- Harley motorcycles are now safer thanks to insurance companies and the government. Rider aids on your Harley are taking away control of your motorcycle, even if you're a seasoned rider. It's all for your "safety". If you're an experienced rider you know your throttle input and braking when and where it's needed. With "rider aids" these features are taking your control away in the name of safety. Like any well intended feature these can lead to a dangerous situation for anyone that knows how to ride a motorcycle. You're expecting one thing from the bike and the computer says no we are doing this. Not only do you lose control of your bike you pay for it whether you want it or not.

Do you want rider aids for "safety" or do you prefer complete and total control of the motorcycle yourself?
We wouldn't need rider aids for "safety" if people would pull their heads out and get off of their phones! 😀

On my 2005 Fatboy, its minimal - a windscreen, a sissy bar, and basic soft saddlebags. No full fairing, no heating elements, no sound system, no cell phone mount, no cup holders, etc. I don't need them and think they just distract from feeling your bike, and enjoying the road and countryside you're riding in. I never thought about it before, but 2 years ago someone called me "Old School'", and I proudly accepted the label.
Ditto, we are a dying breed. Also,Not much time left to buy a pile of parts and making a running, no nonsense bike.
@@martincvitkovich724 👍Good to connect with another old schooler. With all of the mods to my bike, I have a pile of spare, still usable parts that I saved. I was going to start selling them, but changed my mind and now have them saved in a corner of my garage - for when they are no longer available and/or "just in case."
I love the FatBoys, those are some seriously classic bikes that have stood the test of time.

@@docracer7519 I never sell any of my 'excess parts, unless I sell the bike. Never know when a part may fail, or you sober up and say "I think I should put those parts back on the bike"

My number one concern when I start my ride is getting back home so I can do it again. I think I'm thinking of safety but maybe I'm confused. I have been riding for a while and have bikes with and without all the electronics. Do we really need this stuff? Maybe yes and maybe no. I think insurance companies like it.
@@GixxerFoo I completely understand your point and have ridden a long time on many bikes without it. At one time the electronics came at a price so it was only available on premium models. Today this stuff is relatively cheap and the software had gotten considerably better. The electronics has gotten so good in the last couple of years, the rider may not even realize there was an intervention. Insurance companies and the government love it. Why? The simple answer is statistics along with science.

I have vintage British motorcycles with no safety equipment. They are pure motorcycles. Drum brakes,glass in speedometer, no reflecters, mirrors, and no turn signals. No pollution controls to atone for people driving cars. Yes already paying for features to work. It's called a monthly payment! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I’m with you. I learned how to control my bike. We learned how to ride off road and worked on our skills. I don’t need a computer making on the fly decisions for me when it doesn’t have a clue what I see. In the other side, there are owners that may need this kind of help and perhaps they shouldn’t be riding. As always, I appreciate the information and your input. Thanks brother.
Thank you for supporting us! I don't like it because if you've rode for years you know what to expect and how to handle it. When the computer takes that away from you it can be dangerous in my opinion.

I don't see myself ever buying another brand new Harley. I don't like the features, I don't like the prices, I don't even like the look anymore. Harley can keep these bikes.
That's a big consensus with a lot of riders! Harley isn't selling a bunch of new bikes these days!
Spend what amounts to an entire year's salary for the average American to buy a bike you don't like the look of, can't fix when it breaks down, can't fully configure without additional licensed software tools, and now don't even obey the actual inputs you give them. What's not to love??

Might want to think about some life insurance too... When my ex-wife saw me come home with my first Harley she immediately took a life insurance policy out on me... Notice I said "ex-wife"... 😁
This is why I ride a 1995 Electra Glide Classic and a 2000 Sportster 883.
Rider aids are for people who shouldn't be riding in the first place. I started riding when I was 6 years old, and pain was my best teacher. In the early 90's I was riding 2 stroke mx bikes and it did teach me that I could never have a crotch rocket.!! I get too crazy with that kind of power. Harleys and age have mellowed me out a lot but with motorcycles the best way is the old school way.
Kids and some adults these days never learned the lessons and explosive two stroke dirt bike would teach you real quick!

