Hi Andrea Kidd. I'm happy you liked that part, as I was one of my own animations. Too bad I only got a fuzzy recording of it. It looked much better in person. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse I was wondering if you did it yourself. Now I’m even more impressed. I thought that maybe you’d lent your house as a canvas for an animations business like Atmosfx, or are a professional yourself. Your projector must be powerful. Did you do an animations making course? I decided to have a go myself, initially to make a cancellation message because of COVID 19, then I thought I’d share it and now I think I want to keep experimenting. It’s not on a grand scale like yours. I’m only learning how to make videos, so I’m very curious about how you did it. Again, the idea of the skeleton was great. It added suspense. You are so talented. I also think that playing around with this stuff keeps the child in the adult alive. Are you going ahead with your display this year? Sadly, I’ve decided not to, but I’m planning for 2021.
I haven't decided if I want to put forth the effort this year. We usually have a big crowd, so I don't know if it's smart to do it in these COVID-times. :(
@@ProjectThisHouse Yes I understand and I share your concerns. It's very disappointing, especially since it's on a Saturday this year. Anyway, maybe it'll give you some extra time to make 2021 even more spectacular (if possible). Stay healthy.
@@pumpkinhead8633 We actually had big plans for this year, making it a big Halloween block party with a DJ in between the projection showings, but unfortunately it will have to be pushed to next time Halloween falls on a Saturday.:(
Hi Farmer Row21. Thank you for watching. It's fairly simple. First you map your house as the projector sees it. This is done with a paint program. You then take this map, and start filling it with textures and other elements in an editing program and make a video, that you then project back onto the house. Easy peasy, right? (hint: google "projection mapping") :)
Hi Jay. Thanks for stopping by. I don't really know all brands, but if the projector is a short throw projector and has about 2800+ lumens, then you should be good. HOWEVER don't go for the crazy deals on eBay where they say you get a 10000 lumens projector from China for $50. :) I have seen my model on eBay for under $400 which is a steal as you can use it year after year and not only for Halloween.
@@ProjectThisHouse You used a 1080p projector with 2800 lumen? Or is it 4k? Although it looks like you don't have any back lights so no blowing out the projection. Impressive work!

