I didn’t expect to understand this, but if you learn scales, chord progressions, and chord extensions this really starts to come together. As someone who comes from a church background with jazz leanings it’s super cool to see this stuff be explained and for me to understand. I feel like practicing piano right now 😂
I have been looking at a lot of videos on upper triads over dominant chords. Trying to improve my jazz chops. I like your gospel approach. Great video!
Have you ever wondered about ways to make your dominant chords sound more full and interesting? Are you stuck playing the same chords and want to break out of that box? Are you looking for a simple method to quickly change how you play dominant chords? Well in this lesson, we cover a simple concept, that will completely revolutionize your approach on dominant chords!
If You show us upper structures for say “Great is thy faithfulness” than I would say couple it with a jazz standard such as “Girl From Ipanema”. This would give a solid foundation across the board. Especially since Gospel and Jazz genres mesh sooo well. Thank You for all your Video tutorials and work studies I’ve learned a great deal
Such finesse- thanks for getting past the nuts and bolts of the theory and putting everything in context so thoughtfully. Really helpful to hear your process and the way you intuitively feel your way through things in a way that’s not purely technical.
When I learned about upper structure triads years ago, I felt freedom and creativity for the first time. Knowing tensions or “color tones” as you refer to opens up another world. Traditionally I would also say the natural 7 on the dominant chord is to be only used in passing. These are great lessons.
As a bass player I feel sometimes my ears naturally want to approach certain sounds in somewhat restricting ways. Listening to you break down all these upper structures and hear you play them in context is extremely helpful, thank you so much for this content
Easily the best UA-cam channel for anyone trying to develop their piano skills. Keep it up man. I think it would be interesting to see a video where you record yourself improvising, and then go through it and explain the theory behind it. The scales, chords, runs, progressions, etc. Thanks again.
Don't think I've ever smiled and enjoyed a lesson video as much as this one. Found you tonight and instantly subscribed. I love the warm bowl of soup sound too.
Hello Emmanuel! We are actually working on a huge improvisation course for everyone! Please stay tuned to the channel, and thank you so much for the suggestion!
Thanks Austin! I really appreciate you! I did a video a while back on how I developed my technique. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/QjslQYvwPAw/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for your lessons. I'm an intermediate to advanced jazz guitarist and I must say that your key points for keys helps me understand jazz guitar chords a great deal. And not only that, but I've become emboldened to practice playing keys as well, albeit at a much lower level than I can play guitar. I'm a composer too and can say that these chord sounds are the roots of so much composition. Just hearing 'em gives inspiration and spark! Thanks Cory.

