Plus Batman Forever was a genuine hit, making nearly as much as the original film. The Supergirl/Catwoman thing is a good spot, tho. Never noticed that.

One of the scenes that I really disliked in Superman 4 was when Lex Luthor impersonated a USAF 5 Star General to command a missile launching! Even for a fictional movie, that just doesn't work. The 5 star general rank (although still listed for use) has not been used actively since the 1950s. There has only been ONE USAF 5 star general ever in USA history, and General Henry Arnold started as US Army general before being made the commanding USAF general. Thus, the USA Armed Forces would clearly KNOW if they had a new 5 star general. And ANY nuclear missile launch still has to be cleared by the President. So Luthor impersonating a USAF 5 star general is not just unreal and impossible, it doesn't even make sense. Hence, that scene cost the movie another minus 10 points out of a 100 score.

Sad times, huh? 😢 BTW, the mostly unanticipated movie came already Joker 2 and now, it TANKED the box office already. The joke’s on WB and David Z, too. Yikes.
I remember seeing this in the theaters as a 6 year old. At the time I was so young that I didn't notice how "bad" it was, and even to this day, it's a film of my childhood and my brother and I LOVED the Superman movies, so despite the fact that I can see all these things NOW, I honestly don't care. To me it's still an enjoyable watch and while not as good as the first 2, I've seen WAY worse and to this day this is still a fun movie for me ❤
This was the first movie that I ever walked out on in a movie theater. It is absolutely awful! And I felt so bad for Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman (as well as Margot Kidder and Jackie Cooper) for actually being in this colossal catastrophe of a so-called movie. I blame penny-pinching Israeli cheapskate producers Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan (of Cannon fame) for ultimately ruining the Superman franchise at this point. This film can’t hold a flame to the prestigious majesty of a classic that is Richard Donner’s “Superman The Movie.”
When I saw Superman 4 as a kid in the 80’s, I knew it wasn’t as good as the others, but I was 10 or 11 years old, so I didn’t fully grasp how bad it was. I tried to watch it recently, and it’s legitimately one of the worst things I’ve ever seen.
First time i saw Christopher Reeve in a film was in Gray Lady Down. He was young in that, Superman films were ok. Wish he was around now to stop all these bloody wars.
Superman 3 was way worse, it was more of a Leslie Nielsen film then anything else. 4 had its issues do to Cannon Group screwing over not only Christopher Reeve's story, but his passion project. Still, despite its flaws I enjoyed and Nuclear Man is my all time favorite Superman villain. Sure he had a horrible weakness, but without it Supes would never have been able to beat him. And as far as I know Nuclear Man is the only live action villain to beat arguably the strongest Supes twice alone. First time nearly killing him, and he was just having fun and if it wasn't for that crystal he'd be dead. The second time, he buried Supes alive in the freaking Moon. I really hope they release a remastered version one.
I actually enjoyed IV a lot. I was/am also a big Cannon film fan. Yep, I am one of those guys that actually likes bad movies. Some things I am over when it comes to a DC film. I am over watching Batman's parents getting killed every movie and I am over Zod. IV had a whacky premise, some fun humor and cool fights. I have watched it many times over the combined total of the other three. Cheers.
I remember dragging my mom to this when I was a little kid on opening day. I'm pretty sure we were the only people in the theater. I didn't hate it back then, as I was just happy to see a Superman movie in a theater. But after seeing it again as a teenager, I could not wrap my head around how terrible the whole thing was. Learning about how Cannon basically blew through most of their money on Masters of the Universe (an equally terrible film), it's no wonder A Quest for Peace was doomed to fail. I don't think it would have been a good movie, had the budget not been halved, but it might have had a chance of being tolerable. As is, it's a "so bad, you might chuckle a few times" kind of movie. At least Christopher Reeve was still the best Superman, even in the worst possible movie.
I met Mark Pillow (Nuclear Man) and he was very nice. I will say that while the movie doesn’t work as a whole the awkward fights are very entertaining.
Clive Mantle came to my school when I was very young and he was known for being a doctor in Casualty. He said he was in this movie but I must have missed that his role was cut and for years I was confused when I saw Nuclear Man and thought “that doesn’t look anything like Clive” When I saw the deleted scenes I was surprised that he even brought it up.
Here's a hot take: the premise of Superman IV was awesome: a paternalistic Superman doing what the world needed and a worthy foe to fight. The script erred by not having the world be more divided on Superman's actions.
I'm going to have to hold the phone here and say that Superman 5, if it came out as conceived could've had the chance to be the best of the series, the Salkinds would've returned to the series, and it would've featured brainac. Now if it was done correctly it could've been one of the best comebacks ever in film history.
