A couple things I believe are also worth mentioning. "Dream Sweet in Sea Major" is precisely 7 minutes long. This is supposedly the time it takes for you to completely cease function after being officially "dead." Additionally, the date which this was released on was 12/12/12, which in addition to being a very unique date, was supposedly the end of world, as that's when the Mayan calendar ended.
I thought that, there was a massive conspiracy hysteria that the world was ending in 2012..

It also helps to remember that these 7 minutes are supposedly flashbacks of your life, and it referencing verses from past songs means that we are in this dream-ish state right before death death. It also being slightly altered will show how we remember events differently.

Not enough people talk about just how great the actual musicality of this album is. Influences from orchestral pieces from 1700s and the experimental psychedelic music from the 1960s and hip hop in the present make this one of the most unique albums. The harmonies are as genius as the Beach Boys, the melodies as catchy and innovative as the Beatles, and strings as moving as Mozart.
Yes I've found this album only a few weeks past, presently...
it's a bit cheesy like most tally hall projects, but it's catchy and it works with some suspense of disbelief

My interpretation of the album (really simplified):
The dude is a sailor, he travels to Hawaii, where he meets his love. They fall in love and go on a date to the forest. They get lost, the girl gets murdered and it is believed our dude is responsible. Knowing he cant defend himself he pleads for insanity to get a lighter sentence but is instead sent to electroshock therapy which makes him actually insane. Hearing the voice of his lover he escapes, and finally when sailing he mistakes the siren and a lighthouse for his love and crashes, thus dying by drowning.
Yeah I believe this theory the most but you are forgetting variations on a cloud and that the album is about 9/11 (this was confirmed by the author btw)

@l333cc5 variations on a cloud is meant to be in this album and IS connected but is yet for some reason it isn't in the album in Spotify and such and the 9/11 part is only because miracle musical had confirmed it not to ignore the fact that the original official music had 9/11 clips which had caused for it to be removed from youtube in 2022

One issue with this theory I have: Resident MINOR is how he is referred to in Electric Mind, as well as a "so help me son" as if they were a child being told you NEED to do this. He is both a child and someone native to where this incident took place so it confuses me with everything even more .-.
I always thought the listener was a character themselves, with the line "why did we deserve to be revived?" implying that each listen is us restarting a time loop, and the album has an undercurrent of the characters accepting the beauty of their own musical.

7:20 Little known fact that Tally Hall actually had a 5th member who wore a green tie and played keys. His name was Andrew Horowitz. He was not, however, involved on the Miracle Musical project, which is probably why he wasn't mentioned here. Side note I would also consider Bora Karaca (orange tie) to be the hidden 6th member of Tally Hall, like how George Martin was considered 'the 5th Beatle'.

Absolutely not. At least not an official one. I think this interpretation is shallow and uninteresting. It robs it of much of it's magic for me.

I actually never considered the boy being the murderer in murders, I always interpreted it as the “erl king” being the murderer with the boy finding the body and him singing the “all for nothing at all”. I really love how many interpretations can be pulled from this album with all making sense! Great video, honestly.

ive heard a ton of theories everywhere saying that the boy was framed for the murder later in the mind electric. and so i took the “my brain has gained it’s glory over me” as him pretending to be insane because all the evidence pointed against him. this album really is just how you interpret it huh
I always thought this too, the line "why do murderous animals survive?" to me means "why did the real monster get away with it"
I always thought that it was about a sailor who was framed for murder after finding his lover dead in the woods, falsley pleading insanity as his brain is destroyed by intrusive shock therapy, he then eventually and torturously dies, meeting up with his true lover in the afterlife.

I believe this as well. But at Time Machine. He escapes from the prison he was put in. Afterwards, he finds a boat and plans to sail to Hawaii. But cause of his insanity, he proceeds to get lost and dies but ends up meeting his lover in the afterlife
@jumpwithkarl the song usually thought of how he drowns is absolutely terrifying to me because i have thalassophobia and a very good imagination so i imagined myself in his place slowly sinking with my life flashing before my eyes and trying to claw to the surface but ultimately failing and dying.
I believe that in Stranded Lullabies, he protagonist gets lost sailing following his escape in Time Machine. Once he gets lost, due to his insanity, he hallucinates a siren imitating his lost lover, referencing “A siren sounds like the goddess who promises endless apologies of paradise”.

With this protagonist being the murderer theory, in Dream Sweet in Sea Major, I’ve always interpreted the line “She knows you heard her, staging music murder” could also be heard as “She knows you HURT her”

I always interpreted this album as a man trapped a loop of reliving the events that led to his demise, unable to move and trapped in a empty, giant, ocean-like limbo, unable to move on. But there is a reason why we are focused on this loop specifically. It’s supposed to end at stranded lullaby and go back to introduction to the snow, but instead we get dream sweet in sea major. It seems normal at first, reminiscent of introduction to the snow, but then going off to do it’s own thing and eventually having the main character say his final goodbye as he finally moves on, able to leave his limbo. Weather he goes to heaven or hell, he has been finally able to say his goodbye. My mind always focused on the lyric “so things are different tonight” not only signifying a break in the loop, but also being the lyric before the song spirals on into it’s own identity, being the lyric that shows his final acceptance.
this is probably my favourite interpretation of the album!! love it, and when listening to the album again it makes so much sense. "you'll live forever tonight," HITS so much harder with this interpretation

