I CAN'T WIN! - NewMadd Motor Has To Come Out!

- So, I have been drive this fine 1955 Chevy Nomad for a couple weeks and it has been pretty darn good. The only real issue I have had was the clutch chattering. So the transmission needed to come out.
I decided to pull the whole motor/transmission so I can detail the engine bay and give the running gear a quick clear/paint

I think most of us don't care what you do. We just enjoy watching.
I'm with you brother. I've been a professional mechanic for a very long time now. Most days I would rather sit back and watch other people work. Plus, it's Dan's car and Dan's money. He can do whatever he wants. The viewers shouldn't have any say in the matter.
Exactly! This is a free show! Ignore the peanut gallery! Dan and Dani are the best.
You always figure it out and I just sit back and watch! Easy Peasy! 😁👍
Use the newer ramshorn manifolds (57 up).goes easy from there for duals. If trans has no mount boss should be coarse spline clutch. Early bell and 3 bolt starter uses large dia. flywheel and 11inch clutch. Was buying 5 thru 7 chevies in the mid 1960's . Muncey 4spd bolts right in. Driveshaft is right lenght.
Also that trans should have coarse output. splines imput &
Agree but a set of headers would give him a bit more power !!! And painted white would help detail it like the "models" were!!!
I agree I was also going to suggest the ram horn style manifolds if he wasn’t going to go with headers since they tend to look cooler and you can even get fancy chrome ones. With that said Dan already decided he’s putting a tunnel ram on it so if history tells us anything that means a set of fender well dumps or long tubes are probably right around the corner. 🤷♂️
@@wrongwayroger2519On a relatively stock 327 the amount of horsepower gained with a set of headers is marginal at best. Add in a nice free flowing dual exhaust and you get a nice sound. A louder exhaust makes you think it has more power. You can use the rams horn manifolds with a good set of duals and have trouble free driving for quite some time. We all know the issues that headers bring with them. To each their own.
@@justingould7348 Yup, those exhaust manifolds are just like the ones on my 265. They are super restricted. If Danny, doesn’t do headers, he can get a set of 327 high performance rams horn manifolds. If he can’t find a stock set, they are reproduced.
Dude, that engine & trans have probably been leaking for years. It would be futile to clean everything up, & paint it, only to have it leak all over everything, again. I'd definitely remove the intake manifold, v. covers, pan, dampener & timing chain cover, fuel pump, and reseal everything. I'd be sure to clean the oil pump pickup. I'd replace the water, & fuel pumps w/ top quality components. Inspect the timing chain, replace if needed.
And a set off freeze plugs ?
@@hansnordstrom2373Core plugs…
Spot on! Oh, and a torque/RV cam.
Right on Bat5917 , And a set of headers with quiet true duel exhaust with electric cutouts !!! LOL Tunnel Ram for better flow might as well help flow with better exhaust also !!! More power for pulling the Nova home from Georgia !!!
Dan, I love the dog dish hubcaps. And I love the original look, and I love the fact you wanna piss off the internet. Love your videos.
Get the over drive working. Cable to the in/out lever , toggle switch the solenoid , easy peasy. By the looks ,rear main might be leaking causing clutch chatter. and might as well do timing chain too.
Hey Dan, over the years and hundreds of engines I've pulled, I've found that when pulling engine and trans together, jack up the rear of the car to gain more angle to clear core support. It helps with the installation too. Keep up the good work.
It's your car, do it your way....we'll watch anything!!
I've been saying that all along.I enjoy watching this show. It's great to see the younger generation highly interested in old classic cars.
I have a 56 I put speedway 2 1/2 ram horns . Look stock breath much better.
I just did the same swap on my 57 136.00 at speedway free shipping
Buy some fender covers. So when you put things on the fenders it does not scratch the paint.
At least old bath towels always some hangin around....
He does things the hardest way possible because that gets more comments.
I think that guy…what’s his name? You know, the one with the dog named Duff…he sells fender covers. Mortske fender covers on DD Speed Shop projects 👍💪😂
And tools don’t fall off.
Put ram horn manifolds on it. They flow almost as good as headers and will match that 327 great.
I love the “I know what you’re thinking but bear with me” vibe as Dan announces the engine is coming out. If you’re not swatting flies with a sledgehammer, you’re doing it wrong
The thing I like about your videos and Prince videos is that you keep me interested in your projects and I don't get bored. I think that of all the builders I watch You and Brent😅 are the best
Dan, Brent, Penny's, Fitzee, Frank's garage, Karl all good Canadian channels
chrome reverse with baby mooms. thats the look for this one.
4 bolts to set transmission on floor. Sometimes you drive me crazy with your methods. Plus the mess, no trash cans or bench.