What did in Superman IV? 1. Slashed budget. 2. Not using a different villain from the source material. Lex Luthor teaming with another villain? Ok, but no Parasite, Bizarro, Metallo, Toyman, Prankster or... Brainiac? 3. No attention to detail, most evident in visuals. 4. Rehashing some stuff from the 1st 2 movies. 5. Nuclear Man lands in Metropolis to capture Lacy, Superman confronts him, but lets him start messing things up!?!? And pleads with a retread line from Superman II!??!? However, this IS the Superman movie that helped get me into the character (in my defense, the 1st 3 Superman movies were rented out from Blockbuster).
As a kid (76)... I didn't think Superman 3, was bad. Had a liking for Supergirl cheese. But loved Santa Claus, the Movie. Never cared for Superman 4, at all. Since it was also mentioned, I loved Ninja 3 too.
Cannon bought Elstree Studios to make money they sold have the studio so Tesco could build store there they had to demolish all the soundstages including the one built for the empire strikes back
@@matthewdaley746 when Stephen Spielberg was making Indiana Jones said in an interview how appalled he was what cannon were doing gutting a great studio
@@denizen53 Haha I like them both pretty well but to each their own. The beauty of art is that we can decide for ourselves what is canon and what is good or bad, and it's all personal. For instance, I don't consider anything Star Wars after 1983 to be legitimate and that's my personal preference.
lol strangely enough, I liked Superman IV...not a lot, but I didn't find it terrible. Then again I was a kid so I liked any kind of movie like this. I must have re-watched it over a dozen times (because we had it on Beta), but re-watching it as an adult, I can better understand where everybody is coming from. As for Canon, I liked Masters of the Universe better now than as a kid. I was severely disappointed in my youth, simply because it missed a lot of what the animated series presented, but I also appreciated how they took it a little more seriously. I hated the fact they went to Earth though...what a lame/cheap approach. Anyway, this is supposed to be about Superman lol...ah well, rest in peace Mr. Reeve. You're still the best Superman.
It definitely has its flaws (which I attribute mostly due to obvious budgetary issues), and admittedly, I notice them A LOT more as an adult than I did as a kid. That said, as a kid (and still now, really), I always saw it as an adequate sequel, and I thought this new villain was actually pretty cool. I definitely liked it better than Supergirl, and to be honest, better than Superman returns. Like, yeah... I'd absolutely watch (and enjoy) IV again before either of those.
I also prefer Superman IV over Superman III with Richard Pryor being annoying and Margot Kidder being replaced by Lana Lang character and the villain sucked
I like Superman 4. It has the theme of getting rid of nuclear weapons. A wiser theme than most films have. Many nuclear experts (e.g. the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists) say that the risk of nuclear war now is higher than it was during the Cold War.
If they used the correct budget to begin with Superman IV would've been a huge success and Cannon Film just might be in business today. Well it is what it is.
This was the only 1 of the original 4 i went to see at the cinema. As a 6 year old, i loved it. I'll always have fond memories of it. Don't care if it's terrible. Interesting that the reason for the cuts were because of He-Man. Went to see that at the same Cinema and loved that too. Even though it made no sense compared to the cartoon!
Super man 1 is a classic super man 2 great sequel bc it showed that super man had more than one super villain bad guy b4 I will find him zwag there was knee b4 zwag SM 3 was slow with less action so in my opinion dud 💩 and Sm4 I rather not watch jue to public opinion on how bad they say it is super man returns under rated should of been called super man V it was a direct follow up to the last one Brandon Roth really got the part for looking exactly like Christopher Reeve when he’s Clark kent Brandon Roth looks nothing like super man when be comes super man ya know am saying but all and all he did a great job apealing to a new generation including my 12 year old self at the time ❤💙 💛
When I was a kid in the 80's my Dad loved the first Two Superman movies and he didn't even know this movie existed that's how much of a flop it was. When I told him he said I was wrong and I bet him 2 bags of marbles that it was a real movie. I got my marbles and a fairly (even for a kid) mediocre movie rental that weekend.
If 3 and 4 stuck around with a better fleshed out story and polished effects, we would've gotten a fifth movie. Same goes for batman. At least 1 and 2 had major good efforts compared to the latter 2 films!
I was also disappointed with Superman IV. But I still think the scene where Superman tosses the world's nuclear arsenal into the sun was one of the best scenes in cinematic history.
As a kid, Nuclear Man was awesome!
Wasn't he tho? Lol learning this movie actually sucked came as quite a shock to me.
Absolutely agreed! His powers and his lack of impulse control contrasted well with Superman.
Technically Superman Returns is Superman 5. It retcons 3 & 4 but Brandon Routh is suppose to be playing the Christopher Reeve’s Superman.

BTW, the mostly unanticipated movie came already Joker 2 and now, it TANKED the box office already.