Hi K, thanks for watching and liking it...and yes, it takes a little work and time to put it together, but when people say nice things about it, it's worth the effort. :)
Hi there. Thanks for stopping by and watching. You can google Projection Mapping or House Projection, but it is basically just using a projector to show a tailor-made video on your house. :)
Hi Anna. Once you get the technique down, it's actually not going that far out. :) It's like making a short movie, and then just showing it on your house. I appreciate the thumbs up though. :)
Hi Mini DK#9. Thanks for stopping by and watching. If you're referring to just the texture on the walls, I create that myself in Photoshop. If you're referring to the curling of the walls, I did that effect in a 3D program called Cinema4D. :)
I am just starting with some house projections. Wondering what tools you use to make the video. I'm using madmapper to get video on the house but creating the video is still a bit of a challenge. Lots of free stuff out there, but looking for some tips on how to create that great house facade and then how to combine other videos on top of that. For example if I wanted to take the facade and put spiders or a spider web overlayed, so that you can still see the facade. Sorry for rambling, mostly looking for recommendations on video creation.
Hi Michael. Thanks for stopping by and watching. I've just discovered Madmapper myself, so I don't know the capabilities of the software, but basically you have to think of this as layers. First layer is of course the house texture, which I usually find by doing a google search for images of "old wood wall" or "abandoned house" etc. Once you have positioned those images you add the next layer. If you want that to be e.g. the spider web, it needs to be a file with an alpha channel which makes everything but the web transparent. If you have an image with the web on e.g. a black background and no transparency, you have to use a blending mode to make the black see through, but I don't know Madmapper's capabilities in that regard. I hope that helped a bit? Sorry for rambling. LOL :)
Hello fellow Trick or treater I love your house mapping project its one of the top ones on you tube. I am trying to start on a project myself and was hoping I could get some guidance in the right direction. I want to project a AtmosFX pumpkin like yours on my wall but with my own music and sounds. I just don't know what program to use to make my own pumpkin talk. could you send some advice my way. thank you for your time and love for the holiday.
Hi Phillip Guillen. Thanks for stopping by and watching, I really appreciate it. Anything is possible with projection mapping and there's plenty of help and tutorials to get you started. Google "projection mapping tutorial" here on UA-cam and join the Facebook group "Holiday Projection Mapping", then you're already halfway there. In your specific case, I would use "Character Animator" from the Adobe Creative Cloud package, and also "After Effects" from the same package. With the first program, you can animate your pumpkin to talk or sing using a webcam on your computer, and then you'd use After Effects to composite that video on a map of your house, with textures and other AtmosFX footage if you like. There are free alternatives to both Character Animator and After Effects, but I'm not too familiar with them to offer any advice. :)
Hi Shay. Yes, the opening skeleton animation was also part of the projected video. I made that animation myself in Cinema4D, which is why the walk cycle is a bit shotty. LOL.
Hi Richard Villegas. Thanks for stopping by and watching. This projection is made with a BenQ MX819ST projector. It has 3000 lumens. I’ve since moved on to Optoma EH460ST with 4200 lumens. Both are “short throw” projectors, which allows you to place them closer to the house, so you don’t lose too much of the light intensity.
Hi Paco Ba. There are no dumb questions here. This is done by using a video projector to show a movie custom made to fit to the specs of the house. That was the short version. How you make the actual video is the long story. :)
ProjectThisHouse I guess that was my more direct question, the video itself. I found a company that starts them for 99 dollars but I’m sure making your own is a lot of work. Finding all the animations I haven’t found any other than actually paying for a custom one.
@@pacoba6432 Ha ha, sorry for the misunderstanding. Well, AtmosFX.com is a good place to start, but their videos are just to be used as elements in your own video, as they were ment for a TV, monitor or wall projection. I hope to do some "How To" videos after Halloween, that can give you an idea og how this is done. :)
As the projection seemed to fit your house perfectly (each corner had cladding effect at times etc) I am curious to know if the building projection was bespoke to you? I keep watching and whilst I try to figure it all out I just find myself drifting away and indulging in the whole extravaganza. This is a truly magnificent display. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Hi nom nom. Thank you for watching and for your kind words. Making the projection match the building it is being projected onto so perfectly, is what "projection mapping" is all about. The first step of the production is to make a precise outline of your house, as it is seen through the projector. This outline is then filled in with textures and videos using various graphics programs depending on ambition and skill. Some of the video elements are purchased, but I make most of it myself.
@@ProjectThisHouse You are an extremely talented person. I can't even programme a picaboo so I really appreciate your display. Thanks for the reply. Cheers
Hi TalkerArt. Unfortunately you need to make your own, but it's totally doable. Get a projector and a paint program on a laptop, then you're already half way there. :)
Is there anyway to get some how to videos? Or even in the description it would be nice to at least know what programs or sites you use for all your amazing work
Hi Gary Hawkins. Yes, you're right, I should have put more information in the description back when I first posted this video, as I've answered hundreds and hundreds of questions like yours over the years. But I like the interaction, so here goes: I use Adobe Photoshop for the base textures of the house. I make the 3D animations in Cinema4D - and buy some that are pre-made from AtmosFX - I assemble all the animations and effects with the Photoshop-textures in Adobe AfterEffects, and render a raw video out from there. I use Adobe Premier to add the soundtrack and effects to the raw video for the final product. Now, I did plan to make some tutorials, but still haven't gotten around to it. There are some here on UA-cam that are very detailed, so just search for "house mapping tutorial". :)
@@ProjectThisHouse wow awesome! Thank you for the update! I really appreciate it! I have a question... I'm trying to come up with a possible business idea and see if I could start a projection mapping business for individuals looking to get it installed on their house for the holidays.... how possible do you think that could be? And ideas or suggestions?
@Gary Hawkins There's already a handful of people out there offering the services you're referring to, but I don't know how lucrative it is when you count in the time it takes to individually alter each projection to fit a new house every time. And then there's the legality of using copyrighted material and music, if you're not making everything from scratch yourself. I think it would be easier to make a business that creates elements that people can use in their own projections, just like AtmosFX does. But is there a market for what you suggest? Absolutely! :)
Hi Greg McAteer. Thanks for stopping by and watching. This is done with a single consumer video projector (BenQ MX819ST with 3000 lumens), audio is coming through a PA system (Behringer EUROPORT EPS500MP3 PA System with 500 Watt) and the projected video is homemade using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects and Cinema4D, with some elements bought at AtmosFX.com. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse Thanks for quick response. I love that you change it up every year also. Do you have a FB page? Or anywhere you may some tutorial content. Thanks again!
@@ProjectThisHouse yup, totally get it. Whenever you get more details, would love to see it. I'm just getting into this and I don't seem to be able to get the brightness that some people are. Your images look crystal clear. I'm using an Optamo EH412ST which is 4k lumens...but feels like a lot of the content is subdued. Thanks and Happy Halloween!
@@gmcateer08, your light intensity depends on how far back your projector is placed. 4000 lumens placed 30 feet away is obviously not the same as 4000 lumens placed 60 ft away. The loss of light intensity over distance is brutal. Goggle the "Inverse-Square Law of Light". But if you look at my projections, I've learned through trial and error which colors I can use, and which ones just turn up as a muddled mess. So I'm sticking to a reduced palette with mostly bright colors. :)
Question. I know some of the sounds you get from Atmos FX. But where do you get the other sound from? Like for example, the thunder and the bats, and that weird circus music.
Hi Elisha Simmons, thanks for stopping by and watching, I appreciate it. I get my sound effects from the internet - mostly from searching here on UA-cam. There are a bunch of free sounds. The music for this video, I made myself. :)