All in the quest for comments to feed the algorithm
Your separating the trans anyway! Just do that first. Your so painfull to watch pull engines.
@@shadetreemotorsportsmy neck hurts from moving it back and forth saying, no, no, no, no.
An under dash universal ac unit , power steering, and drive it . Just drive it.
Great idea. It needed it. It's the "while we're in there" just take care of a couple (thousands), things. What a gem of a car. Love it.
I'm glad you are cleaning that engine Danny!!! And redoing the clutch and pressure plate brother! Smart thinking!!!
Greetings Dan and Dani I like the dog dish hub caps as well but the black wheels get lost someone else suggested that if you painted them body color they would really stand out and I agree Mike
Sounds like a great plan.
Take care 😊
Headers and dual exhaust. You will love it more.
I like the "dog-dish" hub caps. They have sooooo much more class than let's say, big rims/low profile tires that are seen on a lot of goofy looking cars.
Do a hillbilly rebuild on your motor new valve cover gaskets, oil PAN gaskets and the timing chain.
The rest is okay as long as you've got good oil pressure. That's not smoking too bad. Just make sure the leaks all stop.
Yeah, we don't need another Exxon Valdez.
Sweet patina sauce on everything
Paint rails, new bushings pro modern springs (right stance, right body roll,)
Paint like old colors super pro shocks
Yes, very smart plan. Perfect car to spot repair and keep it as a perfect example of a true survivor with a few select things you want for your personal tastes. Those are my favorite type of cars when I find them, a survivor car, kept nice its whole life. Simply a nice car, not spoiled with a total redo and everything changed to a re-pop. I think you have been right on with the work you have already done. You are amazing, what a nice car that one is. I always hoped you would cherry that car out, my favorite of what you have for cars.
Good Idea Dan !!! It`s like preventive maintenance and nobody likes a chattering clutch !!! Maybe you could find a real nice, cherry hood for the `Ol Girl, just to top it all off, LOL.Very nice Nomad !!! Yep, those are power-pack heads; great for a 283. Rave-On Danni and Dan !!!
When Dani is in the garage it's comedy gold !
My ADD apreciates the way you bounce projects.
i think you previously mentioned an automatic with od and vintage air, that would be the direction I would consider. they dropped the 3-speed manual with od for a reason! The dog dishes look cool But it would also look good with rally wheels.
Great video!! With as much as you use your engine hoist I'm surprised you haven't changed the ram to an air over hydraulic ram. They're only around 120.00 US at Harbor Freight. Everyone I know that have done there's absolutely love them & wish they had done it sooner. Thanks for the awesome content!!
Dan brother you and I have similar issues mine Ford though lol rock on man much inspiration thanks
Careful!!! when you use the "nit pick cleaning and refurbishing" phrase.
That is what I did when I bought my 69 corvette sportwagon,
Was just gonna upgrade the distributer and ignition, change out anything rubber hose wise, the car sat 20 plus years.
That was 3 years ago I started this trip, ended up pulling the heads, due to a mud dobber built a nest in number 7 cylinder, now I'm basically putting in all new gaskets in the motor, and fixing everything or upgrading everything,
I've made 4 attempts putting the driverside head on, finally kicked its butt, instead of it kicking mine, now got to do passenger side head,
Progress is slow, but gaining....
I love the black rims with poverty caps. My favorite look.
Hello Dan . I have been watching you pull and install a lot of engines . Sitting in my recliner it looks as if you have the jack stands on the frame just behind the engine, you could jack up the rear of the car. This in turn would lower the radiator support and raise the firewall. I know you don't like suggestions but you got one anyway!!!! Maybe someone else will read this and try it !!! Be safe and God bless you all !!!!!! Eddy
Hi Dan .. those exhaust manifolds are very rare.. they came only on a ‘55 or ‘56 ..265 V-8 .. I am building an original ‘55 265 numbers matching V-8 and off the internet I had to pay 150.00 American dollars each for those exhaust manifolds .. please don’t throw them away .. I would use them ..only about 15 hp lost on original exhaust manifolds from headers .. they look great on that car they are period correct. This is just my opinion but the large Bel-Air original hubcaps would look very nice and once again period correct.. Your Nomad to me is basically an original car and that would be my theme on the outside and 60’s hot Rod in the drivetrain area .. also the Daisys would be very nice on the Nomad .. I grew up in the 60’s and we all put on Mag wheels to make a statement that this car is mean as hell .. I painted a ‘55 hardtop that color of the Nomad and it was called Regal Turquoise Metallic.. and everyone liked it because it is an original color for ‘55 ..
