Hi I'm Wendy a resin artist and crafter.
In this video I am trying out a heat mat for the first time.
During the winter months it is hard to cure resin when you don't have your heating on during the night as I don't. This means that I have to get my resin mostly cured before the temperature drops which can make the resin cure slowly, cause frosting through and give a blush on top of the pieces. I have lost pieces in the past through not understanding this part of the prosses and wanted to share this heat mat idea with you.
I only recently realised they were available and it has made such a difference to me, during the winter months, that I have been able to carry on making resin art throughout the long nights with no trouble at all.
I hope you find this video helpful.
All comments are welcome.

Woohoo I think I can start my resin journey now that I have a heating mat. Thank you so kindly Wendy. ❤️
That’s fantastic Dale 😀😀😀 let me know how it goes ❤️❤️👍
@Toonpish Crafts I have a small dog, so working on a kennel or something so he can't scratch and bark at door to the resin room while I'm working. My poor 4 legged husband. Best husband ever ❤️ lol
It's great people like you help us learn best ways to succeed 👍👍
I love helping where I can. Thanks so much Hun ❤️
Brilliant, my resin shopping wish list just got bigger! 😆
Mine is neverending 🤣 as soon as I think I have completed it something else comes along lol
Interesting experiment. I was surprised how clear the piece that was on the mat was. It really made a difference. If the need arises I will definitely consider this. Thank you!
They are much more common place now as a lot of people use them 😀👍
Just bought one yesterday...... Can't wait to try it!!!!! Thanks for the great idea!!!!
That is great 👍😁 have fun with it 😁👍
Your videos are so professional. I really need to up my game!! Great comparison.
Thanks honey, you have only just started, you will get there. You have more courage then I do, it took me 5 years before I made my first video 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Here is Saskatchewan, Canada our winter temp for January has been minus 35 Celsius. My resin was not curing properly at all. This mat will be a game changer! Thank you for your video.
Oh my 😮 that sounds like a harsh place to live 😖
I’m sure your resin will perk up with a heat mat.
Good luck with it and happy crafting 😀👍
I purchased the mat from Let's Resin and I swear it looks EXACTLY like this mat... I think they're just repackaging the same items!
Oh I have just received mine from Let’sResin and it is far warmer than my previous ones. On a really low setting it is enough for me.
I hope that helps you 😀❤️
@@Toonpish oh good to know! Maybe I had mine up too high previously!
Brilliant test the one on the mat looked so much clearer all the way through the test.
I'll be definitely adding the mat and the resin to my cart. I'm in Manchester and it's great to find somewhere that is fairly local.
Awesome thank you 😊❤️✌🏻
Caroline you are far closer than I am I think 🤔 though my geography has much to be desired 😂😂😂
I enjoyed making this video tbh 😀
Glad it’s helped 😀👍❤️
Oooooooo Wendy wow what a difference ! Incredible 😱😱😍😍 thanks so much for this xx I dont even have one of those thermometers 🤣 I'm slacking lol great to see this x
Thanks very much honey. I love my mat and bought another one too 🤣 but I do have a cold house at night 😂😂😂
@@Toonpish its shocking to say it out loud ... but we have not turned our heating off since October 😱😱😱😱😱 we set it to 20 .... so the house never drops below x and I cant afford to eat .... but thats OK 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol. I can't sleep in the warmth, I need to be as cold as possible. We never have the heating on at night 😂. I'm sure you will be able to eat soon Hun 😉 😂😂😂😂
It gets down to mid 40's F [7-8 degrees C] at night & mid 60's F. [18 degrees C]
Question! I can NOT do resin within my tiny apartment. No way to get enough ventilation.
Could I cure resin on my porch if I used a heat mat & covered the mat & project with a box & put a towel over the box?
Ok. Short answer is yes, many people make curing cupboards , polyurethane makes a great insulator, and a heat mat would work.
However, I’ve never actually tried it and I would recommend checking there is no fire hazard 🤷♀️
I hope this helps you in some way ❤️❤️
I ended up building a 450*450 box that is 600mm high, so it can fit my pressure pot if needed. A temperature sensor monitors the enclosure and turns a pair of 30W globes located at the top on and off to keep it between 25c and 35c, and an over temperature alarm is initiated at 38c which turns off the lights, stops them turning back on, and notifies me via text. Current monitoring on the 2 globes notifies me if current drops enough so that it's likely one of both globes have blown.
Overkill, heck yes, but I am new at resin, and plan on pouring and curing resin in my shed where temps regularly reach lows in the single digits during winter here in Australia.
Oh boy you have been busy and sounds fantastic at that 😀😀😀
You should have perfect resin pours at this rate 👍💜
Brilliant 👍👍👍
Hi Wendy, Thanks for sharing your videos, I was wondering what surface you placed your heatmat on? I have been trying to find some information on it but no luck so far. Thank you
I use a Formica kitchen top in my craft room and it’s heat resistant. But you can always use a kitchen worktop saver which is as good 😀💜
Is your resin ready to pour?! My stuff isn’t setting it’s always gummy like or a bit sticky!😤😤
Sounds like the mixture is out somehow. 😳
Check the mixing ratio as it should not be like that.
What resin are you using?
I just got a heat mat, a smaller 7w one. I don't want to turn up the radiator in the room just for resin. So I'll be doing a few experiments of my own, hope they turn out as well as yours! I'm in France and our electricity is 220/240, I have no idea if kw change compared to 110/220?!
Oh I don’t know either 🤷♀️ I’m no electrician. But I hope it goes okay for you 😀😀 good luck and have fun 👍❤️
Hi the mat in your video says 20w but the link is for a 17w ?
Then I may have linked a different one. But it will still work 👍❤️
Brilliant video, I have purchased the heat pad through you. x
Aww thanks very much indeed. Hope it serves you well 😁
If I wanted to fill the whole mat up with molds, the fact that the mat has a different temp the closer you get to the plug would it effect the curing of some of the pieces toward that end? Great video.
In the video I tried to find the warmest part of the mat to get a better comparison to the cold of no mat.
I use this same mat right the way through the cold months of the year and use every part of it.
And I’ve never had an issue with it.
So in short
It shouldn’t make any difference 😀😀😀
Thanks for your question
Happy crafting 👍
@@Toonpish Thank You!
Wonderful video, thank you! ??? Will the resin not on the heat mat ever solidify/cure all the way, or is it a lost cause? ???
Yes it will but takes longer. But the curing mark will stay. The only way to get rid of that is to sand it down to below the surface 😀😀💜👍
Thanks for your answer!
Hi the link for the heat mat isn't working
It only works when it’s in stock.
There are plenty on Amazon to choose from though 😀
Type in reptile heat mat and have a gander 👍
Hope that helps 😀
Great information, thank you. 😊
You are very welcome 😀💜
I need one of those for my feet instead of a hot water bottle. Well done Wendy
Thanks Terry, why not, reptiles lay on them lol and dogs 🤣😜👍
I have no free rooms in my house and I don’t want to get my family I’ll do I was planning doing this outside would it be safe? Would it work? And I live in the uk so ya know
I started in my shed. The pieces kept going cloudy and rough looking. Some came out ok, but I had no idea why. The reason I now know is that temperature and humidity. These need to be constant for good results. So in the summer months you won't have much problem. As long as it's a constant temperature above the recommended temperature of the resin you are using. I ended up in the extension room. But it's totally up to you ☺️
Thank you so much for sharing! I believe “Our World is a Shared Experience”…

