11 or so quarts.
I might buy a c8 zr1
I might, too!
Hi does this apply also on a C7 Corvette Grand Sport? I have the automatic 2019 model with 16 000 km, when do I need to change the transmission oil and filter? Thanks ! Anyone who has the info, please reply back.
This is not the same for the C7.
@HorsePowerObsessed I see okay. Any clue for the C7 when I need to change the filter and fluid for the transmission?
Are you going to consider the ERay?
No. The Z06 is the superior car in my opinion... With that said... A ZR1 might be on the horizon!
2!!🔥
Make them video tape the service of your transmission for the price they charge you better make sure they're actually doing every step they make you show proof make them show proof
The Trans is about $16.000 GM Cost good Luck!!!!
Why good luck? This is everything you need to know on how to avoid that lol
It won’t last forever and when the warranty is done and it breaks so will your wallet
I wonder if you’re not a DIY’er and you go to the dealer for the DCT filter change (after your free one was used up) if the flush is extra or just included in the cost of the service. Hopefully it’s included because I could see some real potential dealer service scams.
I would have to assume it is included because it isn't listed on the paperwork when they do the filter change.
But but but how to save money on a $100k sports car 😂😂😂
Why am I seeing two wings on your Z06? @04:37 mim.
2 wings? What do you mean?
@HorsePowerObsessed @04:37 min. Looks like a low wing & you're high wing.
It's a rip-off for the prices they charge for those Services you could get an extended warranty and save Chevy money and save yourself money but they're freaking idiots and they just want to rip you off and make you pay for everybody's broken Transmissions
Not everyone has a car lift bridge like you, so the majority customers will go to their GM dealership to change the oil and filter transmission .
And you’re totally free to do so! 👍👍
Autos suck. Only reason I wouldnt own a C8 . My C7 M7 is flawless
Rawr I like to row through gears and be a second + slower, rawrrrrr

Good stuff Justin keeping the community well informed, allowing DYI folks like us to save and avoid dealership fees on simple oil changes.