The only “Aid” I want is a fuel gauge, and an oil pressure gauge. I don’t want abs, ambient temp, tip sensor, hell I don’t even want a kickstand switch.
My kick has had the tab bent over. Was like that when I got it.
I remember when a fuel gauge wasn't standard equipment... 😂
50 years ago my first bike was a Kawasaki 500 triple Denco chambers. 63 now and many bikes later, I love the visceral feeling of raw a machine without rider aids. I learned alot from those ass pucker moments.
Denco was the expansion chamber of choice 100%! That bike weeded some people out! Flexy frame, crapola suspension and handling, brakes were a joke, but the motor was an absolute rocket ship!

I have a 2017 heritage. It came with cruise control standard. at first I didn’t like the flyby wire, But I like the cruise control feature. The flyby wire has been a proven system. So now I accept it. But I do agree with you too many electronics is not good.
Same. My 2018 Road King has cruise control. I like it and I like the fuel injection. I only ever rode carburetor bikes until the Road King. But I don’t need a bunch of other stuff on the bike. I like working on them.
Flyby wire isn't bad at all, it can use a little tuning from the factory to make it just right. Now cruise control, I love it, can't beat that one all day long!
Yeah, hard to argue with cruise control. Sure beats the hell out of a throttle lock.

Those older bikes got everything we need and they will get the job done!
That's what I recommend. I won't be to far in the future that people will be begging for the older bikes ,much like the do now. Except it won't be for bikes that are 30,40,50 + years old. It will be forgives that are 10-15+ years old.
This why I have no bike newer than '04. No nanny state crap on my ride. Just pure enjoyment, and watching the world as I roll through.
Anything 06 or earlier is pretty simple with the carb on a Harley!
Unsafe used to be the lure of the motorcycles but now a days the big scary motorcycle has been wimpafide 😞

Bikes are more than I want to spend these days. 2013 Heritage here. No ABS, throttle cable. Bought it new and it still serves me well.
That Heritage has everything anyone needs!
Been riding for 50 years. you nailed it. Have a 83 cm250 84 magna, A 95 dyna wide glide, 2005 sportster 1200 custom and a 2008 FLHTCU. I do not want anything computer controlled just for the reasons you mentioned. If I want the bike to go, if I want to fish tail a bit around a corner I do not want a puss bike that will cause me to fail control. Over the years I found they all handel different. the ones I have are all restored as new. The electraglide is my last new one. 2008, just for the reasons you said.
Older bikes just got more valuable for everyone trying to get away from all the tech features in the new bikes!

I think not of people are missing the bigger picture here. Our government is promoting a lot of these technologies quietly behind the scenes. Joe Q public wants to blame Harley, but it could well be that the feds are really pressuring them to adopt these features. Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and others all offer these features. It's going on everywhere, and don't think insurance companies aren't involved in all this. My dad worked for Kerr McGee Chemical Corporation in the 70s. My dad got summoned to Oklahoma City for a meeting after Jimmy Carter got elected. James Schlisinger, Jimmy Carter's Energy Czar was holding meetings with each oil and gas producer. In this meeting Mr Schlisinger informed Kerr McGee management team that the United States was going to start importing oil from the Middle Eastern countries to strategically deplete their energy resources and to preserve ours. Remember OPEC and the gas embargo? All of this came from this Carter Administration energy policy. So please consider that the majority of these decisions by Harley are being pushed by National Highway Safety Administration policies!!!
I would love to understand. Jimmy Carter was inaugurated in Jan 77. The Arab oil embargo happened in 73. I remember it clearly. The gas lines were very real. I am confused.
It happened before Carter. The EPA was started by a Republican. I dare you to look it up.
The gold standard ended in 1971. The petro dollar began in 1973 during the Yom Kippur war to steer around the oil embargo.
All those extras at a huge cost takes away from the point of riding in the wind.
I love being in control not the vehicle controlling you.

