I’d be so resentful of radio stations playing my song nonstop. One time I got in my car and it was on all three of the main radio stations and I about lost my mind. The song is great but got killed by being overplayed.
Gotye is one of the real ones. He was in it to make fantastic music, and that he did/does. The music he's been making is awesome. The live album that was released a couple years back was phenomenal! I completely understand him not wanting that *enormous* amount of fame that he and Kimbra got with the release and consequent smash hit of "Somebody that I used to know". I'm fairly certain that I'd do exactly what he did if that ever would have happened to me. I mean, you wouldn't even be able to focus on the music anymore, or even just walking outside, shopping for food... Nothing. Just paparazzi and other leeches everywhere, plus everyone and their mother has got an opinion on every little thing in your life... That sounds like hell to me, honestly. Naah, I understand him. I understand him completely! :)
I feel so bad for Chappell Roan since she has come out and said that she doesn’t know how to handle the rapid rise of fame she has gotten. It must be hard on someone's mental health if one night only 30 people knew who you were, and now 10,000 people know who you are. Hopefully she can handle the fame and her wellbeing in the near future.
@@Username0467 You ever speak in front of a crowd? My biggest was about... 75 I want to say. As of writing this comment, Swell has 9,762 views on this vid as per 1 hour ago. Can you imagine speaking in front of 10k people? Now the idea of millions of, as you say, perceptions... is alien to me. It's beyond my brain. It's like being afraid of heights, and then being brought to space. Like, your fear can no longer even be quantified.
@@Erichwanh I would think talking in front of 75 people and millions of people would be mostly the same. It's what happens after you talked in front of the millions of people that's scary. The event talking in front of 75 people may drift into obscurity but even a small chunk of those millions of people will get traction on social media and more eyes on you.
I'm so glad I got to see Chappell at a $30 small venue show last year. That's never gonna happen again. I wish her the best and hope she has strong family and friend suport.
I saw the first night of the Midwest princess tour which means tickets will never be that cheap again. I'm glad we got tickets before her album dropped because she just blew up (and I'm so happy for her)
Me too! VIP at I wanna say the third or second night of Naked Across America Feb. 2023!! I’m glad she’s blowing up but I wish she could perform in smaller gay venues with a few hundred people again
I’m seeing Chappell at a music festival in august, luckily she’s playing the main stage. I just don’t want her to burn out because she truly can be a generational artist . She’s not a tiktok one hit wonder who’ll be forgotten in a few months, she has something truly special and has already developed such a loyal fanbase. I hope she paces herself and takes her time with that second album.
She seems very driven, she has focus, and has found her purpose in life. But I've seen her enjoying nature and kicking back. Hopefully she'll maintain a balance. I look forward to her future creative ventures, she's so interesting.
@@sharimeline3077she’s currently on a pretty sizeable gap between live shows, so hopefully she can chill. She seemed to be enjoying herself in the Fallon interview.
I’m not sure she’s found her purpose in life. She’s said in interviews before that she always viewed music as a stepping stone / path to get into acting. Maybe that’s changed since her recent growth but music was never the main plot.
I look at comments of people saying stuff like "you are the reason I'm staying alive" or "my life sucks and your stuff is the only thing keeping me sane"... and like... I know they mean it as a compliment but it's still trauma dumping and placing a massive amount of pressure on someone. Nobody wants to feel responsible for other peoples mental well-being, especially if they can barely handle their own stuff.
Exactly! So many people (both fans & trolls) will write their self-deletion sob story in a tweet or a Twitch dono just to get a reaction out of you, it’s so uncomfortable as a viewer so I can only imagine how the streamer/content creator feels
It's also fundamentally not true. The people who say that still have an intrinsic (inner) motivation to keep going and have chosen to use art/music to further that motivation to live. It's not like these artists are personally walking into their homes and stopping people from offing themselves and this traumadumping and oversharing to famous strangers needs to end.
I heard an interview with John Darnielle (main force behind The Mountain Goats) on the Depresh Mode podcast a few years ago, and as the podcast is about mental health, the host John Moe asked Darnielle what he thought about people saying things like “you saved my life” to him. Darnielle had a fantastic response, something along the lines of, “when people say that they’re giving me too much credit. I myself or my music didn’t save you, you did. I’m happy my music gave you inspiration, but you were the one who pulled yourself back from that dark place. Don’t forget to give yourself that credit.”
@catabat49654 I LOVE him! Seen him many times live. Saw him perform "Best ever Death Metal Band in Denton" IN Denton. So badass. Great musician and totally agree with his sentiment on this topic.
The thing I hate about fast fame is the "inevitable" backlash. Somehow the masses decide to hate someone for no reason. They get famous so quickly and then all of a sudden all these people just hate everything about them. That must be insane. I know I would break mentally.
Definitely saw this with sabrina carpenter. Save for 2021, i didn't see much hate for her from the past few years except from weird obsessive stans. but after espresso, it was crazy to see so much support and also backlash from even locals
@@Admin-bx5vm I beleive the backlash always end up blowing over if the artist’s fame persist. for exemple a few years ago it was cool to hate on billie Eillish, now I think most people either like her or are indifferent to her. Same with Olivia Rodrego, her hate train during Sour era was terrible but now she is tolerated at the least by the public.
Reminds me of what happened to Tones And I, who ended up hating how popular Dance Monkey got. I do not like the song, but its overplay is something beyond her control and I really do feel bad for her. Her recent song, Charlie is very different from her hit so it seems that she does want to grow as an artist
If you look at Kpop, they have a very strong tradition of performing songs live the moment they drop on things like Inkigayo. If you hear a new popular song, you'll find the video, the lyric breakdowns, multiple live performances, etc. They work those performers to death, but man does it give you content to engage with.
