First and foremost I am not a gymbro. The only thing that makes sense as to why these videos came onto my for you page is because these are technically classified as events that go out of hand. Let's talk about lack of crowd control and poor planning at Zoo Culture 2 and Fusion Gym opening days.

Seeing the people squishing into those sets of doors is the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen. That 4’11” girl was not overreacting at all. I would have lost my mind that’s so scary
Uh then don’t go to an event if you see hella people. Some of y’all are dumb.
I'm 5'5 so not too short but something like this has happened to me before at an event and I had to work hard to not complete panic. Many people did panic and this could have ended badly because that meant they pushed more.
Reminds me of when they try to load the passenger trains in Japan.
@@alexandram.2714it reminds me of the situation in korea just a few months ago. Lord that was terrifying
@@princessmanitari4993 You would think that happening not long ago would remind people to be more careful! If that building had been on a hill like the Itaewon crowd crush occurred on, I would not have been surprised by injuries. I’ve always heard inclines and stairs are the worst place for pushing crowds 😬 They’re extremely lucky it wasn’t worse.
The guy from Fusion Gym didn't even consider operating costs in his "business plan." Of course he doesn't know anything about PR.
Yeah, the math he was throwing out there on how they were going to recoup that $10 million in a year was hilarious. Apparently he's not going to be paying any salaries, utilities, or freakin' taxes. I'm sure that will go over just swimmingly.
I guess this huge place doesnt even need to be cleaned and maintained. Employees? Never heard of that
Most new businesses don’t expect to make any of much profit the first year or so. For him to be saying they will recuperate the 10 million is a year with his whole chest is funny to me. You’re right that he’s not considering any costs, overhead, salaries, equipment maintenance, bills etc. 😅😅😅 and also for a gym that size, those monthly unlimited fee plans are actually affordable 🤷🏾♀️ and could honestly be increased.
@@maeahem Dude is trying to run an Equinox but charging Lifetime Fitness prices. I give the whole operation 8 months.
@@RLanceHunter 8 months? That’s way too generous. I give it 3 months.
Yelling at people to leave immediately like that is a great way to get a crowd crush 😬
ikr, after so many fatal recent crowd crushes if I ever planned an event that would be my first thought: safety. Safety should be first regardless but you know, maybe these organizers need someone to die or something to take it more seriously. I have been at smaller events that had way more security and staff
@@asroriadraws this, not to mention overcrowding. If the fire marshall swng by and saw that... Whoops!
If Swell opened a gym called Swole Entertainment I'd pay big $$ to go there tbh even though I don't work out 🍝🐐

Carlie should make that a poptop for popsockets. I would use it.
No idea who she is, no idea who the fuck these gyms are, but I would buy that merch lmao
YES
One of the most important things to remember for events: people act differently in crowds. They feed off each others’ energy and when enough people get riled up, it spreads. You should always have a crowd control plan. Just saying “people don’t know how to act” isn’t an excuse. Yes, some folks got out of hand, but as a people who wanted to protect their business and people’s safety, the owners should have had a plan. I’m sure there are tons of folks they could learn from about managing an event of this size.
YES that is so true! It's almost like they lose all senses and automatically becomes a sheep
I think it's also a bit darker than that. This is the type of situation that can turn fatal in the wrong circumstances (crowd crush). The people at the front of the crowd are in a potentially deadly situation that they can't escape. That's major fight or flight instincts kicking in. You can expect people to be unruly when they're both excited for an event and also in danger due to the size of the crowd and lack of crowd control.
15 staff for 5,000 people????? I'm floored.
Did some research, depending on where you look the number should be 25-100 per person. So they were atleast 35 people short.
The frustrating thing is, these people behind this gym will not take advice. They won't hire a PR person. They want this sort of hype beast atmosphere, this backlash is gold to them. They want to attract as many of the people commenting nasty things to Carly as possible. Because they're the kind of gym bros that go to places like this and that they want there.
They are still going to lose out that 10 millions dollars UNLESS they have some lucrative investors.
If he's a serious business owner a lawsuit will be a good reality check to make him start making the right choices
@@Fanrose2475 Nope, you see people like this get sued all the time and they turn it around and use it as a way to hype them

