  • Talking to asian parents about dating is perhaps one of the most terrifying and horrific things an asian child can go through while growing up. We talk a little about our own experiences and discuss why we think asian parents have a hard time communicating with their kids. How did you deal with this when you were growing up.

    I feel obstructed mostly by my mom where even at the mention of ANY guy, she would think "you need protection", don't get raped, etc. she is suspicious of any friendships with guys and she really only emphasizes the possibilities of bad situations and basically lives out of fear: every man is a sexual predator. it really sickens me.
    it's silly how parents say "you can come to me for anything" for support yet when you do, all you get is yelling, getting scolded, and lectures. they do come from good intentions, but that's where parents become helicopter parents and do more harm than good to your self-confidence, esteem, and love life.

      I think its a scary world out there for a lot of people. I learned about a term called Mean World syndrome in college. It basically states that we are bombarded with negative stories in the media constantly and that begins to shape our view of the world. Unfortunately you see more and more people acting like this :( -Allen

      Girl, I'm not even Asian but this is so relatable. I used to think that all man are good for nothings that only wanted to hurt you (emotionally or physically) due to this upbringing. Typing this out sounds so absurd.
      It's sad and ironical I learnt a lot about social interaction by talking to friends on the internet but I'm glad about it. I learnt that not every man is there to screw your life over. I used to be in shock that when I met my SO one day and realised that there are many wonderful kind men like him, who really care about you. I hope that every girl in a similar situation will be able to figure out things for her and find someone who loves and appreciates her 😊

      in my family my mum is vietnamese and dad is Chinese
      my mum is actually the opposite to what most Asian mums are like when the approach comes to dating she basically is like if your happy with that girl (even a non asian girl)it's fine but same sex marriage would be a diffrent story.
      my Chinese dad is also similar expect it's more traditional so I can't even get a relationship until after university and that i need a stable job and income so those are the 2 diffrent sides for me.

    I'm too socially awkward to get into a romantic relationship, let alone to make friends! So "having a relationship" was never a real topic. :P
    My mom brings it up sometimes though, saying stuff like "You need to know how to do - - - to be a good mother."
    The most annoying are my Asian relatives and acquaintances. Every time they see me, they ask "Texting your boyfriend?" or something like "Do you have a boyfriend?", I'm always like ........... no. No.
    Idk I think that it's super embarrassing.

    I’ve always been to uncomfortable talking about relationships to my parents. My dad is a western guy, and my mom is Cambodian. So you would think I would get the best of both worlds having a chill white dad and a strict Asian mom but that’s not the case. My mom says I can’t date until I’m out of college, but I feel like while I’m too busy trying to get my life together after graduation, finding a boyfriend would get harder and harder, then eventually I’ll end up alone and single because I was restricted from doing those sort of things as a teen. I feel like the experience would be more awkward too when I have a relationship when I’m older. My dad is too scary to talk to about these types of things and it makes me the most uncomfortable talking to him, he’s a nice person and all, but he holds grudges, is passive aggressive, and really scary. I feel like if I ever told him I had a boyfriend he would kill him and disown me. :(

    My parents keep on telling me to take my time with relationships (I'm 24 and never dated), but lately they'd ask occasional questions about my female friends, like, oh, does she take care of you well, or is she a good friend, repeatedly, over and over again, to the point I literally stop telling my parents whenever I'm hanging out with a female friend.

    I'm Chinese and this is so true that my parents have never told me ANYTHING about dating. So I've never been in a relationship until now (I'm 26) and I have to learn everything all at once or as I go. It's tough.

    i'm 22. and you know what my mom said when i was 12 which till this day still fresh in my mind? "Don't have a boyfriend until you have a job." I'm starting to think that would be a lie as well. And I could relate so much to 'Now what do we do for first relationship?' Honestly, I have no idea 😂

    Growing up in China, this is what parents around me do
    (excluding mine, they are cool, crazy by Chinese standard. My mom never said lying is bad, just that if you lie and get caught, you will face consequences, resulting in me having no concept of right and wrong but will follow the law due to fear of prison)
    My friends told me: "focus on study they say, don't get relationship until you finish PhD they say, and immediately afterward, they would say you are 24, why don't you have boy/girlfriend, and they will sign you up for all kinds of dating for marriage agencies"

    Could you guys do a video about homosexuality on asian society/culture? I had a coworker who was a Japanese gay man, and he told that his parents would never say anything to him about it, but every time the subject was brought the disappointment on their faces was very visible, and they never allowed him to introduce any of his boyfriends to them, they would always make an excuse to avoid it, and overall in Japan he never faced direct homophobia like he faced when he moved back here to Brazil, so that made me curious if that is the case with other Asian cultures, or even if it's a commonplace or it is just his family who acts that way.