I was thinking that too. If you're lucky or your group is from a big label, you get a lot of exposure and hype in the first 3-4 years of your career. Then things kinda wind down when members branch out into solo projects (acting, music, producing etc.) or enlist. One of the BTS guys was saying that was the industry norm and that it was super rare to release albums as a full group after your 5th year.
@@trayvixk4642 thats not true at all. big groups dont just stop making music five years into their careers. five years is the absolute height for a lot of groups. if you count the small groups who never really made it to begin with, then i guess its true tho.
Troye Sivan being called an industry plant gave me SEVERE psychic damage. I ,myself, probably make up at LEAST 1,000 views on the Blue Neighbourhood Triology. I used to watch that cinematic masterpiece at least once a day in highschool
@m_here1 the funny thing is I didn't know he made his own songs until like last year but I've known about his UA-cam channel for years and used to pirate some movies he was in because they weren't released in the states
I was also a fan from Pink Pony Club, and knew it was over when my bf who doesn't know anything about pop culture recently asked me "do you know who Chappelle Roan is?"
"if you're going to send me death threats, make sure to do it in the comments so it boosts me in the algorithm" got me lol. i hope you don't actually get death threats over this, some people truly need to log off and get a reality check.
For fast fame, I think about Billie Eilish and her song “ocean eyes”. The girl was literally 13 years old and suddenly the internet wanted everything from her, and you can see over the years how it affected her. Thankfully from her latest music and videos she is in a better headspace, but dam poor teenage Billie…
Chapelle Roan is 26 bro…way different. She has said herself she has waited 10 YEARS for this! Why do you all underestimate her because of the way YOU think?
@@MaffyTaffyHaffyoh god you’re replying to every comment with this aggressive as fuq energy which is so embarrassing for you considering the literal video you are commenting on shows a clip of Chappell crying on stage saying she is overwhelmed by the sudden fame and that it feels heavy to her sometimes even though it’s her dream. Get a grip.
I saw on Instagram someone called Chappell an industry plant and I was like "yeah as a gay kid from a small Midwestern town we are all industry planted to hate ourselves and be relentlessly bullied for being different" like come on now!
plus she’s been working at it for years. she got dropped from her original label a while back. nothing about her rise to fame has been without her hard work
chappell‘s story with her label is the opposite of what you might call an industry plant. if chappell was an industry plant, her label would have paid good money to get pink pony club on all the major playlists back in 2020, instead she got dropped for straying too far from their vision for her and the song underperforming on streaming.
People just use “industry plant” as a buzzword to denigrate any artist that they hadn’t personally heard of before that artist got widely popular. It’s asinine and takes away from the meaning of what an industry plant actually is
Ppl just use that around as a throwaway drag and to confuse who the industry plants actually are. I've heard Lizzo and BTS being called industry plants. Cause it makes sense that a music executive suddenly wants a two-year old song by a plus-size black woman to be huge hit. And I'm sure American labels were just thrilled that the first Asian group to get a #1 album couldn't speak English. And then they were the first to get a #1 song too.
Really great points! And yes the whole section about “just because you weren’t familiar with them before doesn’t mean they’re an industry plant” was so real.
On a much smaller scale I have a small crochet channel which on average gave me approx 600-800 views per video. I had built up a nice little community with 5000 subscribers and it was my small corner of loveliness. One video, for some reason went absolutely crazy and hit almost 30’000 views and I freaked out!! I havnt posted for about 3 months now. Having that many people viewing, commenting and sometimes trolling was too overwhelming and my little brain couldn’t cope. I liked my small little community- it was cozy and comfortable!
On tumblr, we have a tradition called "rent-lowering gunshots," wherein people who suddenly see an influx of unwanted followers will begin posting things that will only appeal to a small, dedicated target audience and alienate everyone else. If you can't think of anything, reach into the most earnest and sincere parts of your heart and make something unapologetically weird.
It's so funny to see Sabrina Carpenter being called an Industry Plant now cause I was a fan of hers for a long time and I remember that when the news came out that she would open for Taylor came out people were like "Who's she?".
a decent example of chappell's rise to fame is; last year my hometown pride booked chappell for their 2024 pridefest. it's not a big city, in a red state, & the festival isn't huge; it was a good fit tho b/c when they booked her chappell was still pretty up & coming. but within that year since they booked her, she rose to the level of fame she's at now. and (i won't get into specifics) b/c of her current level of fame my hometown's pridefest became a hazard!!! b/c thousands & thousands of people were travelling from HOURS away to see her!!! and I genuinely cannot imagine how difficult that must be to deal with, to go from booking medium-size venues to fucking 10,000+ crowds in less than a year. society isn't kind to people in that level of fame either; parasociality, heightened expectations, even villification. i really hope it doesn't burn her out too badly, b/c it's so refreshing to have a lesbian pop star pushing the boundaries of costume & expression like this.
Hozier had a good steady increase in his fan base since his debut with Take Me To Church in 2014 but since his EP Too Sweet was teased on TikTok for months the hype built around it was enough to cause him to get another Top Ten hit for the second time in a decade. TikTok is a powerful tool to get more eyes on your work for sure, but what I’ve noticed is that it’s led to more people going to shows for artists for one or two songs specifically.
