I just use a systemic on everything and the only pest I’ve ever had to worry about are spider mites. No more thrips, mealy bugs, scale, aphids, or whiteflies. Just mites and keeping my plants humid, well hydrated and a bit of neem oil every few weeks drastically reduces the instances of mites
It's so true about the monstera deliciosa. I've been through two that both ended up with thrips, even after seeming fine for so long. I have two top cuttings left that I'm going to keep in water, which will allow me to rinse them off much easier and hopefully keep the bugs at bay!
Thank you for this video. Interesting. I wish pests were not a part of growing plants. It is what it is. The more plants we have, the greater the chances are that we will experience the pest challenges. Preventative measures will go a long way towards keeping our plants healthy. May we all have good luck in this area! 🌿🥰
Very helpful, thanks! I want to start having indoor plants but I'm afraid of pests, that's why I do a little research before. I had a String of hearts I the basket and after watching this, I removed it! Is this list about all house plants or you didn't include succulents? I wonder if they are the best choice if one wants houseplants less prone to pests.
Mealies are the only problem I’ve found with hoyas, but it’s fairly uncommon for me to see problems with them. However, my FLF and monstera are perpetually riddled with thrips. I’m continually treating those two or using preventative measures.
Nice video about pests! Actually, pests normally come in with the plant. Especially if you are buying from big box stores which have much cheaper plant prices than actual garden centers that carry houseplants. I have had Monstera for coming up to three years and no thrips.........:)
Can you use castille soap on a string of hearts? I have a 30x loupe to check for pests and do not see anything but I know everytime I am on the lookout for another soh I always see spider mites! I am trying to prevent issues with mine but am afraid to treat. I tried a mix of soap and rubbing alcohol and it hated the alcohol!
alocasia/colocasia are also spider mite magnets, we actually have a hard time keeping them pest free at the greenhouse. ivy is another one, it sells really well, but honestly, i dont think it should be a house plant at all.
Love u & ur videos .. ti be quite honest growing up my aunt had a carnosa up in her piano window for as long as I can remember & I got my first carnosa In 1974 had never heard of mealie bugs until I started buying mote hoyas on the last 7 yrs .. strange i think
This is such an interesting and important topic that everyone can benefit from. I’ve been wanting to compile this list for a while now. I just got my first string of hearts and it already had a little crawler in the soil and some holes in its leaves so now I know to separate it from my other new plants from that order and preemptively hit it with dem systemic granules baybeeee
Best way to prevent bugs for me is neemoil. I spray all my plants every 2/3 weeks with a light neemoil solution. No more bugs on my Alocasia's, Verrucosums and other plants.
I have tons of prayer plants and I haven’t had a ton of issues. I think palms are wayyy worse plus you have to get every frond which makes it so much harder to get rid of the spider mites.
what timing! I just found spidermites AND thrips for the first time. 6+ months in plant parenthood i knew it was a matter of time.. but 2 in 1 day? =( spidermites on my siltepecana and then a single thrips on my adansonii, and 2 on the syngonium next to it. i'm sad about it but i'm just gonna tackle it like an infection. daily treatment until it's healed. i love my plants. it's worth the trouble.
My alocasia stingray always has spider mites 😒 but... it still grows so I treat it every couple weeks and make sure it never touches other plants. Not having pests is an unrealistic expectation. It's more about managing it and not letting ur plants stress u out! 🤪 Great video as always! 👏🔥💚
@@annieanna2900 I clean the leaves with an alcohol/ water/ dish soap mix using a soft makeup brush. Then I spray the whole plant including soil with Captain Jack's
I had a pretty bad thrips infestation last year and since then I can’t get rid of them 100% every now and then I find 2 on a plant and I don’t even know where they be coming from anymore XD
The only plant I have that you mentioned is the cactus and my cactus already had a mealy bug infestation. You didn't miss on this one 😉... I sprayed that cactus down with Captain jacks dead bug brew and haven't seen anything since.
Alocasia Polly is notorious for being a spider mites magnet. It is hard to keep happy as a houseplant. I’ve had mine for a year and it lost all its leaves. Not sure if it was spider mites or the fact it didn’t get as much light. I always seemed to find spider mites now and then even when I cleaned its leaves every few weeks.
I've found my pollys absolutely love passive hydro. I have 3 of them in pon and not only do they pup all the time, they keep spitting out leaves. My biggest one is pushing its 5th leaf with no signs of losing any.
@@howmygardengrows3080 do you keep water reservoir in pon or how do you transfer soil plants to pon successfully? I found my plants declined or rotted when I put them in homemade pon substrate.
@@cricketjem119 I just cleaned the roots of soil, not as harshly as is needed for leca though. I do keep a reservoir. I have 1 that has a wick to the pon and 2 where the basket touches the pon a bit for wicking. All 3 are doing well. Mine is a diy pon with general hydroponics nutrient solution. I really don't have a super bright home. Two of them are near north facing windows and one is near a west. I also have alocasia maharani, silver dragon, and black velvet in pon with wicks and they do well also. I'm not sure what the difference is. I really haven't had many issues with soil to pon transfer. There is always some root die off, but once acclimated, they do great.
Pests (cue the horror movie shrieking violins)! The spider mites damage my crotons and one finally died. Thrips tried to take out my philodendron selloum, but fortunately, it survived. I lost a Crassula to mealy bugs. I agree with the statement that almost any plant can get almost any pest!
For me it’s alocasia family, I always find thrips here and there, even if it’s living with my other plants in a terrarium, no other plants are getting thrips, just the alocasias!
That's weird... I haven't had that many pests on those plants (except the monstera - definitely gets thrips every few months). But all my calatheas have had spider mites only about 1x, with the exception of one of them.... but they went away with continued spraying, and i havent had any pests of on my hoya compacta, nor had any on my string of hearts or even my alocasias.... I found that giving plants really high light usually tends to stave off bugs - I think they're just a lot more healthy that way... I also live in zone 10... so ambient humidity is always at over 40%.
One time I found a bunch of mealys on my singular cacti and I just stuck it in a bucket of water with pesticide mixed in and they all died immediately 🤪
I like the information you are sharing but I wish you'd get to point quicker. Too wordy for me, I don't need a long drawn out explanation. I will watch more if you can scale back the talking.