So there is a Borg Warner transmission manual you should look up! It explains the mechanics and electronics of the overdrive! The power pack heads have bigger valves and I like the way they sound! If you set the transmission up right it is great! If it’s not then the performance and “happy driver” will suffer! It’s not rocket science but you know how to figure things out! When the electronics work right on the transmission you will absolutely know! Things work and your smile will too!
Probably a 327 block with the top of the 283. Just need it going again.
Good thing that's not my garage because that Nomad would be sporting a Big Block 4 speed. Maybe 6 speed. Keep the videos coming.
Single tunnel ram and enough carb spacers to stick out the hood!...Oh,Yeah! 😎
Love It - Single Tunnel Ram and Column Shift for The Win!!!
My 2 cents. As an original piece
Theirs a guy that hones out / ports aluminum intakes . . .
I’d machine / port the heads new bigger valves mild springs
Port the intake and exhaust, pro aluminum water pump (painted), pro harmonic balancer, aluminum pulleys painted, pro timing chain, timing chain cover aluminum painted
The tranny pro built stage 3 gears and internals
Level 2. Pro cam, a new pro 750 cfm carb painted high rise adapter(painted)
All new pro studs and all stainless bolts
Pro linkage for carb and short shift tranny adapt
My gosh, you use the word pro a lot! Did you hear that from someone or what? I spent 40 years selling preformance & stock parts plus building engines & transmissions for vehicles & I never had anyone who actually worked as a mechanic use the word pro, only the wannabes wanting to sound like they knew what they were talking about when in fact they were just showing they didn't have a clue.
Dan i think if your not putting headers on this 327 use the ram horn manifolds like i used on my 65 Impala . They breath better and increase power and then put your duel exhaust on the Ole Girl you will be much happier !
I’m haven’t always been a steelies and caps kinda guy but I’ve really been digging them more and more lately. That may just be symptom of getting older and growing up, not sure but I think what you have looks great.
In a couple years there was some 327 chevys that had 375 hp from the factory. sure wanted one of the 66 novas with that motor.
Hello there cowboy here again as for this car if it ain't broke don't fix it the one thing I would consider is painting the booster and master components flat black the shiny chromish just don't look right.just saying I know in the end you're gonna do whatever you do but you asked anyway remember always be safe healthy and happy God Bless 🤠
"What am I caught on now? My life!" Classic line. Hilarious.
I loved that too. The other great sequence was, Dan: What do I need? Dani: A new hobby. hahahaha I love these two, they're the modern-day Honeymooners.
Awesome job on pulling the engine, transmission out. Man it is vary dirty as ever. Make sure the new stuff is right for it. Okay. Keep up the great work.
I’ve pulled a lot of motors and used moving blankets on the roof then stored the hoods upside down on the roof out of damage way.
I think those #520 heads were the small valve/small combustion chamber units found on the 283ci/ 220hp engines in the 60's. I had a nice set on a "stock" prepared engine that made about 320 hp at the flywheel, so they are serviceable for street rodding.
Man u on a roll..good work..u get more work done in a week then most in a month.
You might check closely for numbers in the stamp pad on the front. I found that Pontiac put Chevy engines in the Canada cars that were painted blue. Maybe who ever built the car painted the engine to match the car color. There are casting numbers on the block and heads that tell the month day and year for the block/heads. Don't remember for sure but with that vent tube on the back of the block it must be before "66. Keep up the good work. BTW, put a new bushing in the crank while you have the trans out
DD Supershops , where Dan does engine / trans swaps like most people change their socks . And we are captivated 😊
Dan, worn motor mounts can cause clutch issues so might be a good idea to replace these. Good luck.
I love the rims and caps looks so good
Ya Leave well enough alone. Dan. Stay safe.
You should put a 4 speed and floor shifter in. It would be so much ore enjoyable to drive that way.
Check the flange on the crankshaft where the flywheel bolts on 283 and 327 flanges are different.
As someone else commented, I do like chromed reverse wheels with baby moons for a classic look 245/70 15's 🇨🇦
305" were GM blue, 307" were Chevy red/orange. 56 SBC was red, 57 265" was yellow and 283" was Chevy red/orange. I get conflicting info on the 55s , some say 265" was gray/blue and some say orange. Maybe it depended on the manufacturing plant.
Its out, its right there, New gaskets on all the tins, remove and block the tube on the back of the intake( unless you replacing the intake without a open crank ventilator, I am thinking the motor at one point may have been painted to kind of match the body, then someone else painted the orange from the top as a 327 would not have been GM corporate Blue. I am right certain a 283 powerpack heads( double hump) on a 327 make that a 327/300 HP, 375 heads would have been 327/375 horse heads.Double hump with a triangle in the middle. I think that is actually an mechanics motor, best heads on a good motor.
