It's pretty solid casting. I can immediately see two ways to go with an older BG:
- option one is to lean into the washed-up athlete. Rather than a college athlete who got got caught match-fixing and fairly quickly landed as museum night watchman, have his descent take a while - a couple of almost return to fames, and coaching jobs that fall apart because he's not able to be patient with his students before he ends up turning 40, alone except for Skeets, having to accept that he's never going to get back into the game, and coming up with the scheme to strike it rich in the distant past.
- option two is to come in on a Booster who's been active as a hero (more or less) for a couple of decades - or possibly had been active a couple of decades ago and went quiet for whatever reason - it depends whether the wider setting is treating heroes as something that's a part of life, or something that's just (re)starting up now. So he's no longer the reckless glory hound he used to be, though still appreciating the value of good publicity, and is re-evaluating his life and possibly facing new heroes looking for a mentor figure...
Gunn definitely seems to want to present his DC universe as having a history, being less focused on showing origin stories. However, in part because Booster Gold is a lesser known character with a unique and interesting origin and also because I love the idea of Booster Gold as a has-been athlete, occasionally recognised but far from the fame he once had, I really hope they do the first option.
My first exposure to the character of Booster Gold was the Justice League Unlimited episode "The Greatest Story Never Told." It encapsulates his character in the twenty some minutes of the episode. It's a great introduction if you've never heard of this guy.
Dude, JLU was so good at getting characters over. It got me to be a fan of Vigilante, Shining Knight, Elongated Man, and ESPECIALLY Booster. He's an asshole! Except the times he is singlehandedly the best hero in existence! But he can't talk about those times!

The age would work if it ties into the blue beetle movie. Ted kord is his best friend. Ted's daughter is in her 20s. So Ted and booster being in their 40s+ fits

Given Kumail's age, I can't help but wonder if we might get scenes with Ted Kord, portrayed by Angel Manuel Soto's choice for the role, Jason Sudeikis. He is only a couple of years older than Kumail.
While I think Kumail Nanjiani will do a great job, I agree with the idea that Booster Gold should be played by a blonde (white) actor. Generally, I think that for most characters race doesn't matter, but some characters have traits or backgrounds that are important to the character's core. For example, Black Panther should be black because he needs to be Wakandan. Booster Gold should look the part of a superhero. He's the All-American blonde, blue-eyed, square jawed, muscular, 6'3", football-playing jock with a great smile that is able to convince you he's a superhero just by standing there with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face

I can totally see this pick, it's unexpected for sure, but I think his comedy style is very in line with the character. Actually i think having him and another actor his age for Ted Cord could be hilarious. They could play up the age angle and they could be seen as "has been" heroes still trying to be relevant, despite him literally being from the future. lol.
I hate saying this but I have Nanjani Fatigue... Would be perfectly fine in the role, but I feel like he's been over-used lately. Plenty of other lesser known actors could hit the same demographics and energy, and bring new types lf performances to these sorts of roles

I’d like to hold Booster Gold’s character to be more than a comedy performance. The bitter sadness of his story is as important as the humor.
I’d be intrigued to see how this impacts his role in the MCU. I’d love to see more with The Eternals, but it’s seeming more and more unlikely. Marvel’s loss is DC’s gain though! Nanjiani has so much charisma and would absolutely kill as Booster Gold

I'm on board with it if true, it's one of those picks that aren't obvious but make sense, but I take any if these rumors with a heaping helping of salt. Unless he's in Peacemaker, I don't even know why this character would need to be cast yet.
I agree with the kind of common sentiment that Kumal is a bit old for my liking, but other than that he’s perfect in my mind. He’s pretty Boostery in the recent Ghostbusters movie as well
Would love a adaptation of the Booster Gold episode from Justice League cartoon. Or something like it because it captures his character really well.
People got to realize that Gunn is not agist. He’ll cast 50 year olds like Idris Elba as his leads without thinking twice (especially when stunt doubles and cgi doubles in masks do so much of the action)

I’m not the hugest fan of the casting rumor only because Booster Gold’s humor comes from his massive ego and Kumail’s is a bit self deprecating. I hope he can prove me wrong but he’s not an actor I think of when I think egos that cause a lot of problems. I’m glad to see the first James Gunn casting that isn’t just a guy who looks exactly like the guy in the comics but I think there are other Asian actors you could pick who have that goofy ego

I’m all for EDI. But with this rumor now I’m starting to question my ideals. I hate that I prefer a white dude. I’m just a booster gold fan and there’s not many booster gold fans. He isn’t as popular as he should be. So I get why this might be true. But I feel like if it was Superman or Batman the reactions we are getting out of people wouldn’t be the same.

If this is true: Looks-wise, this is way off the mark as he looks nothing like BG. And I’m sick of the race swapping of white male characters. But acting/personality-wise, he actually does fit in that sense. But again, I wish they would’ve went with someone who actually looks like the character. But that’s if this is true.

Here's what i like about this (potential) casting: Kumail Nanjiani would work as both slight mentor to Jaime's Blue Beetle and also be a potential best friend/buddy to a Ted Kord (likely played by Jason Sudeikis given the Blue Beetle movie).
The "younger casting" rumor never sat right with me simply because i wouldnt have seen Gunn building a very JLI-Coded DCU and deciding to not focus Booster's casting even a little around making him work with a Ted Kord Blue Beetle
I like Kumail Nanjiani, but Booster Gold is more a pretty boy jock, and Kumail is a goofy Everyman, it doesn’t quite fit. Glen Powell or Glenn Howerton are a better choice.

Also while I’m fine with race swapping most characters I agree that there is a white privilege thing to Booster that you loose if it’s not played by a white actor. Also like you said in your last video, it’s kinda a bad look to have one of the premier non white superhero’s get their powers by stealing them. Id love it if we could’ve gotten non white Superman, Batman, or Green Lanturn…. but Booster is supposed to be the satire of all satires in the beginning. He needs to be the white, blonde, blue eyed, athletic movie starish stereotype people might think of.

An insane theory I had is that there will be 2 Booster Gold’s
An actual one from our timeline that is well received and known but ultimately forgotten in time as he never achieved iconic status (Kumail)
Then there’s a younger, more comic accurate fraud from the future who takes over the mantle and claims he is the second coming of Booster
This would pair Kumail’s Booster with Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle and the younger Booster with Jaime’s Blue Beetle
It could even play into Ted’s disappearance from the Blue Beetle movie where Kumail’s Booster went missing too and leaves the identity open for the taking
You know I think a fun update for his character and I know it kind of sounds how you do fellow kids but I think this would work and I've never quite seen this. I think it would be hilarious if he was like a UA-cam or twitch streamer. And like really play into that both of like everything he does. He's constantly asking chat to do of like what's his next move and like reading what he's done and stuff like that. Maybe he makes like a bet on like defeating a villain for gift subs and then he loses so everyone gets the gift subs. But I think it would also add to the comedy of that he's like in his forties. So like he has like a decent popularity on Twitch. But like most of the people in there are just like dude. You're too fucking old to be doing this. That would add so much comedy and would also make it modern day relevant. Kind of maybe at the expense of aging it a bit. But again he's doing time travel so it makes sense.