I agree!! I’ve always thought the same of this album.
But speaking of loops, I feel like Murders is a loop in of itself. It starts with the narrator talking about a boy and lover, but then remembers everything by the end of the song and reveals that the narrator himself is the boy. Murders is the climax yet the beginning of the story of the album, the beginning ring in a long, complex spiral. (At least, that’s my interpretation.)
To add! I think Dream Sweet In Sea Major’s name can also contribute. Just my idea though.
You say he’s trapped in a “empty, giant, ocean-like limbo” And the title does contain “dream sweet in sea” which could maybe be interpreted as this Sea still being an after life of sorts, but it is no longer a limbo space. It’s over.
The song also says, right after the same opening lyric as Introduction To Snow, “for merely dreaming we were snow.” Which i think calls back to the first song. It calls back to the first song in many ways as well, with the 6 lines before the very last 4, using the piano melody the album opens with. Maybe it’s the loop trying to restart and still failing?

At 24:49 you said, that the lyrics "All for nothing at all" belong to the girl whom our protagonist had murdered earlier. And as I was thinking in this way of understanding the album, I had really strong goosebumps when at 44:29 came out the "she knows you heard her" lyrics. She knows the protagonist heard her and thus he will never get away from what he has done, because her last words will always chase him.

It definitely has changed my life for the better and it's one of if not my favorite album of all time and tally hall is one of my favorite bands of all time to! God i love it all so much I can't wait to find another peice of media with that same effect. Immediate 10/10 that fuelled my growing love for music ten fold. Never fallen in love with an album like I did with this one. Since finding it a couple years ago there have been a few that come close, but nothing that stuck with me the way this one did. Dream Sweet in Sea Major is also probably my favorite song I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. The album in general is just an incredible experience all around.
For me, my favorite song and introduction to the album is Mind Electric, which I have always assumed was about a schizophrenic person (due to the background voices) being sentenced to electroshock therapy (given the line “nuns commence incanting as the lightning strikes my temples thus”)

When I heard The Mind Electric for the first time, I was like “Why does this make my brain feel so good. Why do I want to listen to this over and over again?” And it finally clicked that this was technically a Tally Hall spin-off album, a band of whom my favorite songs were Ruler of Everything, Spring and a Storm, Hidden In The Sand, and The Bidding
Having watched this video, holy shit is this album so strange, off putting, horrifying, haunting, and beautiful all At once. The madness of one’s own mind is such a terrifying thought. Let alone what it can make you do if you descend too far down into it.
The Mind Electric reminds me of certain bits of Everywhere at the End of Time (another album that fills me with existential horror) especially because of all the distortions and random audio queues. Both convey the feeling of your mind slipping away from you in very visceral ways and it’s terrifying. Fantastic video breaking it all down!
Edit: I completed forgot to mention the bits of semi related footage that you’d insert into certain parts of the video. Like the Stephen Hawking audio clips and such. It really stayed true to the sporadicalness of the album imo!

I've always taken Hawaii Part II to be a deeply personal album for Joe. The narrative of the songs when isolated is interesting enough on its own, but Joe Hawley's personal life has a very large effect on how this should be perceived.
Schizophrenia *is* the villain of Hawaii Part II, because Joe might suffer from it himself.
Many speculate this to be why Tally Hall went on its indefinite hiatus to begin with, and if you're at all familiar with Joe's many controversies over the years, they've all been tracked back to his poor mental health. But the conceptualization of Hawaii came when he was a kid; he went with his family to Hawaii in (I think) 1997, and it inspired him to take up music to create an album about his time there. It was while living at an uncle's farm in exchange for work after end of Tally Hall that he finally had the time to put his dream album together, but so much had happened to Joe between 1997 and 2011 that the end product is Hawaii Part II: An album that has very little to do with the innocent trip to Hawaii he took.
In my mind, Hawaii Part II is specifically about Joe's breakup with his college girlfriend, something he has admitted to still be effected by as recently as 2019. The most striking piece of evidence towards this in my mind is Stranded Lullaby, which is a modified version of "Our Lullabye;" a song Joe wrote for his ex when she moved away to attend a different school.
Joe's a deeply troubled person. He never got over losing his first real love, he still misses Tally Hall, and he suffers greatly from an undiagonised mental disorder. Hawaii Part II is a cry for help.
I never knew this before i feel bad for him, it is really sad how some fan are not understanding these and yk nowadays this fandom full of kids that don’t really know a thing im also a new fan but i can feel the love of the fan for this band. I really feel bad for both of joe and this lovely fandom
@@panisarakaewdangme too, I’ve been a fan of some tally hall and miracle musical songs for a few years now without realizing who they were and I only now recently looked into it. I feel very bad for Joe since he’s not getting the help he needs and because so many of these younger fans idolize him they keep bothering him which leads to more controversy since he can’t properly communicate with them. I’m really sad I’m only now finding Tally hall even though I’ve been a fan of their works for a while, and I hope Joes mental health can recover