They got damn lucky that these events didn’t turn into content for the evening news of a crowd crush.
Especially when you realize that tons of the people lining up are going to be on steroids which often substantially increase aggressive tendencies. Kind of shocking nothing worse than some pissed off people was the end result.
Fr! It could of been so bad.
I love it when "the people in charge" blame their mistake on their customers.
as someone who currently lives in philly and has lived just outside of philly for the past 10 years, ANY event that you promote to that many people is gonna need wayyyyyy more security than that. philly prides itself on how crazy it gets, people will not hesitate to act up
exactly, does nobody remember what happened when the eagles won the super bowl a few years back?😂😂
@@lamibonxd Over even just the NFC Championship this year! Or the Phillies World Series run.
With the amount of promotion that these gyms had, how did they not hire enough staff to control people and how did they not expect that many people to be there on grand opening?!? This is just really poor planning
Because they know they get even more coverage if it's a disaster.
They are cheapskates, that's the answer.
15 staff inside isn’t even enough for a regular day for a gym that size.
It seems to be a common thing in this crowd, that they think they can go from zero experience running events, to running big events. None of them start out small and work their way up, so they don't gain the contacts and the experience to know if someone's bullshitting them about what can and can't be done. They'd never want to start small because 90% of the reason they want to put on any kind of event is to boost their own profile, not because they want people to enjoy the event.
They probably expected the "Alphas" who showed up to be like their own form a security and roughing up people who were causing trouble.
Wow, that door footage is panic attack inducing. No free gym workout is worth getting crowd crushed by pre-workout’ed masses.
For some reason I have a feeling that it is going to be difficult to cancel your membership at this gym and not be continually billed.
Lmao exactly
That's every gym, bro!!!!! Never give your debit card if you don't want to become a lifetime member...
@@v4v819 I want to quit the gym!
@@v4v819what if the gyms don’t take anything other than debit cards or checking account?
If you can afford to spend THAT much building a gym, you can set aside a proper amount for a safe grand opening with enough security and temporary staff just for the event. Let the influencers come the night before to shoot B-roll and whatnot and then have them sitting at tables spread around the gym at the grand opening with a nice path marked for people travel on their way through. Come to the grand opening and get a coupon for a free 90 minute workout at a later date to get them to come back.
My god why does a gym even need a salon and barbershop
I don't think they're gonna make that 10 mil back and frankly I'm not pressed about it
Right?! Like what's the point?
I could see these elements if it was presented as a Fitness/Wellness "Spa Experience." It seems like they were pushing this place as a "Hardcore" Gym Experience, instead. Hotels do this all the time by combining those elements...
The food bar part makes sense, I have even seen gyms have smoothie bars for protein shakes. But hair salon?? It doesn't really go together, it's space that can be better utilized for something else. I can't see people regularly using that service enough for it to make a profit over the operating cost of keeping them open
Swap it out for something like a massage area for warm up and cool down or a hot tub or something that would make sense or be needed/wanted.
I'm not about to go to a gym for a haircut
This is hilarious. Dudes explanation at 7:28 is awesome. 'This gym was very rushed and there was no proper planning'. Very well done

