I can't thank you enough for posting these, Randy. I had the pleasure of meeting Michael twice, once as a stagehand and got to spend the day with him. Such a genuine person and so gifted. Great to see these performances again. Some of my absolute favorites of his. Cheers! Who knows what he would be writing in 2017. Miss your music, Michael.
I saw Michael for the first time in Ft Lauderdale Florida back in the mid 80s -- by accident. I'd never heard of him before and he was playing at a small music festival. I was standing right in front of him when he played all of these tunes. I can't even describe how it was -- it was one of the most incredible experiences of my musical life. Not only his playing and his energy and how cool he looked with a guitar -- but his SOUND . . . you could feel it in your chest. It was deep, massive, vast sound. I couldn't believe this guy. No one who has not heard him live could EVER know what it was like.
It is wonderful how many people have had revelatory experiences with Michael. Especially powerful for their unexpectedness, their serendipity. Our place was home base for him (He considered himself a fellow employee) in the eighties but the postcards he sent from Florida showed a love for that sunshine state as well. Thanks for sharing!
This man was a guitar in human form, a guitar genius of open tunings. I was grateful I got to see him live at the Count Basie theatre in Red Bank during the 90's This song is my favorite and I continue to listen his music whenever I can
Heartbreakingly good. This song reduced me to tears this morning. I feel like it's finally my turn. I've put myself on the sidelines for too long. For decades, I believed lies I was told about myself, by a sick and abusive parent. I'm done with all that. Time to shine, Thank you Michael. I'm so glad I got to see you play so many times. You enriched my life so much I can't even express it. You frustrated me as a teenager as I foolishly tried to copy you, but when I left that behind I had a special connection to the guitar, because I tried to see it through your eyes for so long. I let my imagined Hedges view merge with my own (both were always mine, of course) and I let go of all the technical stuff only you could do and became myself. But you helped me get there and inform my playing always, even when it's a two hour drone piece. Thank you. I love you. I listened to Watching My Life Go By on MDMA yesterday while lying in bed, doing some much needed deep personal work. Listening to that album while tripping is not for the faint of heart. Face Yourself, indeed.
Hey, I know you wrote this into the vacuum of the internet. Maybe you even forgot you wrote this, but I feel you. I appreciate you taking the time to wrote this. I feel similar, I think
I could always count on Michael coming through New England every spring and every fall, playing places like the Iron Horse in Northampton MA or Raul's Roadside Attraction in Portland, ME. I was lucky enough to catch about a dozen of his shows over the years, watching him grow and change as I did as well. Great memories, each one a blessing.

This makes me so comfortable. Always come back here when I find myself anxious about the future. The part "fear can always frighten up a few disciples but no thing can convert true identity" strikes me in myself again, I don't know exactly why.
Saw him many times at the New Varsity in Palo Alto in 1983-4 and met him later when he was dating my ballet teacher. Wonderful person and player. Lamented.
... Later, when he'd started playing in the big room, I had the privilege of providing the lighting for several of his shows, including this one, along with my partners in Ambient Lighting. Dan Wadleigh ran point on most of these shows with you, as I recall. We also lit a few other live acts there, like the B52s, when you guys were inspired to splurge a little on the production. Those were some mighty fine times! Thanks for making the New Varsity such a wonderful part of history!
Wow, talk about bringing back memories! Thanks so much for uploading all of these wonderful concerts, Randy! I worked at the New Varsity for a while when I was in high school, mostly in the box office but also in the restaraunt a bit. I remember vividly standing in the stairwell every opportunity I could get on days when Michael was playing upstairs, just astounded to hear the music he was making. This was when people were just starting to catch on to the genius in their midst.
so cool to see that rpoland is watching these gems! michael has definitely been a major influence on the candyrat artists, and to anyone who has heard any thing by him. thanks for the post, dude!
Thank you so much for sharing this music. (Can I share it on Face Book?) I love to hear Michael song and play the guitar... Deep, heartfelt and so fun of soul. It touches me very deeply.
His family was calling him home from being out playing or working. I guess that is whom calls anyone home. The callings of life. Ready or not here I come home. Don't be mad at my condition I was only trying to help the family ways to find a way from others within a world as their own. I dunno maybe something subconscious as such.

Ready or Not 🕊lyrics 🕊
Ready or not-here i come
Who shall i say is calling?
Hold the line-don’t hang up
A shutter is opening
And my image is refracting
through wide wild angles of publicity
Ready or not
Tongue and groove
Lose yourself
and wait for your heart to speak
Your only cue-a needle starts to cut
Lasers start tracking
Slow acting acids of industry
As the whole world turns us around
i keep hearing life’s echo sound
Songs of rhyming 🎶
leading, hiding somehow🕊
ready or not
Ready or not-here i come
Naked eyes and naked ears
sighting in - sounding out
Fear can always
frighten up a few disciples
But no thing
can convert a true identity
As the whole world turns us around
i keep hearing life’s echo sound 🎼
Songs of rhyming 🎶
leading, hiding somehow🕊 ready or not 🕊