Here's my interpretation of the album in summary:
The story is about a man called Simon and his lover. They're perfect for each other, but the woman dies and Simon is sad about it.
Introduction to the Snow:
I'm not too sure about this one. Since the last song starts the same way as this one, Simon might already be dead and looking back at his life (which means the story would be cyclic) OR this is just an introduction to our main character and his state of mind, all alone, looking for someone to love. Since there's snow, we are not in Hawaii yet.
Isle Unto Thyself:
This is the first time we hear a female singer. Simon meets someone who enlights his world, a "shining blinding star". He passionately falls in love with her as if it was magic, and this big change makes him question all that he knew.
Black Rainbows:
Simon and the woman go to Hawaii and she loves Simon back.
White Ball:
The lovers are incredibly happy together, so much so that it feels unreal. Little do they know, their bliss will be cut short.
Murders:
The narrator says he found a boy and a girl (the lovers) in the woods and he ends up killing them because he's afraid they'll kill him ("murder of murderers"). He finds out it was all for nothing because, as he says at the end, HE was the boy, the narrator was Simon himself who belived to be someone else due to a mental disorder.
Space Station Level 7:
Simon tries to console himself thinking about Heaven, but it doesn't erase the guilt and pain.
The Mind Electric:
Simon is processed for his crime and judged insane, so the doctors use elecroshock therapy to fix his disorder. It's painful, but it ends up working.
Labyrinth:
Simon is now sane, but feels lost without his lover and the memory taunts him as an unreacheble objective.
Time Machine:
Simon finds temporary relief in reliving his old memories.
Stranded Lullaby:
Simon sails off into the ocean to find some peace, but gets lost. It's not clear how much time has passed since the last song.
Dream in Sweet Sea Major:
Simon can't go back on land and is going to die lost in the sea. In his final hours, he finally accepts everything that's happened to him. As death comes closer, the memory of the lover becomes more present and she sings again. The story ends as a wave hits Simon's ship, abruptly ending the song.
Personally, my interpretation is that the electro shock therapy didn't work, and that he starts believing his lover is actually still alive during Stranded Lullaby.
Then, in Dream Sweet in Sea Major, when the woman sings, I interpret it as being either A: an allucination, maybe acting as some kind of siren, calling him to his death, or B: the voice of his lover lulling him to his death.
I prefer the theory that Simon isn’t a murderer and is sane (at first)
Murders: Simon’s lover gets killed
SS7: His girlfriend rises to heaven
The Mind Electric: Simon is wrongly accused of murder and pleads insanity to not go to prison. Then, electroshock therapy actually makes him crazy.
Labyrinth: Simon tries to become sane again.
Time Machine: He relives his old memories while trying to get a grip on reality.
Stranded Lullaby: Simon escapes and goes to the sea, trying to escape Hawai’i, even if it means his death, since it would bring him closer to his dead girlfriend.
Dream Sweet: He is lost at sea and will die.
I love your interpretation! Maybe the Hawaii metaphor could connote an escape from the narrator’s usual life in snow (always looking the same with no excitement). When he takes a vacation to Hawaii and meets his lover and, during the songs Black Rainbows and White Ball, they’re deeply in love. But, like all vacations, it must come to an end. This is during Murders with someone killing the narrator’s lover.

@@amosbaux1143 People call the character Simon because the demos for TME call him Simon and one of the demos of TME is literally called "Inside the mind of Simon".
Technically it’s not exactly canon, but it’s a logical assumption to make that the character has the same name.

I think the idea that this album is meant to have multiple interpretations is super fascinating, because the album's bonus track, Variations On A Cloud, basically says exactly that. It opens with the lyrics "Both of us see a cloud or whatever we may believe,
Being it may be proud or whatever we want to see". I think its very likely that this open-ended nature is intentional. Amazing video, the visuals were top notch!
This album is how I discovered my music taste: songs that tell a story. Before now I couldn't really tell why I liked musical soundtracks or random songs I discover through animatics that depict their stories.
It’s one of the major reasons why I started making video essays. That obsession to discover meanings/explain is just so cool

gotta recommend lord huron for this. they're folk rock and have different characters that take turns telling their stories in their albums. I could actually never get too much into the lore as it hurt my head, but they're so good. so many songs perfect for animatics.
i *highly* recommend clipping's Splendor & Misery. if you're a fan of Hamilton, Daveed Diggs released this album shortly after winning his Tony Award. it also is very cryptic, using clues like morose code and ciphers to link to other songs throughout their discography.
I have synesthesia and basically visualize colors to songs, and Hawaii part ii gives me colors of all kinds, from an ivory white to neon pinks and oranges and teals and highlighter yellows to blue greys and blacks. It’s what I could best call a literal indescribable spiral into love and loss and hurt. Its violent and blinding and comforting and empty.

