CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Algren's (Tom Cruise) determination and strong will against Ujio (Hiroyuki Sanada) impress the watching villagers.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Edward Zwick returned to the director's chair for the first time since 1998's The Siege with this sweeping period drama set in 19th-century Japan. After centuries of relying on hired samurai for national defense, the Japanese monarchy has decided to do away with the warriors in favor of a more contemporary military. Tom Cruise stars as Nathan Algren, a veteran of the U.S. Civil War who is hired by the Emperor Meiji to train an army capable of wiping out the samurai. But when Algren is captured by the samurai and taught about their history and way of life, he finds himself conflicted over who he should be fighting alongside. Billy Connelly, Tony Goldwyn, and Ken Watanabe co-star.

The reason this is my favorite Tom Cruise movie is because most of the acting is felt instead of spoken. Not many movies seem to focus on this anymore.
Watch Silent
@senior jack not a Tarantino fan are ya? Lol
Mad max fury road
That's most anime for you
Because they've been dumbed down and feel the need to spell out and spoon feed EVERYTHING for the audience.
The woman who was watching, had her husband killed by Algren, however when she saw how resilient and honourable he was, she at least knew her husband died at the hands of a great warrior. Keeping their family honour intact.
Very well interpreted
deep
Thats almost better than still having a husband
Nice... i didn't catch this. A touch of that sympathy didn't hurt too
Such a great warrior that he lays around on her floor yelling for booze for the first month he's there. I'm sure she's very impressed...
Christ the music in this movie is a work of art
Azamat E It’s one of Hans Zimmer’s top five best scores
Hans Zimmer. One of the big 4 (with James Horner, Howard Shore and John Williams) but in my opinion, Zimmer is the number 1.
It truly is, every time i hear this music i cry, its that dramatic... 😿😿😿😿😿
Indeed. Best I have ever heard and I am 60.
@@TheDissmaster10 what about Morricone ???
I love Tom Cruise's character in this movie. He is so damaged and broken. Everything he has seen has turned him into a dead, hopeless, and hollow human. But he still fights, he stands back up, even when he has no motivation. He knows he'll get knocked back down.
I believe he kept standing up because he was looking for death. because he has motivation
Because he is hoping to die, he doesn't have any hope in life, and living seems very meaningless to him. Thats why he always drinks alcohol and fighting without any fear. He is a very sad, deep, melancholic character.
we must not lose hope.
Paul Beltran Hope is what's keeping us Alive! we as a humans are just programmed like that, by the way LS was and is one of my favorites of all time!
I believe we call that American stubbornness
Its good and bad.
I love how this scene shows the difference between the two cultures. The Samurai devote their lives to the perfection of whatever they pursue, and they move with grace and power. However, they accept when they have been bested humbly and with respect. Algren sees defeat as an invitation to try again, coming back harder and faster than before. He blunders and fails constantly, but he doesn’t care about winning. He shows his strength in his willingness to come back for more. It’s a concept unfamiliar and even offensive to his opponent, who lashes out at him in anger.
Algren later on encourages Katsumoto to adopt the same mentality when fighting the Japanese army after having lost so much. Katsumoto in turn teaches Algren throughout the film how to find peace in life and regain his lost honor. The film does a brilliant job of showing both culture learning from each other and eventually working towards a common goal. (Or, Nathan could be running headlong into danger because he’s borderline suicidal at this point. Either works).
"Perfect"
Well said
You love that do you.
Thing is Algren would have known how to use a sword. They where standard issue for officers at the time.
@@monotech20.14 He knows the western way of using a cavalry sword on horseback which is much more different than the Samurai's way of the katana. That's not saying Algren doesn't know how to fight with a sword but his way is much more based on his experience in war, not an art like it was with the Samurai.
I remember when my grandpa jokingly told me when I was younger that he was the last Samurai and that Tom Cruise’s character was based on him in real life...good times.
LMAOOOO
Haha that sounds believable for a kid 🤣
Tom's character isn't the last samurai though
My gpa told me something similar
OneSteak Snake my grandpa told me that Obi wan Kenobi was pronounced only one can know me😂
In my opinion - best of Tom Cruise's role.
If this movie didn't go up against Return of the King, it would have won best picture. This movie is a masterpiece
Have to agree. Don't really care for the man but he did well in this movie.
@Aldo Steel mine too with top gun
July 4th
What about Magnolia? Or Born in 4th June?
I suffered a near fatal heart attack in April 2018 in freezing rain and as I lay on the cold ground with nobody to help me, I had to dig deeper into my body, mind and soul to stand up so as to walk to get help. This scene reminds me of that most difficult day of my life.
Stand up and fight for whatever you love, want and need.
Fourteen years ago, lying on a cot in front of a tiny stove in winter, burning pallet wood, wife left and took kids, my business almost bankrupt, I have said myself almost the same words: " I have to dig deeper into my body, mind and soul to stand up".
We DID IT.
NOTHING will beat the man that will not be beaten.
yeah that never happened. you literally made up that scenario.
❤ be grateful for god and thank him
I am happy that you made it!! i hope and wish you the best of luck and health in your future
Although he got his arse kicked, in this moment he earned their respect. A person who does not give up despite facing a superior opponent is a person to be reckoned with. Despite the huge chasm in cultures, they could see he has indomitable spirit and heart. A beautifully moving scene.
indomitable means "cannot be tamed/wild" this is contrary to the character's experience? .. or is this where the maagic begins? this is when he begins to "want to fight"... I will leave this comment here, someone may learn something from it, thank you for your comment
@@MarcDufresneosorusrex of course he's wild ...he's a tiger...like that flag he was waving
DrCarp Yes. Totally.
He did? That's certainly one way of interpreting this scene, albeit the incorrect one.
I kind of dislike the way they portrayed western sabre fighting technique as inferior to japanese. It wasn't. Still a great film, though.
What alot of people forget is this isnt the first time this man tested Tom Cruises character. Earlier he almost decapitated him and Tom Cruise didnt even flinch. He tried to break him many times but Tom cruises character is every bit a warrior as him.
Stan,
Tom Cruise WANTED to be killed many times in that film. Watch it again, and pay attention to the "Life in every breath" temple scene.
@@Stuff7164 Yes but he wasnt afraid to. Thats the difference. He never shied away, never gave up, never bent.