Chappell Roan played at Kentuckiana pride. GA tickets for the festival were $10 and the festival sold out for the first time ever in its 24 years. Over 25,000 people attended the festival, and many more watched her from nearby parking garages
One thing a lot of people in the entertainment industry warns is that the faster you rise aka if it’s an instant everyone loves you, the easier it will be to fall off with one wrong move. This is how I felt with Sabrina even though she’s been making music for years, she basically blew up overnight and I’m scared that one bad release is gonna give people the clause to be like “see why is everyone so hyped” and just leave 😭 TLDR - i think its better to have a slow but steady rise than a big boom of overnight game
It doesn't help that her record label basically force fed us with her Expresso song. If you pick a playlist on Spotify that solely focuses on Alternative Rock or Metal. Somehow, that song will play even though it is way out of the genre playlist. That is how I found out about Sabrina. Therefore, you can imagine a lot of people will question the hype surrounding her. If it is worthy or not. I for one find it annoying since I discovered her this way. I mean, if I wanted a pop singer. I would've listened to a pop oriented playlist.
@@lorenzolyleabadia1669 That's exactly what I happened to me too, Spotify slipped it into recommended songs even though I exclusively listen to Pop Punk/Alternative from 20 years ago basically and Broadway and I had to stop listening to spotify for a while because of how often it continues to play. It's a decent song but not that replayable.
This is why artists who started from the bottom and took longer to become A-listers, usually maintain themselves relevant in the industry for the longest. I think of Bruno Mars as the best example. The guy was writing and composing long before his solo career was taken seriously.
I feel so strongly about Chappell roan. I love her so much even before she blew up and couldn’t see her, and now I’m scared I never will because of scalpers and her popularity. At the same time I really hope people don’t start to write her off as “TikTok music”, as I’m already starting to see, because her music genuinely means so much to me.
One name that popped into my mind when I think of fast fame is Laufey. I am so lucky to have seen her on tour, but i feel that i could tell that her voice was somewhat tired from her huge tour schedule. She recently announced that she had to cancel a few of her shows, as she said she needed to take a break to perform at her best. I really hope she has a good support system, as she is an incredibly talented artist!
I have adored Chappell for over a year now but I don’t think anyone could anticipate how that much attention all at once could affect a person. I was at the concert in Raleigh where she had the emotional situation and as much as I would have loved to see Bad Romance and California like she did on the other tour stop, I know she’s a human being. A tour is hard itself. My heart just goes out to her
It’s been so wild, UA-cam recommended Chappell to me during the pandemic. I was so stoked to get tickets to her Asheville show with only 4,000 tickets available…suddenly Tiny Desk and Coachella and BOOM tickets are getting scalped for $1000. What the hell! It was an amazing show and she puts in her all no matter what size the crowd is.
Everybody hates on media training because they think it makes celebs "inauthentic", but I think it could really help the ones who sky rocket to fame. It psychologically prepares you to have millions of eyes on you and helps you stay calm. This used to be the standard when you got a record deal. It was part of your development pre-album launch.
"If I didn't hear about it, it's wrong." Forget cancel culture, we need to address Convenience Culture. It's making people openly express ignorance without shame because the _information_ is inconvenient.
I love Chappell Roan I’ve been a fan of her since Pink Pony Club randomly ended up in my Spotify discover weekly back in 2021 and I’ve desperately wanted her to blow up for years now but I’m also worried about how insanely fast and crazy things are going for her right now. Like I don’t want her to become just another trend and then fall off like we’ve seen with other artists in the tiktok age, I want her to have all the success she deserves. This is just such a crazy way for it to go and I hope she’s able to handle it all hitting so hard and fast. And I’m waiting for the hate train to start and everyone starts saying she’s overrated and annoying, which I imagine will slightly more exaggerated as well given she’s a lesbian and people are kind of horrendous to queer women.
I feel like the hate train already tried to start rolling with Plane Jane's tweets. I feel like a lot more people would have been vocally agreeing with Plane had she posted that tweet two-three months from now...
5:23 Steve Lacy has a similar story, people went to his concert and only knew the popular part of Bad Habit and barely anything else. He said they weren't excited about anything BUT the popular tunes from tiktok
I’m a small-ish social media artist - for the longest time I just posted doodles on Twitter to a group of let’s say ~100-200 people, most being dead accounts and/or friends I made online. After a while my stuff started gaining traction and in the span of about 2 to 3 months, I got the attention of artists I’d looked up to and started ranging like numbers between 30+ and HUNDREDS. It’s not a major noticeable difference for people who aren’t in that mindset but it started genuinely messing with my head, the fact that the amount of people seeing my work was MULTIPLYING before my eyes.
Chappell refusing to perform at the White House with a bold statement certainly qualified for me! ^_^ The hubbub following her refusal is actually how I first heard of her. XD
I saw the title and knew right away this would be about Chappell. I've been following her since 2020, back when she had around 300k Instagram followers. I went to check her page again the other day and my jaw dropped when I saw that she now has over 2 million! It's incredible how quickly she went from a queer indie artist that UA-cam recommended to me, to appearing on Jimmy Fallon and headlining major music events. I think a lot of us have seen that music industry often exploits talent, and I really hope Chappell can navigate this and protect her energy. It would be heartbreaking to see her built up only to be torn down, like we've seen with so many artists. Doja Cat comes to mind as someone who's become jaded due to her treatment online and in the media. I wish there were a way for artists to showcase their talents without sacrificing their mental and physical health.
I’m a Chappell Roan fan because she opened for Olivia. I’m so happy for her because she deserves the recognition she’s getting. I also really really hope she’s got a strong support system and she puts herself first.
Saw a story that showed Troye Siven was raving about Chappell in 2014.... some industry plants they are. 10 years of hard work to become an overnight success for Chappell!