That's what I love about the Softails! They haven't integrated all this nonsense into those just yet!
Traded my 2011 for a 2022 Road King Standard. Could have gone either way but opted to pay for the RDRS. Two reasons; TPMS and Hill Hold. My knees are shot and the TPMS gives me a little piece of mind on pressure without having to kneel on the concrete floor. Hill hold helps quite a bit when two up. Again, knees are an issue. The rest of it isn’t a big deal to me. Been riding on the street since about 1979. Do I engage rain mode while in a heavy rain? Sure I do. Layer of protection if you ask me. I’ve been at it so long that I ride as of these things aren’t even there but piece of mind is a good thing.
Agreed. The only thing I would lean towards is TPMS because of how hard it is to access the rear tire without pulling a saddle bag
TPMS is a good things, I like it but I hate the fact of having it programmed. They charge the crap out of you for it and the tools to do it aren't cheap either.
@@GixxerFoo Yeah that's a huge issue with a lot of this stuff. If you look at EFI vs. carburetors for example, EFI should actually be a dream. Assuming the software isn't crap (and fuel table calculations are really pretty simple; you can get the software right), it should be so much easier to engineer, tune and work on EFI bikes. And, it is --- except there's this little tiny part where everyone selling the tuning tools wants to bend you over a barrel on the tool price and then salt the wound by marrying it to your bike to boot.
It doesn't *need* to be this way. But it is.
Find a kick start, foot clutch hand shift, manual spark advance panhead & then reassess your riding skill level. Yeah drum brakes on a motorcycle were all kinds of fun.
That's back when you really had to know to ride!
Integrated brakes were introduced on Honda Goldwings 40 years ago and they worked great. It was virtually impossible to lock the rear tire.
I've been riding Harleys over 30 years but my current ride is 18 years old and I like it just as it is. The EFI is about as much technology as I want.
I am the same way, I like the efi for ease of starting and cold weather but that's about as far as I want to go myself too.

Well said, I am a fan of technology when used in the right places. For example, I have 2 Ducati’s (2018 959 Panigale and 2019 Panigale V4) and 2 Aprilia’s (2022 Tuono 660 and 2023 Tuono V4) which are loaded with tech, and they should be. Even for my wife she’s on a 2023 Honda Rebel 500 ABS, just the right amount of ease and safety. But for my “Harley” experience I choose a 1996 FatBoy, a 2007 Buell Blast, or a 1949 Indian vertical. To me that’s what a grand American motorcycle should be! Harley (and others) shouldn’t be over complicated and feel disconnected. I’ve ridden my friends newer (2021+) CVO’s and you can keep them… my Evo FatBoy gives me more enjoyment by a long shot!
I have RDRS. Necessary no. Beneficial yes. RDRS actually saved me as i caught a slick area of road in rain going highway speed and didnt even fishtail at all do to the RDRS system. So ill take the safety features. Tire pressure sensors suck though, i ended up using manual guage to check anyway. You turn off the rdrs before every ride if you really want though. Rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.
There are some benefits to the features and they can save you if you run into a situation like you did. You can turn them off but it can be a pain time after time.

My HD was a '73 FX completely stripped and kick only!! The only issue was when it got cold. That lesson came quickly, when I was late for work and I didn't get a chance to park in the garage at work and It froze overnight. I was traveling long distances to and from work. The first week I owned the bike I put 500 miles on it and it never got above 0° !! The creature comforts were in your head, you got it going and you kept it going!!
I rode mine when I moved to the West Coast and didn't have a single issue with it, I had the bike stolen a few months after I moved and didn't have a way to get another one!! You needed to get used to the controls for the bike, it didn't show me how to run it. I started it and told it what it was supposed to do! That's what used to be called riding!
The stripped back bikes are where it's at!
One more reason I will not be purchasing a new Harley. I’m ok with improvements like bigger brake rotors, but I can do without all the electronic stuff. Just more stuff to break!

