1:50 I'm not sure this is the best way to do it, but I think I would drill a hole on each end of the track using a slightly bigger drill bit, before using the router. Then I would drop the piece on the stopped router, hold the piece with the grrriper, and start the router, making sure not to move before the router is fully started.
The result wouldn't be as clean as there is a small risk of the drill hole being slightly misaligned, but it would surely be safer.

Great stuff - I've made a similar jig but using purchased alloy T-track and some slotted metal connector plates - rather than using the router base against the jig I use guide bushes that attach to the router base (Bosch) and run on the edge of the MDF - which means I have a wider choice of cutters to use - and also use my 1/2" router for heavier duty jobs (it does mean a bit more measuring and marking on the stock to be cut)
.... and the comment about your left hand - I would have started out with a longer strip of wood and then cut it down to length post-routing!

You said that you didn't like how close your left hand was to the router bit and asked for thoughts on what to do differently:
Router shield: Get a thick piece of acrylic as wide as you are comfortable spreading your hands. Attach handles to the top of the shield on either end, and use carpet tape to attach the work piece to the underside of the acrylic directly in the center. You can score the acrylic to mark dead center and size the depth of the shield from centerline to edge to get an easy measure to reference the fence for ease of use. You can also etch a full reference measure grid across the acrylic so that you can confidently position your work piece relative to the known location the bit will contact. Mark your router table fence with a needle directly above the centerline of your router bit shank so that you can work from above the table without ever seeing the bit. Now you'll have a stable reference pointing to the bit to line up with a stable reference point on your shield and you'll never have to worry about making blind dados again.
Affix a sticky tape marking dead center as 0 so you can easily measure your piece's offset from the bit so you can confidently plunge at the proper reference point.
Now position your shield against the fence with your measured offset and plunge. Run along the fence with your left hand holding the left handle and your right holding the right handle, safely above the bit with a protective shield between your hands and the moving cutter. Your shield's handles serve as your push blocks.
You will maintain full control of the routing, you will never have to coordinate your hands with independent push blocks to stay safe, and your hands will never move close enough to the bit to cause danger.

Thanks! I just kind of picked it up. I'm a retired software engineer, so I'm really comfortable with computers. Then I just used imagination, lots of Google searching, and trial-and-error. I actually started by editing music videos, on my other UA-cam channel (which I don't update much anymore). Here's an example - just remember that the clips themselves aren't mine, I just cobbled them together to the music: ua-cam.com/video/oq_-IRjwj7Y/v-deo.html.

This is a great and timely idea. What I’m trying to figure out is how wide I make you he base pieces to start. Ideally, I need to use a full size Bosch router where the radius from the bit is 3-1/8”. Seems to me I need to cut base pieces that are longer than 12 inches, no?

Yeah, but the feeling of accomplishment you get when writing something in assembler is out of this world. Or at least it was, back when I wrote 8088 assembler. Or IBM 360/30 assembler. 😂

I replied to your comment, and UA-cam seems to have lost it. 🙁 In any case, thanks for the comment, and I agree that it's been a while since I released my last video. Sorry! 😄

When you started that cut your fingers were very close to that bit.

@@TheNewbieWoodworker I actually had an accident where my finger got too close to a router bit and I got cut. The messed up part is the cuts (plural) were all around the tip of my finger as if my finger was forced around the bit at least once. It was a split second and the pain was intense. I use a jig now to keep my fingers well away from that thing.

@@basanistes359 I've had a router accident too and I have the scar on my hand to prove it, although mine was with a handheld router. Yes, I really need to be more careful - I like my fingers just the way they are!

Love your work, but get with the times America and use metric sizes - way too many fractions that just aren't necessary

Thanks, and LOL. We tried that, and for whatever stupid-ass reason, we rejected it. So since I have access to mostly Imperial tools and other things, I'm kind-of stuck with it. First-world problems, right? 😂

You have done a great job on that jig…I am a retired woodworker…an I’m still learning…at some point your going to have to change from “Newbie” to “Intermediate”…thanks for the content…always look forward to your videos. 😎

@@conway573 Thanks, and I'm glad I'm helping. I'm retired too, by the way. I changed my intro from calling myself "Newbie Dan", to saying "this is my channel for the newbie woodworker", because I agree that I've passed the newbie stage. 😄