*The Mind Electric* - The protagonist has been framed for his lover's death and pleads insanity. He is then subjected to electroshock therapy whereby he actually goes insane. (sung by the protagonist during the time) [I believe that the distortion on the word "insane" is supposed to mimic "innocent".]
*Labrynth* - The protagonist tries to escape the infirmary/psych ward multiple times and is stopped. (sung by the protagonist during his attempted escapes)
*Time Machine* - The protagonist wishes he had a time machine so he could go back in time to before the murder. (sung by protagonist during his time in the infirmary)
*Stranded Lullaby* - The protagonist has escaped the infirmary via a row boat and is beginning his journey out to sea. (sung by protagonist just after his escape)
*Dream Sweet in Sea Major* - The protagonist's final hours, long after his escape as he is dying, hallucinating, reliving his experiences. He says his goodbyes to life, his song ending, and dies. (sung by protagonist at the end of his life).
So basically, man comes to Hawaii as a musician, falls in love, his lover gets murdered and he's framed for it, pleads insanity, goes insane due to electroshock therapy, attempts to escape the infirmary multiple times, finally does and dies alone on a rowboat on the ocean. I could rant on so much more about this album haha, I loved the video!
I wished you had pointed out that the moonlight on the cover art is actually the lure of a female angler fish, it fits so well into your theory of the song! This was such a lovely video. Liked and subscribed :)
I think “You’ll live forever tonight” is one of the most beautiful lines in any song i have ever heard, especially paired with the piano.

I'd love to mention some extra contextual details, for those interested:
1. songs like 'stranded lullaby', 'mind electric' and 'time machine' existed wayy before this album, as they were songs Hawley wrote during his time in Tally Hall. Not all were written for Tally Hall though.
2. mind electric existed previously as 'inside the mind of Simon' which you can find clips of it online! It was performed by another band Hawley was in called Cojum Dip.
3. stranded lullaby was initially written for Hawley's girlfriend years ago, though they're relationship fell apart, resulting in possible legal involvement, though I don't remember the details. It was since redone and renamed for this album.
4. Time Machine was worked on by tally hall but never eventuated into their albums, perhaps similarly to 'i'm gonna win' which Rob Cantor kept and put onto his album 'not a trampoline'.

I got a lot of this info from personal research, but also from a yt vid called something like 'the ultimate tally hall documentary' which is several hours long, but extremely interesting and informative!
Cohue Dip was the project of Tally Hall honorary member Bora Karaca (who appears in the tally hall internet show and acts as the bands producer) and didn’t have joe in it, but otherwise yes these are true

OK so The Mind Electric info dump because I can't shut up about it:
Apparently it was first showed in the disc Joe sent to Rob to prove he was good enough to be on the still unamed Tallyhall, alongside more questionable songs like L'Frou Jibet (the version in question is DEMO 1)
Then he rerecorded this demo with the other members, the DEMO 2
Later on, during the development of Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum they planed to include the third DEMO, Inside the Mind of Simon, but apparently the song originally had over 20 instruments, which made them cut it due to budget issues, although they still played it in shows (the only one we have any recording of is the Pingry School show back in 2006, sadly the Inside the Mind of Simon portion is mostly lost media, with the exception of the "here in my kingdom I am you lord I order you to cower and pray" verse)
There was one show we actually have a recording of this song being played but ironically not by Tallyhall but by Bora's band (and nowadays Solo project and literally the only tallyhall thing that is still alive), Cojum Dip.
The band later attempted to revive it for Good & Evil but it was, again, cut due to lack of budget.
After the hiatus of Tallyhall Joe ended up living with an uncle (i think) in a farm and had to work during with the farm stuff during the day and work with Bora at night to make Miracle Musical an actual thing.
Then he ended up coming up with the last DEMO, DEMO 4 - The Mind Electric.
It's probably one of the most iconic demos due to it also doubling as a Labyrinth demo (With the "See how I learn from you" verse)
Joe ended up spliting the song into two and readding the remaining part from Inside the Mind of Simon, one half kept the original name The Mind Electric and the other recieved one more demo, Labyrinth.
Labyrinth's only exclusive DEMO is one of the most interesting ones in the album, it's less than 25 seconds long and has only a few verses, and it all sounds kinda mumbled and people still kinda discuss what is said in it.
Then the album came out as we know it, but there's still one more version
The Bora / Cojum Dip instrumental version that was featured in Hawaii Part II part ii, it is completely different than the live version, with the vocals being substituted by an accordion and with a bigger emphasis on the guitar.

I think another important thing to note is how many references there are to the book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe" with the whale, the end/edge of the universe and the spiral down to madness from supposed normal life.
This album has always held a special place in my heart and always will. The passion and emotion put into this project always reminds me that despite the fact that all our time is limited, we still can make a difference by what we make of our time.
I think putting "Hawaii: Part II" in quotation marks in the video's title would go a long way, lol
I am not a lyric listener, but I enjoyed this entire album purely because of its musicality, so much so that I almost never considered the story the lyrics presented, just the melodies and how they connected between songs. But the idea of this story just makes the music feel so much more meaningful, almost like I get to listen to the album new all over again with this new perspective. Great video!
what's crazier is the fact that this whole album is actually about 9/11 where a lot of the same themes apply. I literally sat w my mom and discussed without knowing what it was about without looking it up and then we looked it up and it was confirmed by Hawley that it was about that event we were like "AH????" and we relistened to the whole thing and connected it to that. I like to think this whole album takes place in death or on the edge of death and is completely about the control of fear either on the individual (PTSD) or fear in the moment, even fear over the whole country, even fear from the people being controlled into being the enemy yk (listen to the mind electric thinking about that pov it is wild.)
my favorite lyric that changes between the two storylines (9/11 or just a twisted love story) is "a siren sounds like a goddess who promises endless apologies of paradise" and in the fantasy love story we think of it like a mermaid or someone's voice, but If you think of this as a victim of 9/11 it is literally like an ambulance siren who is promising to save your life instead of sending you to be in heaven (apologizing because they cannot send you there, they try everything in their power to keep you alive)