I had to pay the Harley dealer to turn on my CB and WHIM. They charged $60 for a 10-minute job. When I jot my license in 1970, a speedometer and turn signals were optional.
That's exactly what they are doing is charging an hour of label to flash the computer and program electronic accessories. It literally takes a few minutes and an hour of labor is about 100 bucks or more depending on the dealer.
My Old 68 FLH has drum brakes and I never used my front brake much. Sometimes you almost had to sand on the brake lever to stop the the thing ! Thank god the thing don't make all that much power. But it was easy to work on no computer! You could pretty much fix any thing on the side of the road. There was more than one time I had to adjust the points on the side of the road. With a book of matches and the old ladies finger nail fill and 10 min I was on my way. I now have a 2015 FLHTCU Its a very nice motorcycle and can ride it all day with no trouble ,but if something happens you my be calling AAA to get home. It's almost useless to even carry any tools, almost a waste of space. P.S. still have my old Harley sorry to say its just collecting dust. My plan is to get it running one of these days ! I'm thinking my FLHTCU maybe my last bike, the newer ones are to complicated, coast way to much to fix and you are pretty much limited to what you can do with your very expensive Motorcycle and that's a load of SHIT!!!!!! Keep up the good work.
Ran with spool hubs for decades. Never had a problem.

Abs braking in cars has alot of loop holes and that's why I disable them in the winter so I can stop at lights and stop signs. Stability fights my corrections I do, so off that goes. I can't even imagine having all that on a motorcycle 🤦🏻♂️🤦♀️🤦
I've rode some newer bikes with all that in it and it's weird. You try to do things and you know what to expect but it doesn't happen. Really messes with the handling and everything.
My first bike was a BSA Lightening 1967 got it in 68. It had a single leading shoe front break. You grab a hold of that baby and it did very little.
Those bikes really taught you how to ride!
I don't need my truck to tell me that the transmission is in gear. It doesn't need to tell me that the parking brake is applied because I applied it. Follow the money. Insurance and motor companies are in cahoots

Lots of older bikes out there that can do everything you need, without stuff you don’t want.
I love the older bikes, we just didn't realize how good we had it at the time.
I hate the linked braking. I have asked how to get rid of it, and the dealers say they don't know.
Basically you can pull all the brake stuff off the bike and buy all new brake stuff and run your own lines 🤷♂️
That's all they would have to do is manually remove it and run a brake line, it's not rocket science. The problem with the dealer is they follow the manual and procedures and don't deviate from it.
Owner of 4 motorcycles , 89&95 springler,73 yamaha 360 RT , 71 H1A KAWASAKI 500 These new bikes make me laugh ,they take all the fun out of wrenching and motorcycling.
That 2 stroke 500 separated the men from the boys real quick!
The ABS linked brake system that came "standard" on my 2014 Limited sure saved me from hitting a deer. I know I couldn't have stopped nearly as quick or short without that linked brake system. Some safety features aren't worth the investment they cost or add to a bike but I wish all 3 of my bikes all had the Harley ABS linked brake system.
They've slowly worked it into all the tourers, back when you got your bike and bought the Limited it meant something! Those bikes were loaded to the hilt for the long haul, now they are trying to pack that into bar hoppers.
One rides to avoid constraints like seatbelts,air bags,traction control,abs,RRS and here in Illinois helmets.
Don't get me started on helmet laws, it starts with having to wear a helmet and then they tell you what kind of helmet you have to wear.

Starting riding motorcycles in 1969 or so, starting buying and riding Harley’s in 1977, I thought I had seen it all, but wait, there’s MORE ! I have 2 Harley’s now, 02 heritage and 17 road king special , but I put more miles on my 13 KLR, no electronics, carbureted and BULLET PROOF ! My 2 cents

I have a vacuum suckers for bleeding brakes, even ABS brakes. It sucks brake fluid through the system and will remove air from the ABS too, without a special tool or the ABS going crazy.
That's awesome! I have one of those two and I love it, makes life so much easier!
Paying more for colors is already crazy! My new car has electronic safety systems that have almost resulted in accidents
Harley has played that games for years, figured out black is popular and changed the free color to grey. I did hear the cost of the colorant for black did go up big time but who know.
The new glides , in my opinion have too much tech on them and the prices reflect that . I rather be riding my old 08 Fat Bob that doesn't have much but fuel injection and triple disc brakes

Great points made here mate. I don’t want all the extra stuff like tyre pressure monitors etc because it’s a waste of money. Besides, you should check your bike over before riding anyhow.
Just going over your bike is a great way to really get in tune with it too.
I like your stuff. I can solve all these problems for you in 2 seconds. Buy an older Harley and put a new crate motor in it. With the extra money you save, you can buy a wheel of cheese too. I've been riding for 16 years, and I am not a great rider. 1 time, my traction control /abs saved my ass at 70ish mph on an exit that was way sharper than I was expecting. It's worth the money in my opinion.