He's just Tom Cruise in Japanese clothes and that's it

He was looking for death. Over and over again. Awesome movie...
Murat Khostov but found life...
Agree, probably one the best movies ever made. The Japanese culture is inspiring.
@@williamzhao2521 That's not how you do things there's always a chance at redemption
Algren may have been a depressed alcoholic with little to no prospects in the USA, but he still had a glimmer of hope in him. That's what Katsumoto saw when he looked on Algren for the first time, he saw Algren as a wounded tiger. This scene represents Algren's fighting spirit, or "Toshi", restarting his soul in new surroundings.
@Murat Khost
... while looking for death he found a Japanese wife and a couple of sons and good old Bob. Not too shabby.
Hiroyuki Sanada at his best, in my opinion. He might've said 20 words the entire movie, yet he was still arguably my favorite character. The evolution from disdain to respect that he shows for Capt. Algren, throughout the film, I thought, was the most valuable piece of character development. I look forward to giving his filmography a deep dive when I get the opportunity.
Make a video out of it, id be happy to see it
Including his final laugh when told of the fate of the Spartans.
Love me some Ujio! A consummate badass and Lord Katsumoto’s right hand man
Hiroyuki Sanada is an amazing and extremely talented man! His presence in EVERYTHING he does is felt. It does not matter if he is in only 5 episodes of a series, in a movie for 85% of the film or only 30 minutes of it! He truly is an outstanding actor! And frankly….. he is absolutely, positively… DELICIOUS!! 😍😘
One of my dreams is to meet Hiroyuki Sanada in person and take a selfie with him. He is an amazing, good-looking actor with a sizable screen presence in everything he appears in.
This movie is literally beautiful.... One of my favorite of all time. Cruise's best role IMO. The depth, the intimacy the spirituality, and Hans Zimmer outdid himself. The hell with historical accuracy, this movie is perfect.
💯
The ending kind of sucked because I wanted the samurai to win badly.
@@billwilson3665 They didn't win in real life, that's why.
thank god it's not figuratively beautiful or metaphorically beautiful, and god forbid *actually* beautiful.
nope, it's just "literally" beautiful
p.s. illiterate cucks
Completely unnecessary and mean-spirited. The sarcasm wasn’t enough for your twisted heart, you needed to degenerate to condescending name calling? How crude.
Hiroyuki Sanada is such a badass in this movie, especially in the scene where he took a shot and just walked it off
I guess that’s why he got the role of Scorpion for Mortal Kombat
@@hassanmasood186 More like because he wanted more western exposure, that movie sucked more than the original.
I like the moment when the samurai tries to pull the sword out of Tom´s hand and Tom still have enough strenght to hold it.
That's how bad he wanted to die.
Does hanz zimmer even have a chill mode. The guy is a musical god when it comes to film
I agree.
imagine what he'd listen to when he IS chill
When you have a great movie, with great actors, a great story, great dialogues and a great location, then you still need the perfect music, but you have Hans Zimmer number on your cell phone. And it all fits.
perfect
Or Alan Silvestri!