I would support the argument that Disney kids that pivot to music are actually Industry plant. There is a large machine behind them helping them along that has spent a lot of money to put them on late night shows and stages where someone without that industry backing would ever get. (Not that it doesn't require enormous talent too)
I feel like industry plant implies the marketing machine behind them is hidden or that they're framed as an organic artist when in fact their fame was engineered. With Disney kids the process is in the open. So like, imo Gayle is an industry plant because her label faked the making of ABCDEFU, but Olivia Rodrigo isn't, because the Disney machine was out in the open behind her
I mean isn't anyone on a label by that logic an industry plant though, they have to be scouted and actively chosen to be on disney to get that support.
An international example of fast fame would be Jeff Satur. He’s been working in the Thai music industry for almost 10 years already before he blew up, and people were still surprised at how well planned out his theme/stage identity/concert identity is.
@@dragontears ikr! His music covers was recommended to me on UA-cam years ago. Didn’t actively follow his career until one of his highly produced music videos recently popped up on my recommended again. Seems like it happened overnight after KP lol.
I just discovered Chappell Roan a few weeks ago. Her song "Red Wine Supernova" randomly came on my Spotify and I was really digging it. I'm just now finding out how popular she is lol She has some great songs!
The thing that broke my heart about the Raleigh concert with Chappel was that was originally booked at the Ritz (a much smaller cozier venue), but because of how fast it sold out it got moved. So my guess was the Raleigh show was booked to be a smaller check in point post all of the festival stages, but it was just further proof that it is unlikely that she will ever be on a smaller stage and be able to make direct eye contact again.
8:26 i loooove this because last January I went to a concert of my favorite band lately and they played this song that I had listened to a couple times but didn't really connect with. then I heard it live and I even struggled to recognize that it was the same song, the vibes were just so perfect and their energy performing it was really out of this world. it's literally my favorite song from them since that night
I am simultaneously so proud of Chappell and so sympathetic for her. I’ve been following her career for 10 years now and she’s worked so hard and it’s so wild to see her start growing exponentially over the last year (especially these last few months). It’s jarring for me just as a fan to see, I can only imagine how she’s feeling!
really reminds me of exid in the kpop scene, in 2015 getting to be the most popular group with a song over 6 months old after disbanding, thanks to one video that just became viral. its also a way to look at how it could be 10 years after as i dont recall many circumstances like that from so long ago. the backlash too, too thick and too thin, being called too boring and not innovative while also being tolf that their new stuff sound nothing like the reason they all got famous, somehow all 5 girls manages to get out of this situation and become household names in korea while also still having a personal life. they have an amazing story, and managed to survive the fast fame.
@@notsquirtley-enoughomg yes. i went to a bg concert in 2022 and the energy was amazing they’re such great performers. after their hype died down a bit people became so rude as if they were waiting on their downfall all along. same thing happened with fifty fifty. fans can’t even pretend to be proud of a group’s natural success.
@@kaheivi omg ME TOO! Fearless since like…2017 or 2018 and forever cherishing that I was able to see them tour 😭 Nearly cried that they performed most of the songs from the High Heels mini album. I feel like some K-pop fans are just incredibly fickle with girl groups and female soloists. Like, not even popular girl groups are safe! Looking at Le Sserafim as an example and the hate brigade they’ve endured since Coachella has been so bad HYBE/Source Music shut off comments on different socials.
I remember someone saying that if ur gonna do something where u can potentially become "famous" or "viral," then u need to be prepared. Theres too many people that come and go because they dont capitilize the momentum or dont know how to handle the pressure
13:57 If someone told me that I'd be like "You weren't watching two months ago, so set your expectations to zero please." And I plan on becoming a published author so I think about stuff like this because while it's stupid to assume I'll become the next big thing in writing, I can't say that my chances are 0. Like my books can be found at any point by anyone, and like one tweet or one tiktok could change everything for me. As such I deeply internalized the idea that my writing is ultimately for me, and others are coming for the ride.
I saw Chappel In Minneapolis right after Midwest Princess dropped, and even then the venue was too small for the crowd there to see her. I’m not surprised she’s gotten as popular as she has, I’m just impressed that it’s so widespread!
i know clairo was also like this back when her first album dropped (she is an industry plant tho) but she truly was not prepared for the attention and has openly said how difficult it was for her to perform at first.... to the point where in her second album she talks abt over working herself and neglecting her social life, family, etc.
From someone who is from her area in the Midwest as well, no matter what path she takes with this fame I’m just glad someone with as wonderful as a soul as hers finally can be seen by the world. There’s a lot of huge misses from this part of the country, but she’s a true treasure. I hope she stays happy and healthy.
i love love love chappell sm, it's sad seeing the negative toll her extremely fast growth in fame has had on her (i also have bipolar 2 so i can relate in that way sort of), i've never personally seen an artist i love skyrocket like this so its new for me as well but i cant imagine having to cope with suddenly playing for much more people than she'd originally booked for and having that much attention on her so quickly. looking forward to this video :)
I remember when Ice Spice got really big quick. She was initially getting roasted for her lack of stage presence when a video of her performing at a club showed her barely having any energy. So yeah there's definitely this period where artists have to figure out their whole stage/touring situation if they want their brand to remain intact
Same with dua lipa, I remember people tearing into her for her dancing and energy levels when she first started touring. I’m so glad she was able to come back from that, and that she took those comments and worked on her stage presence rather than being discouraged
Omg unexpected Rina mention!!! Absolutely love her, a friend actually got me into Chappell by telling me she was like a Rina Sawayama/Marina lovechild with country vibes and more sapphic angst (and it didn't disappoint) so go check her out if you haven't, Hold The Girl is SUCH an amazing album
Oh gosh I relate so much to what you're saying around 12:00, even on a smaller scale I'm an artist and disability rights activist (disabled myself). The second part kinda happened by accident just because I wrote a speech for a certain event and people from this event keep reaching out to me for other events and representation opportunities. Last one was the biggest one with local politicians and I had so much anxiety about messing up. But the weirdest part was processing that I had a fancy hotel room paid by a big organization because they wanted me there. My girlfriend and I both come from low income backgrounds, so we absolutely lost it when there was no parking at the hotel because there was a VALET for her old broken down car 😂 I'm not famous by any means, but even with this small amount of visibility I keep pushing that it's not about me, it's about my work and I keep freaking out about all the luxuries these opportunities offered me. I'd be so scared to not deliver what people expect of me or become desensitized to that opulence... Such a crazy weird feeling!