Hi there, flyinsparkey. Sorry for the slow response. I had to watch the whole video at xlights and it was looooong...but very informative. I think your problem is, that you didn't make masks - you made shapes. It's easy to make that mistake, as you're using the same tool. To make masks, you need to do it with a layer activated, otherwise the tool will create a shape instead on its own layer, hence why you're ending up with a lot of separate layers instead of masks contained in the same layer. I hope that helped you a bit. :)
ProjectThisHouse unfortunately I wasn’t able to put anything new together this year. My brother has been extremely sick so between taking care of him and working, I haven’t had any free time. Things are getting a little better so hopefully next year!! I love the way you do the 3d effects, that’s something I’m very interested in learning more about. Do you use cinema 4d ?
Hi Brian, sorry for the late response, and sorry about your brother. I hope he has gotten better. Hi Wes. Thanks for watching. Good to hear your mapping is done and working. I did the peeling effect in Cinema4D, so it's actually real 3D and took a while to model, but it was worth it, i think. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse IT was DEF Worth it. What is that effect called if I wanted to watch a tutorial or read more about it so I can learn? Getting Cinema4D NOW btw.
Hi Hannah. Thanks for stopping by and watching. Well, since projection mapping IS fake, the object is to make it look real. :) How is it done? The first step of the production is to make a precise outline of your house, as it is seen through the projector. This outline is then filled in with textures and videos using various graphics programs depending on ambition and skill. Some of the video elements are purchased, but I make most of it myself. The better you can match the elements to the contours of the house, the more believable the animations will look...even if it's fake. :)
ProjectThisHouse Oops! I must have been typing too fast. I meant to say that it looks real, not fake. That makes sense to map out the house. Did it take you years to get it looking this great?
@@Hannah-io9jb if you look at the other videos on my channel, it started with a naïve attempt in 2014, but even then I think the effect was impressive to watch in person. In the following years it has just been about tweaking details and getting better ideas. :)
Hi R1Sky Manic. This is not expensive to do. The projector I used can be bought on eBay for as low as $79. Then you just need a computer with some kind of video editing software. There are some free ones out there: E.g. VSDC Free Video Editor or DaVinci Resolve (Mac). Add a couple of speakers and you're all set. :)
I'd love to know how you not only projected this onto your house, but how you did animated overlays for the atmosfear fx videos. This is really awesome and I'd love to see it in person. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Jim. Thanks for watching. When animating, it's all done in layers, where the camera looks from the top down. So if you make the top layer the texture of your house and cut out e.g. windows or garage door, then you reveal the layer underneath, with e.g. AtmosFX animations. That was the short answer. I hope it made sense. :)
Hi Michael Mastelero. Thanks for watching. I make the videos myself. Everything from mapping the house manually in a paint program, to the actual editing of the video in Adobe After Effects. Some of the elements used are bought from AtmosFX.com. I wish I had the money to buy Lightform. That would definitely make the mapping easier. :)
Hi Jill. The videos are "home made", with a couple of incorporated elements bought at AtmosFX.com. I have a short throw (wide angled) projector, so I'm about 30 ft from my house - we live in a cul de sac too, so it's not a big problem that I'm a little bit out in the street. :)
@@jillspady6450 I do "fence off" my projector space with some light strings, so no one walks in front of the projector. That leaves room all the way up to the house to pull power and audio cables without worrying about people tripping over them. Also, I only project on the eve of Halloween, so I'm not leaving it outside every night. :)
Hey, we saw your house and were inspired to do our own, but we've run into an issue; we've been using assets from AtmosFX and they all have either a black or white background, which is preventing us from being able to layer them above.a texture we projected on our house. We noticed that in some of your videos you had used material from AtmosFX and were able to layer it over your house textures, without having the white or black background in the way. We'd love your advice on how to work through this problem. (for example, in this video you have the joke-telling pumpkin overlaid on the wooden texture of the garage and there is no white or black background from the pumpkin).
Hi Andy Yankovich. I know, right?!? Every survey I get from AtmosFX, I always finish in the suggestion box with the request for alpha channels for the animations. My workaround is a mix of either using "blending modes" or "luma keying" to get rid of the black or white. Whatever works best for the individual clip. You can google that and then try to see if you can get the same results as me. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse so i did some digging, and it makes sense to me that those could be used to turn a black or white area of a picture transparent, but how would you go about applying it to an entire video? Is there a certain software that I'd need?
@@andyyankovich69 Same way. Whatever editing software you use, there should be an option for blending the layers, or a luma keying effect you can apply.

