Regular feeder minnows make great pets for small tank. Although about 1/2 will die due to them being mistreated as feeders, it's worth it. They're usually about 20 cents each! From my experience, even stuff smaller than 5 gallons can work. Although I recommend 5-10 gallons. They need filtration and although are marketing as "cold-water fish", I found that they thrive and only breed in warmer waters. I recommend keeping about 8 in a 5 gallon tank. They usually get about 1-2 inches, depending on the gender. They breed often and easily. I also recommend filling the tank with plants and hides, but still leaving space to swim. They are pretty active and cute. If you look in the wild, they often huddle real close to eachother in big groups. They have also done well with my betta. Overall a great fish.

I have one female betta and she’s amazing. I nicknamed her Denim, since she looks it. Very nice blue color. She was a $2.99 assorted betta from Petco. She’s grown so big and she’s got a great personality. I wish I could get more since I think they’re so overlooked. What size tank would you suggest for a sorority? Did you get yours all really small or can you add some in as adults?
I like white cloud minnows, they can thrive in very cold temperatures and stay small. The poor man's cardinal tetra. I like the standard ones better than the golden, and the long fin variety are stunning.
Hi John and Lisa, great job with your this wonderful video! A 5 gallon is a very nice addition to a desktop or shelf. Thanks for sharing and I look forward looking to meeting both of them you with my KGTROPICALS T-shirt in a couple weeks in Chicago. I also plan to become a member next week 👍.

I have never seen about half the fish on this list in fish stores in my area ( St. Louis). I think a lot of less common fish never get distributed much beyond the coastal import regions.
You should've seen the size of my female endler. I originally had a gang of them in my 14 galon together with my dwarf american frogs but then the endlers moved to the 114 galon. The males remained small and cute but the females? The females ended up to a size of 2 inches and I had one beast that grew more than that. Guppy monster fish!! :D Though Lisa, you've started to inspire me to get female bettas, shhh don't tell my husband. He thinks three thanks is quite enough as it is :D
Pshhh 3 tanks isn't that bad! We have 6 running right now with a total volume of 120 gallons. I made a joke about getting a 150g tank and my girlfriend just gave me a look of absolute fear
I respectfully disagree about keeping WCM minnows in a 5g. They are very active fish and while yes they are super hardy and could probably be ok in a 5G, they need to have at the minimum a 15G tank to really strut their stuff. I used to breed them for a few years and honestly a 20-30G will get the most out of these fish as they are super active and will explore every inch of an aquarium, more so than Danios, Guppies and Tetras from what I've seen from experience.
It's because endler's guppies was the title used for both guppies and endler's live-bearers. Eventually he reached the conclusion that they were two different species and we had endler's guppies and endler's live-bearers officially. But in the unofficial world guppies just went by guppies because it was a unique name. Meanwhile, the average person couldn't tell the difference between guppies and endler's live-bearers so the original (interchangeable) names of endler's live-bearers anf endler's guppies were used. "Guppies" being a different species became common knowledge, but due to linguistic quirks endler's guppies turned into guppies, people found out endler's live-bearers were different, but endler's guppies as a name for endler's live-bearers stuck.
I want to meet you guys one day... if I ever have a question you guys already have a whole video about it... thanks guys your my favorite UA-camrs 🤫...your definitely an idol for me that I strive to become like one day

I saw a comment on here that says 5 gallons is too small for any fish and it irritated me a little. If you know what you’re doing and don’t overstock the tank, 5 gallons seems pretty spacious knowing that some people still keep fish in bowls without heat or a filter. I would much rather have an under stocked 5 gal with a Betta than an overcrowded 10 gallon.
I purchase a red female beta who was in a cup at the store and 2neons 2tetras in my 5 gallon tank. initally the beta seemed a bit shy hardly moving around. Now after 2 weeks she is all over the tank and happy. Do fish sleep?
I recently purchased a little female Betta with fin rot and red specks on her head. She’s healed now and ready to be moved into her cycled and planted 5 gal. I was originally planning to add a few females, but after researching found they could be aggressive and even kill each other. Have you had any problems with yours?
I had 2 female betta fish and I had to separate them. I set them in bowls side by side and they were perfectly fine but the second I tried to introduce them to the tank, they tried to fight, so I separated them.
My female betta is such a cutie. Within a couple days she was warmed up to me and gets so excited to see me and it took my other fish a few weeks at least to swim up to me
We bought a 5 gal tank for a male beta. After the first night, he disappeared. We found him finally and realized he jumped out through the small opening between the lid and the pump. Very sad moment for us and we’d like to find another beta, but we’re worried it will happen again. We did everything by the book (we think) with water preparation and temperature. Is this common? He seemed happy in a fishbowl for about 2 weeks before transferring him to the aquarium.
Been doing research and desided to put some kind of algae eater in with my female betta, she has had tank mates before and has the "if you leave me alone I'll leave you alone" kind of personality. I only have the space for one algae eater. My female betta is the only thing in a 5 gallon tank she's about one inch, but is only about 4-5 months so I don't know if she'll get bigger. I desided to avoid snails and shrimp do to my inexperience as well as fear of them multiplying. I would appreciate any suggestions and will do more thorough research, but ideas are welcome if anyone has time. (And yes I am aware algae eaters need more than just the algae in the tank and I promise research will be done before anything is bought) thanks for any input!
What tanks or tank brands would you recommend?? Theres so many mixed reviews for so many tanks and usually you have to replace the filter the tank comes with. I DONT KNOW WHAT TANK TO GET!!!
Lizzy Zamora I always buy the cheap ones (Aqueon) when they are 1$/gallon and then reinforce the glass with aquarium seal before using. Great way to save a ton of money- just make sure reinforce their bigger ones (29+ gallon) before using because they can be weak
how many of the fish on the list would also be good tank formates for a betta *in* a 5 gallon? I read someone claiming as long as you add the betta last so it hasn't established territory it's fine to add guppies, others say only in 10 gallons not 5
Airstones are always helpful, especially if your filter doesn't create bubbles on the surface. A big thing with bettas is that they're labyrinth fish, meaning they sort of sip oxygen from the water surface. So the bubbler isn't as important, but is still worth getting