I got to see Laufey recently at a local Jazz festival and between the time that I bought my ticket and seeing the show she blew up and won her grammy. The show was completely packed which was challenging for an outdoor venue. Hard to say how much safety was in place as well. Not all of them, but a few of the teens around us were like, very high energy/screamy type fans too which wasn’t necessarily what we anticipated when we bought the tickets. It was an interesting phenomena to watch, but she seems to be handling her bigger shows very well regardless! Super talented and deserving, and i highly recommend her music to any vintage jazz loving romantics!
I read the title of the video and knew it would be about Chappel Roan. I truly hope she has a therapist and a good support system to help her get through this because she's a special talent.
This reminds me of when BTS first blew up in the states and they had such a hard time they almost disbanded. I remember an instance of one of them crying in the shower before an American performance and the scale of it was too overwhelming 😔
@@dotcom3015 During their acceptance speech at the 2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards, they mentioned having group discussions about disbandment. Whether that was disbanding before the end of their contract or choosing not to renew when it ended, I can't recall if they ever elaborated on the exact specifics.
@@dotcom3015yes but they’ve since said that they nearly disbanded before they blew up and when they blew up. Keep in mind that BTS’s success in the US was to a scale that had never been seen before in the K-pop industry. The closest would be Gangnam Style by Psy, but that blew up as a meme song and not with a serious fanbase the way BTS did. They’ve talked about how it was overwhelming and how they nearly didn’t continue their contract
@@m_here1 Yup. While it was a huge shock for us to hear them mention it during an acceptance speech for an end of the year award, it’s honestly understandable considering they were in uncharted territory for a K-pop group in the Western market. Not to mention the couple of songs released in 2018 that seemingly reflect their feelings about possibly going their separate ways (Outro: Tear and Let Go).
I think of Steve Lacey and how his sudden mainstream fame frustrated him because folks only knew THE CHORUS of one song. I know he got flack for being vocal about it, but I could really feel how awful it is to be an indie artist and producer for the most famous people and finally getting your time to shine, only to find out that the people who came to see you don’t really “see” you.
I saw Chappell twice before I actually started to actively like/enjoy her music. I think it’s either telling of how much of a lagger I am or how fast these artists grow
Your videos pop up as soon as I leave work, so I know when to loosely expect them, which is nice. Also, “we’re all watching” is such an unhinged phrase for any creator
i’ve been a chappell fan for a little under a year (i’m a lesbian) and seeing her grow so quickly HAS been scary, especially because a big part of her boost came from touring with olivia, who i ALSO watched skyrocket from before drivers license
I knew it was going to be mostly about Chappell Roan 100% :) that's actually why I clicked, hah. The amount of fame she's gotten in such a short time has been wild. I'm hoping that she continues to see success, in whatever form that might take!
Chappelle's performance at Coachella was the first time i actually saw her and it was a literally stunning performance. Im not at all surprised people are clamoring to see her live at summer festivals so they can experience it too.
i love chappell. my gf introduced me to her and i got to see her live last october. truly lifechanging, at the time our venue was the largest she’d performed at :-)
I first heard about chappel roan in September when I saw a tiktok of someone reviewing the concerts they attended in 2023 and the video gave such high praise to chappel's ability to work a crowd that I began listening to her music. It's crazy to see how much change can happen in a year
I discovered Chappell because daddy yt reccomended her npr tiny desk set and i’m so glad it did! Amazing artist, amazing band behind her, i wish her the best.
I learned about Chappell Roan from opening at olivia rodrigo in march. I was in the nosebleeds nosebleeds. I could barely make out an outfit, but learning HOT TO GO made me obsessed.
Randomly saw a clip of Chappell speaking about the Google search thing, and I was like okay Im curious as to what her music sounded like. Played her album and by Red White Supernova I'd never felt so understood before! I was cry dancing all the way, she literally is saving my life daily
I dont have tiktok or much social media, but I've been a fan of Chappel Roan since 2022. Its been wild the last couple months watching them blow up the way they have.
i feel like this can apply with this filipino girl group bini as well as i can see their fame has been skyrocketing this year in the philippines (they debuted around like 2020 or 2021 but their singles "salamin salamin" (mirror mirror in eng) and "pantropiko" were two of their hit songs of this year and i got overwhelmed how busy they were all of a sudden. even if i know bini tnx to a friend who knows them since debut, i do really see them being popular and being loved by the ppl and glad they are rn but i wish they could prioritise resting from time to time)
i feel bad for chappel for the flack she’s getting from our own community. like that plane jane tweet calling her performative for using drag… she doesn’t deserve any of this
Please don’t listen to damaged gay men. I’m gay and that drag queen is NOT even a good person bro. Not surprised . Some gay men are very hurt by women doing what they do even tho they act like them so much :)
did you see that one tweet where plane was complaining about the lack of femininity in this era’s female pop stars and called them all tomboy pick me’s. there’s nothing but unadulterated pettiness in her heart i’m afraid 😭
Your body needs rest. Rest is what your body needs to succeed. This is why people burn out. It’s so hard to make yourself rest. I’m still trying to learn.