The addition of some things are group specifically good. Like the linked breaks new riders and maybe oLder riders with say mild complacency. But yes generally the descriptive word of operator is accurate. And in Comichusetts driver laws are heading this way to.
Complacency and dependence on safety features is my concern, you don't pay as much attention to things like many drivers in cars do these days.

I love my Sporty! Riding in the rain does suck! ABS and a TC are nice out on the highway, but the Sportster can be made into anything!
Lol, i didnt grow up riding a motorcycle nor did i grow up in Congress. I bought a bike and started riding. Thats how you learn.

I have the 2014 Rushmore project and I wouldn't want it any heavier.
They actually made the bikes lighter on the 24 models, not a bad thing.
abs on every motorcycle is important staying right side up and stopping is always better than crashing and if the stoppind distance comes down to inches you will thankful you have it
The ABS is a good things, I rode one with ABS once and it does work pretty well.

I think my RDRS system has helped me a bit on my 2020 RG. I am an older rider of course (70) and I need help where I can get it. Some of the new add ons I wouldn't use but, my anti-lock brakes and I think are fine.
The rider aids aren't a bad thing but people are going to rely on them more than they should.

Disc brakes? I started riding (legally) in 1972. My first few bikes were from the 60's and early 70's. Drums only. I've never been the "safety" guy. Rode most of my life with a novelty helmet. I agree with all of your points. You never gain any skills if the computer makes all of the decisions. Takes a lot of the fun out of it. If you want to be safe, buy a Volvo. BTW, I saw somewhere that they were going to put air bags on European bikes.
Honda already has an optional air bag on the Gold Wing, it's getting crazy with all the safety features.
Looks like a 2023 will be the last Harley Year Model I will buy for a long time.
I miss the days those all the safety features were optional, you could get it loaded out or stripped back to just a basic touring bike!
This is a really interesting question. I would agree that the amount of electronics that are on Harleys is too much. I can't see why you would need ride modes. I guess it does take away from the riding experience. Good video.
Thank you! In some ways it does improve the rider experience but for the most part it takes the skill out of riding.
I think the point is getting more money but the excise is safety. Honda still sells bike with drum brakes, and a carb (honda navi).
All the safety features in the bikes have really driven up the cost not just on bikes but cars as well with all that stuff.
Most new riders are government run public school grads. They don't have the computing power upstairs so the manufacturer puts it in the bike instead. Insurance companies are pushing this also. My 2 cents. Ride safe!

I agree. Most of this stuff on bikes is totally unnecessary and costly but at the same time i have experienced the benefit of anti-lock brakes a few times so I'll say they are worth it.
Antilock brakes are pretty nice, they come into play when you really really need it!
i wanted my new 2021 road glide special without a few of them and could not get it. at this point i am ok with heck. but i really dont know when these features kick in so there is that.
Yeah it's hard to get anything stripped down, you would of had to of gone with the regular Road Glide to opt out on all the rider aids.
Yes, Harley is adding to many features, drive modes etc. And if they start adding fees for certain features, they will lose customers. For me, I do like ABS, needed it more than once, and electronic cruise control is also nice to have.

I have a couple of Harleys from what I consider to be the apex of their production years 2009-2016. One is bare bones FXDWG and the other is a Road King with ABS. The ABS is nice on the RK because it is heavy and this stops back tire lockups... but anything beyond that and you get digital garbage on your bike that you do NOT want. IMHO
That's the year range where I think things were just right with Harleys models! I've always said those years they had the coolest models without being super over advanced.
I'll say it again...I'll ride my 2009 Heritage into the sunset...96cc engine basically all stock, except for a, screaming eagle compensator and a S&S cam plate kit.
You got everything you need to do to that bike taken care of! That's really all they need to be absolutely trouble free.

