  • There is much confusion around medications to treat obesity. We all have questions like, “Isn’t taking medications to treat obesity the easy way out?” or “Won’t I regain weight if I stop taking the medication?” In this OAC Health Talk, Dr. Nisha Patel, a physician in the field of obesity, culinary medicine, and clinical lipidology, will help you separate fact from fiction by breaking down common myths and misconceptions about anti-obesity medications.

Very useful information, thank you! The "...easy way out..." meme is something often attributed to WLS as well and equally ignorant and frustrating! It made me think about my time as a substance addiction treatment counselor, working with patients who had various options to help them recover. Some of those options included using Methadone at low doses to offset physical withdrawal symptoms of harsher, less monitored substances. No one said that "using methadone is the easy way out of withdrawal/addiction recovery...."! This is the same principle with medication for obesity treatment, IMO! I guess it will just take some time for society to realize it and catch up! Thanks again! I especially appreciate the reinforcement here that obesity is a "chronic disease" and needs ongoing treatment! As one managing this lifetime condition, it's helpful to be reminded that it's NOT just a matter of personal choice!

Agree! Health is not a game where you get bonus points if you suffer or struggle longer. If weight is affecting your health and there are treatment options for you there should be no shame in seeking those out.

So much misinformation and clickbait headlines in the news about Wegovy, Ozempic, etc. it's helpful to have some facts. Thank you.

I’ve taken Dexedrine,Topamax/Topiramate,Ozempic, Mounjaro/Tirzepatide, and Wegovy. I have Hypothalamic obesity, and as a result, I am not leptin deficient. I am leptin resistant. The current medication I’m taking, that which is the last one I put in the comments, is so far the best. But I should also be on a triple monoamine reuptake, inhibitor, that which would also speed up the metabolic rate. Thank you
