This is great! There are so many “gaming rig” tutorials online, but not nearly as much for art related stuff! I’m definitely going to send this to whoever asks me about computers for animation.
i think that's because really any computer can do it well enough. there are some important features though to talk about, and i'm surprised it doesn't happen very much. like monitor size, color, and resolution. getting a gpu with the right connection type at a low price, and one that can run the right amount of monitors. ssd's, m.2, and features like StoreMi can all be helpful to the experience, and knowing that you don't need a good gpu helps save so much money.

(I completely agree on use of desktop programs, that those wacom tablet pcs are really rough, and that price shouldnt be a barrier of entry for new folks. I just think clean line art is super great and achievable on iPad)
Actually I kind of disagree with them on the iPad bashing. For around $400 you can get an entry level iPad and pencil. And with Procreate, RoughAnimator you have all the tools to get you started. You can add Luma Fusion and Affinity designer for editing and vector assets. I don’t think they are “industry” equipment exactly, but we are talking broke artist here, and this is probably best digital art set up under $500 Adobe suite, Harmony subscriptions aren’t cheap, neither is TVpaint. So for a starving artist a $250 PC set up plus those software that is a constant bill every month. I think you show on your channel that pro work is totally possible on an iPad.
Hmm, 10 bucks once for Procreate, or 21 bucks every month for the rest of your life just for Photoshop. You're spending as much a year on your Adobe subscription as they did here on their budget PC, and the more apps you add the higher that goes. I think I know which one is better on the budget. I personally know professional concept artists working in Procreate for their work product, and they appreciate getting to do stuff on a device they can carry around as they meet with people requesting changes. They don't have to run back to their desk, they just adjust a layer on their iPad in about one second. And it exports .psd files just fine, a client would literally not know you didn't use Photoshop unless you told them, and it can seamlessly replace Photoshop in your workflow. I've done the Wacom Cintiq thing, and it's great. If that's what you want to do, good for you. When I tried out Procreate and the Apple Pencil, I just enjoyed it so much more and work much faster. It's actually noticeably more responsive. The screen is smaller, which is a shame, but very workable. It's funny, I've seen these guys say it's perfectly fine to use a small non-monitor tablet to make professional art, but they bash the iPad which is larger than those other products they say are fine, and much more effective and easy to work with than those tablets. I know tons of professional artists who use Procreate. Maybe they don't use it in Hollywood (I wouldn't know), but there's a big world outside of Hollywood.
Wow, I LOVED this video! My younger sister's looking to start getting into digital art but she's set on getting a laptop rather than a desktop, which I always prefer because of the exact points you made in this video. It was great that you got Taran in the video as well, because I watch LTT all the time and have done so for years so I know how reliable they are. I just started as an art student and the school of art here is *very* reliant on Apple products and basically no one wants to hear otherwise, so they don't realize just how much more they're paying for the logo rather than the hardware. Maybe I'll have to show this video to them and my sister as well to show them why going PC is better for all of this. Great video overall and this definitely deserves as many views as possible.
Get her an Ipad pro. It offers great control and experience being able to draw straight on screen. Also very portable. I get you though with pricing. Potentially check for prepared ones.

Legos for Adults got me so bad! Fantastic video, I've built my own optiplex 3010 into a $200 beast with rx570, 16g ram, atx-mini amd MB, cheap power supply and SSD drive to run a 22inch cintiq. I've been considering going smaller because I have to move soon, but I made this computer the winter of 2019, and doubt I'll find similar performance to it for less than $600. I used to use a laptop with a pen tablet, but I think part of why I got out of art was how bad my wrist got from drawing on my lap. A pen display on an ergotron is everything I've been craving. Great video and really enjoyed it even if it's not new to me.

I grew up in the 80’s, learned about PCs during the monochrome era which was confusing at the time because PCs then were outrageously expensive and I never realized that I’d ever afford one. Fast forward to 2000, the WWW became a trend so I purchased my first PC after the Y2K awareness & ordered a dialup membership from my phone carrier. I had no idea what I was buying, other than I could afford $1200 new, which had both, a floppy disk and cd drives, featuring the newly cd-rw capabilities & included the heavy tube monitor! Since then I’ve been purchasing new after the older ones were either too slow or obsolete. I’ve learned more about PCs watching this video than I have ever, in my life. I’ve never knew about the internals & their functions until now. Now I feel confident enough to swap out the internals with just the right upgrades, instead of buying new & overly priced. This has definitely expanded my rustic old brain cells which has earned my subscription! Thank you!
