It brings back memories from 1991 when i was there.i left a bag of souvenirs in a shop in Nara whilst staying in Osaka. A few weeks later, the bag ended up delivered to my home in Scotland. It was amazing how they managed to track me down and went to the bother and their expense of reuniting me with my stuff.
@Brendan, During the low peak season, like in winter, the deers are feed by the park caretakers with grass - like those you see horses are feed with in barns. The Nara deers are seen as sacred animals and are properly taken care of :-) If I am not mistaken, the Todaiji temple is also the largest wooden structure in the world.
We were in Nara last year. Beyond the big temple, there is a facility that provides care to deer, including fawns, injured, and aggressive individuals. We saw at least 20 fawns and 50 adults at the facility. They had a bleacher area where we viewed fawns with their mothers. We just wandered across it near closing time. Since our daughter just started college toward becoming a veterinarian, we had to go inside. I think your points about the deer are very valid. From what I have read, in recent years it is permissible to kill deer outside certain zones, and there are over 100 injuries to people by deer annually. We loved Nara.
Nara is my favourite place on earth. The pagoda at sunset, is absolutely stunning. I shot an elopement there. It was just the three of us at dusk. Definitely a highlight in my life and something I’ll never forget.
That park was so beautiful :) And as you said even though the deer are amazing , it's all about the temples-cherry blossoms-pagodas & people :) Really special. You shot some awesome images :)
This time last year I had the privilege of attending my nieces wedding at a reception centre a little bit further into the park, makes for lovely wedding photos with the deer and cherry blossoms. Osaka Castle is another great spot for the blossoms and keep an eye out for brides and grooms getting portraits done around the castle. Really enjoying your vlog, and your travels.
Thanks guys! Something I'm trying to get better at: taking pictures of the other photographers - especially when they are interesting characters shooting interesting gear.
The lake with all the cherry blossoms is gorgeous!! I thought the deer looked a little scruffy. It looked fun to feed them but, like you said, it probably isn't the best thing for them.
I think they're probably "scruffy" because they're losing their winter coat... Not 100% sure, but I'm guessing that's the case as it happens back in Canada.
Nara is awesome! I went there in February and I didn't found many tourists. You should go to OKUNOSHIMA. It's an island full of rabbits, you can feed them of course. Greetings from Argentina!
I will give the fact about the deers. They are bowing and asking for biscuit because they know that you are a tourist wanting them to bow and ask for foods. Hove you ever thought why the deers don't steal or get biscuit from the "biscuit shop"? Once tourists buy the biscuit, the deers start asking for it, even though sometimes they are not hungry at all. These deers usually eat nuts and berries in the park as their main source of nutrients, so don't worry about animal ethics. The deers just play you.
I like the fact they are sacred, and that they will always be taken care of by the locals. Thank you for the comforting reply. Sacred has it's benefits!
Nara is so gorgeous. When you take a photo with people in it, do you NEED to get model releases in order to use it besides on social media, as in i'm assuming you can't sell any of these images to clients without these random peoples signatures? correct? I'm very curious!
Amazing looking place, and the deer are beautiful. The ethical side of things is always troubling but at least the deer are being well treated and hopefully the cookies have some commonality (content wise) with their normal diet. Superb images as well
What a great vlog. Its to cool that the deer will bow to you for a tasty morcel of food. I cannot wait to make it to japan. I just hear that it is super expensive, is this true? How did you find it?
Hmmmm... So, what I've found is that you can do it cheapish if you're willing to sacrifice space. Smaller rooms aren't that bad. I think it's about the same as the US in most regards.
Brendan van Son oh wow awesome thats great to hear :) i love your content and quality, cant wait to be there someday myself. Thanks so much for helping out. Cheers!
I imagine the slow season means fewer tourists to feed the deer, but also less tourist money to feed the people so the people probably eat some Venison to survive and it all works out.
As sweet as the deer are, kind of prefer the deer at Richmond Park, I.e around but left to do their own thing. Still Japan is fab fun! Keep clicking, keep inspiring be well x ta
It's actually sad to me to see those deer conditioned that way. I understand the oriental reverence for all living things, but to feed them by hand to the point they rely on that food isn't good. Besides, what's in those "cookies?" Is it actually healthy for the deer? Sad. Beautiful park though! Japan has been on my bucket list forever!
Yeah, it's a hard line to cross. I guess the question is, if people see they're sacred, does that make it ok to condition them and make them dependent? And, what's the difference between deer which are tamed and cows that are domesticated? I always find these conversations fascinating.
Well technically, no one could proof the house cats were domesticated. They were originally just like that. Thats what I heard. Hence the joke that humans were domesticated by cats, not the other way around LOL
I think it mellows out the toms, but the females are always fairly aloof from my experience. Then again, I'm not really a cat person. I prefer dogs. I got the cat when I got the dog. It's really his cat. They've been best buds since birth! They're both closing in on 12 years old now, so I won't have them much longer I'm afraid. Not sure what I'll do when they're gone.

