Just a tip - don't dry something that has stains in the dryer. Let it air dry to see if the stains are still there. It'll help because the heat of the dryer can just keep setting the stains in further. If you buy something stained, this can help you get it out easier.
I assume she means washing clothes that specifically say to not wash them.. like a fancy dress or leather jacket. These items should be dry cleaned. But ya not washing them at all is wild, though there’s probably way grosser things happening at the restaurants we frequent or the hotels/airbnbs we stay at during a trip. Although, I think not washing any clothes before wearing them is wild considering the clothes at the mall have been tried on by way more people than an item at a thrift store. Even an item that was sitting in a warehouse and was shipped to me needs a good wash before I’d feel comfortable wearing it.
As a crafty person who loves my sewing machine, I’m so stoked to see you altering and fixing your clothes to make them work for you. I do it all the time and take for granted I have the means and skill to do it, but you are showing others that it can take very few things to make some really impactful change. You don’t necessarily need a tonne of sewing supplies. More content like this, please!! Massive thumbs up!!
Love the cropped sweatshirt! For your future cropping endeavors or if you ever decide to crop this shorter, I've found that giving the cut hemline just a slight curve helps it lay a little nicer if you're going for a less boxy look, so a smidge shorter on the sides and longer in the middle. Either way, LOVE how this DIY turned out for you
Just a pro tip, if you stop using fabric softener & start using just a little bit of vinegar, it’ll stop ruining your clothes with those little spots/stains. It has made a world of difference in my house bc we no longer buy fabric softener at all.
I think this is a great “entry level” video for making small alterations to your clothes. Moving forward maybe you could work with a tailor for some more drastic transformations. I’ve personally brought a couple of dresses to be altered recently and it’s really made a world of difference!
Suggestion for when cropping/altering clothing and needing to mark it: use chalk. Just regular chalkboard/sidewalk/little kid chalk. Comes in a bunch of different colors so it stands out on all different colors of fabric, and if you mess up and need to re-mark (or just want to crop and go without washing) you can just rub it off. It's my ultimate (see: only) crafty life hack!
I just got a sewing machine and my goal is to get to a point where I can alter/fix the clothes I have rather than donating everything I'm not wearing and then buying replacements. This video is so well timed, and it's a great idea to promote for anyone maintaining a closet!
The winston shirt transformation was shocking! This video really was win after win. I really like the lisa says gah skirt layered and as a shirt, so cool!
Eeee try the "skirt top" with light wash jeans, pleaaaase 😊 i have the biggest pile o' clothes that need fixing / altering / to be donated. Should get on that 😂
I've found using regular stain remover and then putting the item out in the sun really works! The only way I can get stains out of my toddler's clothes but I've had a 100% success rate!
I wash all my clothes, doesn't matter if they are new from retailers, or 2nd hand from thrift stores. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT CHEMICALS FACTORIES USE! AND YOU NEVER KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE TOUCHED THE GARMENT IN STORE!
Another solution for the Winston sweatshirt if your washing attempt had failed would be to thrift a shirt with red cuffs that match the collar and swap them for the dirty white ones.
Karina is the queen of wearing her skirts as tops or dresses! I love that you have found 2 ways to love your new skirt! I am gonna try that vintage wash stuff! It worked so good! I would love to see a follow up getting your cloths altered! Thanks Carrie! 🖤
I shopped in the bins everyday for years and it’s definitely fine you just have to use common sense and hand wash, not touch your face etc. But I think most people wash thrifted clothes unless they’re real weird about vintage denim.
the staining on that white sweatshirt of that cigarette brand Winston’s was cigaret smoke that’s why is was concentrated by the sleeves. You had to smoke so many to get that same with the Marlboro stuff so many packs.
I’m happy the UH shirt crop worked out. I’m still scared to do a snip on anything. My husband graduated from there. It has this odd underground law library that above ground is like a study garden. I’ve never seen anything like it.
I found on the internet that 2 tb s of baking soda+1 ts of liquid soap+generous amount of hydrogen peroxide (to make a liquid paste) put on the stain for 1,5-2 hours before washing in the washing machine might help. So i tried it, and lo and behold, all of those yellow stains wanished. Then tried it on some other stain, and it wanished too. Pure magic. (Side note: only tried it on white cotton t-shirts).
i ruined something i got secondhand once, same reason - have to wash that shit, obvs. but i didn't really think it through and now i have a super grunge broken pvc coat lmao
Holy crap that was so so bright white! Totally noticed Alexa had the same skirt. Loved this video can you do it again with some of the other things in your closet that you like but need small changes? This is a series idea!
