I had a brand new canam defender hd10 where the fuel pump failed with 44 miles on the odometer. In with talking with a few different shops, it appears pumps were defective from the start. Still trying to get can am to fix it. Unfortunately it is outside of their narrow warranty window. But, what company designs and builds $18k machines and the fuel pump fails.
Mine is a 2022, bought it new about a month ago. It started acting the same way as we went up the mountain and passed about the 6,000 elevation mark. It serious cannot handle full throttle then. We also had the gas tank pressure start squealing to let fuel out at the higher elevations. Once home it seems to run fine but we've had issues with it not wanting to start. HELP....
Went to the dealer to get a new fuel filter.They told me they only sell the entire fuel pump with filter. What a rip off. There are after market filters available.
Originally I thought I had a fuel filter problem. After talking to a couple of michanics they suggested it was my evap tube. I topped off the tank the same day problems started. Any idea how to purge or drain evap ? Nothing came out.
Heh guys... I’m a garage guy myself, I have a 2018 Can Am Outlander 450 I’m working on and it’s driving me nuts... starts up and idles for a few seconds and backfires and dies. Starts right back up but only runs for about 5 seconds. New plug, (old one looked ok), checked connections, air filter all good. Took the fuel line off at the throttle body, cycle the key and get tons of fuel. I know fuel volume and fuel pressure are different tho, not sure I have the equipment to check the psi. Google took me to your video, you guys have a great site btw... very professional! Thx very much in advance if you have any suggestions. Scotty
Glad you got it fixed I don't understand why the dealer couldn't figure that out when you took it to them and wouldn't something like that be under warranty I have a Teryx like Garrett I think they come with a fuel filter almost positive like the one you want to install in your Rig
I believe I had two separate issues. The previous limp mode was self induced by me. I later discovered I had left a battery connection lose under the dash. The lose connection caused it to go into limp mode. I tightened it up, but didn't say anything to the dealer because I wanted them to go through their diagnostic steps. The gas issue they didn't catch because it took 30 minutes of driving to get it to act up.
Should have that in your title.. 2400 miles is better then listing to the ATV TV, Magazine people go on about 300 miles and how great they are! Awesome vid tracking the problem too btw.
What did you end up doing for a filter on the breather line? My 2016 HD10 XT is sometimes hard to start after sitting, turns on and off a few times before it wants to run and will bog down on initial take off after sitting then acts fine. Thinking I may need to change this filter as well...

Many people have experienced hard starts on premium. I'd also change the plugs to these is you haven't. Defenders are very short lived here in New Zealand. Gearboxes self destruct, engine very prone to dusting, steering racks failure, front diffs blowing all within 2 years. Beyond that chassis crack, engine dusting. The speedo cluster dies after hrs exceeded. Get rid of that filter and plumb in a Racor Snapp water trap sediment filter... thank me later.
Got a p1171 code replaced filter in tank can't seem to find any other issues but won't go passed 20 mph and not sure what else to look for now. Ideas? 18 defender hd10
I just purchased a 2020 can am defender hd10 and it has 35hrs on it and it just started stalling out under load. I can run it around our yard and no issues but once I take it on the road and come to a stop it will stall out and have a hard time restarting. The dealer has it now and said they can’t find a problem since they can’t replicate it so I guess I will be pulling my fuel pump when I get it back home. We live in a dusty area so I’m hoping that is this is the same problem.
Peter W they couldn’t replicate the issue so nothing was repaired however they told me to put stable in with the gas because apparently the ethanol that is in the gas has been known to cause issues with all types of gas powered engines. So after I got it home I filled it up with so high octane fuel and a bottle of stable and haven’t had any issues since. Not sure if this will work for everyone but it is worth a shot if your still having problems. I’m gonna keep putting a bottle in every time I fill up now.
i have a 2019 can am maverick sport 1000, keeps saying fuel sensor fail. changed the fuel, pulled all the plugs, put in a new battery. we had it underwater. where is the fuel sensor?
Fuel sensor is just the float system that shows you the fuel remaining in the tank, it's inside the tank and is part of the fuel pump assembly. Check the connections first
It wouldn't hurt to do that especially if you've never done it before. Definitely need to check your fuel pressure also. Could be a weak fuel pump too. In the end my issue ended up being the throttle position sensor. Had to replace the whole throttle body to fix it.
So did your machine throw misfire codes on the cylinders and put you in limp mode when this happened? Mine starts fine. And if I’m easy on the throttle up to 30 mph she is fine. If I give her the onion she goes into limp mode engine light comes on and gives two code. Misfire on cyl 1 and on Cyl 2. Any ideas?
After you replace fuel filter,won't crank the engine,.first turn the ignition key on and listen how the pump is pushing the gas and same time purge air out.do it 2 times and start engine back to normal Regards my Friend
I ordered the fuel filters off Amazon, they do not even come close to the BRP fuel filters. Cut open a BRP fuel filter and you will see how good they are,they protect your system. Taking me 3-4 weeks to get and 3 times the cost, but I think it is worth the protection they give.

How does the dirt get in the fuel tank. Do all OHVs get dirt. It should be a sealed system

I'd definitely get a reading on your fuel pressure. Once you know that you can go from there. Also check any fuel filters

Fuel pressure should be 51psi my guess you got a fuel pump that's Weak by the sound of it

I Have a 12 that is doing the same thing but I have 14000 miles on mine bought a fuel pump for it .

My issue ended up being the throttle body. The dealer replaced that and I never had an issue again

If you do replace it you'll need to have the dealer calibrate it for you

I changed the filter on mine too and emptied the tank of debris. I can't get it started. How did yours start?
It took a bit of cranking but it started.