Hi Kathleen. Thanks for watching. I'm happy you liked it. :)
How is this even possible its amazing
Hi Farmer Row21. Thank you for watching. It's fairly simple. First you map your house as the projector sees it. This is done with a paint program. You then take this map, and start filling it with textures and other elements in an editing program and make a video, that you then project back onto the house. Easy peasy, right? (hint: google "projection mapping") :)
Whats another brand of projectors do you recommend besides the benq that dont cost so much
@@joshb5898 My projector is a BenQ MX819ST with 3000 lumens and a native resolution of 1024 x 768, so anything in that range should be able to achieve results like mine. As long as you project onto light colored house walls and block out the closest street lighting (if any) and make sure not to have any lights on inside the house.

LOL :)
I get the last joke, about, pumpkin patch. Instead of a pirate's "eye" patch. Lol
How did u do the skeleton ? Was it with what projector ?? And where did y get the animation frkm .?

This is probably a dumb question when I can look it up, but how did you do this? Thanks

Hello. Love it!!! What software did you use to create your projections? Adobe? Have you created tutorials yet? Thanks
Absolutely! :)
Today @ UA-cam: the drunk house that is telling jokes
Great job! Can you give some details on your setup? Which projectors, using Adobe AE? this is very cool, thanks!
Hi Greg McAteer. Thanks for stopping by and watching. @@gmcateer08 I'm planning on doing some tutorials, but with a family and a full time job, it's hard to find time for my hobbies. :)

Hi R1Sky Manic. This is not expensive to do. The projector I used can be bought on eBay for as low as $79. Then you just need a computer with some kind of video editing software.