Hello and welcome to my little channel 😀😀😀
I hope you enjoy my content and feel free to ask questions 💜👍
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your shirt your wearing in this video!! Also, thanks for making this, I was rather curious!! Just about to purchase one myself, so good to know my dear!! 1❤️💙💜
Thank you Christi 😀😀😀 a heat mat changed my crafting throughout the winter for sure. I would definitely recommend it if you have cold weather 😀❤️👍
I use UV resin, so I work with small quantities. Bubbles aren’t really a problem in general, but they are with my mix-ins. I let the pots sit so the bubbles can rise….and use a lighter for bubbles once poured (those little micro bubbles). I just got a coffee cup warmer that I am going to try and see it it will encourage the bubbles to rise.
It should do, as it warms up the resin it becomes a lower viscosity so air can float to the top quicker. 😀💜
Hi I’m from India.
Today I was searching for the reasons why my resin products are turning sticky on top and I’m so inspired by this video. I really got the answer here!! Can you please help me out? The above mentioned link isn’t working. Can you share the brand of the heating mat?? I want to buy in India.
Hi there Ayushi
The heat mat is a reptile heat pad. I’m sure if you search on your local Amazon you will find plenty to choose from. It’s best if it has a thermostat or control for adjusting the temperature. The one I use is not available at the moment but it’s certainly not the only one on the market and I have no affiliate with the brand.
I’m sure you will find what you are looking for.
Good luck and happy crafting 😀👍
Thanks!!! I will purchase one and see how well it works. I live in USA Oakland, CA l live 8n a old house and my room gets cold. Thanks again Lisa
It will change your crafting in the old for ever 😀😀😀❤️👍
can You use heatlamp also?
Hi Judith.
A heat mat gives a direct warmth to the piece constantly.
Some people have heated boxes or even converted airing cupboards.
I’ve not tried a heat lamp, and no idea if you can control the temperature with it.
So honestly 🤷♀️ I can’t say.
If you try it, let me know 😀👍
Are you still using the mat to cure the resin projects?
Yes absolutely 😀😀 in the cooler months it’s definitely something I would recommend. 😀💜

