I miss Layne, but the truth is that William Duvall stepped into impossible shoes and has won us over with true charisma and sincerity. He is so legit and let us all give him some love.
You're god damn right. Many of their songs have the square-ish groove where it's hard to shine, but some songs, like Them Bones or Would - his drums do an amazing job, and show his chops. I feel like many people disregard the rhythm section which is a sin.
@@xavierlagore5569 agreed. Sean is really hitting the drums hard on this one and he is dead on perfect. He's what the band needs. He sometimes reminds me of a combination of Phil Rudd and Lars Ulrich.
Sean has a distinctive drum style that I dig, and his drumming is integral part of this band's sound DNA. Underrated maybe, but not underappreciated by those in the know.
Duvall is a rock star. He fits this band like a glove. Lane was brilliant but so is Duvall. Some negative comments on here about him. You should see them live.
As a black man who loves all forms of music these guys are bad as hell. Don't know a lot about Layne but William must be doing something right for Jerry & Sean to have chosen him.Keep rocking guys
Saw Duvall live this year, flawless. AWESOME REPLACEMENT, nothing more to say. Layne is irreplaceable, but I'm grateful AIC is still alive thanks to Jerry
People need to chill. Obviously Layne Staley, one of the (if not the) greatest rock vocalists ever, was going to be hard to replace, and damn near impossible to please the fans with his replacement. But sadly Layne's dead, and if Jerry hadn't gotten the band back together, with a new, great sounding vocalist, we wouldn't have had one of the best rock albums of 2009 - let alone this awesome anthem. Will's not trying to oust Laynes memory, let alone trying to replace him. He's a new singer, with a different style, and should be considered as such, and nothing more or less.
Just posted this on another comment but it applies here too: Duvall isn’t a replacement, he’s another member of the band. People seem to forget that Jerry is just as much a part of the vocal arrangements as Layne was.
It was so hard for me to listen to their old material with Duvall. But I gave a chance and listened to their new music and I was so blown away. I felt that Duvall was given a chance to stamp his own signature on their new songs. It made me appreciate the impossible shoes he had to fill.
0:11 True musicians you know...totally committed to their art. You have to respect that.Still one of my all-time favorite bands. Glad these guys still around, their music saved my life many times.
Dude. Walking up the ramp is fucking amazing. Mike is so right with all this. Hearing your guitar through the speakers makes you feel so powerful and alive.
Rifle Twist people say change the name but the albums they've made are worthy of the title Alice in Chains. Other band's have kept the name and I'm always first to criticize this however makes no sense to change the name it's still Alice in Chains so much when I first started listening to them I confused some of the modern material for the 90s stuff.
Can't replace Layne, nor did they try, wisely. They chose a super talented singer and guitar player, William Duvall, to be a bandmate, share (wisely) the frontman job with Jerry. Listen to William SLAY the high vocal parts on this heavy tune... watch him perform and fluidly play guitar, and tell me he's not a f-ing Rock Star. Bravo!
This A.I.C. song the chord progression & harmony vocals makes for some great hell yes hooks. And their pulling it off live with that slight pitch bend thing ! If I know guitar players the way I know guitar player's . If Jimi Hendrix was still alive he'd might say Hay could I jamm with you dudes that pitch bend thing you do is fricken cool as hell ! Long Live Rock & Roll ! ! ! !
Duvall voice really harmonize well with Jerry Cantrell's voice, I think Layne Stanley would be proud that Jerry Cantrell is keeping their AIC music alive in memory of him,RIP we miss you, love you and will never forget you😢🎸😎😍🤘🤘🤘
AIC's studio efforts are excellent. Make no mistake. But how is it that a band manages to write songs that ALL sound better live? One of the many reasons why this band is my favorite.
I remember seeing duvall on a vid for the first time. Can't remember which one but it was during the time I heard alice in chains had found a new vocalist. It had duvall come out and hit those vocals from this song, coming out from the shadows as the song started. And still to this the day that shit makes me want to grab my air guitar and bellow. Lol The guy is bad ass. Still love and miss layne but this guy was meant to be in aic.
Love this tune, has that old AIC sound that brought them to their success,. And William fits in like a true rock star,. Of course they couldn't replace Layne! But Jerry knew what he was doing when he chose William,
Man, I bet that's hard as shit to play live. With two guitars playing that riff and having to harmonize at the same time. Great song; superb execution.
As an avid AIC fan from the very beginning I am sick and tired of people with their negative crap about William Duvall. Layne is gone he is dust! He did that to himself and left us on this rock all alone. Seriously was he thinking about you and worrying about your life or anything? Nope he wasn’t! Layne while in Alice In Chains was superb, He was the master, However another master took him out and he is gone! What was AIC to do? Go belly up because of Layne’s sickness? Hell no man! You move on and keep going. Layne would have wanted that I assure you! People don’t even realize that Mike Inez isn’t even original to AIC so where is the head hunting there? William Duvall had big shoes to fill coming in and although he can never fill them at least he is up there doing and carrying on the bands name and legacy and also with the monkey on his back that you fans put there....Give the man some slack....He has done great thus far.
they are playing Copenhell and I'm definitely going to see them again. They were so good at this gig in Knebworth 2010 ... what a crisp sound and good musicianship they showed off. I was hooked.
I like it. You can never replace Staley but to squander the tallent of Cantrel and not let the music live on would be a crime. Staley lived and died on his terms, this is the price of freedom of expression and choice. The spiritual war we all fight, the blessing and the curse of our vices have brought us the ultimate joy and the ultimate sorrow. We who live for the sonic charge, feel the groove with our soul and understand firmly that there is a world beyond this one are the most blessed indeed.
He pretty much is alice in chains, layne didnt write much, jerry wrote the majority of lyrics and music, he is too alice in chains, as to what roger waters was to floyd, chief song writer and lyricist
I disagree completely. He actually does a fantastic job singing live. Sometimes his voice may waver, but he's much better live than most bands in the realm of the music similar to what AiC play.
Did he say, "we might see the Stooges, later?" Oh, man, I saw Iggy & The Psychedelic Stooges in about 1970, at Cincinatti Summer Pop Fedtival. By the way, AIC kind of went through loss of their singer, similar to Pink Floyd losing Syd. This lineup is amazing!
Duvall was basically thrown to the wolves. It was literally make or break for AIC after Staley's death. Struggled at first, but he found himself within the band and they're still around because of it.
Bottom line is, Jerry and the rest of the band are musicians. AIC wasn't just Layne's band although that's instantly what you think of when you hear the band. They couldn't remain idle too long, musician's have to play, regardless of the personal tragedies that plagued AIC and I give them all credit for continuing and making damn good music. Plus they look like they're all having a great time, let them be happy.
My take is that Layne can never be replaced but as a fill in this guy is good! It'll obviously never be the same but no one can control that. It's no one's choice but the band themselves on weather they should continue on. I just saw them at 98 rock fest and they were awesome and on key in every song! So pipe down everyone!
when i first heard this song on the radio i was like LAYNE! i couldnt tell i was sceptical at first about the new singer, but i think im going to go buy black gives way to blue now
People got tour for years like 300 days out the year for 20 to 30 years party harder than any human on earth and see how good you sing at that age rip scott
they're headlining rockfest this year, i'm stoked! and just wait, here in like 5 or 10 years people are gonna accept the new aic and say Will is a good replacement for Layne.
I miss Layne, but the truth is that William Duvall stepped into impossible shoes and has won us over with true charisma and sincerity. He is so legit and let us all give him some love.
I totally agree
Duvall is so good in his own way. He blends in with AIC really well.
talk about AIC with the Layne s hand and with the William s hand is like talk about the Bible old and new testament
But These Guys & Nirvana Pearl Jam Soundgarden L7 Stone Temple Pilots Will Always be my favorite Grunge bands
That's so true. I saw them live and it was AWESOME!
I miss Layne. But lets be honest, this song is so fucking good.
One of my favorite
Sho respect.
its an excellent song
One of my faves!
You can almost hear Layne
Here's a much needed shout out to SEAN KINNEY.
His smooth as silk laid back groove is a huge part of AIC's huge sound.
Sean Kinney is AIC
You're god damn right. Many of their songs have the square-ish groove where it's hard to shine, but some songs, like Them Bones or Would - his drums do an amazing job, and show his chops. I feel like many people disregard the rhythm section which is a sin.
@@xavierlagore5569 agreed. Sean is really hitting the drums hard on this one and he is dead on perfect. He's what the band needs. He sometimes reminds me of a combination of Phil Rudd and Lars Ulrich.
his snare is legend
Sean has a distinctive drum style that I dig, and his drumming is integral part of this band's sound DNA. Underrated maybe, but not underappreciated by those in the know.