      @Orlafis 8 років тому +4

      ***** at least in contrast to what people suffer here in Brazil it's absurdly different, in his words, it was more a "let's not delve into this topic" kinda of thing, but everyone would treat him normally as long as he would not "demonstrate" most people were indifferent, while here in Brazil there's a wide spectrum from people who would be really excited to show support, to people who are beat to death just for "looking kinda gay".

    Oh one other difference I noticed was talking to my parents just about guys I am attracted to. For example when I was I think 16 there was this guy I was writing letters to as a pen pal, later I found out he liked but I didn't think of him that way so I told him about this guy I liked and when he responded he gave me advice about the guy. Well normally I would read his letters out loud to my family so they could have an up date one him and how he was too g to, vut.tgis time I didn't read the whole thing because I left out the part about the guy I liked, well my dad noticed that it wasn't the whole letter and asked why I didn't read it, he thought that may be the boy had said something inappropriate to me and I didn't want to read it, but I ended up handing over the letter and he read the part, then my parents took me into their room for a talk. They were mad but not for the reason that you might think. They were mad that I hadn't felt comfortable telling them about the guy I liked, they were disappointed that i felt I needed to hide that part of the letter. So after that I always would tell them those things cause I didn't want to hurt them

    First off guys I think that those video clips from those movies are absolutely hysterical and the points you guys have a pretty relevant but you also have a put in the perspective that a lot of fathers are extra per extra extra protective of their daughters due to the fact that they know most men think about 23 hours out of the day so because of that you know you can't really get mad at them because their you know protecting of the parents and for them to protect the sons is because they don't want the sons knocking up every woman that comes the hump in front of their house Lotta pregnant bellies flopping around I don't want that, so great video all in all you guys are wonderful

    My mom was always like '' Y'know, I'm telling you how everything goes, then you do it your way and face everything yourself " so I suppose this kinda gave me freedom, but at the same time made me not really want to do some things, mostly because I was scared. Dating wise ( as someone who's gay ) well she doesn't really care, like besides the sex talks that go like " ALWAYS USE CONDOMS, DON'T DO IT WITHOUT ONE " I guess it's pretty chill, but I'm still gonna hide my relationships from her >.> I feel like it's not her bussiness to know that

    I'm in a Thai family. When I was younger, my mother would always be cautious of me hanging out with males, friend or not, and always said "make sure there's another female". I can understand why since we both have had bad experiences with males, but it got annoying after a while. I'm older now (still a teenager though) and I've had much more freedom with who I hang out with and who's house I can go to. Either she's okay with it or just very oblivious because I never hide the fact that I'm going to a male's house or hanging with one alone, so I'm always double checking like, "Hey I'm hanging out with *male name* today. I'm going to HIS HOUSE and we're playing video games in HIS ROOM. Then we're cooking in HIS kitchen. Okay mum???". I'm not one to lie to my mother lol
    I recently got into my first relationship and well she thinks I'm too young (which is true tbh) but she hasn't really tried to stop me. It took me a week to tell her I got into one because she didn't pick up my hints- so I had to be direct. Went better than I expected but I'm still a bit worried haha

    I actually grew up in a conservative christian Russian home where dating is kinda seen as a sin. You either get married, or you keep every person of the opposite sex at arm's length #bibledistance.
    It's been really tough on me because I am 18 now and I want to date, but I don't want my family finding out and at the same time, I don't know how to properly have a relationship with a guy. My parents are Asian. I don't think they have ever limited me in dating. But how would I know? I never dated. Now, I am in my mid-20s and still single. I'd rather be single for the rest of my life. It keeps things simple. My mother grew up in China and lived in China until her 30s. During her 20s, she dated several men with the aim of finding a spouse. She had a full-time job as a doctor and lived with her parents, so there was likely no hanky-panky going on in any of the relationships, if you know what I mean. My father never dated anyone in his 20s or earlier. My mother was my father's first date. They met through a dating advertisement, and they stayed together ever since.

I liked this guy and we had a few dates but nothing too serious. But when i had my second date i asked my mom if i could meet him. It wasn't really a date. We hung up at his house and watched a few filmes. But my mom said no and talked with me about not being allowed to have a boyfriend because i should focus on my studies. Well ,i was a little rebellious and always went out with him without telling my mom. At the end it didn't work out between him and me but it was still my first experience with a boy and being rebellious the first time.

    My parents aren't so strict or anything. But they'd prefer it if I dated/married a girl from a family they know of, so that they're already sure she's from a good family rather than a stranger.
    I tell them that I can literally meet any girl all around this world of 7+billion people you know. I don't want to limit myself to just one ethnicity or even more specifically the girls from families my parents know.
    To be honest though, if I do have to think about it, I don't think it's such a bad deal in itself. Other cultures can be so demanding/different. I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up marrying a girl like that.