This narrative feels similar to My Chemical Romance and three cheers for sweet revenge. (9/11 also inspired MCR) odd parallel.
I’ve always had a weird relationship with this album. I first listened to this album about two weeks before a close friend of mine was murdered. Because of this I feel this profound sense of grief from both the lyrics and the music, which I think still would be true if I hadn’t experienced what I had but to me that feeling is so much more prominent. Heck, it’s hard for me not to tear up when I listen to the album (particularly Dream Sweet in Sea Major, as that was the song I particularly gravitated towards). Great break down of the album, really fits with how I view the deep sadness of it all.
Here’s a few things I noticed I think might be worth pointing out
Stairways lead straight to hell: stairways are mentioned several times , mostly in reference to Heaven . In Labyrinth , the protagonist is quite literally going mad . The stairways he once thought would take him to heaven foreshadows the final song leading him to the fiery pits
Pyramid holograms: I instantly thought of the Stella Octangula . I can’t quite put my finger on it , but this shape clearly has a deep meaning throughout this album . Maybe it shows how the protagonist thinks he knows what comes after death ? I don’t know .
ive loved this album for 5 or so years and i love how you summed up the story. i had always seen it as a man who lost his mind, this was a great video.

What if by Part II the album is trying to say "part two," as in parting two people (lovers) from each other because of whatever incidents separate them whether that be from death or murder or whatever happens in their story???!!!? Woof... I didn't expect this could make me appreciate this album in a new light, but I'd honestly never tried to string a narrative out of it before. I have a hard time interpreting poetic lyrics, so this was SO cool!
I found Hawaii Part II by happenstance at about 2am on a Saturday night not too long into the pandemic, when Dream Sweet in Sea Major suddenly came up on my youtube recommendations. It feels like that was the best way I could have possibly found it as I was swept up in the esoteric sounds and the creativity of their chosen method of storytelling, and I remain enamored with the bizarre nostalgia that Dream Sweet instills in me whenever I hear it

This video is so damn good that it fundamentally changed the way I looked at this album.
Previously, I thought that the protagonist- who for the sake of ease I’ll call Simon- was just some innocent dude who got separated from his girlfriend and found her dead, and was left with no choice but to plead insanity.
After watching this video… yeah, no. Simon’s definitely actually insane, and he definitely actually killed her.
_Which makes it infinitely more sad when so much of the album eludes to him slowly beginning to regret what happened despite losing all sense of his own identity._
One of the things I love most about this album is all of the amazing meanings it has for so many people. I love your interpretation as well (even if it was changed after the video lol). Who knows, maybe Joe Hawley wanted to make it a little more simple than what we think 👀
I find it interesting you dove into the topic of schizophrenia when analyzing ‘The Mind Electric.’
A little while ago, after Joe Hawley did some unsavory things (claims and accusations include transphobia, manipulation, dating younger women, and abuse), someone (Mathew Altruda) who was close to Tally Hall, put out a claim that entails his suspicions of Joe Hawley having undiagnosed Paranoid Schizophrenia. learning this makes listening to music written by Joe Hawley a different experience, as you are able to notice the tinges of reality and autobiography in his music.
Also, I think it is known that when Joe Hawley disappeared on that tour, it was later revealed he had a court case about a broken restraining order with a college ex of his. he mentions this ex quite often when interviewed about his music. It is also rumored that ‘Stranded Lullaby’ was written for this specific ex.
I have spent time in a psychiatric hospital, and there i managed to befriend someone who is still one of my closest friends to this day. He happens to be a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. When I showed him this album, he said that certain songs remind him of how it feels to him to just exist.
Anyway, this album definitely changed who i am as a person. It impacted me in my early teens, when i first discovered it- and with it, Tally Hall.
This video was great. The editing, the script, the analysis, everything was amazing and came to a satisfying end. Good job!

I'm so glad to see someone talk about the beautiful work of art that is this album. I stumbled upon Hawaii Part 2 on an afternoon in 2017 and have been utterly enthralled by its music and story ever since. Thank you so much for making this video and introducing a whole new audience to this masterpiece.
Hawaii part II is a very complex work, truly a work of art, because if you look at each composition separately, they also have a story their own. but also a story in each other, the secret meanings themselves and sounding is excellent, I think Joe wanted to show us Infinity itself with his album (because according to Joe himself, he was obsessed with eternity, it can even be seen in his work Tally Hall)
And you went through TME, Labyrinth and TM so quickly, lmao

I found this album during covid. I was have having a bit of a hard time coping with the loss of many things when I first heard a small sample of The Mind Electric. I remember being absolutely shook, I immediately did a deep dive into the album like you did. This album is a true untapped masterpiece. The Mind Electric will always hold a special place in my heart, but my favorite song on the album is Stranded Lullaby. It’s just beautiful. I’ve always interpreted it as, the boy and girl being lovers he finds her dead in the forest. Soon the murderer captured and sentenced to death by electric chair. Following the boy’s decent into madness over the grief and loss of his girlfriend after not being satisfied with the killers death. Only being happy again after reuniting after his own death, I’ve always thought of it as committing toaster bath. A musical tragedy