Funny!!!!
💯 💯💯💯
0:56 that part of the soundtrack is such a masterpiece. The symbology of it.. Valor, Bravery, conviction and to never give up no matter what. Its not a chosen mentality, but a created one.
Bravo! This scene reflects very well a Japanese proverb about resilience that says 七転び八起き“Nana korobi ya oki” which means “Fall down seven times, get up eight”.
God damn Uijo is a beast. I know this scene is meant to paint him as a villain for a time, but it kind of makes me love him. This actor does an incredible job of conveying Uijo's incredible pride yes, but in this moment also his fear. Algren at this point in the movie represents the encroachment of the world into Uijo's village. Every time he gets back up after Uijo beats him down, it seems to scare him more than just annoy him. It's a complex scene with not much said. It really holds up to this day and I just love it.
to me, this scene was always about East meeting West, "you must accept your defeat and submit" vs "try, try again". and the pity for him getting hurt changes into respect as they begin to understand it.
Well said sir, well said.
@Crescent City Kid 2 fights yet the fights are so visceral and real.
I don’t think he was really a Villain. He just saw him as an outsider at the time and grew to respect him.
Uijo represents the true spirit of Bushido, he made this film great.
Katsumuto already saw Algren’s spirit resembling that of the Tiger in their flag whos very resillient and never gives up regardless of his adversaries... thus Katsumoto respected Algren first more than anyone else in that Samurai clan... Ujio on the other hand had accepted Algren after this altercation... thus Algren earned his respect
I don't think he fully accepted him, until the training, where Cruise fought him to a draw in the final attempt.
The white tiger is also the symbol of the west in Japanese mythology.
@@nunya3163 And you would be correct.
The score in this film was unbelievable. This scene didn't need words with music that good, it was beautiful, emotional and evoking.
I love how they used the poetry of weather like in many Japanese stories and films. The heavy rain in the back drop relentlessly pouring down, and Hans Zimmer's music is simply beautiful. You cannot kill what is dead as this samurai starts to realize.Tom cruise in his best roll.
The character arc in this movie is incredible. He went from a prisoner in his daily life to a free man in captivity.
he doesn't let go because he wants to die, he wants the nightmares to stop and he wants to finally be at peace with his demons
This comment hit me hard
Brave facing the Shogun himself
That's the warriors attitude never giving up, even in defeat
Best film ever made & Toms best role. Simply put a masterpiece!!!
Tom Cruise: "Hey Ujio......I didn't hear no bell"
"you're the best around
Nothing's gonna ever keep you down"
Proceeds to get his bell rung 🥴
Warriors never lose, they never die. They fight even beyond their life.
Katsumoto: "Uijo is teaching you the way of the Japanese sword."
Algren: -_- ... yes
The Boulder that is a good quote
@Tyler Durden WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!
What do you want for yourself?

They are all perfect.
He was training for his SCORPION role lol...he is such a badass.

He’s actually been doing that awhile. Sanada-San was born to be Grandmaster Hasashi.
@@SHADOWACTUAL He just looks like he could ruin your day in so many ways. Perfect for these kind of roles

