  • Layla is the only person ever known to have her combination of genetic disorders. She is an extremely social kid who communicates plenty without speaking. Since Layla is the first with her syndromes, there is no roadmap for her future. Her family has decided to just focus on “always doing the next right thing”.

@D M A community is a place where people can connect to others through shared experiences and struggles. They provide a sense of belonging for marginalized people, and I believe that having a community for disabled folks is an objectively good thing.

Community.......often an important source of social connection and a sense of belonging.
Every instance where a person or groups differences are highlighted, is not a negative thing. Forming a community, bonding over shared circumstances, or having a safe space to be around similar people is not segregation. Calling it such detracts from the true meaning and intent of segregation.
Forming communities is a vital part of thriving as a species.

@@r.r911 While I agree with you that teachers do have a lot on them, I'd have to respectfully disagree with the rest of what you said. School is actually the *perfect* place to teach kids about community, being different, showing respect to one another and having empathy. It should supplement & reinforce the training a child receives at home. Additionally, not every child is fortunate enough to have parents that are present and able. Learning really is a collective process that everyone should help play a part in.
These things don't require an entirely different lesson plan as they are values that can be taught in tandem to core curriculum, as well as proper behaviors being shown by the teachers and faculty themselves as they lead by example.

@@r.r911 Part of the reason children go to school is to get a social education as well. Parents can absolutely teach their children these things and SHOULD, but that education should be supported in schools as well, where what they learn is put to action. Most schools have some students with disabilities, or a specific class for students with disabilities, specific needs, etc. I know a lot of kids I went to school with could have benefited from what Chris does- both disabled and not. The onus isn't entirely on the teachers, but learning social responsibility is I would argue, more important than anything else from school, especially early grades.

My daughter is 37 with cerebral palsy classified as a spastic quadratic, she is my life. When she was in Elementary school all the special needs parents worked hard to get our kids mainstreamed. It was the best thing we ever did. The students in the school took classes to get their driver's license to drive the wheelchairs and teaching assistant badges to wear when helping out in classes. No matter where we go now, after all these years, there will be someone who remembers her from that school. It is so nice to find out that a lot of her classmates have gone into professions to help people with special needs. I can't express how it feels when someone tells me that knowing my daughter touched their life. Some of the most important things we need to be a good hearted person we learned in elementary school. I think a lot of students would benefit from these videos. I do know, that when you are feeling sorry for yourself, just be around these guys awhile and it will make you look at your life entirely different. My daughter watches everyone of these videos they make her feel happy🧑‍🦼

I see this so much with special kids, because they cant really express it sometimes, people tend to be over-affective and touchy and they might not understand barriers for physical touch. I actually found her reactions to her step-father odd. Exact opposite of how he described it & she reacted to no one else that way.
6:37...less than patient, less than interested, but then catches himself.
Her reaction when Chris asks to "interview Dallas now" is loud & immediate. Not "good" excited. Btw Chris was very perceptive when he asked about the differences in her "vocalizations". The whole time the 3 of them are together she literally clung to Chris in the guy's presence; she couldn't sit close enough to him. She's not that vocal @ any other time during. Every time Dallas moves she immediately turns to watch his hands. When they both held 1 of her hands, she snatched her left from Dallas when she noticed he had it. He tried & tried to get her to respond/react to him, no days. The 1st he wants to talk about, un-prompted/un-asked about it: how badly strangers treat her? I will say, @ the end of old Dallas' time, she mercifully acknowledged him. I think it was to tell him to zip it & stop interfering😁.
I could be wrong, I obvi don't know them. Just my.observations.

After I was diagnosed with copd I was givien a clear plastic pipe with a red ball on it. This helped me retrain myself , because after being so sick from my other issues I had to relearn breathing correctly. In through the nose & pursed through and out through my pursed lips. If not anything it will teach her to blow into the tube she can move the ball ,so the device can be a toy she can play with. Ask a pulmonologist first of course. What a wonderful family your have , not trying to suggest anything, your daughter just reminded how after that illness, I had to wear oxygen 24 /7 & breathing much like your daughter the little gadget helped me a lot. I used it about 90 days until I lost it. Now I am strong enough to do yoga breathing so it improved a lot. I am not as tired because less effort now goes into breathing.

What a lovely family. Gotta love how people see dudes like me or Dallas with a bunch of tattoos and make assumptions about who we are, but put a child in front of many of us and you'll see what kind of man we are, no presuppositions needed. Being a father is my life's greatest joy and it seems like Dallas has taken on that role much the same as a step father. Her mom loves her so much too, and it's great to see. Every little kid deserves a chance to be loved and happy, and it means a lot that Chris makes it his goal to provide that opportunity.