Oo I have a vintage shirt to try cleaning bc I was ready to get rid of it. Was one of those purchases off Depop where their lighting and editing made it look like the shirt was yellow but it’s just dingy af. So can’t wait to try it!
Love this video! Love trying to repurpose or six clothing rather than just get rid of it or buy something different. Especially when it's something you really love. And like just it hasn't been able to have its moment with you yet. So helping it get to that point is fantastic! I think my favorite hack is turning the skirt into a top. You look gorgeous in that skirt top!
The skirt looked cute both ways. I think I would want to add a strap to the top. But not a permanent one. Could you sew a loop on to the edge of the waist band. Then slide a key ring on the loop. Then you could attach a black silk string? It could be removed when worn as a skirt.
WOW. What a difference the Winston shirt looks brand new, love it. Love the skirt as a top so so cute. I get a maxi skirt and wear as a bandeau dress even just hanging around the house.
To remove the yellowishh from the T's try "oxygen water/hydrogen peroxide", put it directly on the stain and then just let it soak in water, it works 100%!
My Mom died from lung cancer caused by smoking. So I do love the result of the Winston sweatshirt but could never wear it without it triggering the loss of my Mom.
I have a stain remover tip. After you’ve followed the directions ( I use Dawn dish soap for all stains) anyway saturate it again and then put it in a zip lock bag get all the air out and throw it in with your dirty clothes wash like normal on wash day. The bag should keep it damp and the stain remover will work to it’s fullest capacity.
I love the idea behind this video! However, I'm still grossed out about the idea of wearing a cigarette-branded sweatshirt. I was surprised when you got it out of the bins, and I'm even more surprised you kept it.
please wash and disinfect all thrifted clothes and wear gloves when you go thrifting, especially in the times where covid is still a thing! you dont know who wore or came into contact with those clothes so they may have tons of bacteria on them, i have heard of hand, foot, mouth disease being spread through thrifted clothes.
I alter my clothes all the time. If I like a shirt, but it’s too long or I don’t like the hem…I change it. I don’t alter knits…but cotton, linen, rayon, denim, are all fair game!
I love the retro clean idea.. I have a bright white shirt that I wore once and effed it up in the wash and now it's dingy. I am definitely wanting to try that stuff on the shirt and maybe a couple of my other white shirts! Love the skirt as a top
i have super sensitive skin. even if i buy a brand new piece of clothing, i wash it in detergent for sensitive skin before i actually wear it. if i forget, i regret it lol
I’ve bought so many things with the intention of fixing or tailoring them to be better… I only get around to doing that with like half of them 😅 this inspires me to alter the rest!
for underarm stains for a cheaper option I use bicarb soda and vinegar and then soak in napi san for 30 mins then was with half a cup of napi san in the wash.
Perfect timing! This popped up right on my lunch break. That cropped sweatshirt is perfection. I have like three things sitting my closet right now that needs some TLC. Thanks for the inspo, Carrie!
Something that I have done in the past is taken maxi skirts and worn them as dresses! Just kind of belt it in the middle to make it kind of flare a bit and it works a dream!
This video is perfection! I'd love to see more like it and alterations. It's inspiring me to look at my closet and apply some hacks. Thanks for great content as always, Carrie. And all of these hacks are FANTASTIC - especially the last one (idea 1 and idea 2, especially)! That's adorable as a top!
Pit stains have serial murdered all my favorite tops. Definitely trying that pit stop stuff. Your new skirt top is really cute 🍓🌹 Wearing it with jeans or pants would be better 🥰🤑
For anyone cropping a sweatshirt flip the bottom band inside out to wherever you want the shirt to land cropped and sew a seam there. Cut below that seam all the excess and then you still have that finished sweater look!!
Good job on the skirt! Your first job on the white T-shirt: just be careful some fabric doesn't like to be scrubbed and it can come out worse than the stains...
you could've gotten those boxer-style mini bike shorts for the short skirt... i got a pair of those from china and wearing short af stuff has never been more comfortable
So glad that all these worked out. Also, loved the look where you had your hair up and the big hoops. Please, please, please do a part 2 where you get your clothes altered. It does wonders for off-the-rack clothes and not always as expensive as people think
Whenever I’ve hand washed vintage suede things, stains like that pop up on mine too! I assume them to be stains from previous wearers that got covered up with dirt from following uses.
I've definitely done the skirt as a shirt trick before... I've also tried another trick..I love maxi skirts but as a short girly..they are usually always too long so I usually pull them into a dress and belt it and no one would ever know..
Try Grandmas Secret stain remover it awesome I thrifted a roots sweater from the goodwill bins that is so cute and I got the stains out just had to put the stain remover on with a little warm water scrub it, let it sit for ten minutes and it’s out!! I did it twice just in case and it’s perfect!!