Hiroyuki Sanada is so damn gorgeous as this character ❤ I must say this is one of my fav scenes. Doesn't need any dialogue. It stands strong and deep as it is
Real talk. Who came back to this because of Shogun?
Hell yeah 🤣👏
Loved the movie, but yeah, Shogun had something to do with it.
I love how in this scene Ujio starts off calm and more so tries to disarm Nathan (stirkes him in the chest with the kashira/pommel of the sword, waits, and then strikes Nathans sword in reaction to his attack rather than striking his wrist or body straight away), he knocks his sword away and walks away. Nathan gets up again and yet Ujio keeps relatively calm and collected, again he knocks Nathan down and knocks away the sword and walks away. Nathan wont give up which angers Ujio and makes him lose his composure, instead of giving up willingly Nathan keeps fighting until he physically cant anymore, and although this frustrates Ujio, i think this ultimately earns his respect and admiration. Despite this film being romanticized and not super historically accurate i think the choreography, the soundtrack, the story and line delivery was all amazing and told a compelling story. Nathan a broken man who is not afraid of death but even wishes for it, yet fights tooth and nail till the end for what he cares for. The film has contrasting ideas as a huge theme, life and death, differing views on the meaning of honour, the new vs the old, tradition vs modernisation. Nathan is the bridge between the rift, "the warrior in whom the old ways have joined the new" and i think the film demonstrated this amazingly. i hope we get a 4k uhd blu-ray of this film in the near future since a lot of movies are being remastered recently.
While I like this movie for its plot and soundtrack, The Last Samurai romanticizes the Satsuna Rebellion the same way Gods and Generals romanticizes the Confederacy. The samurai benefited from the caste system of Japan’s feudal age, and the Modernization was tearing down that caste system. So they were fighting for their prestige as well as their traditions
He should have won an Oscar for this film
I love this movie. Especially the battle sequence at the end when "Bob" finally speaks and sacrifices himself for Capt. Algren.
The Best Tom Cruise movie ever. My favorite. A journey, like Dances with Wolves. There's songs and there's anthems. This is a movie anthem...amazing
Cant describe how this movie (and scene) makes me feel. Amazing, beyond words
This is my favorite scene in the movie. It shows that while the samurai see defeat as being shameful, Capt Algren refuses to accept defeat despite how the odds might be stacked against him.
I love how Ujio just walks away at the end like, “F this” 😂
😂
I cried out from my heart, over parts of this movie. It's an immensely incredible movie! The soundtrack is so good! YTB!! :)
Hans Zimmer is such a great composer, one of the best of the modern era!
The soundtrack makes the movie and is probably one of the reasons I continue to watch this film again and again.
I love this movie so much. I'm moved almost to tears just watching clips of it. Every time this movie is broadcast I watch it no matter how many times I have seen it. I dare say it is the greatest movie I have ever seen.
The spirit of the warrior will never be broken…🙏🏻
You can’t defeat someone who doesn’t give up.
All people fall at one point in their life, only few get back up and keep fighting.
That’s what separates good from the best.
"You can’t defeat someone who doesn’t give up."
The USA learned that the hard way in the middle east, and Russia will also learn it trying to conquer Ukraine.
Hiroyuki Sanada, Ken Watanabe and Tom Cruise, they became my best friends since the first time l watched the Last Samurai
The music is really what gets you…powerful, heavy and deep and the rain 🌧️ makes this scene too perfect, not to mention the Japanese Samurai Lady… that just tops it🙏
Tom Cruise has never been afraid of sharing the screen with other charismatic actors. Exhibit A: Hiroyuki Sanada.
He fought a master samurai with one hand on the blade and he kept getting back! Life goals
The way they did this movie was amazing with the music an all such a masterpiece to watch.
Hiroyuki Sanada has been always my favorite martial arts, looking forward to see what’s more coming out off this guy great actor great warrior 1:53
This is one of Cruise's best and one of my favorites! How he didn't get a Academy Award is a joke?
I love this movie so much. All these years my family and friends always poked fun at me for liking it. But seriously, its a damn good movie.
This scene moved me truley on so many levels had to shed a tear......Never give up ever in this life or the next!
J'abandonnerai jamais dans cette vie pour ne pas avoir à le faire dans l'autre ! Vous avez raison , ne jamais abandonné !
Best movie of all time. Tom should have won an oscar for his role.
This is toms best movie. I never get bored of it
Easily my fave Tom Cruise movie! Brilliantly acted and a fantastic tear in the eye ending. A great piece of acting from Ken Watanabe also!
Everytime i see this it gives me strength to fight back in life and do not give up that's the way of life.... Love from India ❤️🙏🕉️
the music, the actors' demeanors, their faces....it's like the dialogue of a best seller being read to us without a single word being uttered....you feel the honor, the duty, the battle...this is true story telling...what a remarkable movie
it is more like living the way of Samurai than acting it: I keep watching it over and over since its first release. Two thumbs up!
Probably wiser to stay down, but at least he showed he wouldn't give up, which might have impressed his captors.
halleck3 We kept standing up because he wanted Ujio to kill him. He was suicidal.

He definitely showed samurai spirit.
@@Shaison_ A Samurai would have shown grace and accepted defeat, and possibly commited Seppuku, aka intestine tango.