To me it's still an enjoyable watch and while not as good as the first 2, I've seen WAY worse and to this day this is still a fun movie for me ❤
This was the only one we had on vhs when I was a kid. No wonder I grew up thinking Superman sucked. 🤦
Between Rocky 4 and Superman 4, y’all got it TWISTED
First time i saw Christopher Reeve in a film was in Gray Lady Down. He was young in that, Superman films were ok. Wish he was around now to stop all these bloody wars.
I hated the space battle. Showed him carrying someone back to earth from way too far out.
If it's any consolation, I effing loved Superman IV as a kid and had to have watched it at least 100 times. Christopher Reeve, may he rest well ❤️🩹
I kind of liked this one. Straight to the point, and it FELT like a Superman movie (unlike the 3rd)
They probs wildo at sompoint
Back then few sequels were of interest, especially after 2. For some reason now, youngsters can watch 10 Spider-Man movies and not be bored.
Cheers.
I still love this movie. My only complaint was that was it, it was short and didnt have more...
I do enjoy all Chris Reeve Superman movies. But it could definitely be fixed with today's tech. And improve the movie.
I met Mark Pillow (Nuclear Man) and he was very nice. I will say that while the movie doesn’t work as a whole the awkward fights are very entertaining.
We’ll wear bloody less clothes then Tina !
Clive Mantle came to my school when I was very young and he was known for being a doctor in Casualty.
He said he was in this movie but I must have missed that his role was cut and for years I was confused when I saw Nuclear Man and thought “that doesn’t look anything like Clive”
When I saw the deleted scenes I was surprised that he even brought it up.
"Cannon has gone down as the company that killed Superman!" This is the one I won't watch. The first three yeah, Part 4... no way.
Bad writing's responsible, unquestionably.
As the dull opening credits started... I was filled with dread at how the movie will run and end...left the theater filled with groans.
Christopher Reeves is a national treasure. He rules the world and will always be the man
Here's a hot take: the premise of Superman IV was awesome: a paternalistic Superman doing what the world needed and a worthy foe to fight.
Featuring Big Lebowski, unquestionably.
Cannon bought Elstree Studios to make money they sold have the studio so Tesco could build store there they had to demolish all the soundstages including the one built for the empire strikes back
Overextension was ruinous, unquestionably.
@@matthewdaley746 when Stephen Spielberg was making Indiana Jones said in an interview how appalled he was what cannon were doing gutting a great studio
@@neiltaylor6645Though, completely, unsurprised, sadly.
Superman IV was no cornier than Superman III. I personally love all 4 movies.
It was lots better than Superman III.
@@denizen53 Haha I like them both pretty well but to each their own. The beauty of art is that we can decide for ourselves what is canon and what is good or bad, and it's all personal.
For instance, I don't consider anything Star Wars after 1983 to be legitimate and that's my personal preference.
I was a kid when IV came out... and I loved it.
lol strangely enough, I liked Superman IV...not a lot, but I didn't find it terrible.
Budgeting apparently is the Quest for Pieces
It definitely has its flaws (which I attribute mostly due to obvious budgetary issues), and admittedly, I notice them A LOT more as an adult than I did as a kid. That said, as a kid (and still now, really), I always saw it as an adequate sequel, and I thought this new villain was actually pretty cool. I definitely liked it better than Supergirl, and to be honest, better than Superman returns. Like, yeah... I'd absolutely watch (and enjoy) IV again before either of those.
I like Superman 4. It's not GOOD, but it's entertaining. Unlike that snooze-fest Superman Returns.
Agree. Superman 4 is that type of bad you can have fun watching.
At least it tries to be fun.
I also prefer Superman IV over Superman III with Richard Pryor being annoying and Margot Kidder being replaced by Lana Lang character and the villain sucked
Superman 4 was AMAZING...LY AWFUL.
I saw it in theaters as a kid and yelled "What the fuck?!"
There is a lost bit of dialogue were Luthor asked Lenny to remember the kryptonite dust coated bolt cutters.
I like Superman 4. It has the theme of getting rid of nuclear weapons. A wiser theme than most films have. Many nuclear experts (e.g. the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists) say that the risk of nuclear war now is higher than it was during the Cold War.
😆
Gets higher for every leftist”elected or appointed“
The 2 speeches he gives were really good, whereas the rest of the movie falls apart
I'd say that risk just jumped about 10x over the past couple days.
This Movie Ruined The Franchise Forever.
This movie nearly killed off the Superman movie franchise
If they used the correct budget to begin with Superman IV would've been a huge success and Cannon Film just might be in business today. Well it is what it is.
This was the only 1 of the original 4 i went to see at the cinema. As a 6 year old, i loved it. I'll always have fond memories of it. Don't care if it's terrible.
Interesting that the reason for the cuts were because of He-Man. Went to see that at the same Cinema and loved that too. Even though it made no sense compared to the cartoon!
Years past due, unquestionably.
Reeves is still my favorite Superman of all time.
This is one of the movies studios should remake.
The structure for the movie isn’t bad.