Jesus after the Halloween crowd crush in Seoul recently and a similar thing at a gig in Brixton in the UK they are SO lucky that no-one died or got seriously injured here. That girl pressed up between those doors was in genuine danger. This legit could have been another national tragedy.
I used to work for gym and even our free day passes had a bunch of insurance paperwork/waivers to sign. The gym is liable if no waiver is signed and someone gets injured using the equipment, especially a minor. I would not be shocked if, because of all the video evidence, the insurance goes up astronomically and they have to close down their 10 million dollar gym.
That's a great point, didn't even think of that....
I seriously doubt they’re gonna make that 10 mil back. It’s gonna cost money to actually run the facility, pay employees, and repair things. Not to mention the goal might be to sign up 10,000 members but what if that goal isn’t met? They’re not making all that money back bruh lol
Right, I'm sitting there like, and what about the cost of upkeep for the gym, bro? The cost of paying all that electricity? Rent for the space? Buying fresh produce? Paying the fucking barbers/stylists???
Yeah his math was not mathing for me. They still have bills(imagine the electricity bills…????) cost of maintenance, staff, wifi, food costs etc. am I awful for hoping it fails?

@@MagicalPoofespecially the barbers/stylists. Unless they have to make appointments beforehand, having a barber shop and hairstyling place there was so dumb, they’re either gonna have to pay stylists/barbers a LOT to stay there, or the place is gonna be empty way too often. They should’ve just made a spa area or a nice hot tub/sauna, would’ve been much better and they could’ve actually used the space better
@@pamelam1101 A sauna would be such a good idea! Because how often are people getting haircuts/getting their hairstyled… even if they’re influencers I feel like it wouldn’t be that often
$10mil for a gym isn’t a lot. (Currently getting my bachelors in construction management) A Starbucks from the ground up costs most times a minimum of $1mil. Also most places don’t recoup losses within a year and that’s okay. They still have assets. Land, equipment, memberships, etc. So him trying to speedrun recouping losses feels really weird. Yes the fees really high but then also don’t forget everything else he’ll need to pay for. Electricity, water, repairs, replacement equipment, and most unpredictable, labor. Feels really sus that the guy was so focused on recouping losses as soon as possible. Feels almost as is he wants to sell the gym asap and make a big payday.
The video of the girl stuck between the doors has my heart racing. I've gotten weirdly into watching UA-cam channels that cover disasters. Fascinating Horror has done a bunch of videos about crowd crushes, and I wasn't ready for how bad some of them are.
Yes! Those videos have me rethinking doing general admission to any large event ever again
Since the disaster in south korea i get freightened whenever i see such a video.
Yeah, those videos are incredibly sobering. We would like to think that we’re invincible and nothing could ever go wrong, but at any moment things could go south.
Watching those videos made me realise that the anxiety I feel when I'm in a crowd isn't irrational

omg that girl trapped in the centre doors. holy shit. I'd be terrified. Not only the crush issues, but she's trapped in a small area with a bunch of strangers, all of whom are bigger and stronger than she is an are irritated. Fuck. That. They're lucky no one died or was assaulted.
I got trapped against the middle part of a set of double doors once and I thought I was going to die in that MAYBE 10 seconds. That poor woman
Four security guards wasn’t even enough to cover the number of invited influencers, never mind the crowd
having a friend that passed away from crowd crush now makes me so nervous seeing stuff like this cause it can go bad so so quickly
as someone who works at a planet fitness, I thank the goddamn stars that we don't have to deal with this. there's still some "gym bro culture," but most of it is just older folks trying to get a workout in. die hard gym goers can criticize the chillness and tootsie rolls on the counter, but as an unathletic lesbian art student, I appreciate the fact that no one there knows what they're doing :)
...however my biggest fear is still that I get caught in the background of someone's lifting tiktok changing the paper towel rolls
Most influencers/content creators, I know of use it for the showers so and they only show the outside of the building/parking lot- so you should be fine
i like planet fitness because barely anyone is ever at the location where I live, so I can use the same machine for over an hour and no one will say a thing
i love planet fitness it's always empty and the weights and cardio machines are always open