My first exposure to this album was through a Kuroshitsuji cosplay on tik tok back in 2020. They used a part of mind electric to represent ciel's judgment for all he's done and his personal demon sebastian finally getting his part of the agreement. Idk why but it stuck to me so much that I had to listen to the whole song, and then the whole album, and at the time I was so mad that people didn't speak about it! I never truly found any other music so detailed and expressive as this is... I spend a few days looking for similar artists or songs and came out empy handed, to dive into tally hall following my finding of this album, so I could at least hear something that reminded me of it. Mind you that I was 12 at the time, this shaped my music taste and marked me as a human being in the same way as those nightcore edits of edgy songs at the time. It was a huge turning point in my life, you could say it was a "canon event", I never truly recovered from it, and I don't think I can.
At the time I really thought there was a secret "part one" of the album that was missing, and I was really confused when I found out there isn't. But thinking about it now I belive there is something missing, something that my brain eager to figure out the puzzle
When I listened to dream sweet after sea major I seriously had to check if it was a tally hall song because it sounded so similar to what tally hall would play despite not being a tally hall song. The UA-cam music algorithm was just recommending similar songs for me to listen to.

I cannot seem to explain how lucky I am to have come across this video. Usually, videos with small amounts of views I skip past because they’re junk a lot of the time (low quality, some kid filming with an iPad). I’m so glad I clicked on this. Thank the lord this is so well made. Hawaii part 2 is barely looked upon, there’s the few clips of TikTok audio but that seems to be it. I thought I was the only one who found so much interest in it! The melodies and lyrics and instrumentals are GENIUS. even better that there’s a crazy deep meaning behind it! How does Hidden in the Sand relate to the album?
No problem at all! From my interpretation, the main protagonist killed the girl of his dreams due to a schizophrenic episode. From what we know about how the albums lyrics are written, we have to assume that our main character is simply bad for bads sake, stuck under the weight of a mental illness he can’t escape. It’s why he’s persecuted in Mind Electric and why he pays for his sins in the afterlife. She was in the forest looking to see the trees, but instead she found the Erlking (our protagonist portrayed as death).
However, this isn’t the only interpretation out there. In all honesty, I could be way off! I think that’s why I’m so in love with this album.
As for your second question, I chose to use Hidden in The Sand to show the similarity between the sound of that song and the sound of Introduction to Snow/Dream Sweet in Sea Major. The similarity in vocal approaches helped the community determine that it was Joe Hawley behind the lyrics and that song was the best example I could find. If you want to really be a conspiracy theorist, I noticed a shocking motif of the ocean being used throughout Tally Halls music and Hawaii: Part ii. Just some food for thought!

If you’re looking for more obscure/kind of forgotten albums to cover (because this video was awesome), I’d recommend the album The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly by Le Loup. It has a really unique apocalyptic feel to it, similar to Hawaii part II in how cryptic it is at times.

Fun fact: The song "Stranded Lullaby" was actually based off a song that Joe wrote for a previous partner he had around the Tally Hall era. In my opinion, that knowledge alone makes Stranded Lullaby just that more beautiful.
I found this album around late 2019, funnily enough the song that lead me into it was Sweet Dream in Sea Major. Once I heard it I was completely entranced in the entire album almost immediately, the vocals, the composition of each song's music, the interesting way they all blend together to tell a story that could be so straight forward or so cryptic depending on the way you look at it. Hawaii: Part ll is truly just such a beautiful piece of art, I feel it really does something that I've still to this day not seen any other albums do. My interpretation of this album has always been very similar to that discussed in the video, I don't think I can describe how nice it feels to have someone cover this work of art so beautifully, and to see that the way I think about this is something that others think as well. Such an amazing video covering such an amazing work of art!
Hawaii Part II is a timeless album. I love the fact that tracks from the album are still getting more and more popular to this day.
I absolutely love the mind electric segment of this video. It starts of with an undecipherable reversed mind electric, but then it slowly brings into question of the voices in his head and schizophrenia, but it suddenly gives a cryptic explanation of ECT. After the explanation of ECT is shown, unreversed "think of each moment holding this breath" almost jumpscares you, like an unforeseen villain finally making himself known.
I first found this album through an animatic for The Mind Electric, and I was immediately enraptured. I found it on Spotify, and for a week or so I listened to TME on repeat, before finally realizing the rest of the album could be just as incredible.
There are songs on it that don’t call to me as strongly, but I can see the appeal in all of them.
In particular for me, Stranded Lullaby causes the most intense emotions. Even from the short clips and the last few lines included in the video, I could feel myself start to tear up. Something about the song calls to my fears of my friends and loved ones leaving me behind for something else, I think.
Fantastic video, I think your interpretation of the album’s story is super interesting.
Because I never listen to the whole thing in order, I’ve never really put any thought to what the songs mean together, which I do regret.
It 's so interesting to see how different people react to the songs. It's almost the exact opposite for me. The Mind Electric is such a stand out in this album for me that i can't bear to listen to it too often. Messing with the mind (shock therapy, lobotomies etc) is horrifying to me and the song portrays it so well that i feel like I'm on the verge of a panic attack when i hear it. It's so interesting to hear you say that you listened to TME on repeat and instead latched on to Stranded Lullaby, a song that i personally haven't put much thought on. It shows how amazing and complex this album is for people to have such different experiences with it.
Stranded Lullaby makes me cry the most, so I get you there, but for me there’s this one specific part of the Mind Electric where it skips suddenly to soft piano music and a woman’s soft voice speaking and it makes me cry because it’s like Simon’s memories of his lover