@Toonpish Crafts Hi Wendy, my first time ever doing resin. I've watched loads of your video's which has spurred me on to now try. When using the heat mat does it matter if the silicon mat goes on top of the heat mat? Thank you, Ann.
I think I’ve just answered that for you 😀😀😀😀❤️👍
Also did you use the thermostat dial ? Just wondering if I do need one with a dial ?
I left it on the highest setting. But some faster curing resins may need a lower setting and deep pours will need lower temperatures. Hope that helps 👍😀
@@Toonpish Thanks so much
Np
That was very interesting and informative Thank you.
My resin is cold because I’m in Portugal and at this time of year it’s cold in the house .
I’ve been warming it up before using it but it’s still curing a bit cloudy and I often have that mark in the middle too so I do think I need a heat mat . 👍
Glad it was helpful! it has definitely changed the way i work in the winter for sure. Let'sResin now sell a heat mat and as I have been using it this winter I can say without a doubt its far better than the ones I used in the videos. I hope you find what you are looking for and happy crafting.😀
OMG I can’t thank you enough, I’ve been having sooo much trouble with vista turbo due to blush 😢& I’ve lost all my work due to it.
Some resins blush more than others but they just need a helping hand 😀😀😀😀 hope you have more success in the future 😀👍❤️
My resin is 4 months old and has a 6 month shelf life. Trouble is it’s going to be below freezing overnight next week. With a heat mat, I don’t have to wait until late May when it’s 28 Celsius!
Exactly 😀😀 I think it’s a must in winter 😀😀💜
Just to answer a few questions ... I own reptiles ... and do resin .... a reptile heat pad should never be laid flat on a surface ... it should be stuck on the underside of a piece of glass ( they come with self stick adhesive ) and the glass should be an inch away from the surface you set it on .... it is very very rare but if not used right it could start a fire ... just letting people know ... I can across your channel and I love your work ... It is amazing :)
Thank you so much Patti
I had no idea about that so thank you so much.
I will definitely think about how I use it in the future.
I’m glad you enjoy my channel
You have made me smile 😀😀😀👍❤️
I need that mat! and not only for resin! Your comparison was wonderful and I'm glad you did it! The resin is a good one and I like it a lot! XOXO
Thanks very much indeed Clarissa, what would you use the mat for? 👍😁
@@Toonpish SNAKES of course.... HAHAHA! xoxo

Good afternoon all! Noob here - My sister does pours and she has a resin heating mat bundle from Amazon (no reviews) on her Christmas wish list. The Amazon mats max temp is 149 degrees F. I see some other products for plant seedlings made by Vivosun that are larger but do not include a silicone mat and can only reach up to 104 degrees F. Is this difference in temp negligible or should I get the mat with highest temp? Your knowledge is much appreciated! We're in Houston TX btw - 🌵🔥 currently 26 Celsius - humid, rainy, and sunny all at once today
Sounds like you are struggling with all sorts of weather 😀😀
The most important thing I have found with a heating mat is a temperature controller and or thermostat.
Sometimes you don’t need it too hot.
Warm is good.
So it’s your choice,
But I hope that helps 😀❤️👍
@@Toonpish appreciate the prompt response!
Hi Wendy, Great demonstration. I have a home brew kit rubber heating element wrapped around the outside bottom of my pressure pot and it works a treat. Great video Wendy. Take care. Cheers, Huw
That is a brilliant idea hun. I have my pressure pot pushed up against the radiator lol. Thanks for the comment 😁👍
would this help with UV resin projects? It takes longer to cure when it is chilly outside..
No sorry. You need a strong UV lamp for that 👍😃
I’m not sure what resin you use but when my house is too warm my resin cure a little but is bendable but when it’s colder it get rock hard
Oh well that is unusual. It really does depend on so many things like humidity and the type you are using. And what I call warm maybe cold to you. Thanks for the comment .👍
Much Gratitude and Appreciation Beautiful Souls
You are welcome
I'm ordering a lunchbox that can heat up. Saw on a video.
Oh that sounds perfect 😀👍
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
You are very welcome Cindyleah. Have a great day 😘
14W sorry
It will still work, just won’t get as warm.
The original one I used is great so if I was buying again I would get that with a thermostat or at least a dial to have some control.
I will check out the link though.
Thanks for pointing it out 😀👍