Hahaha, that's amazing, and such a Japan story. :D

One of my favorite places in Japan!
Such a cool/crazy place, isn't it?!
Given its UNESCO status and all-around ancientness, the level of access to sites in Nara is... unusual.
Same here :)
Man! That one of the couple in the boat was unreal! One of your all-time bests.
Thank you!
Love Nara
Such beautiful architecture, and the scale. Make for stunning images, I want to rent a boat there.
Yeah, I definitely would have rented a boat had we gotten there earlier.
Cherry blossoms look amazing !
They are so cool to see/shoot.
Awesome photo vlog Japan looks like amazing place to visit.
It really is a special place.
Nara is my favourite place on earth. The pagoda at sunset, is absolutely stunning. I shot an elopement there. It was just the three of us at dusk. Definitely a highlight in my life and something I’ll never forget.
Incredible place, eh? Glad you had a rad experience!
That is a great image of the couple in the boat. Fun video.
Thanks! Glad you like that one.
That park was so beautiful :) And as you said even though the deer are amazing , it's all about the temples-cherry blossoms-pagodas & people :) Really special. You shot some awesome images :)
Thanks Debbie!
Yeah, yeah....they're all polite while grabbin' your cookies but for sure they talk smack behind your back

Really enjoying your vlog, and your travels.
Would be an amazing place for wedding photos. My sister (who is a wedding photographer) would have a field day here.
Agree with you. This matter of feeding haunted me right at the beginning of the vlog. Happy to see that our minds walk through the same path.
I always remember Todaiji Temple being absolutely huge. Another great video Brendan 😀
Thanks!!
Huge is the right word for it. Todaiji Temple is the biggest wooden structure in the world.
Love the photo of the guy with the camera
Agreed. I would say thats the picture of the day.
Thanks guys! Something I'm trying to get better at: taking pictures of the other photographers - especially when they are interesting characters shooting interesting gear.
Amazing video as always Brendan!
Thanks man!
wow this is such a nice video. you really are artistic!
Brilliant video, some stunning images throughout the day, so enjoying this trip👍✌️
Thanks mate, glad you're liking it!
That was cool - the park was really nice .... I will put it on the wish list of places to visit.
Yes! You should, such a cool place.

Brendan van Son Ah, that's good to hear.
11:42 WOW! What an image!
Thanks!
Very cool park
It's just incredible. Almost like the deer take away from the fact that it's full of these incredible temples.
Nara is awesome! I went there in February and I didn't found many tourists. You should go to OKUNOSHIMA. It's an island full of rabbits, you can feed them of course. Greetings from Argentina!
Yes, Jodie is desperate to go there too. Maybe next year.
Hi Brendan, loving the Japan vlogs! Awesome country! Can I ask what music you use in your intro? Love that tune!
Those are some exceptionally friendly deer!
INSTALIKE! Done it again. Another fantastic vlog. Man these are so good!
Thanks mate! Glad you're liking them
Awesome video as always. 👍🏻👌🏻
Thanks mate!

Awsome! Yes I agree with the wild animal thing. Have fun!
The Nara deers are not just wild animals, they are seen as sacred animals by the locals and are taken care of properly.
I like the fact they are sacred, and that they will always be taken care of by the locals. Thank you for the comforting reply. Sacred has it's benefits!
You are welcome.
I think they believe their deity takes the form of a deer when it comes down from the forest.
Brendan, could you add the filter density you used on your shots along with the other metadata? The last shot did you use a 10 stop filter?
Nara is so gorgeous. When you take a photo with people in it, do you NEED to get model releases in order to use it besides on social media, as in i'm assuming you can't sell any of these images to clients without these random peoples signatures? correct? I'm very curious!

Totally agree. Thanks for watching!
Love the vid!
Cheers!

Hahahha. Maybe the most darkly logical comment ever. :D
This deers are sacred.
Those deers looked possessed!
hahahha, addicted to cookies.
OK, after watching a lot of your videos, I finally have to ask, "What do you use the blue carbine for?"
He already answered that question in another video. It is for hanging water bottles and other things while walking around.
Yeah, honestly, I don't know. I just put it there one day and left it there. Some days I need a 3rd hand and will hang my water bottle off of it.
As sweet as the deer are, kind of prefer the deer at Richmond Park, I.e around but left to do their own thing. Still Japan is fab fun! Keep clicking, keep inspiring be well x ta
I agree. I like seeing them totally wild as well.
Do they carry Lyme disease like the ones in US
Honestly, no idea.
CoCo🇯🇵じゃん
Am I late??
Yup, but I'll still give you 3 points.

Ouch!
zam023 Having a cat, I would have to agree with that. She’s a smart animal, but completely cat!

deer eat grass bro... nature happens..
maybe you should research about the deer before you comment on the welfare of the them
second comment