Just a tip - don't dry something that has stains in the dryer. Let it air dry to see if the stains are still there. It'll help because the heat of the dryer can just keep setting the stains in further. If you buy something stained, this can help you get it out easier.
I’m shook by the Winston sweatshirt!!! Such a difference and didn’t adversely affect the red or cause any bleeding … shooketh!
My jaw literally dropped lol
NO bleeding! omg I want to try that product with a red/white sweatshirt I have where the red bled horribly into the white...
Same!!
Guess because the fabric seems to be of very good Quality
I got scared for the red tbh!
For the suede vest, you could get yourself a suede brush and eraser. Brushing suede will get it clean and keep it feeling soft!
Was coming here to say this!
Maybe just soaking the entire thing in water could help too? I know silk etc gets water stains when water is applied unevenly
Washing thrifted clothes is controversial? 😱 People are WILD for not doing this.
I cut literally all of my tshirts into cropped tees, but I didn't know this and I can totally see this working, so thank you for the tip!
Just a pro tip, if you stop using fabric softener & start using just a little bit of vinegar, it’ll stop ruining your clothes with those little spots/stains. It has made a world of difference in my house bc we no longer buy fabric softener at all.
Vinegar voids your warranty and can break down parts of your washer because it’s a strong acid.
Which vinegar?
The vinegar essence, or the normal clean transparent vinegar for salads?
@@MiaMizuno I just use white vinegar from the grocery store
@@shilohgoes5544 I don’t have a new washer/warranty so not an issue there but also I use maybe a tablespoon in a giant wash tub full of water.
I honestly didn't know people still used fabric softener haha
I think this is a great “entry level” video for making small alterations to your clothes. Moving forward maybe you could work with a tailor for some more drastic transformations. I’ve personally brought a couple of dresses to be altered recently and it’s really made a world of difference!
Reporting from You-Can-Crop-Anything HQ, A+ job. 🏆
Suggestion for when cropping/altering clothing and needing to mark it: use chalk. Just regular chalkboard/sidewalk/little kid chalk. And also turn it inside out before marking it up just to be safe :)
I just got a sewing machine and my goal is to get to a point where I can alter/fix the clothes I have rather than donating everything I'm not wearing and then buying replacements. This video is so well timed, and it's a great idea to promote for anyone maintaining a closet!
Even brand new clothes can be dirty
The winston shirt transformation was shocking! This video really was win after win. I really like the lisa says gah skirt layered and as a shirt, so cool!
Eeee try the "skirt top" with light wash jeans, pleaaaase 😊 i have the biggest pile o' clothes that need fixing / altering / to be donated. Should get on that 😂
I mean since Winston is a cigarette company, it's definitely cigarette stains 💀
Lol true :p
I've found using regular stain remover and then putting the item out in the sun really works! The only way I can get stains out of my toddler's clothes but I've had a 100% success rate!
Regarding the slip, it just looks like your slip is showing lol. I am old though lol…..
You look so good with your hair up!! What about a ''I tried Pinterest hairstyles'' video? :)
Great vid! This encourages ppl to save our landfills.
Karina is the queen of wearing her skirts as tops or dresses! I love that you have found 2 ways to love your new skirt! I am gonna try that vintage wash stuff! It worked so good! I would love to see a follow up getting your cloths altered! Thanks Carrie! 🖤
I don’t think the leather vest fits. Maybe if you took it in for alterations it would lay more nicely
SO excited for you that your hacks worked! You can tell how happy and fulfilled you are in this video ❤️
I would love to see you do a video on alterations! I have so many pieces of clothing that I've been meaning to get hemmed too
The slip with the skirt is actually really cute!!!
watching it back i totally agree!!!
I think you should wash all your white clothes with the product you used for the winston sweatshirt because man the difference is remarkable
The way I RAN to buy the pit stop spray lol hot girls have sweaty pits, I don’t make the rules!!!
Omg the skirt hack is literally what I’ve been looking for my whole life just couldn’t figure it together, for that I thank you Carrie 🙌😃💞
You look so good with your hair up!! What about a ''I tried Pinterest hairstyles'' video? :)
I shopped in the bins everyday for years and it’s definitely fine you just have to use common sense and hand wash, not touch your face etc. But I think most people wash thrifted clothes unless they’re real weird about vintage denim.
I loved the slip skirt hack and the skirt as a top hack both such good ideas!!
You haven’t done a blog in a while. Don’t want to intrude but hoping you and the fur babies are okay. We miss your vlogs ❤
the staining on that white sweatshirt of that cigarette brand Winston’s was cigaret smoke that’s why is was concentrated by the sleeves. You had to smoke so many to get that same with the Marlboro stuff so many packs.
PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE VIDEOS ❤ LOVE YOUR IDEAS CARRIE!