I found this album a few years ago from Spotify recommendations in my playlist, and never listened to it past that. After I saw the thumbnail to this video pop up I got curious and finally took the plunge to listen. I cried, the first time I listened in the car. I don’t know why. I think it reminded me of good times long gone. Something about the lyrics, however hard to decipher, speaks to every human on a foundational level. Even if you don’t know what you’re hearing, you’ll react to it. This album is why music is so powerful.
Gosh when you started talking about "Dream sweet in sea major" I got so excited that I even sang along with the lyrics. That song is so important to me, as it's a medly of most of the previous songs in the album. It fuses musical motifs and ties the whole thing back together and just ahhhh.
Miracle musical was my top artist last year. This album left a huge impact on me. I remember falling asleep listening to this album on repeat during a hospital stay. The only thing that really comforted me at that time. I’d been listening to them for years, but somehow the album hit harder once I got sick
I found these songs online in late 2018. Never was in the mood to listen to the whole album in one go because my ears would stop doing their job and I would lose the point of listening to the whole album.
Every song to ME though is just a perspective of how life and death can go for you. Blissfully, regretfully, lovingly, excitedly, painfully, psychotically/crazily, and longingly. Every song is the same story between the anima and the animus, but with a different overbearing emotion that ruled the choices the characters make or commit to.
Paul McCartney once got high and wrote down his ‘meaning of life’ on a note which was “There Are Seven Levels”

Just wanted to clarify, try not to demonise schizophrenia and imply it turns people to murder
I have tons of friends with mental illnesses that are commonly demonised and I myself experience auditory hallucinations sometimes
We just want to live our lives and are generally more likely to be victims of crimes (even when in a manic state)
Currently at the mind electric section and I’m kinda getting that feeling

I absolutely love how you summarized this album. Miracle musical has always been so fascinating to me and I really enjoyed the amount of detail that you put into this.
The way you present this is absolutely amazing. The cuts to scenes that relate without explanation hits the vibr of the album, and then the very indepth descriptions of the important key points are very well done.
Another lyric I think points twards the scitzophrenia thing is this line in Stranded Lulaby: "I'd like to know why you, are all alone while I...". Which points twards that because oviously he's *physicaly* alone (he's in the middle of the ocean after all) which means he's not alone because of the voices in his head. But maybe thats just me.
The Mind Electric's part in this video was perfectly executed. The first impression of the reversed part, the analysis on schizophrenia, and finally the reveal of the unreversed song was honestly a little chilling.
I discovered this album about 2 years ago and I have been absolutely obsessed with it ever since. Like you said every word, every song, every note is extremely crucial. I enjoy every listen just as much as the last. Thank you so much for making this video and breaking this album down!
This album was a comfort album for me, often listening to it whenever I was having panic attacks and the beautiful vocals would calm me. It's been a while since I first watched this, and now every time it comes on through my shuffle I feel this sense of dread. I still love it, but for a much much different reason now

What a fascinating and eerie album, and a very fun video breaking it down song by song (and the editing was incredible! V spooky). I suppose maybe its format is why Miracle Musical chose their name? This album almost reminds me of an ARG in a weird way: given all the details hidden and dispersed within each song, it would only make sense that there are perhaps other hints to the story hidden within the band itself.
It's not surprising to me that Tally Hall created a secret band in Miracle Musical on the side which then became their prevailing project in the hiatus; the act of making secret side bands appears to be fairly common as a way, I believe, for musicians to express themselves outside their band's genre. Rather, what I'm more curious and interested in is to know if Miracle Musical ever created a *Hawaii: Part I*. Depending on how you interpret it, the lyrics at 14:01 in "Island Unto Thyself" could indeed hint to events prior to the events in Part II. Maybe Miracle Musical named this "Part II" with the intention of expanding on it in a later Part I? Or perhaps conversely, "Part II" is really more to signify the events described as being parts of a grander unknowable whole. Not everything with a labeled part has an accompanying other part: House of Heroes' song "Journey into Space: Part One," for instance, does not have a Part Two, which I believe was an intentional decision.
Anyway, another great video, well done. I think I would've liked to see more of a dive into the band members themselves... although I got the impression that since Hawley has been so tight-lipped about this album, so too are the other band members.
there will never be a part 1. one way to look at this album is to see it as an allegory for the 9/11 attacks. the ii is the towers. while this is not the only way to view this album, it was the way at least some of the songs (parts of mind electric, stranded lullaby, sweet dreams, and variations on a cloud) were written to be taken

The "Part II" at least to me, implies moving on, forgetting Part I, a theme in Introduction To Snow like "old lore".

another little thing - dream sweet in sea major mentioned "atoning bright above a blinding star", and liked mentioned before in the video, the only god mentioned is apollo. apollo is the god of the sun, so perhaps the moon is an allegory to heaven, and the sun to hell. it could also be a reference in the fact that the greek goddess of the moon is artemis, apollo's twin sister. a female goddess is also mentioned throughout the musical, and i'm unsure of how else this would tie in, but i think its fun!
Whilst I never quite dug into the album’s meaning, the first song, Introduction to Snow, was my theme song during the latter half of my high school years due to it’s sheer vibes alone, and even now I hold the album in very high regard as Hawaii Part II holds some of the best songs I’ve ever heard.