supernoah71 I cant wait down in Atlantic city NJ!!!!!!!!!!
Duvall's a fucking badass.
supernoah71 Duvall is just as fantastic as Lane. Both vocalists are superb.
Absolutely man!, Duvall was born to be a frontman and when you see him live you understand 🤘🏻
supernoah71
Maybe was one in a million, but Duvall is special. Great fit
As a black man who loves all forms of music these guys are bad as hell. Don't know a lot about Layne but William must be doing something right for Jerry & Sean to have chosen him.Keep rocking guys
Them keeping Alice In Chains together, Keeps Layne alive........Keeps his music, his songs going on... Its a good thing..... Love You Layne
This band never gets old and they sound so good here. The bass guitar is really audible here too. Just don't tell Lars.
That bass is thunderous
It's nice seeing Jerry at the front
Its his band.
Always was his band, no offense to Layne but jerry wrote most of the music and lyrics, its funny most people dont know this
Read their album credits, jerry is the lead singer.
God listen to the chunk of that bass!!!
Hell yes !
The engine of AIC!
Mike Inez is a fucking chad
Saw Duvall live this year, flawless.
AWESOME REPLACEMENT, nothing more to say.
Layne is irreplaceable, but I'm grateful AIC is still alive thanks to Jerry
Remember, he doesn't replace, he fills the gap and he does damn good job, but hes not a replacement
They really need Brendan Maier on lead vocals for the older songs!!
I wish layne had the chance to experience this 😢 to watch the band grow
Sean Kinney knows where The Pocket is from every degree, 360o!!
William DuVall is awesome. I love their albums with him on vocals.
Mike looks so happy all the time ✌️
why wouldnt he? he plays in AiC
One thing I've gathered for certain outta this Jerry can nail it live. His vocals are spot on.
Love William's addition to this band, and I'll bet Jerry is too.
Such a awesome song, i like how they keep the vocal harmonies this good in a live concert.

