    This is my favourite meal. As a boy, I'd been to Switzerland with my school, via the train. After a week, we all arrived back at Euston station after travelling for hoursand. We had a couple of hours to wait before our train left for our home station. I had some money and was hungry. The cafe at the station was getting ready to close. I went in and the lady asked me what I wanted. I asked for beans on toast. The toast was perfect, and the beans had been in the heated container all day and were very sticky. I got every last one. It was a meal fit for a King, and I've loved beans on toast ever since.

    In my family in the US the beans are actually baked. We soak them, drain them, add pork (ham hock, bacon, whatever we have), finely chopped onion, sweetener (sugar or molasses), and depending on who is making it other things like chopped tomatoes and/or bell peppers. Then they go in the oven (or modern slow cooker) or Dutch oven over a campfire and are baked until tender. The recipe varies by part of the country but they always get baked.

      I know its a matter of taste and depends on where you grew up and what was available but i find Heinz baked beans rather tasteless.
      Grew up in New Zealand and always had local brand Watties ❤❤ ABSOLUTELY THE BEST
      Ive also tried just about every brand ive ever seen on a shop shelf -- didnt think much to them either.
      I have cooked Boston Baked Beans many times trying to replicate Watties, its not the same but is delicious 👍👍 more a one pot meal with ham hock, onions, bell peppers, , (I put carrot, celery, garlic and chilli- sometimes spinach) and make cornbread to mop up the sauce😋😋😋

    Grew up on beans cooked with dark brown sugar, dark molasses, ketchup, mustard, apple cider vinegar, and finely chopped onion. Sometimes minced garlic too. Baked for several hours in the crock pot, oven, or simmered on the stove. Super yummy!

    Here in the United States I can't buy the Heinz Beans sold in the UK unless I get them from a specialty shop that imports them. That means an extra cost for a tin of beans ($4.50 from Amazon) and I just won't pay it. Now, however, I guess I can make them myself, so thanks again Rik.

      Exactly what I came here to say! Although I do bake the beans on low once they’ve been soaked (about 3-4 hours at 250°F) with the sauce ingredients.
      I use America’s Test Kitchen method for soaking/brining beans and then baking them. It works for me every time and all I do is check and stir about every 45 minutes. Beans turn out tender, but not blown out.

      Heinz beans in the UK are about £ 1.00 or $1.20 but Aldi's do a tin ( Bramwells ) for 42p or 50c and they're a lot better than Heinz . Best served with cheese and onion pie and mashed spuds

      In Alberta these beans have increased from $0.59 cents to over $3.50. They now are $1.59. I made some with Molasses but I did not like them. This recipe looks like it will taste better. Also the last time I bought Heinz English style Beans there was an inch of liquid on top of the beans, shrinkflation.

    Hi Backyard Chef, personally Heinz have lost the plot now and they only make beans and sauce but there off their rockers personally 😅😅😅. I was in the merchant navy for over 10 years . We had a uk chef that did a spicy baked beans on fried bread recipe that blew away the crew including the captain. Our budget for food was pitiful so he would always order the cheapest baked beans in the uk and pimp them up himself. He gave me the recipe when I retired.
    Really simple. Fry white bread slices in lard. Spread with English mustard. Make beans. Cheapest canned beans, add butter or margarine, teaspoon ketchup and brown sauce, Jamaican pepper sauce ( like Tabasco), teaspoon honey or syrup, cornstarch slurry to thicken gently. Add more margarine .Add to fried bread. Depending on how spicy you want for brekkie a pinch of cayenne, madras curry powder or chilli oil. Eye opener after a bottle of rum and a long night 😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉

    Here in the US they are more of a side dish with bbq. I pre boil mine, then bake in a low oven for 7-8 hrs. with the sauce. Sauce is plenty of chopped onions, bacon, ketchup, maple syrup, brown sugar, mustard powder, Worcester sauce, pepper. They caramalize on top & are really delicious.