I found that the calathea white fusion was definitely a spider mites magnet. I've decided to just admire it from a distance now lol.
Totally agree with you!
Hahahaha totally agree!!! Are beautiful on other peoples houses 😂
I've never had spider mites on mine, and it's the most beautiful plant I have. I think everyone's individual environment plays a major role.
White Fusion is even more spidermite prone than other Calatheas it seems
I keep hearing about my Hoya compacta being a magnet for bugs, but so far so good! Aaaaand I probably just jinxed myself 😣
I just found mealies for the first time ever on my compacta that I’ve only had for a few weeks 😭
1. Monstera deliciosa
2. Hoya bella
3. Calathea
4. string of hearts
5. Cacti

Thank you, my old man had grown crazily. I watch his fuzz. Thank you! Love you 😙
Gosh thanks for this video! Thrips on my monstera never seem to go away ruining my beautiful leaves. I thought it was just me.
I agree with all of these! You did miss one.. Ivy. They are spider mites magnets as well. I will never own one again.
3 years pest free and I recently got a jade plant and oh boy I got mealybugs on it and all my “string of” plants 😩 so overwhelmed…
💚lovely video. Lucky I never had issues with my Monstera
Very helpful, thank you. I've heard it a lot about Calatheas, pretty but no thanks. I treat all my plants regularly hoping I never see anything.

I find succulents are pretty good but they are prone to mealy bugs... I would say though that mealy bugs are the easiest to get rid of.
Mealies are the only problem I’ve found with hoyas, but it’s fairly uncommon for me to see problems with them. However, my FLF and monstera are perpetually riddled with thrips. I’m continually treating those two or using preventative measures.

Hoya Bella- mine is an aphid magnet. I have to constantly treat it. No other plants near it have them.
Kitty is just gonna kitty 🐱 lol 😂💚💚
Monstera deliciosa is a carrier of the thirps, because of its beauty l find it hard to part with it

I have tons of prayer plants and I haven’t had a ton of issues. I think palms are wayyy worse plus you have to get every frond which makes it so much harder to get rid of the spider mites.
For me, it's Syngonium and spider mites. I have some serious unresolved trauma and resentments to process 😂😂

Thank you for the heads up I have learned a lot from you

100% agree on thrips and monstera deliciosa. But my biggest spider mite magnets are alocasia.
The only plant I have that you mentioned is the cactus and my cactus already had a mealy bug infestation. You didn't miss on this one 😉... I sprayed that cactus down with Captain jacks dead bug brew and haven't seen anything since.
Indoors, I've only had issues with Calathea (spider mites). Outdoors is an entirely different story. I cannot get a handle on the spider mites!
Thank you so much....
Vinchi, myfavorite aroid,, cat😁😁👍👍
I’m so surprised about the hoyas! I don’t think I’ve ever had bad bugs on mine. I better check 😆
What about Stromanthe Triostar? Care? Pests?
Super useful video. Thx.
The first time I had thrip was on my Monstera deliciosa and my second time seeing them was on my adonsonii
I also think Ficus Benjamina are thrips magnets. I always found some on those that were planted in the neighbourhood when I was a child.

What's everyone's favorite preventative?
Neem old and mosquito bits
I'm so lucky I've never had to deal with pests!

Watching this as I clean the leaves of my plants due to spider mites lol😤
Spider mites are the worst, I have been fighting for a year now on our banana tree , they just won't go away ! I have tried everything! Lol

Yeah sadly my pitcher plant got ruined by thrips 😩😩 .
🥰🥰🥰GOOD TO SEE YOU🥰🥰🥰
What is this above your site with Lulus tickets????
ONG the mealy bug on the thumbnail alone gave me goosebumps 🥶I hate pests!!!😭
This is very helpful especially that you are showing the damage caused by the pests!
I lost 3 hoyas to pests this year ! No more Hoyas for me :(
Ivys get them avoid ! Threw mine away 🧐
+1 for monstera thrips problems
My Hoyas are prone to scales and obviously my Alocasias to Spidermites 😭
I'm surprised that Monstera is on the other n the list. I'm glad I don't have mine anymore ( I didn't love it )
Mealy bugs killed my whole orchid collection… noice XD