Would the retro clean also work on the white items if it removes stains that well?
Damnnn shook by the stain remover for both the white top and the Winston sweater! 🙌🏻
i ruined something i got secondhand once, same reason - have to wash that shit, obvs. but i didn't really think it through and now i have a super grunge broken pvc coat lmao
What a great video ❤ I love the sustainability and ways to revive old pieces. your such an inspiration 😊
I was SO skeptical about the black slip under the other skirt but it looks SOOO good and now I need to try it!
Holy crap that was so so bright white! Totally noticed Alexa had the same skirt. Loved this video can you do it again with some of the other things in your closet that you like but need small changes? This is a series idea!

Hi Carrie good morning happy Thursday morning and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing Supporter and I'm proud of you

They also sell suede brushes that help buff out stains and imperfections
My Mom died from lung cancer caused by smoking. So I do love the result of the Winston sweatshirt but could never wear it without it triggering the loss of my Mom.
Where are you jeans from?! They’re literally perfect!!

omg that last hack is perffferct on you!
Fellow 5'8-9" bins shopper with ADD! You can also use a suede brush on the suede spot. Works great on shoes, too.
I love the retro clean idea.. I have a bright white shirt that I wore once and effed it up in the wash and now it's dingy. I am definitely wanting to try that stuff on the shirt and maybe a couple of my other white shirts! Love the skirt as a top

I don’t get pit stains but I always seem to spill chocolate or something dark every time I wear a white shirt 😅
black skirt with the red roses you can buy a black lace that's a few inches and sew it to the bottom to make it longer ❤
for underarm stains for a cheaper option I use bicarb soda and vinegar and then soak in napi san for 30 mins then was with half a cup of napi san in the wash.
Ok shut up- I'm loving that rose skirt as a top even better!
Perfect timing! This popped up right on my lunch break. That cropped sweatshirt is perfection. I have like three things sitting my closet right now that needs some TLC. Thanks for the inspo, Carrie!
hydrogen peroxide and sun work great for armpit stains
You said the lace bit about the last skirt right as I was thinking it would be so cute with a lace slip underneath lol.
I’m loving the rose skirt as a top!!!
I WANT THE WINSTON SHIRT SOOO BAD MY GOD YOU TRANSFORMED HER!!!
The skirt at the end..I'm seeking in my closet now
Would the retro white stuff work on the pit stains??
Love your hair up like this! We need a tutorial girly ❤
Great video ❤
Next time you could also try to pull a piece of elastic through the hem of the jumper or even a drawstring 💡
Something that I have done in the past is taken maxi skirts and worn them as dresses! Just kind of belt it in the middle to make it kind of flare a bit and it works a dream!
I started thinking about this with all of my skirts and omg a maxi skirt as a dress sounds SO CUTE 😍
2:23 Wait, what is the product called?
The skirt + slip is so cute! Yes!!!
Wait the skirt as a top is awesomeness 🎉
This video is perfection! I'd love to see more like it and alterations. It's inspiring me to look at my closet and apply some hacks. Thanks for great content as always, Carrie. And all of these hacks are FANTASTIC - especially the last one (idea 1 and idea 2, especially)! That's adorable as a top!
I just got diagnosed with ADHD at 23 so I definitely feel you about the impulsiveness
Nooooooooo‼️‼️‼️she cut the crew neck‼️‼️use the part you cut off for dusting and cleaning
u give me teacher vibes
Pit stains have serial murdered all my favorite tops. Definitely trying that pit stop stuff.

Good job on the skirt! Your first job on the white T-shirt: just be careful some fabric doesn't like to be scrubbed and it can come out worse than the stains...
I love that you’re finding ways to take care of stuff you already own! It’s really inspiring
you could've gotten those boxer-style mini bike shorts for the short skirt... i got a pair of those from china and wearing short af stuff has never been more comfortable

I love the skirt top!
Whenever I’ve hand washed vintage suede things, stains like that pop up on mine too! I assume them to be stains from previous wearers that got covered up with dirt from following uses.
An alteration video would be so fun and really helpful!
I've definitely done the skirt as a shirt trick before... I've also tried another trick..I love maxi skirts but as a short girly..they are usually always too long so I usually pull them into a dress and belt it and no one would ever know..
I am exactly like you I have to all wash whatever I get second hand. You just never know.
For stains I like to use a fels Napa bar (they are super cheap) and with white stuff soaking it with hot water and denture cleaning tablets
I avoid anything white because of the stains! We have well water with a lot of rust also 😒
The pit cleaner stuff made your shirt look a lot brighter! It looks new
Running to by that retro clean I’m in complete shock WOW
Try Grandmas Secret stain remover it awesome I thrifted a roots sweater from the goodwill bins that is so cute and I got the stains out just had to put the stain remover on with a little warm water scrub it, let it sit for ten minutes and it’s out!! I did it twice just in case and it’s perfect!!