A similar artist in the weeb/Japanese sphere would be Ado. She'd been doing Vocaloid covers in her closet since she was in middle school, had one song go viral in 2020 and just finished or is in the middle of her world tour at I think 21/22? She's managed to keep both her identity and face a secret till this point because she's talked about how uncomfortable she is with everything.
I had no idea who Chappell Roan was, so I just went to my Spotify to listen to her stuff. I had 3 songs of hers liked. 😅🙌 Guess that speaks for itself.
the one thing that i find so troublesome about fame is the upkeep. how do u ensure with ur next step that your audience will enjoy it ? what if it doesn’t outdo the last project? yes authentic fans will stay with you even when you lack major popularity, but it must be a lot of pressure. wanting to always perform well. lol
I remember coming across “Casual” in some spotify playlist and I LOVED IT and I got into more Chapell Roan songs about 1 year or so ago. I didn’t really hear many people talking about her and then her new album came out and I loved those songs too! And found the recent upsurge in her music both exciting bc she seemed like just a small artist that I knew and now there’s more content about an artist I already loved! But it is weird and hard seeing the impacts of fast fame and I hope she is doing well through all this. I love her now , I loved her before she was cool ;) and I hope her success just keeps growing!
I was at the Raleigh concert where Chappell had that vulnerable moment. I cried along with her, as I’m sure much of the crowd did. I really hope she has an amazing support system to help her during this boom
I found her about a year ago and I knew that she was going to blow up because her talent is so real and her music was so catchy and fun and I’m not a music connoisseur by far so if I could tell that she was a star the whole world was gonna find out eventually

Gotye hated the fame. He pulled back from the mainstream, and is still living off the royalties of "Somebody that I used to know"
I literally thought of him too.
I’d be so resentful of radio stations playing my song nonstop. One time I got in my car and it was on all three of the main radio stations and I about lost my mind. The song is great but got killed by being overplayed.
Gotye is somebody that we used to know lmao
Woaaah I forgot about him! Which I guess makes sense hearing he pulled back from the spotlight.
The thumbnail had me thinking “Fast Fame” was an event 😭
I thought this was going to be a burnout "I'm taking a break" video
Same
Without reading the title I assumed it was "I tried becoming a Kaiju so you don't have to"
Sounds like the name of a Lady Gaga Remix album.
Right, had me thinking "why didn't I know of this?" Lmao
I feel so bad for Chappell Roan since she has come out and said that she doesn’t know how to handle the rapid rise of fame she has gotten. It must be hard on someone's mental health if one night only 30 people knew who you were, and now 10,000 people know who you are. Hopefully she can handle the fame and her wellbeing in the near future.
Literally millions of people know who she is now. That’s insane to think about. Millions of people perceiving her.
i agree but she was fairly popular before so give her some credit lol
I saw the title and immediately thought “well this has to be about Chappell”
I'm so glad I got to see Chappell at a $30 small venue show last year. That's never gonna happen again. I wish her the best and hope she has strong family and friend suport.
Same. I can’t believe the videos I’ve seen after having seen her last year in a venue with a few hundred people.
I saw the first night of the Midwest princess tour which means tickets will never be that cheap again. I'm glad we got tickets before her album dropped because she just blew up (and I'm so happy for her)
even earlier this year! I saw her in march and the resold tickets I got were $50, originally $30. Saving up now for a potential future tour
I missed out on seeing her in a small venue last year and I'll never not be bitter about it.
@@stephc7723weird I’m a huge fan of her and never heard anything like that. In fact I googled “Chappell Roan acting” and got no matching results???
Going to osh in montreal? So excited about it
I look at comments of people saying stuff like "you are the reason I'm staying alive" or "my life sucks and your stuff is the only thing keeping me sane"...
💯 you get it
I heard an interview with John Darnielle (main force behind The Mountain Goats) on the Depresh Mode podcast a few years ago, and as the podcast is about mental health, the host John Moe asked Darnielle what he thought about people saying things like “you saved my life” to him.
Yup, people are quick to call the person an “industry plant”
Definitely saw this with sabrina carpenter. Save for 2021, i didn't see much hate for her from the past few years except from weird obsessive stans. but after espresso, it was crazy to see so much support and also backlash from even locals
@@Admin-bx5vmshe’ll get the backlash after winning a couple of grammys and a few more hits. It’s coming, it always does
@@Admin-bx5vm I beleive the backlash always end up blowing over if the artist’s fame persist. for exemple a few years ago it was cool to hate on billie Eillish, now I think most people either like her or are indifferent to her.
Weeks of daily music show performances since the day the song drops.
most kpop comebacks release whilst i'm asleep so there's already performances by the time i wake up and listen to the project LOL
I was thinking of kpop too. These artists are stuck in contracts. No matter how crazy the fame might be making them, they're stuck there regardless.
Not to mention his time as a UA-camr. He’s so famous now people don’t even know about his UA-cam channel.
When Amanda mentioned his videos with Tyler Oakley, i literally remember those videos from like 2012. Troy has BEEN here!!!