Gotta love those hubcaps!! To each their own. Just DD Speed Shoppin, you know. Cheers!! 😎
Dan I know you want keep the 3speed column shifter keep it original but a floor shifter will definitely be less problematic. You have a gl model then(good luck). Dan do what you want we will watch, even pull the motor again to put a new motor or transmission. Have a good day Dan
PUT A DAMN HOOD BAR ON IT!
Have you ever heard the saying ' IF it ain't broke DON'T FIX IT ! But it's your dog and I'll just keep watching !
Dan I'm telling you.... its time you invent "Velcro Engine Mounts"
~ Engine in engine out ~
~ whats all the fuss about ~
You would be your own best customer ✌️😉
Love the channel and all 3 of you now that Mur is on board 🙂👍👍👍
.....or steal a line from you....
Velvro Engine Mounts....
"It's so much little more work"
Now that says it all !
Use hose clamps like top fuel dragsters
Yes that's the power pack marking should be a 194-150 valve
The dual point heads were 327 Power Pack heads w 194 intake/160 exhaust valves
8:28. “Power Robbers, the Mortske special.” Classic. 👍🏼
Chrome reverse steelies with no caps would look sooooo good.
I love your content and both you and Danny are amazing people.
Yes it should have a high rise intake, cause that’s what we did back in the day, also Cragers, just cause!
If the block / heads are 60s do a 4 bolt main 400 sbc
I’d find and have an 1958 corvette small block (period correct)
Aluminum painted oil pan pro oil pump
Dan this is a good idea. This car is definitely nice enough to give it some love under the hood. Making it little shinny under the hood is always a plus. I know you talked about putting a automatic transmission in at one time, would this be a good time? Just a thought. Keep up the good work. 👍😎✌️
Turned into one of my favorite video creaator
Great video. Put rally wheels with Malibu police car center caps.
Thanks for sharing this video with us
Shorty headers are cheap and not loud. Great way to begin a modern exhaust. An RV cam for a bit more torque. Engine orange, polish valve covers 👍
If you run a tunnel ram run headers so she can breathe and a five speed future dan will love it
You’re doing the right thing.
Great video thanks for your time
Yes dan those are power pack heads
Great video, I hope you change oil pan gasket. Other than that, it's good to go
RMS also
Hey Dan how about you getting some ram horn exhaust manifolds they dump in the center of the engine and they actually make more horsepower than the ones that you have on there but they are stock look at manifolds they work very well have a good day keep up the good work car Looks good
327 is a nice strong motor great curser
Mite as well put a 1 piece oil pan gasket and freeze plugs while you have it out . Just saying that's me . Not my car
Back when I had a 70 Buick Stage 1 with 455 and Muncie 220 low, whenever the clutch would chatter I would get the car going around 50mph, put the tranny in 1st gear and start letting the clutch engage, basically letting the car drive the engine, and after several near dumps of the clutch, the chattering would be gone for quite a while.
Absolutely love this nomad!
Should go block hugger headers, give you some performance a plenty of room, I would swap the three speed overdrive for a 700 R4 since it is a cruiser.
No single tunnel ram Dan. Use a crossram with 2 450cfm Holleys or Sniper tri power.
The Transmission , can be mounted on the top side .
The bracket , can come from the Side , press against It , and bolt on top .
❤❤ I love your videos, awesome content
Hi Danny Dan's little helper and love ❤️ of his life 😊
Have you considered the Sanderson exhaust header manifolds for 55 Chevy?
Rattle can rebuild time 😊
A tunnel ram intake port size will be way bigger than head port size but it won’t really bother you 😂😂👍never mind
Danielle please let Dan know when he's flashing a full moon LOL at 22:46
the 327 actually did come blue in the late 1970's
that kind of makes sense if the car was redone in the early 80's the motor was probably swapped in then
if you put 265 and 283 and 327 parts together the right way. it can change the stroke and make them breath better in and out. most used the ram horns if they could afford them. a lot of 63 can=mper specials came with 327s. and they got put in cars like yours fast. low gear rear end 3 speed. over drive was fast. and the shift rods got bent.. and it would oval the bushing.and ware out the shift rod tips. from jamming them. and do what it did to you.
If you're going to run manifolds see if you can find a set of "factory headers" off a Chevy van like early '70' s up to like mid '90' s they're not all exactly the but are similar, they work well for dual exhaust
I agree with the others, go with rams horns. 327 truck engines were blue.
If you can afford to, put a TKX transmission in 😊 I would have one if I could afford one here in the UK.
GOOD JOB U2!
I was going to say tunnel ram !! But also headers dual exhaust with chrome side pipes!!! Love that nomad !!
DON’T TOUCH THOSE HUBCAPS! lol. Car looks perfect as-is. Including the aged enamel paint.
