The real scary part is how David can get between floors so quickly. It’s probably the same way he got in the elevator. I’m thinking either he can teleport, or he and the skeletons stow away on the outside of the elevator car and then assume their positions before the doors open. Not as good as Chappelle, but he is the best of all-time for a reason.
One of the things that makes it so brilliant is how "seriously" Hanks commits, as he always does. The sketch fails miserably if he doesn't commit entirely to the aburdity of it all. Kenan plays the cheesy employee perfectly, Kate and Beck are both nonplussed and confused, our beat boys never break character and get increasingly weird, then an actual, genuine (albeit comic and light) jump scare to finish it. Great build-up, amazingly written, skillfully acted, masterfully executed. Really, just a perfect sketch.

The skit takes several ridiculous aspects of theme parks -- low rent characters, low rent music, low rent production value -- and cranks up the absurdity to 1000. Absurdity in the hands of the right people is hilarious. Tom Hanks makes this skit work. All the players help the thing along, but he makes it work. The pacing of the skit is perfect.
I love every one of Kenan Thompson's lines in the skit. His character is trying so hard to stay in character and maintain the mystique of the haunted elevator ride. Like when they ask if they're supposed to know David Pumpkins from something: "Well... the scariest thing to the mind... is the unknown!" Until he finally snaps at the end.
The pitch: "Ok, so it is one of those 100 floors of scares haunted houses. But the joke is that 80 of them are dedicated to David Pumpkins. Any questions?"
I'd say 13% of SNL skits are funny now that they have gone all-in on bashing Trump and becoming extreme progressive candy asses. And the tiny 13% of SNL skits that ARE funny are those prior to the election of 2016, and when they show very old SNL skits. Kinda like how Bill Maher used to have interesting shows with some interesting topics----but became a progressive and unfunny shill for the far left with every minute of every show bashing President Trump. Boring. I wish Christopher Hitchens were still around to give the mindless political hack audiences of both shows the finger.
Everybody in this sketch was perfect and made the sketch perfect but the demented look Tom Hanks kept on his face was just too perfect. Sketches like this is why I still watch Saturday Night Live since the beginning
Everyone is great in this sketch, but can we please give credit to Beck Bennett? His straight foil reactions to all this insanity is perfect. The way he answers to "Any Questions?" with "YES! SEVERAL!" always cracks me up!
I cling to David as our last moment of collective sanity. I repost him every year in hopes his insane queer energy will reach through the cosmos and wake us up from this nightmare.
Because this is well written comedy, the absurd. On first glance its stupid, then you think of stupid spook houses we go to this time of year and how silly the scares are, and then you realize as silly as the build up to those are this is actually more satisfying. Not a fan of SNL over recent years but this is magic.
I know I watched the animated special last night it was ridiculous I though then I got hook. It's catchy and you just want to join in a dance which I do.
This is actually a brilliant design for a haunted attraction. Start by giving them what they expect in order to lower their suspicions, hit them with the distraction that lowers their guard, overdo it on purpose to ensure the punchline is well set up, then hit them with the greatest jump scare of their lives... I'd totally pay $10 for that experience.
Not to mention the fact that they sculpt your face from a photo to use, "David Pumpkins" was improvising and maybe controlling the elevator, and he somehow got behind the couple without them noticing. The other guy was improvising too. And they both improvised well.
Lol! There was and it was on clearance. I picked one up and then a few days later this skit came out! I had no idea why everybody kept shouting "It's David S. Pumpkins!" everywhere I went.
The genius of this sketch is there are several plot lines that go nowhere, misdirecting the viewer and making the final payoff at the end so much funnier.
Honestly, the best thing about this sketch is how it perfectly describes the memetic effect. At the beginning, they didn't even know David Pumpkins existed. Then, they were made aware of his existence, but still didn't understand the reasoning behind him, or what makes him important. By the end, they finally realize that the purpose of his existence is to baffle and (eventually) scare people by taking advantage of their confusion, but they would never have understood the point of David if they hadn't finished the bit. Afterwards, the significance of David Pumpkins will be forever burned in their brains, and they can always relate with each other via this shared understanding, but they can't explain or share this significance with others who don't understand, until the others go through the same memetic process.
Yeah lmao but that doesnt explain why specific memes turn into this like who chooses memes and I know the answer is all of us but it would be kinda interesting to have someone really dissect why very specificly memes go viral.
@@monhi64 I think a good portion of the reason behind viral memes is "right place, right time". It may seem like certain viral creators managed to decipher the perfect way to abuse the algorithm, or predict people's habits, but the reality is that there are a millions of equally viral-potentials, and the vast majority of ones that get picked up are the result of a cosmic dice roll.
@@DJB3lfry yeah basically that's what I was thinking its basically random and no one could predict it with decent accuracy. But like figuring out exactly how that worked if even possible would be interesting. I just think itd be too much guesswork to be done with accuracy

I'd say 13% of SNL skits are funny now that they have gone all-in on bashing Trump and becoming extreme progressive candy asses.
And the tiny 13% of SNL skits that ARE funny are those prior to the election of 2016, and when they show very old SNL skits.

Because this is well written comedy, the absurd.
L.D. Johnson don’t they have something like this that similar at Disney World? Called the Tower of Terror?
Frankly, the punch line is the only thing that made the sketch worthwhile for me.
I know this would be so funny it'll work and I would pay for it.
Very funny
Not to mention the fact that they sculpt your face from a photo to use, "David Pumpkins" was improvising and maybe controlling the elevator, and he somehow got behind the couple without them noticing. The other guy was improvising too. And they both improvised well.

@@monhi64 memes are inside jokes in info-graphic form. memes also can go meta which is like being in the third layer of an inception dream. an inside joke that has gone so far inside that explanation is needed. at the end of the day memes are popular for the same reason skating rings and owning your own skates were popular. you want ot know what it is, why people care, you try it, and now you are inside on the joke. it is only a matter of time before you yourself start making memes. it is social connection without purpose other than to entertain and be apart. memes can heal the world.