    I made these tonight-so good. The flavors are straightforward and balanced perfectly between tomato, vinegar, sugar and warm spices. Being mostly veg I eat a lot of beans-Southwestern/cowboy, refried, Cuban, Greek, Italian, Boston and 'raid the spice cabinet and make it up'. Thanks for giving me a new favorite.
    These are unfussy and just delicious. I had Heinz once ($4.50 a can) and wasn't thrilled. They reminded me of our store brand veg beans-thin and a little flat. OK but not outstanding. These are so much better, IMHO.
    Truthfully, I did bake them. It's 20 degrees here-Fahrenheit-the oven heats up the house and DH wasn't due home for a couple of hours. It thickened them nicely and left the beans silky. I made half your recipe and that was a mistake. One I will be correcting in the next few days. Now all I need is a loaf of white bread.
    Thanks so much for your efforts.

    OK, I get it. I chalked up the popularity of Beans on Toast to growing up with it, fond memories of Mama and Grandma-emotional/social reasons. I ate my much thicker beans on whole grain toast and it was fine. Then I thinned the beans and put them over white toast and it was transformative. Not kidding, truly greater than the sum of its parts. I'm a chemist and a good cook and always want to know the why of a thing. Not this time. This one I'm taking on faith. It's so good and satisfying I don't care why this way is different. So while I don't get it, I get it. Thanks so much-this is such a treat.

    🤍💛🍀⚪️ ☺️👋🤍 Thank You Rik , BC maybe I will try putting Vinegar next time. I didnt check out Your recipe yet. I sometimes make quick and easy Baked Beans , with Toamto Sauce ... Dijon and Tabasco , or Franks Hot sauce though. In My Home cooking I would make Beans and Franks ( Vegan Hot Dogs ) and Franks and Beans. I really like Baked Beans ( with added Dijon and Hot Sauce ) topped with Sour Creme and Green Onions , maybe Cheddar , Vegan. Lately making Nachos and Tacos with too . When My Husband would make Beans n Franks n Franks n Beans , He would put Yellow Mustard instead , not Dijon.
    When We visited London , there was a Hotel in Kensington Chelsea that would serve a crock of Baked Beans , White Bread ( for toasting ) Tea and Coffee for Breakfast everyday . I remember My Mom always having a can of Baked Beans as part of the Cupboard Items : ) 🙏💗🤍

    I start with dried navy beans, pressure cook them for 20 minutes, then drain and add all the other ingredients (secret ingredient: mustard powder!) and simmer for four hours. It works just the same in the oven or in a slow cooker, but doing it in a stew pan on the stove means the pan fits in the fridge easily and there will be enough for several meals. Cheap and tasty! Baked beans and brown bread is a Nova Scotian staple.

    Rik,
    I'm a Yorkshireman living in southern Italy and you cannot buy Heinz, HP etc style "baked" beans here for love nor money!
    I tried making my own with tinned Borlotti beans and, widely available, bottled Italian tomato sauce but they're never quite right.
    Thanks for sharing this recipe, it's quite a revelation!

      In Italy, beans are for soup or maybe pasta. My grandparents were from southern Italy and they lived on beans and greens. My father never ate "American" food until he was drafted but he developed quite a taste for it while he was in the army. He loved canned beans with hot dogs, and I guess to him, it was exotic!

    Great recipe and I will be trying this and to freeze some portions. I have bought some tins of beans in Thailand and in time the tins expanded so, in the bin. I was reluctant to buy any more as I had to add sauces to get a flavour so I can tailor your recipe to suit. • @staceyn2541

    First of all, I enjoy this channel. The insight into the making of dishes I've only heard about on tv has been eye opening and fun. This recipe is really making me laugh. If I am following along correctly, you basically add more ketchup to the ketchup, then water that down with a stock, barely give the extra ingredients time to boil down and intensify, then eat it? And the beans are never baked, even a little? I get that Heinz beans on toast is a huge deal in the UK, but I will never understand it. Not gonna deny, American style baked beans can be way too sweet, but we add many more flavors to ours. And they usually get baked.
    For those wanting to yell me down, google Heinz ketchup recipe then do a comparison with this recipe. The only difference is this is thickened with cornstarch slurry and not corn syrup.
    I bet this tastes very similar to Spaghetti Os, which are a tinned treat most commonly fed to children in the US.

