As an older white woman (who is unfortunately named Karen lol), I feel safer around black men than white men in public exactly *because* of what he said. I used to work nights, and whenever I was heading to my car parked on the street, if a black man walked by or rode his bike past me, he would almost always say, "good evening" in a loud, almost cheerful, non-threatening voice, as if to say "please don't be alarmed; you have no reason to fear me just because I'm black." Everything about their tone and body language indicated they were trying very hard to let me know they were not a threat. It broke my heart, actually, that black men have to even worry about this (not to mention potentially being murdered by cops.) I don't blame black men for being wary or even fearful of white women. I cannot imagine what it must be like to live with the uncertainty of knowing whether or not the next person you encounter is going to profile you, react to you in fear, and/or falsely accuse you of something because of the color of your skin. And my not knowing what that's like is called white privilege (for those racist morons who claim white privilege doesn't exist.)