It is, to be honest, a great deconstruction that shed some light on the unpopular opinion of the guy in "Murders" NOT to be the murderer of the girl. And I am also really glad, that after almost 11 years of existance of the HPii it became the point of attraction because of TikTok.

I’ve been writing a story based off of Hawaii part two named after tally halls Verison of the mind electric “inside the mind of Simon” giving the protagonist a name. Weirdly enough I see everything almost the same up to Time Machine with a few variations (on a cloud (I’m sorry)) before it. I see murders to be vague because the protagonist doesn’t know if he murdered his lover after all. He was turned in but he believes he’s innocent (probably something to do with the schizophrenia) and that’s why he has to go through electric shock therapy. I think part of him believes he did it and the other part believes he’s innocent, and I believe the conflict of believing that he killed his lover as a possibility hurting him as he loved her and believes she would judge him if they met again and blame him for her death (i believe this is reflected on the 4th mind electric demo w the lyrics: See how I laugh at you

No, I'll never ever ever understand in a voice that sound like it would have been sung by the female vocalist if this variation was put into the mind electric, saying, as a figment of his mind cause this whole time his brain is spiraling, it’s all his fault) and the thought of he’s innocent and real murderer is out there (I think this is reflected in the lyrics in isle unto thyself “why do murderous animals survive?” Asking himself why is he here and not the real murderer) is torturing him. Later, I believe Time Machine even as just a reflection, is the time the main protagonist escapes the asylum, and into the ocean. How I write It is that he was being shipped onto a bigger asylum where he is leaps off the ship into a raft to drift into the ocean, but this is a stretch. This makes stranded lullaby being both metaphorical and literal, since I believe that this story is in the broken mind of a poetic man who’s viewing the world in its literal state to that of his fantasy poetic world. Dream sweet in sea major is where he is dying drowning in the ocean while reflecting on everything, as he has his final hallucination of the world around him as he dies. Anyhoo, amazing video!! It made my little brain get happy scratches !!
A lot of work went into this video, I feel like you managed to make it as eerie, beautiful and terrifying as this whole album is, as any good love letter should be. Thank you for that.

I found this album a while ago, but I hadn't ever listened to the whole album in order and I never thought that the lyrics were anything other than abstract poetry. The idea that the songs were all part of an overarching story and fit the format of a musical was a huge revelation to me, and it was such a joy to put together all of the pieces live as I watched.
I don't know if it was the way you told the story, the editing, or just luck on my part, but throughout the video I kept having massive "AHA" moments as I figured things out only minutes before you would say them.
The feeling when you suddenly cut to Erlking and I recalled learning about the piece more than a year ago, then quickly realizing the references to it in Hawaii, and then later the Steven Hawking and miscellaneous science clips' thematic relevance suddenly having a whole new meaning as I realized that the rocket you were showing footage of was the Apollo mission was incredible!
For me, this album really captures a lot of powerful existential feelings and questions that I personally struggle with. Although the album isn't particularly new, it feels like part of a larger new kind of storytelling that we've been seeing recently, exploring overwhelming and nuanced feelings.
Hawaii Part II reminds me of the nihilism and absurdism in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the strange and purposeful nostalgia of the Weirdcore aesthetic, and the melancholic horror in the album Everything at the End of Time.

Also in murders the very end says after the all for nothing at all there’s a piano solo then “I was the forest looking to see the trees but none were there” which heavily implies that the boy and the narrator are one in the same

i love Hawaii Part II so much dude, i honestly consider it one of the greatest albums of the 2010s and one of the most unique albums of the 21st century in general as it’s a concept album and is one of the few albums where the entire thing gives me “neurodivergent auditory bliss” as i call it, and probably my favorite multi-genre album other than Tally Hall’s first album and maybe a few of the early Genesis albums as progressive rock is technically multi-genre although i’m not 100% sure about it. I also learned a few things about Tally Hall/Miracle Musical/Joe Hawley from this video that i didn’t know, and i thought i knew a LOT about Joe’s work. Anyways, i absolutely love this video, you did an amazing job telling the story of this amazing album.

I recall listening to this quite a few years ago and listening to “The mind electric” a lot in particular, though it had been quite some time and I had thought it was from a different artist, so hearing those lyrics was a spine chillingly surreal moment.
I've loved this album for a while, and I love this video for taking a really deep look into it that I've never quite been able to figure out all together. I think my favorite thing about it is how wonderfully it captures different genres of music and ties them together wonderfully, from dramatic piano to chiptune-style beats to whatever the heck the mind electric is. great video, and i'm glad someone else was as moved by it as i was!