They cost about the same by me for some reason. They are wonderful fish I personally find them prettier than cardinal and neon tetras.
Can't wait to meet you Denny 🙂
Love your koi beta. I got a gorgeous one the other day. Would love to get into shrimp.
I love white clouds! They are so underrated. Their derpy faces makes me smile
my 10 gal is currently cycling but i decided early on that i wanted a female betta because i also felt bad that they were overlooked! they’re beautiful too :-(
I have a lil baby female betta. She’s in a lightly planted 5 gallon and I got her 5 months ago. She’s really cute and has a lot of personality! I would recommend female bettas for beginners
This is a great video. I have learned about a few more that we might want.
*Shrimp are honestly awesome!*
I threw 12 shrimp into my 25 Litre aquarium 3 weeks ago and I now have my first babies floating around!
Do a top 10 for a 10g!
I love my female bettas. To me, they are just as personable and beautiful as the males.
I had my betta in a 5 gallon and moved him to 10 gallon and I gotta say I think that should be the minimum. He became way more colorful and active once I gave him extra space, I keep him with some cory cats and Otto cats.
nice vid guys!
however - these CPDs in the video look starving or not healthy, don't you think?
Smeal Kapor I think they’re discolored due to underfeeding, but not starving.
I noticed the same, Smeal Kapor.
I love my Endlers! I have 6 in a 10g at the moment. I might add a couple more in the future. They have a couple of Amanos as tank mates.
EbonRaven how are they with the amanos? do you find the amanos hide from them?
@@ralchee7850 My Amanos don't really hide a lot, they just eat under things. ;) But the Endlers and the Amanos have no trouble together at all. I have 2 ancient Endlers left and I have about 15 each Cherry Shrimp and Amanos at the moment. The worst I have to deal with is the Amanos going around and punching the Cherry shrimp to take food from them. So I spread the food around a LOT. :)

I have a gorgeous female koi betta that’s light red with dark red splashes and has white on her belly. She is gorgeous. She had an injured eye, and nobody in the store was going to buy her, I asked the guy for a discount because of the missing eye because she’s hard to keep I gotta tap the tank so she goes to the top and gets the food after hours of looking for it.But he didn’t give me the discount I thought she was worth it and she’s amazing. Also wait I didn’t see neon tetras here, they’re like the best for small tanks.
Huge fan of rasbora in general. I have Hengeli and they're such fun lively little guy's 😊
Another nice review, thanks ! Jim