I am literally in the process of getting a desktop computer to work from home and this video showed up right on time, this was a perfectly timed upload, thanks as always guys
As both an art hobbyist and a computer software engineer, this video hits a wonderful sweet spot. One of these days I'm gonna try and create a build for art and programming so I can try and make video games.
Omg this video was so informative and great! I suffered from Desktop failure and lost SO MUCH of my content...as crappy as it was, it is like a breath of fresh air because now I can legit, start over with a clean slate. And with that, improve my hardware. I am constantly working on stuff for my art, Comics, illustrations and at some point id like to get into small time animation. But my budget is not so friendly considering we are still in a pandemic. This really helped break down what I would need, can get away with in a desktop and see how customizable it is so later down the line I can upgrade the sides with ease! So seriously, thank you so much for this video!
Bruh, I took a semi-professional animation class in a CTE and I am a lifelong computer geek. I've never before seen someone explain computers so concisely without sacrificing important details. Details where if most people who don't know them, they will jump to bad conclusions about different parts. *WOW! WOWOWOWOWOW!!*
This video might be the best intro to PCs in general, not only for artists and deserves to have millions of veiws! I'm a game programmer learning how to draw and I actually have an overkill PC, but I was curious about your advice and the quality of this video surprised me, I'm sharing this with everyone who needs it. Thank you!
This whole channel is not supposed to be about computers: they successfully explained the lowdown on buying computers, simply, entertainingly, accurately, so well that I'm going to be sending this video to my computer science students. Great stuff.
i love this channel so much. two very talented passionate dudes giving great and helpful advice with top notch production value. really appreciate you guys. keep up the great work. learned so much through the years.
Isn't it weird when you find a great video and there's dislikes.... why!? What's there to hate? Stop it, BAM is amazing! I recently started a new career cause of them!
I made notes on this video and am so grateful you made it. It has been difficult to figure out how to set my son up with a budget but quality set up. Thank you! Thank you!
I can see that the time it took really improved the quality of the videos, thank you for all the effort you put in the knowledge is invaluable to learning artists
I took a course on the basics of computer science three times in college (failed the first two times) and ya'll did a better job explaining things in first three minutes and I'm angry.
Wow, this video is amazing for beginners and users alike, I do believe I understand a fair bit about computers but the explanations made here are so compact and quick to grasp that even I feel like I learned something new. But thing is, and that's just my personal opinion and keep in mind I'm in no way a professional, so while having a full computer with a graphics tablet may be a better option on the long run and for professionals, I do feel that for beginners and hobbyists the iPad is still a better option, you get a more versatile and compact device that doesn't have all of the loops of a full computer, you won't have to worry about drivers and big bulky software and it's a lot less prone to becoming cluttered on the long run, it feels like a safer bet... but then again for someone who plans on going professional a computer is definitely the better option, in this case it's more versatile for professional and high end tasks instead of portability and other use scenarios. Another thing, I have a graphics tablet and started learning using it, and I gotta say, that with photoshop feels like such a daunting and scary task it felt to me like something a little too professional for my skill level, but that might just be me. Also guys you don't need an iPad Pro for art at all, the base iPad will do just fine with the 1st gen Apple Pencil, it costs like 430 bucks.
I know *many* professional artists working on Procreate, including concept artists. They may not use it for animated television shows in Hollywood (I wouldn't know, but that seems to be what they're claiming here), but it's a big world out there and companies need a lot of art.
People just starting in Animation today have the BEST tools! I had a PC, Photoshop, and a Wacom tablet in the early 2000's, and considered it a privilege. But all that was kinda expensive.
Dude the funny thing is that I was watching this as I was doing school and I think i learned more from a video then hours of someone talking about really nothing. Also thx for making these videos I’ve been trying to make a cartoon but you know everyone has a budget so thanks.