The rain mode is cool but idk what it does really. Rain means easy on the throttle til u know how the surface is.. but the TC is pissing me off when it kills my power when I’m getting on it (124ci cr482 cam) ., yes she likes to party
I have had the traction control go on and it didn’t just kill power it gently did it I didjt even know .. just did bc the light flashed on.
other times it just cut power and was abrupt.
Some of the features are pretty handy, not gonna deny that!
You obviously haven’t heard what the EU is now trying to do with bikes over in the EU , you are not going to be allowed to repair a bike that is over a certain age it’s going to be crushed, the only time you will ever see a motorbike will be in a museum, I will try and find the link for that I read earlier today on UA-cam summary from the UK,

My '20 RG came with linked brakes as a "standard" upgrade. No cost to turn it on. In the two emergency situations I remember being in I noticed the, for lack of better words, interference from the system. Was it nice? Surprising would be a better descriptive word. Did it save me? Probably not. Would I spend money to turn it on and pay for an ongoing subscription? NO! Does it have ABS? Yes, never noticed it though. Does it have cruise control? Yes, but I've never used it. Does it have the big screen with the stereo, big screen and whatever super duper features? Yes, but I don't use them, I still have to look up how to change the clock in the owners manual.

Well for a Dyna most prefer the 555, it has a bit more top end and little lighter on the bottom. But the Switchback is a little heavier than the rest of Dynas centered around the touring, the 222 comes on earlier with more torque down low but doesn't give up much on the big end. I like the 222 myself but they are really close in comparison.

I think you meant that modern systems will not allow senseless input data to translate into the output of the bike. however you quoted something that can be interpreted a bit different by saying the new bikes "will not let you hurt yourself" but i know what you meant. I just think we should be careful generalizing complex systems like that, but I get how yt is and you are doing a great job starting discussion on this topic so thanks. All this makes sense on paper but not in reality as you mentioned and I fully agree.
Thank you! I am worried new bikes are going to make people over confident and really think they know what they are doing when it's all the bike. People riding over their heads and getting into a situation the computer can't correct and real skill comes into play.
It's all about the all mighty dollar! HD used to stand for Hundreds of Dollars. They need to change the H to a T because it's thousands now.

I mostly agree with you. My first Harley was the 1979 sportster (the bastard). I like the abs, could care less for the tire pressure monitor. My 2000 flht (113,000+ miles) was a standard (no radio) was my daily rider. If I had known they were coming out in 2019 with another standard I wouldn't of bought my 2017. I'll stay old school...
Going this weekend to pick up my 05 883. Hasn't been started since summer of 22, what would you suggest I do before starting/riding. I plan to drain gas, and check the air filter for deterioration.
You'll probably want to clean the carb, pull the plugs and put a little fogging oil in the cylinders and bump the engine over with the plugs out. Change the oil and the primary fluid, that's what I would do with fresh fuel in the tank.

Problem is they charge to unlock the power and I’m sure they sell the info to your insurance company so they can up your insurance premiums. Onstar is doing this, and it affects your insurance rates.
I never trusted that Onstar business, I always wondered where that data fed back to.
@@GixxerFoo : ask my mom. The Chevy dealer called her and said they see it’s about to change your oil, she asked how do u know, they said onstar. Also her insurance has almost doubled this year because she has been traveling quite a bit. I seen on the news that onstar was selling info back to the insurance companies. I’ll keep the ole 06 e glide klr 650 and the mighty victory vision. No tattle tale crap on those.
My thoughts are if you gotta have all that on a motorcycle to help keep you from really enjoying the ride, then you shouldn’t be riding. And besides if the cages aren’t paying attention anyways, all that safety crap ain’t gone save you getting hit by one of them. So I generally see as a means to just lock riders into paying for something that should be on the bike anyways for the price they’re charging for these new bikes nowadays.
The electronic driver aids in cars have made people pay even less attention these days!

I think that there are a lot of "professional," riders out there that may be Doctors or Dentists and not real riders that could benefit from those add ones like help automaticly braking through the Twisties, or an idiot light that tells them they have a low tire when they should be checking that themselves periodically before they go riding. But I'm not okay with extras that I know I won't use, cruise control, etc. Great video as always.
I don't need a light while I am riding down the road to tell me I got a low tire. You can feel that pretty quick, lol had it happen once.
