yes I think MH as an artist creates a new perspective . it is self contained yet his technique has unlocked the ability to play several parts at once. his choice of chords is very different yet accompanies his voice perfectly
I did have the chance to meet him in 1996. My family rented a house in Mendocino for the Christmas holidays -- and Michael happened to live next door. On Christmas morning, I put on the Halleluia Chorus by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and cranked it up to high volume to wake up the family. Michael later told me he loved it! He was an awesome guy. He was all heart, which you can hear in his music.
At first the crowd laughed because Michael asked them , " is anybody out there" they didn't recognize the song at this point and thought he was addressing them. Michaels spirit lives within me and jams along with me always. The muse we share is strong, the pain is real.
☺"In Oklahoma during my childhood, we were assimilated by the Borg. This is my guitar which has been very drastically tüned.”💜🎶 Michael performs a powerfully moving and faithful cover of the Pink Floyd classic ‘Comfortably Numb’ - especially honoring The Wall tour performance (1980/81). Michael stays true to the ethereal quality of this incredibly sad song. ♡Michael would play this beloved song each night, on this - his last tour. This is his premiere performance. ♡Just for this song, Michael added a 6th bass string to his harp guitar. Michael’s musical arrangement and vocals are gorgeous on this cover. ♡”You can’t play the harp guitar without mentioning Michael Hedges and that he covered this song with a ton of emotion.” The brilliant musical arrangement, haunting guitar solos, ethereal vocals and sweeping lyrics illustrate just why this song is so loved; and why Michael covered it. The music creates Pink’s drifting consciousness and his hazy realization of being spoken to from both outside of his mental wall of isolation and inside the physical one of his hotel room ~ thereby highlighting the separation between the reality of the outside world and Pink’s dream-like inner sanctum.♡ 🤍For his 1997 Fall tour, Michael covers, on his harp guitar, Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd) /The Wall - LP. In terms of concept and story, Tommy actually resembles The Wall more closely. Michael - “i identified with Tommy (rock opera/The Who)-not the mistreatment or trauma, but the sense of isolation.” / Roger Waters, lyricist - The Wall (rock opera/Pink Floyd) - “~ if they feel isolated from other people. The Wall - The rock opera album, released on November 30, 1979, explores the loneliness of a rock singer named Pink - struggling to deal with tragedy in his life. His eventual self-imposed isolation from society forms a mental-emotional wall. Roger Waters: When i wrote it, it was a very personal story mainly about my experience. i surrounded myself because i was frightened, and then consequently it became difficult for me to communicate with people and lead a reasonable life. That’s what the story is. It’s only if we expose our humanity and our frailness to each other that we find ways to become closer.
I got to see Michael Hedges 3 times once with Shadowfax, with Leo Kotteke and once he opened for CSN every show was very different but none the less amazingly wonderful. He was a true innovator.
I was fortunate enough to see him once in 1994. He played in a music store in Chapel Hill, NC with Michael Manring. It wasn't a whole concert, just two or three songs.
There is a certain irony to a guitarist of Michael's stature playing one of the great guitar songs of all time, but bringing the vocals and the feelings to the forefront. @murilonightmare He would do occasional tongue-in-cheek cover songs ("ends in a fit of disco fury"). In this case, I am just as puzzled as you are. The original -- as written, sung, and as it appears in the movie -- is as dark as it gets. Nothing in what Michael is doing suggests he is trying to be funny -- in fact, the opposite. I guess this song has suffered from too much play along beer rock on so-called "classic rock" stations.

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Nod if you can hear me
Is there anybody home?
Come on
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb
Okay
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more, ah
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon
But you are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
But now I turned to look- it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb
mmm-mmm-mmm--oo-oo-oo-oo-mmm
I have become comfortably numb🎸

Every day.
I think they were laughing because Michael was starting into a "Rock Classic©," "Comfortably Numb," which was hardly his stock in trade, and they thought he was being funny, especially with the white lab coat and his "copper pot" wireless mic system. They weren't laughing at the end of the song, by which time Hedges not only absolutely OWNED "Comfortably Numb," but had turned it into a different kind of classic. Check his covers of "Come Together" and "Gimme Shelter" -- spine-chilling!