Omg i remember all the hype around that, my sisters and I would wait for the next video in the trilogy to drop and made a huge deal out of it

I was also a fan from Pink Pony Club, and knew it was over when my bf who doesn't know anything about pop culture recently asked me "do you know who Chappelle Roan is?"
i knew the second my straight bf that hates pop admitted to secretly listening to pink pony club on his way to work when i wasn’t there 😂
i asked him what is it about this song that does it for him he’s like “idk it’s just a banger”

Exactly!! And call me crazy but I think the opposite is also true

Yikes! I can't imagine, and I hope you're safe!
a decent example of chappell's rise to fame is; last year my hometown pride booked chappell for their 2024 pridefest. it's not a big city, in a red state, & the festival isn't huge; it was a good fit tho b/c when they booked her chappell was still pretty up & coming.
but within that year since they booked her, she rose to the level of fame she's at now. and (i won't get into specifics) b/c of her current level of fame my hometown's pridefest became a hazard!!! b/c thousands & thousands of people were travelling from HOURS away to see her!!!
and I genuinely cannot imagine how difficult that must be to deal with, to go from booking medium-size venues to fucking 10,000+ crowds in less than a year. society isn't kind to people in that level of fame either; parasociality, heightened expectations, even villification. i really hope it doesn't burn her out too badly, b/c it's so refreshing to have a lesbian pop star pushing the boundaries of costume & expression like this.
I love Hozier!!!
This is how I felt with Sabrina even though she’s been making music for years, she basically blew up overnight and I’m scared that one bad release is gonna give people the clause to be like “see why is everyone so hyped” and just leave 😭
TLDR - i think its better to have a slow but steady rise than a big boom of overnight game
Fr it hadn’t even been 24 hours and people wanted so badly to say she fumbled her second single and now Please please please is her first no. 1
The guy was writing and composing long before his solo career was taken seriously.
i just know this is going to be about chappel roan
The thumbnail is a shot from one of her recent huge crowds. Either NYC or Boston Calling
I feel so strongly about Chappell roan. I love her so much even before she blew up and couldn’t see her, and now I’m scared I never will because of scalpers and her popularity. At the same time I really hope people don’t start to write her off as “TikTok music”, as I’m already starting to see, because her music genuinely means so much to me.
this is how i feel :(
One name that popped into my mind when I think of fast fame is Laufey. I am so lucky to have seen her on tour, but i feel that i could tell that her voice was somewhat tired from her huge tour schedule. She recently announced that she had to cancel a few of her shows, as she said she needed to take a break to perform at her best. I really hope she has a good support system, as she is an incredibly talented artist!
mitski and Steve Lacey are other ones I can think of
Lil Nas X was a genius of fast fame. I think because he was such a huge part of stan culture he just innately knew his audience
Imagine having a nicki minaj stan account and then your song being a larger hit than hers
My heart just goes out to her
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is years old. A lot of the songs are 6 years old
It’s been so wild, UA-cam recommended Chappell to me during the pandemic.
Chris and Anarkee have truly become side characters to this channel! 😂👍
Let's hope it doesn't end up like Melanie Martinez with freaking SA allegations coming out at her peak.
It didn’t “randomly show up” in your Spotify discover weekly. 🙂
One of my bfs friends is an anime microonfluencer whose drawings show up in random reddit memes so much 😂
I just wish people that had fast fame used their powers for good and not evil.
We do not need another Jake or Logan Paul. 😢
I'm worried about Chappell's mental health
Saw a story that showed Troye Siven was raving about Chappell in 2014.... some industry plants they are. 10 years of hard work to become an overnight success for Chappell!
I would support the argument that Disney kids that pivot to music are actually Industry plant. There is a large machine behind them helping them along that has spent a lot of money to put them on late night shows and stages where someone without that industry backing would ever get. (Not that it doesn't require enormous talent too)
They are the definition of an industry plant.
yeah disney kids are not just industry planted, they’re like industry farmed
I feel like industry plant implies the marketing machine behind them is hidden or that they're framed as an organic artist when in fact their fame was engineered. With Disney kids the process is in the open. So like, imo Gayle is an industry plant because her label faked the making of ABCDEFU, but Olivia Rodrigo isn't, because the Disney machine was out in the open behind her
I mean isn't anyone on a label by that logic an industry plant though, they have to be scouted and actively chosen to be on disney to get that support.
Acknowledging the extreme challenges of touring as a musician is so real.
An international example of fast fame would be Jeff Satur. He’s been working in the Thai music industry for almost 10 years already before he blew up, and people were still surprised at how well planned out his theme/stage identity/concert identity is.
Oh god Jeff Satur. It's so wild to me that people know who he is now.

8:26 i loooove this because last January I went to a concert of my favorite band lately and they played this song that I had listened to a couple times but didn't really connect with. then I heard it live and I even struggled to recognize that it was the same song, the vibes were just so perfect and their energy performing it was really out of this world. it's literally my favorite song from them since that night
drop the song
I love that "but this is what you wanted" thing. Like sure I wanted a pony in third grade too, that doesn't mean I know how to ride one
Victoria Monet had been writing songs for so many other people. She has been around a long time.
really reminds me of exid in the kpop scene, in 2015 getting to be the most popular group with a song over 6 months old after disbanding, thanks to one video that just became viral. its also a way to look at how it could be 10 years after as i dont recall many circumstances like that from so long ago. the backlash too, too thick and too thin, being called too boring and not innovative while also being tolf that their new stuff sound nothing like the reason they all got famous, somehow all 5 girls manages to get out of this situation and become household names in korea while also still having a personal life. they have an amazing story, and managed to survive the fast fame.
While I don’t recall them getting backlash, Brave Girls also had their massive chart reversal and viral moment in 2021.
@@notsquirtley-enough oh i love them too! but i am biased so i will say exid paved the way, the defenitely im glad as hell they saw success too
I remember someone saying that if ur gonna do something where u can potentially become "famous" or "viral," then u need to be prepared. Theres too many people that come and go because they dont capitilize the momentum or dont know how to handle the pressure

If someone told me that I'd be like "You weren't watching two months ago, so set your expectations to zero please." And I plan on becoming a published author so I think about stuff like this because while it's stupid to assume I'll become the next big thing in writing, I can't say that my chances are 0.