I might have a decent setup for art in terms of specs but you made me far more aware about the desk! i really need an upgrade for the desk and chair i use, haha. no wonder my back hurts so much
This is a GEM of a video to send to some peeps that come asking the tech geek what computer to buy on their budget. It needs spanish subs, so if I can contribute to that please let me know. Explaining ALL this to the person that asked me what to buy was taking a really long time so I'm really grateful that you put this together. Thank you!
I would recommend people to get an SSD instead of an harddrive if possible. It is significantly faster and has a lower chance of breaking. Also Huion and XP-Pen can give you more bang for your buck if it comes to drawing tablets then expensive Wacoms. Edit:: turns out they mention this later in the video aswell 😅
When i searched up the ipad with the pen bc I was a bit jelly of the procreate users, I saw that price and just decided that saving for a computer and huion for animation/art is much better
As a new artist and lifelong PC building gamer this was a very informative video for beginners. I knew I personally wouldn't get anything out of it but I still wanted to see what you guys had to say and I'm glad I did. I wish I had this video 15 years ago when I was trying to build my first PC. 💜
Oh my god. I’ve been watching videos on this all day and I haven’t found a video that made sense for me. You guys explained it in such a simple way. Thank you I feel so encouraged now because of the clarity. The hope is building up now😂 before all this research I knew nothing about tech. Still don’t know much but this made it easier.
Pro tip... A digital artist's best friends are good reliable hard-drives... You can cheap out on anything... Except the hard-drive. It's literally ur vault. Also make sure to have at least 2 hard-drives as backup...
I just wanted to say-this video was INSANELY helpful. I learned so so so much in the duration of one video, and now I know so much more about PCs and digital art than I have ever known before. Thank you!
I wish I had seen this 4 years ago when I first wanted to build a computer for digital drawing--but I had no idea where to start! I had NO tech knowledge whatsoever, and eveything online was gaming/more programming related. Thanks for making this! I wound up getting the $$$ iMac--still works great!
This is exactly the computer I built for creating artworks, except I bought HP Small Form Factor (2nd gen i5, 8GB of RAM, 320GB HDD) and that's the only thing I found suiting my budget. After that, I upgraded almost everything and now the specs are like this (3rd gen i7, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD+320GB HDD, Nvidia Geforce GT 710) And...yeah, It works perfectly fine and I don't have to rely on my laptop all the time.
2:11 great beginner's intro to computer parts terms and functions. Still relevant. but warn: SSD drives, silicon macs vs intels, operating systems, hybrid environments using windows, linux, mac, Samsung plus competiing software for adobe
BaM's videos to me is like an useful art tv program I used to watch back in the days, and it makes me so nostalgic. Keep up the great work guys, I always love and appreciate all of your videos 👍 so thank you so much

This is so great! I've been trying to figure out the best, reasonably economic setup and this is it! I didn't even know all this upgradability was possible because I've been brainwashed by Apple's planned obsolescence business model. Really appreciate this as a young animator/artist.
You guys are AMAZING! I've been wondering how do i need my PC to be for painting, Photoshop etc. literally more than 10 years and now I know! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! This is eye opening omg
Tbh, I had a few of my friends explain to me computer parts and I've also done my own research but I never really understood what everything meant. This video illustrated everything perfectly, thank you!
This is what I did exactly, except I got a Optiplex 3010, which has a micro ATX motherboard. At first I just bought a rx 580 graphics card, a better PSU, more ram, and a better i-5 processor, but then i swapped everything out and got a motherboard and the whole works. Along with a decent Huion pen tablet. Now that I've made more money I just bought a cintiq 22hd, 2nd $50 monitor, and some monitor arms for the tablet and 2 monitors, really enjoying it.
Dudes! This is an amazing channel. It's the most useful channel I've ever subscribed to, and thank you so much for doing this episode even if it was not art related. Thank you guys so much for your hard work of speaking and planning and drawing and editing and voicing and everything. Thank you very much!!