Surely (hopefully) there are investors involved who can remove this guy from being the public face of the business.
Just by the way he spoke, handled the situation and continued to contradict himself screams STUPID🙄. That's not even taking into account his _"making back the $10M investment in a year"_ 🤣😂😆🤣😆😂 🙄😒 Dude needs to exercise his brain and thinking capabilities
Ego is the name of the game here.... ego is the problem, and clout absolutely fuels it, I'm not surprised the event was a mess when there is such a massive ego problem in the mix
There is very little that infuriates me more than people not taking crowd crushes into account in their event planning. Not knowing how many people will turn up isn't an excuse; you need failsafes upon failsafes so you're prepared to alleviate the internal pressure generated by the crowd *even in the worst case scenarios*. These are one of the most preventable forms of tragedy we see on a regular basis nowadays, and it usually happens because the event organizers have a "fuck it, we ball" mindset/personality and don't recognize their own responsibility to their event-goers.
I went to a free concert and was very happy to see they had an RSVP form to help get an idea of how many people might come - it’s not hard to make a literal Google form
Maybe it's getting better with some of the more famous recent events like the Travis Scott concert and Korean disaster, but I feel like so many people are just completely oblivious to the danger of crowd crushes.
When you spend most of your life at events and in situations where people have taken proper precautions, you aren't necessarily going to realize why things are done a certain way and assume you can just throw a huge event without proper planning.
This applies to lots of other things too, of course.
as someone who lives ten minutes from where there was a fatal crowd crush with people being pushed against doors at a concert venue those videos were so scary
There absolutely need to be more security guards inside and out. My fiance, one of the most calm and tempered people I know, (understandably) almost got in a fight earlier this week with someone who bumped into him mid-bench press. Disrupting someone's set can lead to serious injury. I can't imagine that with how crowded it was in both gyms there was no possibility of violence lol
Philly is notorious for having people go crazy at sporting events etc. Fusion is really lucky nothing serious happened.
Here in the UK in the 90s, a tragedy happened at the Hillsborogh football stadium where thousands of people went through a narrow tunnel. Over 90 people died. Luckily that didn't happen here, but I did get a panic induced memory to that event watching the footage.
It happened in 1989 but yes anyone and everyone should look that up.
@@Jayfive276 Oh gosh, you're right! My bad. Mixed up the date.
That's exactly what I was thinking of, watching that footage. If I was in that girl's place I would be screaming my head off.

Stuff like this makes me so satisfied to be a Planet Fitness member for $30. It’s never packed and I don’t even crave a haircut in the middle of cardio.

It's not even near a wealthy area in Philly. Or an area near a college, or on a mass transit line. It is very remote, probably in order to keep land costs down, but I don't see how it pulls that number of people wanting a premium product, from that part of the city.
@@bigdo15335 I was legitimately shocked when I looked it up and saw it was in the Northeast. Like who do they think is going to pay damn near 100 bucks a month for a gym in the Northeast
In 2021 I went to a meet and greet event with a few hundred people. It was MASSIVELY oversold so what was done? They only let 10 people in at a time and everyone else waited in line outside. The staff really wasn't that organized, there was no (at least not visible) security, and it pretty much went smoothly! Door systems can work miracles even with short staffing, sometimes the simple things are overlooked!
Funniest part of this to me is the 10 million gym advertising itself solely to mega-gym bros and younger clientele. A salon/barbershop isn't going to attract many people especially since a membership alone gets you nothing.
Many others gyms offer daycare/baby sitters while parents workout. That is a common perk for local, non-franchise, gyms and a membership instantly becomes worth it even if the parent isn't a gym bro.
right? The YMCA by me has better perks for the same price
I like the gym I go to. Everyone leaves me alone and I don't bother anyone else. In the year I've been going I've had maybe 3 conversations with someone else. 2 of those were with the staff member the day I joined.
I’ve never been to a gym opening, but I have been to a rollercoaster opening. While people were no where near as aggressive as people in this video seem, there was a crowd rushing to be first in line (myself among them) that was quickly handled by security. There’s a way to talk to people and lead and spread them out. Good security professionals know how to do this, but if you don’t give them enough support or clearly communicate reasonable expectations (“if you keep running you’ll be kicked out” was made very apparent to us) then it will devolve.
They should have made this a ticketed event to avoid all the chaos they caused
Idk what the laws specify in that location, but generally large gatherings require some sort of police and fire department supervision to make sure exits aren’t blocked etc. They are REALLY lucky this didn’t turn out worse than it did 😬
There’s just something about gyms and the hardcore gym environment that triggers my fight or flight response.
I’ll stick with my basement for working out.
That Fusion Gym is not too far from me. For what it contains, $85 is actually not bad, but the owner (or manager, or whoever was in that video) seems like he is trying to do that fake gymbro, tough guy persona, which is something that only works on social media. Most gym guys I know are chill and laid back, even the large guys just like to lift and have a good time. Most gym goers see that alpha bro type of behavior as lame. It seems like a quality gym, but the owner doesn't seem like a pleasant person.
yeah if that’s the owner, they are completely fucked. for their sake, I hope he’s just the media manager and gets fired asap