So true after 4 years.

Just posted this on another comment but it applies here too:

Some annoying people are only happy when they are moaning about stuff.
Man, I feel so bad for hating Duvall in that time. Thanks God I've matured and noticed that his a great singer
It was so hard for me to listen to their old material with Duvall. But I gave a chance and listened to their new music and I was so blown away. I felt that Duvall was given a chance to stamp his own signature on their new songs. It made me appreciate the impossible shoes he had to fill.
Mike is such a happy guy, really lovable dude :)
Jerry no matter what age, still looks like he's in 1996. Sean for that matter too.
Have you seen Jerry lately looking a little long in the tooth but Sean forever beautiful
Love the way their 2 voice styles blend. Awesome .
Chris G It matches perfectly. But Layne's and Jerry's harmonizing is another level. William is the perfect fit tho.
Tranthony 17
I agree . There's no comparison. Different , but equally good .
Chris G Glad AIC decided to continue
one of their best songs ever.
Sea of Sorrow is still my top AIC favorite.
To those who are hating; Would you rather these guys not make ANY music because the band does not have the original members? Be grateful.
Rifle Twist people say change the name but the albums they've made are worthy of the title Alice in Chains. GrayWoIf exactly! The new stuff absolutely does justice to their classic discography
I actually do.
Yes
as MOOTH ASsffNIKKEn.. AHHH,
Great harmonies with that big crunchy bass....

Just saw them in Oakland live and they blew the place outta the water! Duvall is Layne 2.0, Alice in Chains was his destiny.
Their voices go so well together!!!
Love this band and this song !!!
Jerry's still rockin his long, golden locks! LOVE HIM! LOVE THEM ALL!!!
Awesome live sound.......puts the "Q" in Quality, and the "C" in Classic......Rock !
Duvall, I had my doubts but he is the shit.
This A.I.C. song the chord progression & harmony vocals makes for some great hell yes hooks. And their pulling it off live with that slight pitch bend thing ! You hear him hit the high notes on Rain When I Die?? GREAT vocalist!!
Love this tune, has that old AIC sound that brought them to their success,. And William fits in like a true rock star,. Of course they couldn't replace Layne! But Jerry knew what he was doing when he chose William,
I am proud of AIC
I'm glad you can hear the harmonies in this video.
Dude this riff is so sick
Man, I bet that's hard as shit to play live. With two guitars playing that riff and having to harmonize at the same time. Great song; superb execution.
I'm glad they're carrying on after Layne's death. They still sound like AIC. Good shit!
Saw them on Sunday at Sonisphere, they were golden.
Why the fuck are you talking about Layne here? This is a Duvall/Cantrell song. Go comment in Layne's songs!
I'll talk about what I want Where I want! Get off!
Had this song stuck in my head all day! Great song :)
Saw them two weeks ago at Knebworth, they were fucking great!!!!
RIP Mike Starr. you will be missed
so i found myself in the sun oh yeah
hell of a place to end a run oh yeah
thats a deep ass line.
This is the new "again"
Jerry aged pretty hard in 4 years. I just saw them in Luxembourg back in June. He can still melt faces, though. They were awesome.
oui,h I. AOOUGH.!
It makes sense, he’s had a hard life, but I think he is still beautiful❤️
Partying hard, then going through sobriety, and still mourning the death of a best bud will do that to anyone
@@gaiarockchick in the 8 years since I posted it, he looks way better. Honestly, I think it was just his short hair and I was much dumber 8 years ago.
Rock stars. I have earned the privilege to see them live in Dallas in September.
They NEVER TRIED TO REPLACE LAYNE. They are musicians..this is what they do. You can't replace Layne...if anything they are honoring him.
I saw this gig and everything sounded fantastic. The sound engineering was top notch.
This riff melts my face every single time I hear it!
Guitar riff is filthy sick. I like it !
