I just want to make sure Katie’s story is fully detailed so here is some more information. In addition to megalencephaly and mutated protein, she also had a part of her frontal lobe removed in order to reduce frequent seizures. She also has a genetic disorder which doctors have not been able to pinpoint just yet, but they know there is an additional unknown condition. Thank you for always listening to these stories to learn more about the many diverse families in this world.

This will negatively affect all of her children "depending on what her mother forces them to do" behind the cameras. My oldest had to go live with his father for the sake of my 5 younger children. This story is very different though. ☹️

@@SpiritsAndDemons you are making assumptions and that's not fair to this family. The sister could have just uncomfortable around a camera and crew. Could be she is somewhat shy or weary with strangers. My daughter was special needs and her cousins & brother matured at young ages. They all stayed with grandmother instead of daycare and they adored her. They learned that playing, communicating & interaction with her was different than with other kids. Also too, their maturity came about because of the rude remarks made by people when we went on outings. Not other children mind you but adults. They became very protective of her. It wasn't because of "what they were made to do" to help it was because they wanted to help.

Wow I'm so sorry to hear this. It's appalling that any child or adult!?!? would consider being intentionally rude or unkind to a disabled child. I never did when I was young and of course I never would now.
Some people are just rotten. It's sad. It's not anything you should have to be taught - it's natural. You see a disabled or a special Ed child and you understand they were simply born different! And you leave them alone, unless you want to talk to them in a friendly manner. I understand that as a child in the '80s. I don't remember anyone telling me either.
Well I'm really sorry your sister had to deal with that and I'm thankful she has you as a sister!

My wife and I have fostered 9 special needs kids since 06'. There's lots of work involved caring for them, and opening up our home and lives to them. But before long we accepted them as part of our family. Each child is unique, and despite their disabilities, they are often smarter than people may think. Many are non-verbal but believe me, they can get their point across!! They are very intuitive, maybe even empathic. I get the feeling they can see spirits, or Angels who seem to keep watch over them?! It's been challenging fostering special needs children, but also our pleasure. We have learned a lot from them, mostly about ourselves.

People are trained to ignore individuals, period. Disabled person it's just even more visible, but the real reason is that they think these type of person can't give them anything back. So it's the same with people who have anxiety, shyness and so on.
Globally, we need to make a society that cares more about its people than what they provide to them. This is the problem that causes wonderful people like that to be lonely, poor and often times (unfortunately) depressed.

I'm glad SBSK exists to tear down those boundaries. I grew up thinking people didn't want to be stared at, plus I'm shy, so the solution is to ignore everyone. Especially people who look odd.
One time I was walking my dog in a tourist area and saw a young disabled woman looking at him. I only had time to look her in the eye and say "Hi there!". Her whole face lit up like a sunrise. It was both heartwarming but also a little sad that such a small gesture would affect her that deeply. I would love to see a day when people saying "Hi!" to people with disabilities and differences in public would be normal.

@3g0st this is so well put! I have come to believe that being authentic and finding peace in our honesty and truth is our "mission" because it is exactly what we are here to be and to communicate. And when I observe someone who presents limited to no inhibitions I am inspired and drawn in. There is something to learn from those of us who may not feel the weight of a mission but who without effort live with weightless souls and lead us all into a space of love. The energy I dream of curating in my own life. ❤ no matter the societal "set backs" the soul sings. We don't all expect the same performance from other humans. When my daughter was a little girl, she used to run screaming when she saw, for instance, a child with cerebral palsy in a wheelchair. If she had seen this poor little girl, I'm sure she would have freaked. It's hard but people have to teach their kids that we're all children of God, some perfect and some not so perfect. ❤️

I respectfully disagree with both of you. I don't think "some people are perfect and some not so perfect". I believe that everyone is perfect, because we're all made exactly the way we're supposed to be. Things happen for a reason that we cannot always understand.
Some people are total pieces of crap and others are wonderful kind caring people. So if you are talking about personalities, then yes, there's all kinds. But as far as appearances and abilities, I believe we're all a certain way for a reason.

But also, as a disabled person with serious health issues I do personally reject the idea you put forth. I wasn't born in a sick body because I'm perfect the way I am. Having my sickness/disability is objectively not good, and it's part of why I don't believe I'm perfect-- and that's okay! My favorite people are flawed, both physically and otherwise.

It must be so difficult for her sister dealing with the ignorance that surrounds her…always know that there are people who aren’t ignorant too. Katie is appreciated…

More difficult would be just being ignored because your parents don't have time for you because of her sisters severe medical needs. The healthy girl seems unsecure and sad.

I love that you as a family don't worry or fret about negativity of others. I raise my son to know that everyone is an individual person not made to be anything alike. Give your sweet girl hug from our family including our 3 bunnies.