Can't stop laughing at that dude yelling "Fuck Carly she's a god damn liar"
can we take a minute to go back to the number of memberships they plan on selling and the max capacity of the gym cause I don't think the math works out. you're gonna sign up 10,000 members but you can only have 450 people in the building at once.
I mean if people are only coming in for like 1-2 hours, assuming its open 7 days per week, then *maybe* it could work?? but even then, there are times that are way more popular than other times so in those cases its gonna be pretty damn crowded
not to mention all the other issues with his statement with him assuming he can somehow just get 10,000 members and make all their money back, without even considering all the other costs to keep a gym like this functioning
The math actually works fine for gyms because 85-95% of people who have gym memberships never set foot into the gym. So the membership is just free money basically.
Even if a lot of members show up, they definitely would not all show up at the same time like a convention or a concert.
That being said, I don’t think I’ve heard of a gym with memberships in the 5-digits before.
@@52andattitude48 there’s a HUGE difference between your standard planet fitness membership that’s only like $20ish VS a whole ass $85 a month though. And then that’s not to include what actually comes with said membership since the guys in the video said that the additional stuff isn’t even included.
Also their numbers require a stable fixed amount of members from the first month onwards. Everyone's going to sign up in the first month? Maybe they do have a more complex plan with how many people they expect to sign up each month and drop off rates, but the numbers he actually said is just simplistic nonsense.
I have worked and work out in a small gym and there are no less than 5 and up to 15 gym employees at any given time.. no security because it’s a community center…. The amount of staff this places needs is way more than they have, and how were there not LIABILITY WAIVERS?????
The amount of crowd crush incidents in the past few years is terrifying. Has covid made event organisers forget how crowds work??

