    #10's are good to around 50-55 yards... Good for up close work, especially for a youth... Jebs makes awesome tubes.

    Crazy! Absolutely crazy patterns at 40! I shoot the 9.5's with a Code Black Turkey, good to know if for some reason the wife has a swing and a miss, the second shot is not out of the question. In the 40 plus years i have been chasing these jokers, I dont recall taking a bird at 40. 20 to 35 is about it. Bit these patterns for the sub gauges are just mind blowing. Great vid!

    We did some patterning with the Birchwood Casey targets yesterday and I thought the same thing about the performance. Not as good as it used to be. I did shoot some Salt Creek Custom 10s out of my 28 ga yesterday. This is just an old New England Arms 28 single shot with a fixed modified choke. Pretty impressive numbers for that combo, I think I would keep my shots under 30 with that gun but I wouldn’t have doubts taking it hunting.

    Another great test.
    Same gun with salt creek #10 last year with trulock.515 I shot one at 43 yards with hardly any flop. Shot another one at 25 and he just folded! No way I would push those loads. To 60 yards. Also you brought up a point of less total numbers with 9.5 shot. I noticed last year with a box of viper 9.5 that I got a lot more flyers on the edges. Maybe that’s the cause.

    Great patterns on the turkey targets. My biggest reservation is how well these small shot would penetrate especially at longer distance. Like you I sometimes make a mistake and take a shot further than I thought it was. Perhaps you could shoot into something and compare the penetration.
    I am 70 and the carrying of a lighter subgauge definitely appeals to me if the small shot penetrate adequately.

      I know a #9.5 will kill a turkey at 40 yards out of a .410 for sure (may have done that last year :D). I just looked this up. Not sure how completely true this is, but "General rule of thumb is that it takes anywhere from 1.25” to 1.75” of penetration in 10% ballistic gel to kill a turkey and a #10 pellet has 2.6” penetration at 40 yards." This was this guy's math with his 1120 hand loads. Supposedly these #10 are going 1038 fps, so I don't think it would be that far off.

    I finally got my sa-28 all dialed in. I tested all straight 9s except for the salt creek 1 5/8 9/10
    I tested the stock choke, patternmaster 515, and indian creek 520.
    The 9/10 put up 390 and the rogue 9s came in at 342, both higher with the IC 520 than the 515.

      Well, good luck!!! Come back and let us know if you get one! I think I’m going to start with some Fox Trot 9.5 with the Jebs. Then see how it goes 😊

  • @joshuafindley791
    @joshuafindley791 3 місяці тому

    The reason why i chose to hunt with straight 9s vs 9/10 is strictly because i do worry about kinetic energy from the 10s. Theyre supposedly adequate to 50 from a 28ga

    Clearly, forty yards is still the standard. But my rule of thumb is to have 100 pellets in a 10 inch circle to be effective. That may not be correct, but that is what I came up with.

      That's a super tough question. We've had such good patterns with so many of them - depending on the choke and the gun. I have killed turkeys with Verdict, Viper, and Apex. But, might give Fox Trot and/or Rogue a try this year.