    Growing up, it was not okay to be dating boys. So when I had a crush on someone of the opposite sex, I just didn't know how to handle it. I would bottle it up, not reveal anything and actively try to avoid them.

    Try “hiding” relationship from parents. So what I mean by “hiding” is they knew we hung out, but never knew how close we were. He is Asian American born in America, I was born in Asia. His parents are very Americanized and mine are very traditional. Well naturally my parents mentally attacked him. My dad is a city police officer so he really got on him!!! Anyway he asked me to marry him and we kept trying to introduce this to my parents... well growing up back and forth between japan and America I had no Asian friends till high school. I was always the outcast that no one understood and I got very depressed and my mental health use to be very bad until me and him were together. And I had enough at a certain point and well... instead of my parents accepting his marriage proposal other things happened and now we had to tell them I was pregnant with our first son! They were very happy it was a boy and actually took this better than the marriage thing. We have two sons and have been together for 4 years now. I hope to get married to him when I finish college. I am 19 he is 20, we had our babies very young! My parents looked at it as we were being selfish and disrespectful that we would do this without being married but they are now very happy, and so are we! It all works out! BUT I am still treated like child 😂

Tashi was nickname i was given at age of 3 month because my babysitter could not say my first name(Tatiana) I added KO to the end of because people were getting me confused with the name Toshi...I am very surprised you knew I was of Jewish ancestry most people don't think of Jews as an ethnicity so I am very impressed!

    Are religious ideas involved in this? Because for most of the western cultures that traditionally followed the Abrahamic religions, sex before marriage was/is regarded as a sin, which is absolutely stupid but is there a similar element in chinese/east asian cultures?

    • @sunnynexxt
      @sunnynexxt 8 років тому

      Sam Eastern religions are not like your religions of the book, instead they are like values systems that are passed on from generation to generation over centuries. There are no strict, hard and fast rules but values and rules based on what is universally considered right and moral. It's like listening to your conscience to figure out what's right and what's wrong.

    • @Sam-gy3ok
      @Sam-gy3ok 8 років тому

      Sunny Nexxt That is very realistic to how people actually get their moral codes and what religion is turning into nowdays. The east always amazes me how modern it is in a pre-modern kind of tradition.

    i feel like i can relate to alot of videos on ethnic parent so non white families. my family was not organized it was not normal even compared to my race or ethnic group so i did NOT come from a cultural home per say but my parents spoke tigrinya so not english while living in an american land and the kids did not know how to speak the language so that is my siblings but they do understand th language so they can interpret what is said. they did talk to their kids in eritrean language but not always definitely not the majority of the time. a theme i see difference between white families versus those that are not even when they live in first worlds is that the white family allows dating and fun and her and explanations and no spanking but grounding instead of discipline and they try to be friends with their kids while non white families for the most part spank but not always it depends again which person it is cause they may follow white people traditions if they live in first worlds but anyways other things just not a strong communication with children and it is love in its own way. so anyways on the dating topic i was too ill for that as an option but yeah so ethnic families tend to be against dating as a whole until a person is finished with school and has a career or not always it depends the specific ethnic group per say. alot of hispanics and blacks and asian people date in high school so i am not saying it is not common at all to date. but anyways i dont know the reason the stories resonate not just this but like what asian parents do or what an african family is my family did not discuss when i was not an adult so as a child what a family was and stuff and since i live with them is probably the biggest reason i am so attracted on topics of cultural parenting styles not just the topic on this video. but anyways though my family do not follow a cultural behavior per say for the most part the amount of restriction put on my life makes me feel closer to certain types of people on youtube it makes me feel like i can relate. now asians are more so educated and strict so that is not something i know what that feels like. but i do know what not being allowed to do normal things are and what poor is so cheap or just not teaching friends are important. i think asian culture teaches job is important and so is family but they dont see the importance necessairly in parities or friends. they do have friends but they try stay with their culture not all of them but if they are trying to keep their asian traditions for those that try that. something like they value introverts vs extroverts so i am not saying i am right but supossedly that is what i learned from some videos on youtube about asian culture. anyways i am not trying to behave as any culture but i am more so a first world type. i am just going to be american cause that is all i know but i am not white. so i think that culture has the strongest influcen to me just cause that is what the books show and i dont have motivation to following a third or second world country so the right ways just following the christian way rather then just some sortt of time trend but whatever.

Social interactions in a more Western way are usually more open, and the word awkward don't apply so much to the insiders but Vice Versa.