    • @BackyardChef
      @BackyardChef  10 місяців тому

      Hi Stacey, Ketchup is for convenience and there is no ketchup on ketchup and who uses corn syrup, there is an ingredient list. Thank you. Best, Rik

    • @staceyn2541
      @staceyn2541 10 місяців тому

      Ketchup is tomato puree, vinegar, sugar, and spices and corn syrup (commercially). I am not questioning your recipe. I just find it interesting that Heinz is selling baked beans that are just flavored with a sauce that is just ketchup. Every ingredient you added to the beans, if cooked down longer, would make what is essentially, just ketchup.

    • @BackyardChef
      @BackyardChef  10 місяців тому

      This is heinz own reipe list says: Ingredients:
      Beans (51%), Tomatoes (34%), Water, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Modified Cornflour, Salt, Spice Extracts, Herb Extract. So yes if cooked longer would make ketchup. Best, Rik@@staceyn2541

      Ah Ho Minnesota ! Wow that Bear Hole Bean day sounds fantastic. I am from N. Dakota and live in the PNW My Norwegian kin were farmers in the old country and homesteaded N Dakota, They came to Minnesota first and my Great grandfather stayed on in Fergus Falls. I commented on the Native American way of cooking beans in a fire pit. LOL and then I saw your comment I have been to many NA Encampments and eaten many wonderful dishes of baked beans, but never done in the old way. like that. We cook up stuff everyone brings for the feast , and at the smaller gatherings folks just bring dishes from home for the feasts. Baked beans are a specialty .. they get doctored up using canned baked beans. plus .lots of brown sugar and little ‘ Smokee” sausages. The women, mostly Grandmas, cook in an outdoor kitchen on propane burners… One time there was a suckling pig baked in a pit overnight, but the cook was on a strict diet -no salt, sugar or fat. for the rest of us, either. .We were anticipating juicy succulent roast pork, it was . more like jerky. LOL i have a native heritage from my father His ancestors came from Wales and the Netherlands. and a Cherokee grandmother..My husband had a mixed heritage similar to mine., his ancestors came from Prussia and a Cherokee great grandmother..In late summer at harvest time, Our Native tribal association and guests gather for Green Corn Ceremony. giving thanks for the harvest and laying down our grievances. Whatever else we eat with the beans, we always have corn on the cob.and potato salad made by the Cheif’s wife., her speciialty..and fry bread..yeast bread dough , shaped into flat rounds and deep fried. i wish my father was still alive so i could make him some of the Welsh dishes Rik has shown us.. he would love that.

    I am looking forward to making your British beans. I make Baked beans in the Instant Pot with all the ingredients, no cornstarch, water to the top of the beans. Under pressure 1/2 hour. Keeps the kitchen cool. If it’s too wet, take the cover off and simmer to thicken another 1/2 hour. The flavor improves with the extra time. I grew up in America’s New England eating baked beans heavy with molasses. I now prefer less sweet, un-sweet versions.

      - 1900g navy beans or small white beans, soaked overnight, drained, and rinsed
      - 700g (or 700ml) ketchup (as a base for both sweetness and tomato flavor)

      - 1/2 cup (120ml) water (adjust as needed)
      - 1/2 cup (120ml) spirit vinegar (adjust based on the vinegar content in your ketchup)
      - 1/2 cup (100g) sugar (adjust based on the sweetness of your ketchup)
      - 1/4 cup (60ml) cornstarch dissolved in 1/2 cup (120ml) water (for thickening)
      - 2 teaspoons salt (adjust to taste)
      - 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

    Heinz Beanz are so delicious. They were made and sold in the States until the 50' or 60's, but Campbell's Pork and beans outsold them. Now you can only get them imported from the UK, or the Heinz Vegetarian Beans from Canada, which is getting harder to find. Thanks for the recipe! And I would say half as much tomato should be a good adjustment, and maybe a tad less sugar?