Question Wendy: do you have to warn up the mold in advance? Also should you leave the mat on the whole time the piece is curing? Thank you!
Hi there 😀
I have the Let’sResin mat now that you have said you have and have used it just once. I left it on for the first 3-4 hours then turned it off before bed but left the mould on the warm mat.
I did actually put the mould on the mat while it was warming before making the piece. But I don’t think it is absolutely necessary 😀👍
@@Toonpish thanks so much! I think I need to try again just with some test clear resin to see what results I get. It's freezing here currently so I'm looking for any solution here haha!! Thank you!

Nice to share and save money for others that use resin
It's horrible to loose pieces not cured properly. I hope it helps someone 😁👍
I use the exact same mat. I cover my pieces too as I find the humidity also makes a massive difference. I work in a heated outdoor pod but it’s quite a lot damper than the house.
It’s the scecond time I’ve seen that resin. Does it yellow quickly do you know?
Long term I don't think anyone can say as it only came out in September. But ATM I've not noticed any yellowish tone at all. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment. 😁👍

I have been watching your amazing creations and I have been trying to make coasters with epoxy resin for a while but my resin never cures or one coaster will cure the rest won’t. I can only cure my resin overnight and my spare room is the only place I can do my crafts but in my whole flat my rooms go between 19-21 degrees Celsius, do you have any advice or should I just give up 🤔. Thank you Sheena
The heat mat will definitely help you or a curing machine if you can get one.
If neither are an option
Then get yourself a polystyrene box with a lid that will hold the temperature.
Don’t give up

Thank you for the video! What is the other pad you placed under the heating pad? I want to make sure I don't mess up my countertop.
The heat pad I used doesn't get hot enough to hurt you, just warm. but in the video I think I put a silicone mat underneath is case of spillages. Silicone is so much easier to clean. 👍😃 Thanks for the comment, have fun 👍😃
@@Toonpish Hi Wendy, my first time ever doing resin. I've watched loads of your video's which has spurred me on to now try. When using the heat mat does it matter if the silicon mat goes on top of the heat mat? Thank you, Ann.
Not at all.
Silicone can withstand heat
And your mat will be warm not hot 👍😀❤️

@@annashcroft1219 no problem 😀
This is brilliant!
Thank you so much Terry 😀👍
Can I use my mat it's temperature is 45degrees ct
Please 😁🤔
That is really hot? 113 Fahrenheit. You only need to warm the resin 20-35 degrees is recommended. I would say no to 45 Celsius it would make it cure very fast and you will have problems because of that. Hope that helps.
How long should I leave it if I use an alphabet mold
You can leave it on a heat pad for the full cure time. But that does depend on how hot the mat you are using gets too. Hope that helps
Amazing video, I never thought to get one! Does this help with amine blush? In your experience of course :) x thanks!
Yes it does help. Personally I have never had blush while using the heat mat. I can’t say it will never happen again but it definitely helps 😀👍❤️
@@Toonpish thank you for your reply! I don’t use moulds, only open bezels so going to give it a try on top of some heat proof paper. Hopefully it will work the same as your silicone moulds doX
Nice one Wendy 👍
Thanks very much Steve ❤️
When using a heat mat would you place something underneath if you are using a glass table? Would you place a coaster mold directly on top won't it damage the mold? Thanks
Glass tables are made from strong glass which should withstand heat ie if you put a hot dinner plate on it it won’t shatter
Therefore it should be okay but you should do your own research to make sure
The silicone in moulds can withstand a lot of heat as it can be put in a dishwasher or oven and won’t melt so the heat from a warm heat mat shouldn’t effect it at all.
I can’t take responsibility for anything though as I’m sure you are aware it’s your choice and decision
Hope this helps 😀👍❤️
@@Toonpish of course I understand just wanted an opinion as wasn't sure. Thanks again for helping.

You don’t read directions? All epoxy resin clearly states on the instructions that it needs a steady temperature for curing,Pouring etc.
Oh It does !! I do read instructions ofc. But sometimes you just cant get that steady temperature can you? Winter is a difficult time to create resin pieces and I am simply trying to help crafters who don't know there are other options.