Wicked lesson Cory, love those stacked chords man. Cory you need some T-shirts man for your channel man, I'd definitely buy one or some! Be blessed Sir!
Topics for future videos much needed: Key changes/modulations in the smoothest way possible. I think most know of the fundamental ways to change keys but I'm talking about creative transitions that put us in a different key without the audience even knowing. Common tone, modal interchange, theme oriented, etc. This is one topic on the internet that still lacks greatly. It seems that I spend too much time working on transitions because I just never feel it is at its best. Would like to hear/see your approach.
Hello mister Taylor. I really appreciate your tutorials. One of the best on YT. About triadic upper structures on dominant chord; I was wandering why you did not mentioned the b3 major (Eb) and the 6 major (A)? Bill Evans often used the 6 major.
Thank you so much! Those other ones are my favorites as well! I decided to only mention 7 in the video, but in the sheet music, I actually share 12 of these upper structures.
Another great vid my friend! Always was a fan of of the 2 major chord over dominant but never thought to explore all of these other triad upper voicings. Keep em coming Cory!
Thanks Brad! I'm glad we were able to give you some more options! We actually put several more in the sheet music.... So if you want even more, definitely check that link out in the description box.
Corey! I recently started watching your videos at night and can't decide whether to sleep because it is so relaxing or absorb as much info as possible. Wonderful music. What is the name of the software that you use that tracks your chords and what keys you press? I'd like to get a similar setup going for my piano at home.
It is a software program called Chordie by a guy on UA-cam named Matkat Music. Here are my affiliate links to the software in case you want to purchase it - (For Windows) gumroad.com/a/612676723/ZBQGv or (For Mac) gumroad.com/a/612676723/lmSkV
Thanks for your channel, you're a great teacher and pianist! I love the passing chords video, very good explanation, brillant ideas. Upper structure is a stunning concept. I'd like to ask, is that working only on the dominant chord (C7 in F)? Could it be use on other degree (FM7, Gm7, Am7 and so on..)? Thanks a lot !
Hey Alain! You can definitely use upper structures on other chords, but they will be different. Maybe I can do a video on that! Thanks for reaching out. Be Blessed and Happy Practicing!
Thank you Corey for your reply! I tried out some on other chords, but was not sure of what I was doing !😅 (Actually I play guitar so it's a bit tricky). If you have the time to post a video on that part, it will be a great help! Good continuation for your work!
I don't have any tips currently outside of listening and learning the record verbatim. Deyquan Bowens has several good videos about aux playing. Check him out!
I found something interesting: "But exploring upper triads comes in handy for composing and chord substitutions. Like if you’re working on a piece with a plain old Cm you can try swapping it for a Eb6, AbM7, Am7b5, or F9 since they all share a triad and see where that takes you."
Exactly! That idea is the reverse in thinking, but it utilizes upper structures. Our idea is to keep the left-hand bass the same, and change the right-hand upper structure to whatever you like. The idea you found is very common in reharmonizations and composing, where we keep the right-hand the same, and change the left-hand bass.
Hello sir, I have been playing piano for three years, im pretty developed right now. I understand theory. But I would like to make my chords sound better. I am interested in trying one of your courses. Would you recommended that I start with the “ Chords Galore Course” ?
Ok Willy Wanka and the Chocolate factory. Song “Pure Imagination” writer Bob James. I’d love to hear lessons through that beautiful melody! It really sounds like your avoiding it 🤣. Can you do a traditional Gospel video. Most musicians can play well but seldom do you get that true capture of the traditional chords and sound. Walkups and walk downs and the common sound of classical, jazz, and blues to form Gospel is what I'm talking about.

at the end when you where harmonizing that melody....C to C# i was bbegging for you to go to the D instead back to the c...as in all you need is looo ve...lol
Hey kuku! When I say b6 major, I'm ONLY referring to what the right hand is playing in relation to the bass. I'm not talking about the entire chord. So if you count up from the root a distance of a flat 6th, in your right-hand play that major chord. So in this example, the left-hand bass is C, so if we count up a flatted-sixth, we get Ab. So I'm saying play THAT major chord in the right-hand, while your left-hand plays C-E-G-Bb. In regards to a 6 vs 13, that's a completely different topic, that wasn't what I was talking about. C6 for example is just C-E-G-A, where C13 is C-E-G-Bb-D-F-A. Hope this helps!
Cool stuff man. My 2 cents: know your target audience. With these advanced chords and tempo do you really think there are listeners who need counting?... sixth note.. let's see.. 1 2 3 4 5 6. Nothing personal, pretty much all the youtubers do this, I just don't understand why :)
Thanks Karoly! I agree, those that are on this level probably don't need the counting, but for those that aspire to be on this level, they might need the extra counting. I definitely understand it can get annoying for someone on an advanced level. I will work to remedy this annoyance.
my 2 cents: If you want to help those people count the way YOU count. Going to the 6 is: going 5 in one step (5th, which you really should know by heart) and then 1 more step. I bet that's the way you learnt it... a long, long time ago. Keep up the vids, you're doing an incredible job :)

25:13 - flat 6
I don't understand when 6 stay 6 and when becomes 13
13 is 13 with 7,without seven 13 is 6 :) right?