This is really helpful and pretty great timing, this summer I’m going to Germany for a year and even though laptops aren’t the best for these things I’ve been meaning to get one. This video is really gonna help me choose which to get, thanks!
wow you guys did a really great job on explaining it from the very basic stuff and even more amazing cus it doesn't feel boring at all! Thanks guys for taking the time to make such thorough and interesting video. Thanks for making time in-between your day job to share all these amazing knowledge! 👌👌 I'm always excited whenever I see a post notification from you guys. At first I thought this video would be a somewhat "more advanced" stuff like best setup recommendation, but you really want people to grow and like you said in the last part of the video that hardware understanding is key to digital artist, you really gave them the tools to decide what to get on their own, not just dictating what to get for their workstation setup. I'm no digital artist, but I'm really glad that you shared your knowledge for free which for me shows how much you really love what you do! (it's very much entertaining watching all your videos too, even though I'm not an artist 😁)
@@fakecubed Not true, iPad is a great accessory for drawing, but there is totally no reason to invest in an ipad first then buy a standard setup (PC + Drawing tablet) if you are serious about this. Apps in ipad suck, except maybe procreate, that still does not match up with Photoshop. In Animation, the gap is even bigger with totally no apps to create animation on them. So if you wanna do stuff and you gotta choose, choose a PC. Ipad is a great secondary portable drawing tool, pretty sure BaM has one of them as well, but you just can't use them as your main tool, since it does not have the software for it. Plus there are no 3D software on ipad like Blender that so many creative professionals are using nowadays.
This was a really helpful video, thank you. For years i've gone into stores asking about the best computer for animation and art, and none of the sales people were really able to understand what was best, which made choosing difficult for me.
Finally you guys are uploading videos
I am so so so happy that I just can't explain with words
I think it is the best animation channel on UA-cam 😌😌😌😌
The clip of him sitting on his bed squinting at a tablet is literally how I draw things. Probably why I'm not a pro!
Its good that you provided your location.
Now if anything happens to you guys again I can investigate.
What do you mean by 'again'

i love this channel so much. two very talented passionate dudes giving great and helpful advice with top notch production value. really appreciate you guys. keep up the great work. learned so much through the years.
Thank you! Thank you!
I can see that the time it took really improved the quality of the videos, thank you for all the effort you put in the knowledge is invaluable to learning artists
well we did get a new camera, and we are getting more into after effects. so thank you.
I took a course on the basics of computer science three times in college (failed the first two times) and ya'll did a better job explaining things in first three minutes and I'm angry.
This definitely gave me more confidence about upgrading to a desktop computer!!! Thank you!! ☺️
Why is this *_more_* informative and well done than the video I saw when I *ACTUALLY* looked up how to go about 'building a computer'...!
Dude the funny thing is that I was watching this as I was doing school and I think i learned more from a video then hours of someone talking about really nothing. Also thx for making these videos I’ve been trying to make a cartoon but you know everyone has a budget so thanks.
I might have a decent setup for art in terms of specs but you made me far more aware about the desk! i really need an upgrade for the desk and chair i use, haha. no wonder my back hurts so much
*Throws ipad in paper pile trash
*My broke ass: Ouch
The money was wasted not when it was thrown away, but when it was bought in the first place.
As a tech enthusiast, I greatly appreciated Taran’s (The Macro King!) surprise appearance.
i have a gaming computer, i don't need this tutorial but I still watched it cuz its really interesting
As a new artist and lifelong PC building gamer this was a very informative video for beginners. I knew I personally wouldn't get anything out of it but I still wanted to see what you guys had to say and I'm glad I did. I wish I had this video 15 years ago when I was trying to build my first PC. 💜
This episode was the most amazing and helpful video so far, you guys rule!!!!
You guys need to make more videos they are so good
Oh my god, I love BaM animation, and I love Taran Van Hemert, to see him in a BaM animation video just BLEW MY MIND THANK YOU I LOVE YOU
This video fell from the sky! It was just what I needed. Thank you so much, I'm in love with this channel!
Staying on the topic on a budget/for starters, can you do a video about best free/cheap beginner-friendly drawing software? That'd help a lot.
Dude...you guys are my favorite UA-cam Channel, handdsss dowwwwnn!
This is exactly the computer I built for creating artworks, except I bought HP Small Form Factor (2nd gen i5, 8GB of RAM, 320GB HDD) and that's the only thing I found suiting my budget.