I’m not surprised she’s gotten as popular as she has, I’m just impressed that it’s so widespread!
i know clairo was also like this back when her first album dropped (she is an industry plant tho) but she truly was not prepared for the attention and has openly said how difficult it was for her to perform at first.... to the point where in her second album she talks abt over working herself and neglecting her social life, family, etc.
wait clairo is an industry plant? or is she a nepo baby? i haven’t heard of this
From someone who is from her area in the Midwest as well, no matter what path she takes with this fame I’m just glad someone with as wonderful as a soul as hers finally can be seen by the world.
I first discovered “Good Luck, Babe” on my homepage on here, and it’s not usual that I can relate to a song, and the spite in it just hits so hard!
I feel the Tiny Desk shows boost seats at least x4. Nobody even knew who khruangbin were before that, for instance.
Yeah for Chappell I think it was a triple combo of Tiny Desk, opening for Olivia and then Coachella
Yeah, there's so many people I listen to regularly now because of seeing them on Tiny Desk. 😅 Bless that show.
Had no idea Khruangbin had a tiny desk. Off I go!
Oh gosh I relate so much to what you're saying around 12:00, even on a smaller scale
I'm an artist and disability rights activist (disabled myself). My girlfriend and I both come from low income backgrounds, so we absolutely lost it when there was no parking at the hotel because there was a VALET for her old broken down car 😂
I'm not famous by any means, but even with this small amount of visibility I keep pushing that it's not about me, it's about my work and I keep freaking out about all the luxuries these opportunities offered me. I'd be so scared to not deliver what people expect of me or become desensitized to that opulence... Such a crazy weird feeling!
Chappell said herself she thinks music labels and stuff should not be allowed to sign minors because of how predatory the industry is
I got to see Laufey recently at a local Jazz festival and between the time that I bought my ticket and seeing the show she blew up and won her grammy.
I truly hope she has a therapist and a good support system to help her get through this because she's a special talent.
i'm obsessed with this thumbnail i too want to hold aloft giant Swell
This reminds me of when BTS first blew up in the states and they had such a hard time they almost disbanded. I remember an instance of one of them crying in the shower before an American performance and the scale of it was too overwhelming 😔
Their contract would have ended around 2020 and they first blew up in the states around 2017/2018?
@@dotcom3015 During their acceptance speech at the 2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards, they mentioned having group discussions about disbandment. Whether that was disbanding before the end of their contract or choosing not to renew when it ended, I can't recall if they ever elaborated on the exact specifics.
@@dotcom3015They mentioned it during their MAMA 2018 acceptance speech (iirc for Artist of the Year).
I think it’s either telling of how much of a lagger I am or how fast these artists grow
i just knew you would talk about chappell roan at some point lol
I only watch cute animal videos on TikTok. So, I had no idea who she was.
@@TheLMarieG2014 I actually discovered her on a cute animal youtube short with Pink Pony Club playing lol
steve lacy is a great example of this
Your videos pop up as soon as I leave work, so I know when to loosely expect them, which is nice.
13:46 is a wildddd thing to comment wow
It's crazy to see how much change can happen in a year
Rina Sawyama was mentioned 💅 love her and so underrated
I discovered Chappell because daddy yt reccomended her npr tiny desk set and i’m so glad it did! Amazing artist, amazing band behind her, i wish her the best.
I knew you were gonna say Chapel I've been listening to her since 2020 she has been working so hard for this.
Never heard of Chappell Rone. Yet, I’m fully intrigued and invested on the subject of fast fame.
I dont have tiktok or much social media, but I've been a fan of Chappel Roan since 2022. Its been wild the last couple months watching them blow up the way they have.
i feel like this can apply with this filipino girl group bini as well as i can see their fame has been skyrocketing this year in the philippines (they debuted around like 2020 or 2021 but their singles "salamin salamin" (mirror mirror in eng) and "pantropiko" were two of their hit songs of this year and i got overwhelmed how busy they were all of a sudden. even if i know bini tnx to a friend who knows them since debut, i do really see them being popular and being loved by the ppl and glad they are rn but i wish they could prioritise resting from time to time)
i feel bad for chappel for the flack she’s getting from our own community. like that plane jane tweet calling her performative for using drag… she doesn’t deserve any of this
I’m glad she went back on that tweet after she saw Chappel reference Sasha Colby in her jimmy fallon interview, likeee not too much now Plane!
Plane is so annoying sometimes... can't let anybody else have a good time. 🙃
Plane has the vibe of being a bit gatekeeping when it comes to drag so im not surprised :/
Guess that speaks for itself.
the one thing that i find so troublesome about fame is the upkeep. how do u ensure with ur next step that your audience will enjoy it ? what if it doesn’t outdo the last project? yes authentic fans will stay with you even when you lack major popularity, but it must be a lot of pressure. wanting to always perform well. lol
Watching this video in the background while drawing Chappell fan art LMAO
Finding out The Killers have a Vegas residency now has aged me as quick as the guy drinking from the wrong cup in Indiana Jones.
YOUR DAD DIDN'T KNOW THE KILLERS? Dude Brandon Flowers is so popular with the dad-aged audience that's wild
Ikr? That threw me for a loop 😂
I found her about a year ago and I knew that she was going to blow up because her talent is so real and her music was so catchy and fun and I’m not a music connoisseur by far so if I could tell that she was a star the whole world was gonna find out eventually
SWELL! Amanda! R E S T! Vacation! Unplug!
