I have to say, without your video it would be much harder to change the light bulb. Thank you. Trickiest part was to turn the light bulb assembly, I have big hands, I finally had to ask my coworker to help me out here. And to Toyota engineers that design this light assembly, i really wish i could break your arms. You had to be some special idiots to come up with something like this for stupid licence plate lights. When i went to university to get my engineering degree if i were to design something like this they would have kicked me out of school and i would not have received my degree. Thank you again.
For those looking to do this, instead of a Philips screw driver, you might want to use a 10mm socket to remove the pull strap. Mine was on super tight and it felt like it was going to strip out, the 10mm made it super easy.
Turn to the left = counterclockwise. Thanks for the video. Everything went smoothly until I tried to remove the license plate lights. They were stuck fast and with the tight fit, I couldn't generate enough torque. At this point I became concerned that I misunderstood "to the left." I found another website that said "counterclockwise!" Armed with renewed confidence, I used a medium-sized plumbers wrench on the passenger's side light and a small wrench on the driver's side (which was less stuck). Coincidentally (or perhaps not), the passenger's side bulb was also stuck fast. I ended up using small needle nosed pliers to break the seal... Thanks again.
Yes, my sockets were stuck very hard too. I had to use needle nose pliers to force them counterclockwise. I wasn't sure if I was going in the right direction, since the liftgate was upside down and I was using the pliers from the side.
Yes, this procedure works. In my case, changing the bulbs in 2017 of a 2005 Sienna, turning the bulb holder was difficult. Big hands and tight spaces don't mix well with sharp sheet metal. The holders were very much "stuck on" and after more force than what I thought cheap plastic would take, the holders turned. They turned a little but that was all that was needed. Reversing the procedure put everything back on. Thanks for the hints. Made all the difference...
Excellent information. The bulb holders were tight and I couldn't turn them to get it out so I used a spark plug remover to turn it gently to the left. They both came out easily. Thank-you very much for your help. Toyota wanted $50!
Great presentation. I never would have replaced the license plate bulbs without watching this video first. Be sure to not break the only two hook like pieces on the big panel (at 2:44) as seen in the video.
Thanks for this video. I had to check a couple other videos to be sure this was right because I thought that surely Toyota would not produce such a poor design, but I was wrong.
Just look at all the Toyota door and hatch handles and starters that have failed over the last 20 model years and you have to start to question Toyota's American manufacturing quality principles. They need to go back to their roots taught to the Japanese by Edwards Deming who said. "The result of long-term relationships is better and better quality, and lower and lower costs." Japanese American manufacturers need to stop trying to be like GM who went bankrupt ignoring bad quality to temporarily increase production numbers.
Thank you Minh On for the video. It was very helpful to me when I had to replace those lights in my Sienna. Very delicate and tight space to deal with. You save me some bucks. 👍👍👍
Unfortunately, my lift gate has an extra support on the left side (in addition to the hydraulic supports) and I could not take it off in order to remove the side trim around the window. :( Other than that, good video.
Lot of work to remove panel and replace only two bulbs. I replaced all six under the panel, and put some silicone grease on the license bulb sockets, to make for easier removal next time.

Jose Dias Yeah, I think I gave a pint of blood getting the damn bulb holders out!
Jose Dias , you are right , I founded that it's easier for the small hands to do the job right .