After that, I upgraded almost everything and now the specs are like this (3rd gen i7, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD+320GB HDD, Nvidia Geforce GT 710)
And...yeah, It works perfectly fine and I don't have to rely on my laptop all the time.
very resourceful! i love this
2:11 great beginner's intro to computer parts terms and functions. Still relevant. but warn: SSD drives, silicon macs vs intels, operating systems, hybrid environments using windows, linux, mac, Samsung plus competiing software for adobe
_This is the crossover I never thought I needed in my life._
Great idea for an episode. I really like the breakdown you gave on how computers work as well. Very informative and clear cut!
thank you!
The most complete and best advice I've seen so far, great job BAM 🤜🤛
BaM's videos to me is like an useful art tv program I used to watch back in the days, and it makes me so nostalgic. Keep up the great work guys, I always love and appreciate all of your videos 👍 so thank you so much
WoooOOOooowwWWww!! Such a great explanation! My gamer geek brothers did not manage to explain it as you did it so perfectly! Thnx! P.s. You guys have a great channel!
you guys are way underated you need muuuuuuuch more subscribers
btw sorry for my bad english ):
Good to see you back, boys. Keep up the great work!
This is the first video i Watch that explains things from basics. Thanks

Me: Huh? I never thought that I would use computer parts as lego to play with when im an adult.
first video that give us a real affordable pc
YOU GUYS ARE GODS!!!!!!!!!!
I wish this video was around 2 years ago before I bought my current laptop...
This was a stellar video - great explanations and breakdowns. Thanks fellas.
This is so great! I've been trying to figure out the best, reasonably economic setup and this is it! I didn't even know all this upgradability was possible because I've been brainwashed by Apple's planned obsolescence business model. Really appreciate this as a young animator/artist.
Came here for tips.
Didn’t expect for more. Like, you explained computer stuff really well!
If this wasn’t the most broken down helpful info on upgrading, I don’t know what is thank you guys 😭✨
Keep em coming boysssss
Dudes! This is an amazing channel.
It's the most useful channel I've ever subscribed to, and thank you so much for doing this episode even if it was not art related.
Thank you guys so much for your hard work of speaking and planning and drawing and editing and voicing and everything.
Thank you very much!!
you guys are so awesome
i needed this . my pc is struggling, but i have room to upgrade my hardware. my issue was "what to i buy to make it better?" so this helped
I'm always excited whenever I see a post notification from you guys.
“I cant see myself working professionally on a tablet or iPad”
**looks down eerily on my procreate app and apple pen**
Haha this sucks
Ignore them. I know more professional artists working with Procreate for at least some if not all of their work than I know using Adobe exclusively.

P.S I first learned to draw digitally with MS paint and mouse before moving onto more serious equipment
Thanks Brent, Very informative! You provide ALOT of technical computer information! I really enjoy your ability to break down the parts of a computer!
it´s great to see you again guys
I don't know anything about computers or art, but this video was very easy to understand, thank you!
I'm ashamed to say I had no clue about computers before this but this really helped me out and made building my own gear less scary
youtube will tell you everything you need to know. i built my first computer at 16 with no prior instruction -brent
@@BaMAnimation That's so cool! I guess I'll be dabbling in some computer parts from now on hahah
I'm 17 and already have a laptop and tablet but wouldn't mind upgrading just for my back health alone, tho the speed and upgradeabitly is also a very big plus :)
I love you guys, one of the best channels on UA-cam.
Its so great to have a new Quality Bam Video. Seriously you guys have teached me so much with your videos. Maybe I should send in some Art soon.
Running Sidecar function is awesome for drawing, so you use your Mac for the software (animate, harmony, etc).
True that you need to create an environment that allows you to enjoy making art, and so many other great advices!
When I had to change my computer I had to go searching a lot for all what you guys just explained, the world is lucky to have you as content creators.
PD I loved the plumbus popping in the desktops.
I subscribed when I saw the PLUMBUS, I see these guys mean business !!
very entertaining and informative ,big up unuh-self
This channel is great!
everything is so specific and useful that it never leaves doubts.
Just make life easier for beginning artists and animators... thank you guys!
I don’t know how but your content always manage to surprise me in a positive way. Like, I wish I had seen this video some years ago. Great job, guys (as usual)
