    I think what we got in 2023 seems like a better, more fleshed out version of the original draft. Also, some things just work best in an animated setting.

    I'm not sure what I would like more, the Live Action Mario movie we got or this Fantasy draft, as while it more fantasy elements in line with the game, its also very loosely tied to Mario. Wouldn't mind seeing that adapted without the characters though. With Puppets and such making it look like a 90s film.

    And also it was the directors fault for scrapping all of the fantasy elements of the script in favor of turning it into a dystopian sci-fi movie with evolved dinosaurs which was not a good idea to do because another film was released around the same time this was, and that movie was Jurassic Park.

    I'm a little surprised The Buster hasn't done a Legends of Fandom on Batman Triumpant/Unchained yet. The 5th planned Batman film meant to follow Batman and Robin. Surely he's gotten tons of requests to do that movie by now. Maybe he's waiting to reach a channel milestone first before he covers it, or it's one he just doesn't want to do. Maybe all the info about this movie has already been released or leaked so a Legends of Fandom would only be stating information everyone already knows.

    When I saw the 1993 movie, I didn't like it at first, though rewatching it years later, I grew to like it a bit more. However, this "dream draft" is pretty interesting, and in some ways, it feels like certain elements to it inspired some of Mario's later titles. Of course, the wedding part makes me think of when Mario and Cappy fight Bowser in Super Mario Odyssey.
    Looking at this draft now, and what became of the eventual film, it's no wonder Bob Hoskins (RIP) and John Leguizamo hated working on it. The draft seems pretty gritty enough on its own, so edgifying it wasn't really necessary. Also, Danny Devito as Mario, Tom Hanks as Luigi, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as King Koopa? Surprisingly, that sounds very fitting.
    Would have loved to see how the draft version looked if that was the one that became the movie instead of the one we DID get.

      I actually asked the SMB Archive on X and they replied that that's FALSE. They said contrary to popular belief, Tom Hanks was eyed for Luigi. They also said there was no indication that Meg Ryan was actually a real casting choice for Hildy considering it all began on a MyCast.

    4:32 the Meg Ryan bit was false. I actually asked the SMB Archive people and they replied to me ther was no actual source or discussions of her as Hildy. But they did confirmed DeVito, Hanks and Schwarzenegger were true. This Meg Ryan casting actually began as a fancast on a popular website called "My Cast"

    • @brandonspain12345
      @brandonspain12345 7 місяців тому +1

      Tbf, Mario's personality wasn't really defined until Super Mario 64 and onwards. And this in 1991. So the writers made up their own take on Mario's personality. But unlike Woody, Mario in the script had a lot of reasons to be angry. Being dumped at the last second from his wedding, is late for rent with low money from there struggling business, and was forced to be a plumber after his dad died and was forced to raise Luigi after their mom died. Later on, Luigi revealed he wanted to leave Mario a long time ago but promised their mom to stay with him, knowing very well Mario would've been so angry and bitter that he would've died alone and felt he failed to look after him. Mario actually grows as a character at the end. Early on in a campfire scene, Mario explains to Toad that having a brother like having a rock in your shoe, always hurts every step he goes. (With Luigi listening.) By the end, Luigi is turned to stone and tells Mario "Now I'm the rock in your shoe." in a crying Mario's hands.
      In an odd way, their relationship is very similar to George and Lenny in Mice of Men. You have the older brother looking after the younger brother who screws up because he was the personality of a naive child. It's not like the modern games but while reading it, it was a welcomed interpretation.

    • @supermariof0521
      @supermariof0521 7 місяців тому

      @@brandonspain12345 I suppose. I just feel like there were some instances where Mario's bitter behavior went too far for me to really like him. Like the way he's written in this draft gave me this impression that he's the kinda guy who would see Luigi get hit by a car, watch him die and be like "Good riddance you stupid mooch!". Like you can still have him be cynical, but one change I'd make is maybe he knows Luigi is a naive innocent soul, and maybe he tries to discourage him from hooking up with Hildi because he doesn't want what happened between him and Brenda to happen to his brother, in the sense that he doesn't want Luigi to be taken advantage of and thus suffer the same heartbreak he suffered. Like maybe they'd argue about his relationship with Hildi. Like have Mario be bitter about his breakup, but because Luigi is more optimistic, he doesn't wanna see Luigi become as bitter as he himself is, as maybe Luigi's optimism is all Mario has left.

      @@supermariof0521 I didn't mind for me since it was still early in the series, and with my love for many action movies from the 80s, I like the smartass asshole protagonist. But I totally get it. It wouldn't be my direct idea for Mario in my version. If you want Mario and Luigi to have a buddy comedy scenario and have an arc to love each other, I'd make it more like the Brothers from Mouse Hunt who were more like Laurel and Hardy. They struggled on their success and loss but still worked together as brothers. They argued but not too viciously. But like what ERod said, had Danny DeVito been cast in the Fantasy Draft, his selfish personality would've been somehow likable with his performance since DeVito was also great at those roles. Like his character in Matilda was a horrible dad, but goshdarn, his performance made me love him.

      @brandonspain12345 7 місяців тому +1

      @@supermariof0521 That's exactly what I thought when I watched the movie! Their characters are very much like Mario and Luigi. I'd probably would've released the film around late 1996 with the success of Mario 64 and RPG and after basing the movie after Mortal Kombat's success of making a live action adaptation. Cast Michelle Pfeiffer as Princess Peach, Tim Curry as the voice of Bowser, Gilbert Gottfried as the voice of Toad, and the Jim Henson Creature Effects doing the practical effects. And you'd have a proper Mario movie in the mid-90s.

    The dream draft sounds really interesting, but it also sounds really EXPENSIVE. I don't blame Nintendo for trying to hedge their bets, but in the process they ended up with a terrible movie that was even less like what anybody wanted. They kind of shot themselves in the foot on that one.

    • @supermariof0521
      @supermariof0521 Рік тому

      Honestly this Fantasy Draft could've been awesome if Mario wasn't a detestable ass wipe in this draft. Like instead of actively resenting Luigi's existence, why not have Mario be cynical in a fun way? Like he'll playfully tease Luigi, but is also protective of him, after their parents died (which is said in the draft), and Mario wants to help Luigi learn to defend himself, but also doesn't want him to suffer cause of a mistake Mario makes. Give Mario and Luigi the same dynamic that Gill and Nemo had in "Finding Nemo". Know what I mean?

    Just my personal preference but I prefer the Mario movie we got compared to this script, specifically for the relationship between the brothers and the portrayal of Mario. The shallow, bitter, cruel Mario in this version feels so completely off to what Mario has always been. Plus the weirdly stereotypical feeling of having the mob involved just because they're Italian American (in what I assume was still supposed to be for kids?). Just feels overly mean-spirited.
    Mario loves his brother! I've never seen him be frustrated with having to protect or take care of him. He's a good guy who likes to help people out. I liked that the 90s movie made their relationship almost father-and-son, where Mario was still grumpy and would get frustrated with his brother but always wanted to help him anyway.
    While the movie we ended up with was clearly a mess, it's still got a sense of fun adventure that I feel is lacking from the original script. Neither is as good an adaptation as the newest movie, but I like my drunken buddies one as well.
