Ray Davies composed classic Kinks track reflecting on everyday folk aspiring to be Hollywood stars. The song names several famous actors of 20th century film (including Greta Garbo, Rudolph Valentino, Bela Lugosi, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe) and mentions LA’s Hollywood Boulevard, alluding to its Walk of Fame. Taken from The Kinks’ seminal 1972 RCA album Everybody’s In Show-Biz - Everybody’s A Star.

The Kinks are much more than celluloid heroes. Every decade that they released an album they captured the pertinent moments and thoughts of England and a very large part of the US. My younger friends said they were dated. My answer is to always sing a Ray Davies song. "Oh wow, what's that!?" they all shout. "A dated band ," I reply. Oops! Now they're listening to WORDS not just the music! This song and Well Respected Man are my favorites to trick them with. I've performed Dave Davies' Strangers at many a wedding party. Classics are forever, no matter how old they are. The Kinks are a solid classic!

@@barryphillips6845most of the time, it depended on what Ray wrote actually. They could change tempo, mood and type in a heartbeat! The live cut of 'Victoria' from the 70s had my goddaughter's friends dancing like idiots five years ago! Somebody said it was a great song about a girlfriend! My goddaughter looked at me and said "Didn't he say Victoria was his queen, like, Queen Victoria?" "Yep! The Davies brothers can turn anybody into a party!" Was my reply!

True, I've called them a National Treasure and I am not even English. But songs like the The Village Green Preservation Society and Muswell Hillbilly make me feel like I am. I heard that they were banned from touring the USA for a long time because Ray and Dave were always creating a rumpus. Don't know if it's true or not. I saw them the first opportunity I got which was when they were touring to promote this album.

Okay, this is my alltime favourite song. I can't say enough about how much I love this song. I'd say it has actually had a profound influence on my personal worldview. That's how much of an impression this song has made on me. The humanity and wisdom in this song touch my heart like no other song ever has.
As for this new version, the mix is fine, it sounds good, but I'm afraid I can never come to terms with this song being edited. A song this great should never be cut. I know I saw The Kinks and Ray Davies solo numerous times over the years and I always loved it when they performed this song yet it always grated me a bit too when they cut out the bit with George Sanders and Mickey Rooney. That should never happen!!! And it bugs the hell out of me that we miss Ray's great lyric "And those who are successful, be always on your guard, success walks hand in hand with failure along The Hollywood Boulevard." in this version.

Just got my box set today! I was lucky to be at their show at the Academy in NYC back in 1993. Ray came out with a bottle of Heineken on his head half drunk and as the show went on he became more and more excited. He started throwing paper dishes from the stage and asked everyone to write down their favorite tunes and throw it back on stage(so that the Kinks can play them). He said basically everyone wrote Celluloid Heroes!, which of course he saved it for the last.

    [Refrain]
    Everybody's a dreamer and everybody's a star
And everybody's in movies, doesn't matter who you are
There are stars in every city, in every house and on every street
And if you walk down Hollywood Boulevard, their names are written in concrete
    [Verse 1]
Don't step on Greta Garbo as you walk down the boulevard
She looks so weak and fragile, that's why she tried to be so hard
But they turned her into a princess and they sat her on a throne
But she turned her back on stardom because she wanted to be alone
    [Chorus]
You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard
Some that you recognize, some that you've hardly even heard of
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain
    [Verse 2]
Rudolph Valentino looks very much alive
And he looks up ladies' dresses as they sadly pass him by
Avoid stepping on Bela Lugosi 'cause he's liable to turn and bite
But stand close by Bette Davis because hers was such a lonely life
    [Verse 3]
If you covered him with garbage, George Sanders would still have style
And if you stamped on Mickey Rooney, he would still turn 'round and smile
But please don't tread on dearest Marilyn 'cause she's not very tough
She should have been made of iron or steel, but she was only made of flesh and blood
    [Chorus]
You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard
Some that you recognize, some that you've hardly even heard of
Oh, people who worked and suffered and struggled for fame
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain
    [Refrain]
    Everybody's a dreamer and everybody's a star
And everybody's in show biz, it doesn't matter who you are
And those who are successful, be always on your guard
Success walks hand in hand with failure along Hollywood Boulevard
    [Pre-Chorus]
I wish my life was a nonstop Hollywood movie show
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die
    [Chorus]
You can see all the stars as you walk along Hollywood Boulevard
Some that you recognize, some that you've hardly even heard of
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain
    La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
    La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
    [Outro]
Oh, celluloid heroes never feel any pain
Oh, celluloid heroes never really die

This single cut eliminates almost half the song, and most of it's emotional impact. No wonder it tanked as a single when released. The song was butchered. Folks here don't seem to realize the difference. Some Kinks fans. Listen to the album version, the way Ray wanted you to.

UK single was the album cut, all 6m19s. US single was 4 1/2 minute version. I agree this cut at 3 1/2 loses the impact, but I think this modern edit probably would have gotten more attention back in 1972. Either way, this song finds most people eventually.

What is the history of this assembly? It definitely has period footage of the band, but there's a lot of modern adds (especially expanding into 1.85 composition, which would not have been done in the 70s). Is this an augmented promo clip for TV, or did someone get access to home movies the band shot and cut this together in the present day?