Thank you for this video!!! It was really helpful!!!
hey @KGTropicals, i have a 5 gallon tank with a few guppies and i have questions. 1. How many guppies would you recommend? 2. would you recommend a heater? and 3. what fish are good tankmates for guppies. I have a turquoise and yellow tail guppy. Please respond.
Love the sorority you got going lisa! Great video John!
I have never seen about half the fish on this list in fish stores in my area ( St. Louis). I think a lot of less common fish never get distributed much beyond the coastal import regions.
They are called endler livebearers because they are so proficient breeders an have among the highest rate of hybridnizing with other guppie species
I just got my wisdom teeth out and the first thing I did was go onto your channel and watch fish videos
Emerald eye rasboras are amazing in 5g too super tight schooling fish
You should've seen the size of my female endler. I originally had a gang of them in my 14 galon together with my dwarf american frogs but then the endlers moved to the 114 galon. The males remained small and cute but the females? The females ended up to a size of 2 inches and I had one beast that grew more than that. Guppy monster fish!! :D
Though Lisa, you've started to inspire me to get female bettas, shhh don't tell my husband. He thinks three thanks is quite enough as it is :D
Pshhh 3 tanks isn't that bad! We have 6 running right now with a total volume of 120 gallons. I made a joke about getting a 150g tank and my girlfriend just gave me a look of absolute fear
excellent video, thank you!
Facts!
I vote next 10 things is about keeping a sorority tank and/or planted tanks! 💕☺️
Great video Lisa and John! I have shrimp with guppies and endlers. ♥️😊
Them: Guppies are really small!
Me with my giant 2-3 inch female guppies: *Suprised pikachu face*
Haha
You think some endless would be ok with a Male betta,
Should of waited lol you answered my question at the end of you're video
I want to meet you guys one day... if I ever have a question you guys already have a whole video about it... thanks guys your my favorite UA-camrs 🤫...your definitely an idol for me that I strive to become like one day
Awesome Video as Always, Thanks for Sharing!😊
I love these 10 things videos. They are quite informative considering how much time the videos usually are. 🐠🐟❤️
I have a male and 2 female bettas. I had 2 males but one passed away, i went to petco for a giant plakat male but instead brought home the smallest little female. She was solid white when i got her but now is almost completely black! My other girl was at the store for months and was brown with stress stripes, she's now a stunning electric blue with a red head and almost purple fins!
Hi from the uk new fish keeper and new viewer I love your videos! I have just brought a second tank which is 5 gallon and always wanted a betta fish I love the endlers and celestial danios could this work all together if so at what numbers would you go with for the endlers and celestial danios? 😃
To be honest I think a 5 gallon is too small for multiple different species. Probably best to do either a Betta or a small group of shoaling fish
You give the best information
I purchase a red female beta who was in a cup at the store and 2neons 2tetras in my 5 gallon tank. initally the beta seemed a bit shy hardly moving around. Now after 2 weeks she is all over the tank and happy. Do fish sleep?
Sometimes they take a while to get used to their new tank and tank mates.
As far as I know, they don't, they just rest overnight, nocturnal ones don't rest during nighttime.
Thanks for the video! Can you mix shrimp with smaller fish?
Thank u :)
Great video. I loved it
Great vid AGAIN. But dont for ( for the beginner's) that 5 endlers will become 1000 endlers if you blink. So plan on giving some of those away also.
"My bettas are pretty spoiled sooo what can I say?" Girl, same. My male wont even eat flakes or dry food.
My male betta Denny and frog Castiel get pellets and blood worms
I recently purchased a little female Betta with fin rot and red specks on her head. She’s healed now and ready to be moved into her cycled and planted 5 gal. I was originally planning to add a few females, but after researching found they could be aggressive and even kill each other. Have you had any problems with yours?
I had 2 female betta fish and I had to separate them. I set them in bowls side by side and they were perfectly fine but the second I tried to introduce them to the tank, they tried to fight, so I separated them.
Great list! I wish the camera would focus better though. Newly Subscribed!
My female betta is such a cutie. Within a couple days she was warmed up to me and gets so excited to see me and it took my other fish a few weeks at least to swim up to me
As always, an excellent video from from the dynamic fish duo.
Absolutely agree with the female Betta comment! Love my girls 😍
2:17 Can someone help identify this substrate? Pretty please! I've been wanting to get some like this forever!
Kayleigh it looks like to be fluval stratum or the shrimp and plants substrate!
Great way to save a ton of money- just make sure reinforce their bigger ones (29+ gallon) before using because they can be weak
sometime in my life i want to keep a nano shrimp bowl but I have to learn how to keep plants live first
I have an 8 gallon that’s more tall is there anything that would be able to live In there?
i suggest galaxy rasboras =)
those are great looking
but how many in a 5 gallon
Awesome vid dude. Love the selection.
My Favorite Types of Betta’s:
(Male and Female)
Veiltail
Doubletail
Delta
Super-Delta
Rosetail
Feathertail
Plakat-Koi
Koi Betta
Dumbo-Ear
🐠 ❤️
I have an entire shrimp colony xD so I caught the majority of them and put them all in a massive tank with a few guppy’s (only males)
how many of the fish on the list would also be good tank formates for a betta *in* a 5 gallon? I read someone claiming as long as you add the betta last so it hasn't established territory it's fine to add guppies, others say only in 10 gallons not 5
If I have a filter with a current do I need a bubbling sponge/stone to keep a betta?
I would say you don't HAVE to, but the more movent there is the more oxygen there is in the water
Airstones are always helpful, especially if your filter doesn't create bubbles on the surface. A big thing with bettas is that they're labyrinth fish, meaning they sort of sip oxygen from the water surface. So the bubbler isn't as important, but is still worth getting
