  • Take a tour of the Delaware Botanic Gardens, a recently opened (September 2019) 37-acre naturalistic botanic garden focused on environmental stewardship and education. Brian Trader, Director of Horticulture, guides viewers and explains the design, plants used, and the garden's environmental approach. Viewers will experience its meadow, designed by Piet Oudolf and featuring over 70,000 plants, primarily native. The 12-acre hardwood forest is also featured along with plants for the seashore. Learn about perennials, shrubs, and trees that grow in these habitats as the butterflies, bees, and other pollinators nectar in the meadow. In addition to supporting pollinators, this beautiful garden is a hospitable habitat for migrating birds and supports aquatic life on its seashore.

I particularly appreciated the info given about which insects some of the plants support. As I am choosing my plants, I am mindful that moth and butterfly caterpillars in most cases can't eat anything except certain plants (their host plant). Birds need to find insects in order to feed their babies, so I want to make sure I have a lot of good insect habitat.

Wow! I dug up the Miscanthus and killed it in a black plastic bag in the sun all summer. Then I replaced it with Switchgrass. I saw a Carolina Mantis for the first time and had no idea that the Switchgrass may be why. I’m thrilled! Carolina Mantids are smaller and cannot eat the Hummingbirds.

This channel has been invaluable to me. I’m in the suburbs of Philadelphia (on DE/PA border). I have been working hard to learn as I put great things into the ground.

Fabulous video! I want to visit (from Silver Spring, MD). Are the plants identified, I didn't see any signs. I am adding natives to my garden.