"We couldn't let anyone in because the people waiting outside didn't know how to act!" Why blame the people attending. It's very clear it was not due to their behavior but your unpreparedness. He should've just told the truth which I'm 99.9% sure was "We couldn't let more people in at once because we were at capacity. We didn't expect such large turnout so we were not prepared with a plan for how to accommodate if there are more people attending than we can have in the building at once." This is why I love the YMCA. It’s me (32) and people over 50 and we all just give a polite nod and mind our own business. The most disturbance is when some lady on a treadmill thinks it’s ok to talk loudly on her speakerphone.
oh i actually love learning about crowd crushes!! these guys are actually lucky there wasn't multiple deaths and severe injuries
The math for how they're going to recoup the investment costs for Fusion Gym doesn't factor in the monthly costs to run the gym??? Like, employees, electric, water. The cost of running a restaurant and a retail store??? And even if it did, how are you signing up ten thousand people in your first month??
Oh yea, 4 guards for 5000 people that's going to go well every time...
Live in philly and I kept being like oh I wonder where in philly they made it then the second Fairless Hills was mentioned I knew EXACTLY where it was, used to be a furniture store.
As an indiana resident…. This is absurd to me. A big gym opened here…. They had a couple hundred over a day with pre signed up blocks of time. Most just walked through to see the offerings and left. Few actually worked out that day.
I will say, gyms full of jacked people have been the most accepting in my experienced, they encourage you the most
they know what it takes to get there
🤭
Just had a super jacked guy come up to me after a set the day before yesterday to just tell me he's noticed how much work I've been putting in and how impressed he was. That honestly meant the world to me and was a super sweet interaction! I like my gym lol
The best gym I ever went to was a serious lifters gym near my apartment. It was pretty small but you never had to wait more than 5 to 10 minutes for any equipment, everyone was super nice and they even gave me a key to the place so I could come in early and work out before work.
There is no sale or special gym equipment or whatever that would make it worth it to me to deal with that lol. Honestly, I don't think I'd willingly participate in that kind of crowd in any context outside of revolution or a zombie apocalypse.
I dont really understand why a gym opening would be so chaotic and packed.
I'm confused but not surprised. I remember being confused the same way during the height of the pandemic when gym-crazy ppl were throwing such huge fits over not being able to go to gyms. It's just a gym?? Gym culture is so weirdly intense. 🤷
Clout chasing bums
My favourite time to go to the gym was level 2 covid and there was SPACE between people and machines. These opening days are like my worst nightmare
i recently realized Amanda makes the "Dreamworks face" a lot in her videos/thumbnails, and now I can't unsee it.
Just so frustrating seeing how cavalier these businesses acted regarding public safety. Unfortunately I don’t see them facing much consequences beyond a few days of bad press and maybe some fines. It’s amazing in a sad way, especially after Astroworld and Itaewon. I do wonder if the crowds would have been that big for gym openings before COVID…we’re all so eager to get out and do things again, and organizers have to be prepared for that.
I think events like this show how many folks failed US history cause it's like a core principle that people do not respond well when they're given freedom and then someone tries to take it away. As in, trying to get people to follow rules that you never gave them from jump, is an exercise in futility. Also, as someone who has had to plan events on a much much much smaller scale, you CANNOT trust people to use common sense. There NEEDS to be not only a structure in place but the manpower to enforce said structure. Otherwise the structure does not exist...
There are museums that do it better than this. Like maybe even if they had like timed entry. Like make it free, but you still have to sign up and can only enter during a set time, with a ticket. Then they would at least know what to expect based off that. This is bonkers. And I feel that yeah, it’s definitely dangerous for the influencer especially because these are GYM people.
As someone who hates crowds, I would never go to any kind of grand opening or opening day of anything. I’ll never understand the people that love that stuff, or people that are obsessed with fame and meeting influencers or celebrities. It’s all so alien to me. Which is why I like these videos, gives me a glimpse into that world I’ll never venture in to. Side note: if you’re waiting in line to go to a gym you don’t have a membership with, you’re not interested in just working out lol so like why?
It’s amazing this still happens that after so many poorly planned events have gone down the same way
So weird to turn a workout into an event haha- training is like an ongoing thing - so this seems like THE day you'd want to skip going if you actually care about getting a good workout in😅 but I guess working out isn't actually the point of these 🤷🏿♀️
Gods, I'm so happy my gym is far from that. It's kinda small and quite cozy, despite being literally in a car factory lmao.
Only having four(4) security guards isn't enough just considering how large the gym is. I don't know how many would be enough, but it's def more than FOUR...
I’m BEGGING Swell to interview Carlie for the podcast
In Philadelphia I can promise you no one from Philly (born, raised, or has lived there for a while) is going to spend $70-$100 on a gym membership
Whose ever been to a gym and been like "huh I could go for a haircut right about now?"
Lol you would be shocked, there are so many mirrors
I was wondering what was happening when I drove past that fusion gym and saw so many people and people parking all over the area. I was wondering what the inside of that old Mealey's was going to look like as a gym.