@@andreasballe7470 the only point in which a Samurai would commit seppuku would be when he's still alive and has no other options. In all reality it would be more honorable to die in Battle than commit seppuku
full of historical inaccuracies and yet one movie that i never get tired to watch.
Most often, movies are full of inaccuracies because Hollywood Does Not Care. But this movie, I truly believe, is a deeper story than mere history. It is about personal integrity and honor, and about the passing of ages. The particular historical events are merely backdrop, setting.
The last samurai was Jubei Kamato in the movie Unforgiven, not this Hollywood guy
Katsumoto yes, it was never meant to be algren, common misconception
This film aged like a fine wine.
I absolutely love this movie.
Scorpion is the last person to mess with as a drunk.
This duel is more of a cultural one. For one, never giving up is important, for other it's difficult to understand why the loser does not accept defeat in a dignified manner. Such a brilliant picturisation.
One of my all time favorite films! 💯

lmao 😂😂😂 relatable
Hah
Possibly one of his few roles I genuinely enjoy
Lesson: indomitable will to prevail no matter what cards your dealt. It is not over until it is over.
One of the best scenes of the movie packed with subliminal meanings. So much going on here.
I love this because he is basically daring one of the samurai leadership to kill him. Like saying, “At the end of the day, i still own your actions. You have a lot to answer for if you kill me, and i don’t care if you do.”
Very emotional, how Scorpion is beating the crap out of Tom Cruise. 🥺
It is more important to never give up than it is to win or lose. We may encounter difficulties and setbacks in life, but if we have the right attitude and are determined to keep going forward, we will be unstoppable. Never Give Up Without A Fight.
*0:35** ... that little eye blink to focus and target the hit .... the name, Hiroyuki Sanada, is enough for any movie and any serial to become an instant super hit.*
Fall down 7 times, get up 8.
The reason this is a particularly powerful scene is because of the Japanese ideal behind getting back up after being struck down. It was a trait that was taught to children, and was thought to only be present in their culture, seeing other, foreign people outside Japanese influence who often stayed down after being struck. The Japanese proverb behind the teaching goes, "nana korobi ya oki", which roughly means "seven times down, eight times up".
Nathan's character does this, which is why everyone around him is mildly shocked to see a foreigner displaying as much resilience. The scene, I imagine, is specifically aimed at the Japanese audiences watching this movie, who know just how important this is to indicate how Nathan is a different kind of man: a man like them.
The MOST UNDERRATED FILM AND PERFORMANCE of Tom Cruise’s career in my opinion!! Flawless!! ❤️🌹
I have to admit. One of Tom's best movies. Also he took a beating making it too.
This one of my faviroute clips from the movie The Last Samurai
One of my favourite movie scenes, a bit corny but damn inspiring. They all treated him like a cowardly dog for not killing himself to save his honor, but the subtle realisations conveyed by Sanada and Koyuki (actors who portrayed Ujio and Taka) that he was showing them a different kind of honor and that if anything, they misjudged him and he earned their respect.
You think?
Me and my brother Yasir a good friend went and watched this movie twice in theatres together and since then these are the many memories I have of him among others.....he is always loved and so is this movie!
It's good to see a realistic scene like this. Not only is he not trained with the sword, so is out classed easily, but also after a few strikes he is down. In real life, good hard strikes will knock the wind out of you, and you won't recover, not for that fight anyway.
Of all the people he could have picked a fight with.
He had to pick a fight with the best fighter in town who also has a grudge against him.
Thanks for reminding me that Hans Zimmer is a freaking MASTER.
This is probably my favorite scene in this movie. The new and old ways of hand to hand combat contest each other. Combat/martial arts has its own language in which words dont need to be spoken but you can understand your opponent.
Tom Cruise's best theatrical performance...prove me wrong.
Nope. It’s his best film, that’s not the same thing.
His best acting is ‘Vanilla Sky’ (2001) but the film was so weird that nobody noticed.
I feel this Japanese spirit in my Datsun 1600
Ujio is my favourite character in the movie.
Tom has always been able to act and do so extremely well. This movie, though, he was exceptional. The movie was also an amazing film to watch, and experience!
Watching the emotions in her eyes really makes this scene great. I see it contempt (for her husband's murder) morph into a flabbergasted empathy. Also so many looks of "dude you should just stay down already."
Hiroyuki Sanada as Ujio is very nice but i think i cannot underestimate Tom Cruise as Algren Nathan because he is not giving up, man is just have to respect him, true survivor.
Mr Cruz on his greatest best ever movie yu keep watching many time
Great movie!!! Cruise’s best performance yet!
